Tracker: Super Falcons’ stars paint Europe with goals

Super Falcons stars delivered eye-catching performances across Europe last weekend, with Flourish Sabastine, Jennifer Echegini, Toni Payne and Joy Omewa all making significant impacts for their respective clubs.

In the Turkish Women’s Super League, Flourish Sabastine continued her impressive goalscoring form for Fenerbahce, netting the fourth goal in a commanding 5–0 victory over Çekmeköy. The league leaders were lifted by an Andrea Stašková hat-trick, before Sabastine struck in the 76th  minute to take her tally to six league goals this season. Elena Gracinda Santos added a late fifth as Fenerbahce maintained their perfect record—30 points from 10 matches—ahead of a top-of-the-table clash against Galatasaray on December 7.

In France, Jennifer Echegini played a pivotal role in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4–1 triumph over Saint-Étienne in the Première Ligue. The forward scored in stoppage time to round off PSG’s dominant performance after earlier goals from Sakina Karchaoui, Romee Leuchter, and Isabela.

Echegini completed the full match, registering her first league goal of the season to add to her two assists, while compatriot Rasheedat Ajibade was absent from the matchday squad. The win keeps PSG second on the table, three points behind champions Lyon, ahead of a December 5 derby against Marseille.

In England, Toni Payne delivered one of her most decisive displays of the season as Everton defeated Newcastle United 3–1 in the English League Cup. Payne was influential throughout, assisting Latka Snoeijs to double Everton’s lead before scoring just two minutes later after being set up by the Dutch forward. The Super Falcons midfielder completed 90 minutes as the Toffees moved to second in Group A with five points from three matches, setting up a crucial WSL return against Chelsea on December 7.

Meanwhile in Denmark, Joy Omewa extended her remarkable scoring streak for Fortuna Hjørring, striking the match-winning goal in a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over league leaders Køge. Introduced at halftime, Omewa capped a decisive turnaround after Ashley Riefner cancelled out Lacho Marta’s opener. Her goal in the 65th minute took her tally to 13 goals in 14 league matches, keeping her atop the scoring charts as Fortuna trimmed Køge’s lead to three points at the end of the regular season.

  • Enegwea ,Okoro  upbeat on  Heartland’s improvement in NNL campaign

Enegwea ,Okoro  upbeat on  Heartland’s improvement in NNL campaign

Assistant Coach Taiwo Enegwea, said Heartland FC’s s determined push for an early breakthrough was part of a deliberate game plan aimed at reassuring their home fans after the disappointing away loss to Crown FC in Ogbomosho.

Enegwea noted that the players showed strong intent from kickoff and created enough chances to overturn the deficit suffered in their last outing before settling for a 2-1 win over Edel FC in Owerri.

He admitted that poor finishing prevented the Naze Millionaires from scoring more goals despite their dominance but stressed that correcting those lapses will be a priority in their next trainings.

“We were unable to convert the numerous chances that came our way. It will form the basis of our training sessions in the coming days,” Enegwea told journalists in Owerri. “The game plan was to ensure we win the game. The boys came into the game prepared and there was a great determination from the players to get that done. The most important thing is to get the three points.”

He  also expressed confidence in the technical direction of Emmanuel Amuneke, insisting the team will keep improving as they push for promotion. According to him, the defensive error that led to the opponent’s goal was avoidable, but the team’s recovery and overall drive ensured they secured the vital three points.

“The plan is to work on the errors we observed in the game. With Emmanuel Amuneke at the helm corrections would be made. We shall work on improving the team more and able to be in contention for promotion.

“The goal we conceded was an error we conceded from defence. We were unable to recover as quickly as possible when the boys were on counter attack.”

Forward Joel Okoro echoed the coach’s sentiments, revealing that Heartland had to quickly tweak their tactical approach following the early injury to their defensive midfielder. He said the sudden adjustment caused temporary instability, which the opposition capitalised on with a swift counterattack. Okoro described the conceded goal as unfortunate, especially because the speed of the move made recovery difficult.

The attacker also admitted that the team played under pressure after their loss in Ogbomosho, leading to anxiety in front of goal. He explained that the players were eager to score multiple goals to make up for those conceded previously, but that urgency sometimes affected their composure.

Despite the early nerves, Okoro praised his young teammates for rising to the occasion and giving everything until the final whistle. He believes the win will boost their confidence as they continue their push to re-establish themselves as strong promotion contenders.

“We were trying to adjust because of the injury to our defensive midfielder in the opening 15 minutes. We had a change of pattern immediately and it caused a little distress before we kicked on again,” Okoro told journalists after the game.

Guardiola ‘ashamed’ over behaviour at Newcastle

Pep Guardiola said he was “embarrassed and ashamed” of his behaviour after confronting a cameraman following Manchester City’s damaging 2-1 loss at Newcastle on Saturday.

The City manager reacted angrily after he was filmed close up following the final whistle, when he was involved in discussions with Newcastle player Bruno Guimaraes and match officials.

Guardiola had been angered by the decision to award what proved to be Newcastle’s winning goal in the 70th  minute at St James’ Park, with City believing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had been fouled.

The City boss, speaking at a press conference on the eve of his team’s Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen, said he had apologised for his behaviour.

“I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it,” he said. “I don’t like it. I apologised to the cameraman after one second.

“I am who I am. Even after 1,000 games I’m not a perfect person. I made a huge mistake…. The reason why is I want to defend my team and my club.”

