Benjamin Fredrick set to miss AFCON due to knee injury

Super Eagles breakout defender Benjamin Fredrick may be ruled out of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after suffering a knee injury during training last Friday.

The setback, confirmed by respected Nigerian journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, forced the 19-year-old to miss his Belgian club’s second league victory of the season against Royal Antwerp.

Initial assessments reportedly indicate that Fredrick could be sidelined until after the AFCON in January, a major blow for Nigeria’s defensive plans. The teenager has enjoyed a rapid rise in the national team setup, earning widespread praise since his impressive debut against Jamaica at the Unity Cup in London last May.

Fredrick’s composed style, aerial dominance and tactical awareness have convinced Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, who has boldly selected him ahead of experienced captain William Troost-Ekong in recent months. The former Flying Eagles star also delivered standout performances in both the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the Playoff matches, cementing his status as one of the most exciting young defenders in Africa.

His absence—if confirmed—would leave Nigeria needing to reshuffle their centre-back options, with fitness concerns already lingering around several senior defenders. The Nigerian Football Federation is expected to provide an official update in the coming days as the AFCON countdown intensifies.

PSG renew chase for  Osimhen despite Enrique’s resistance

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly preparing another major push to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, even though head coach Luis Enrique remains unconvinced about the Galatasaray forward.

The French giants previously explored signing Osimhen last year, but Enrique was not a strong advocate for the move at the time.

However, according to transfer specialist Ekrem Konur, PSG’s hierarchy have reignited their interest after concerns over the inconsistent form of Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos this season. With the club eager to reinforce their frontline and maintain their momentum as defending UEFA Champions League winners, Osimhen has again emerged as one of their priority targets.

The French champions are expected to return with a substantial offer in the summer, with Galatasaray likely to demand a fee well above €100 million. PSG’s interest comes amid growing transfer noise around Osimhen, who has also attracted attention from Premier League sides including Chelsea and Arsenal.

Despite Enrique’s reservations over Osimhen’s playing style, PSG sporting directors see the Nigerian as a proven goalscorer, high-intensity presser and elite-level striker capable of transforming their attack. The summer transfer window is now shaping up to be another major tug-of-war for one of Africa’s most valuable footballers.

    • NSC charts new course

Nigeria’s sports sector took a decisive step toward reform on Monday as top administrators and stakeholders convened for the first edition of the Big Sports Dialogue, addressing long-standing issues in governance, development, media responsibility and gender inclusion.

National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko said the gathering was designed to be solution-driven.

“This is all about charting the way forward, knowing the solutions, not let’s talk about the problems, solutions and of course, giving all the advices  to the Sports Commission,” he said, adding the forum is in line with government-mandated stakeholders’ engagement.

He continued:  “Every agency of government is supposed to have at least one stakeholder, to have what you call  stakeholders’  consultation.

“ So what we see here is part of the stakeholder consultation because we are here now, we are interacting with the stakeholders. So we can feel their pulse. We can see what they are feeling. We can also take the suggestions and the ideas and the contrary views and the analysis of what we are doing. So that when we go back, we will know how to build.”

He  confirmed that the outcomes from the forum  would be properly documented  as a prerequisite  for future engagements and way forward  for Nigerian sports.

Meanwhile, Dikko  condemned  lack  of  data management in Nigeria, stressing that  getting the right statistics remains the country’s biggest gap.

“I can tell you my final take on all this is that there is a lack of data in this country but we have set up a clear data sheet for sports where in  every quarter, we will analyze the impact of sports in Nigeria,” he revealed.“ For the last quarter, we found out we have done almost more than 1% of GDP, nobody had that data(in the past) , but now we have.”

In a related development, the Director-General of the NSC,  Bukola Olapade, has highlighted the Commission’s intervention in women’s representation.

“The NSC created and supported AFAN( Association of Female Athletes of Nigeria)  to join hands with NAWIS(National Association of Women In Sports) to give constitutionally two seats to women in every Federation,” he said.“ What we found when we got there was appalling, a Federation would have 14 men and just one woman and we thought, at this time of inclusivity there was need for us to increase constitutionally their numbers.”

On the panel on media, women and governance, Aishat Falode made an  appeal for greater inclusion of women in sports administration.

She said: “My panel session was on media, women and governance and that’s trying to draw the attention of our administrators to the role and the power that the media has to shape the narrative, the media essentially has the power to change the narrative about sports to protect and preserve the integrity of the sport.”

She underscored women’s outsized contributions compared to their level of recognition: “Women have had to punch themselves over their weight, 63 out of the 85 delegates to the Olympics were women, the women gave us the medals that we celebrate, Indeed the first medal, that Nigeria ever recorded in the Olympics was by a woman.”

Falode stressed that representation must match performance.

“Why would we not give the women the space to continue to thrive, administrators now must speak truth to themselves that for all that we have given, the women have given to Nigerian sports, they deserve better. They deserve better welfare, better incentive, better preparation, better appreciation.”

She insisted that women need critical mass to influence policy.

“When you have only one woman in the midst of 14, 15 men, it becomes a labour to even push your argument through, we keep talking about diversity, inclusion and equity, and you need numbers in order for you to push forward the dialogue.”

Falode closed with a call to action: “We have spoken long enough. I hope that after this, perhaps we will have some kind of implementation and calling people to question where they have failed in terms of what we give back in return for the women’s achievements.”

Galatasaray, EPL clubs renew push for €20m- valued  Onyedika

Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika is again attracting significant transfer interest ahead of the January window, with clubs in the Premier League, Serie A and Turkish giants Galatasaray monitoring his situation closely.

The 24-year-old was on several shortlists during the summer, but Club Brugge opted to retain him as they considered him vital to their season plans.

Now, with the winter window fast approaching, multiple clubs are back at the table. According to transfer analyst Ekrem Konur, Galatasaray have renewed their pursuit as they look to strengthen their midfield. Several Premier League sides—previously linked with Onyedika due to his athleticism and ball-winning ability—are also expected to revive talks, while at least two Serie A clubs are keeping tabs.

Onyedika has developed into one of the Belgian Pro League’s most complete midfielders, combining defensive solidity with progressive distribution and strong physical presence. His performances in the UEFA competitions have further boosted his profile across Europe.

Club Brugge, however, reportedly want at least €20 million for the Nigerian international, who is under contract until June 2027. The Belgian side are reluctant to lose a key player mid-season but could be persuaded if an irresistible offer arrives.

With interest growing on multiple fronts, Onyedika’s January could be one of the most closely watched Nigerian transfer stories.

Ronaldo cleared for 2026 World Cup opener

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo can play in the opening matches of the 2026 World Cup after global football governing body FIFA gave him a partially “suspended” ban following a red card.

The 40-year-old was sent off as Portugal lost 2-0 in Dublin earlier in November when he elbowed Dara O’Shea in the back, for his first dismissal in 226 international appearances.

FIFA banned Ronaldo for three matches, two of which will be suspended and the other has already been served, when Portugal sealed their qualification for next summer’s tournament against Armenia.

“In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the serving of the two remaining matches has been suspended under a one-year probation period,” said FIFA in a statement given to AFP. “If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension set out in the disciplinary decision shall be deemed automatically revoked and the remaining two matches must be served immediately at the next official (Portugal) matches.”

Ronaldo, the men’s all-time top goalscorer in international football with 143 goals, is aiming to play at a sixth World Cup next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker, currently at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has not yet lifted the trophy but did win Euro 2016 with Portugal.

Ronaldo attended a dinner in the White House last week where he met US President Donald Trump, who said his son Barron “is a big fan” of the forward.

The World Cup group stage draw takes place on December 5.