But Guardiola said the Newcastle reverse was “immediately forgotten” as he turned his attention to the Champions League.

City are fourth in the 36-team league phase after a strong start to their European campaign.

Midfielders Rodri and Mateo Kovacic are unavailable for today’s match against Leverkusen.

Guardiola said he did not have a timescale for Rodri’s return but it would not be long before he was back in action.

“We will wait a little more to be sure he is fine,” he said.

  • FIFA , Saudi Fund for Development secure $1 billion to boost sports infrastructure in developing countries

FIFA , Saudi Fund for Development secure $1 billion to boost sports infrastructure in developing countries

FIFA and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) have entered into a landmark partnership aimed at transforming sports infrastructure across developing nations.

Both bodies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide up to USD 1 billion in concessional loans for the construction and rehabilitation of FIFA-certified stadiums and essential surrounding infrastructure.

The initiative is designed to support FIFA Member Associations (MAs) in countries where investment in sports can significantly contribute to national development. Priority will be given to nations with clear strategies to use sport as a tool for economic and social progress.

According to global assessments, the sports sector contributes nearly 2% of the world’s GDP, underscoring its growing influence on employment, tourism, and community development. Yet, despite FIFA’s 211 Member Associations worldwide, a significant infrastructure gap persists between nations with modern, world-class facilities and those without.

This new partnership aims to bridge that divide. The concessional loans will enable governments to build or upgrade multi-sport venues that meet international standards while serving as community hubs for education, social inclusion, and youth development. The projects are expected to create jobs, stimulate local economies, and provide safe, modern spaces for young people to train and compete.

SFD and FIFA will work closely with national authorities to identify and deliver projects that support long-term economic resilience. The initiative is also intended to attract further investment from private-sector partners, regional organisations, and other development finance institutions creating a scalable model for sustainable sports development.

SFD CEO Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad emphasised the transformative power of sport, stating: “Sport is more than competition it’s a catalyst for development and inclusion. Through concessional financing, we are helping countries build the infrastructure they need to unlock potential, empower young people, and strengthen communities for generations to come.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino welcomed the agreement, saying: “FIFA’s role is to develop football worldwide, and many of our Member Associations need additional support for the infrastructure necessary to host competitions. This agreement is a crucial step in ensuring our Members have the facilities to make football truly global.”

For the Saudi Fund for Development, the partnership aligns with its long-standing mission to support growth and development across emerging economies. Over the past five decades, the SFD has financed more than 800 development projects worth over USD 22 billion in 100 countries, and the inclusion of sports infrastructure marks a new chapter in its global development agenda.

Premier League: Everton beat Man Utd despite Queye’s red for striking team-mate- reaction & report

Ten-man Everton held on for a rare and quite amazing Old Trafford victory after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for striking team-mate Michael Keane after just 13 minutes against Manchester United.

In quite incredible scenes, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had to hold Gueye back as he took exception to a few choice words from Keane after Everton had defended a United attack.

Gueye got near enough to slap Keane on the cheek. The action triggered a red card from referee Tony Harrington and more choice words from Keane, who angrily gestured for Gueye to get off the pitch.

It was an incident reminiscent of when Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyer had to be separated as they were sent off for fighting with each other during their Newcastle days.

Gueye’s red card was part of a calamitous opening for the visitors, who also lost skipper Seamus Coleman to injury just 10 minutes into his first league start of the season.

Staggeringly, against a United side who knew victory would take them fifth in the table and on a ground where they have won once since August 1992, Everton then went in front when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall surged to the edge of the area, then sent a curling effort past goalkeeper Senne Lammens into the top corner.

Predictably, United swarmed all over their opponents looking for a way back into the contest but the equaliser would not come as Everton became the first away team to win a Premier League game at Old Trafford despite having a man sent off.

It was also a night of glory for former United boss David Moyes, who won at this stadium as an opposition manager in the Premier League for the first time.

  • Lazio freeze Dele-Bashiru due to next month’s AFCON

Lazio freeze Dele-Bashiru due to next month’s AFCON

Lazio have  reportedly decided against reinstating Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to their Serie A squad for yesterday’s home game againstLecce  despite the fact that he  was  fit.

Dele-Bashiru was cut off the Serie A squad in September following a muscle injury in the Rome Derby against AS Roma but has since recovered but he has not yet been reinstated  despite the fact that Nicolo Rovella is expected to be sidelined for a significant period.

However, a leading  Italian football outfit  has offered  the reason behind  Dele Bashiru’s  present situation at Lazio  which is not unconnected  with his possible recall  for super Eagles’ campaign at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Morocco.

Before being out injured in September, the 24-year-old  has played just  four times  for the Biancocelesti in this on-going campaign.

But apart from this  supposedly ‘underwhelming performances at the start of the season’, a correspondent at Football Italia, has claimed  that  Lazio  coach Maurizio Sarri was not ready to  accommodate  the Nigeria International in his plans since he would soon  be jetting out  for the AFCON .

“There is a reason why Dele-Bashiru has not been brought back into Lazio’s Serie A squad, though. He will soon be jetting off for the Africa Cup of Nations, so changing the squad list would have only created further confusion within the squad and would not have made much sense,” the  report noted. “A final decision will be made at the end of the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Lazio still need to take into account whether there might be any opportunities for the Nigeria international on the transfer market, and whether they will want more freedom to move things around in their current squad,” the report added.

Meanwhile,  Lazio  last night secured a 2-0  victory over Lecce  at Stadio Olimpico.
