  • Kane double gives England record-setting finish to W’Cup 2026

Kane double gives England record-setting finish to W’Cup 2026

Harry Kane put the seal on flawless England’s record-setting finish to their World Cup qualifying campaign with a late double in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Albania.

Kane struck twice in the closing stages as Thomas Tuchel’s made history in Tirana.

After an eighth successive Group K victory, England are the first European side to go through a World Cup qualifying campaign of at least six matches with an 100 percent record and no goals conceded.

They are the first European team to win all their World Cup qualifiers since Germany in 2018.

England have not lost a World Cup qualifier in 39 games since 2009 when they were beaten 1-0 in Ukraine.

They scored 22 goals and allowed none in a perfect path to next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Spain, like England yet to concede a goal, and Norway have also won all their qualifiers. Both have one game left.

England’s run of 10 consecutive competitive wins without conceding a goal equals Spain’s European record.

The Three Lions also end 2025 with their highest win percentage in a calendar year since 1946 – nine victories from 10 games under Tuchel featuring only one blemish in a friendly loss to Senegal in June.

Tuchel started his reign with a 2-0 win against Albania in March and the same opponents book-ended a memorable first year in charge for the German.

Although England wrapped up their World Cup place in October, they followed Tuchel’s demand to stay focused, beating Serbia on Thursday and dispatching obdurate Albania.

Far sterner tests lie in in wait at the World Cup but Tuchel has recovered from a sluggish start to his reign to provide genuine belief that England can win a major trophy for the first time since 1966.

By the time they return to action with two friendlies in March, Tuchel will know who England will face at the World Cup after the draw in Washington on December 5.

Tuchel made seven changes as he brought Jude Bellingham back into the starting line-up for the first time since June after restricting him to a substitute appearance against Serbia.

Although England enjoyed over 70 percent of the possession, they found it hard to carve open Albania, on an eight-match unbeaten run that ranked as their best in 15 years.

Sylvinho’s combative side nearly snatched a shock lead when Elseid Hysaj curled just over from the edge of the area.

Left out of the October internationals, Bellingham had a point to prove to Tuchel as he fights for starting berth at the World Cup after Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers impressed in his absence.

The Real Madrid midfielder’s contribution was patchy until he drove forward to set up Jarrod Bowen for a low strike that Thomas Strakosha pushed around the post.

England’s clean-sheet run almost came to an end immediately after the interval.

Dean Henderson, deputising for Jordan Pickford, flung himself to the left to parry Arber Hoxha’s stinging shot.

Henderson made an equally good save moments later, blocking Hoxha’s close-range effort after Dan Burn’s miscued pass put England in danger.

Kane said on Saturday that England want to build an NFL-style playbook to help make the most of set-pieces at the World Cup.

Fittingly, the England captain, a noted NFL fan, struck from a set-piece in the 74th  minute.

Bukayo Saka’s corner was flicked into the six-yard box and Kane tapped in after Strakosha failed to gather.

The Bayern Munich striker wasn’t done yet and he netted again in the 82nd minute to make it 78 goals for England in 112 appearances.

Marcus Rashford’s cross was perfectly weighted for Kane to thump his header past Strakosha from five yards, concluding England’s campaign with a flourish.

Lewandowski mulls free transfer to AC Milan

AC Milan are reportedly trying to secure Barcelona veteran Robert Lewandowski as a free agent when his contract expires in June 2026, and he is giving hope to the Rossoneri.

According to Sky Sport Deutschland, Lewandowski has rejected a proposal from Fenerbahce and is eager to continue playing at a high level next term.

This gives Milan hope they can beat the competition from the Saudi Pro League and a salary offer that they simply couldn’t match.

“I will soon be ready to decide which direction to take,” Lewandowski told TVP Sport, via Calciomercato.

“I will evaluate all the options. I don’t know where I’ll be or what I will want to do in a few months’ time.”

Milan already saw a similar approach prove successful for Luka Modric when his deal was allowed to run down at Real Madrid, as the 40-year-old Croatia international is showing he can still make an impact.

He made the move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona for €45m in 2022 and scored seven goals in 12 appearances for the Blaugrana this season between LaLiga and Champions League.

  • Haaland’s Norway book W’Cup 2026 spot as Italy book  playoffs spot

Haaland’s Norway book W’Cup 2026 spot as Italy book  playoffs spot

Norway qualified for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday after a 4-1 win away to Italy in their final qualifying match, condemning the hosts, who have missed out on the last two editions of the tournament, to the playoffs.

Norway ended the qualifying campaign with a perfect record of eight wins, finishing six points ahead of four-times World Cup winners Italy, who will compete in the playoffs for the third consecutive occasion.

Needing a nine-goal win because of Norway’s superior goal difference, the Italians came out full of aggression and made the early breakthrough just after the 10-minute mark, as Francesco Pio Esposito swept in a close-range finish.

The hosts were dominant until the last minutes of the first half and went close to a second goal several times with Norway having only a half-chance when a shot from Antonio Nusa went over the bar.

However, it was a completely different Norway in the second half and Nusa equalised in the 63rd minute with a left-foot finish from inside the box.

With Norway in control in the closing stages, Italy paid the price for leaving Erling Haaland unmarked in the box in the 78th  minute as he met a cross and volleyed home with ease.

Haaland then wrapped up the match with a second goal a minute later, taking his tally for the campaign to 16.

Jorgen Strand Larsen scored the fourth in stoppage time for the visitors, who showed they would be no pushovers at next year’s tournament.

  • DR Congo beat Nigeria on penalties to secure World Cup playoff victory

DR Congo beat Nigeria on penalties to secure World Cup playoff victory

DR Congo bounced back from an early setback to defeat Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the CAF World Cup playoff final in Rabat, booking their place in the intercontinental playoffs in March.

Nigeria took the lead in the third minute when Frank Onyeka capitalised on a defensive error, slotting a deflected effort past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute as Meschack Elia lifted the ball over Stanley Nwabali after Cedric Bakambu’s cross found him.

The second half and extra time produced few clear chances, though DR Congo had two goals disallowed. Nigeria made six changes during the match, including substituting Victor Osimhen at half-time, but struggled to regain attacking momentum.

The penalty shootout began shakily for both teams, with Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missing, while Samuel Moutoussamy was denied for DR Congo. The turning point came when goalkeeper Dimitry Fayulu saved Semi Ajayi’s attempt, leaving captain Chancel Mbemba to convert the decisive kick and spark celebrations among Congolese supporters.

DR Congo now await an intercontinental opponent for a shot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria, seeking a return after missing the 2022 tournament, face a second consecutive disappointment.

China-NUJ FCT hold 2025 table tennis tournament as Amajor, He Ling emerge champions

The 7th edition of the China-NUJ FCT Council annual table tennis tournament concluded on a cheery note, with Chioma Amajor of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abuja Correspondents Chapel emerging as female singles champion.

In her remarks while declaring the event open, the Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, commended the friendship, collaboration, and healthy competition between the NUJ and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Nigeria. She said that table tennis is more than just a sport, describing it as a celebration of skill, agility, and perseverance—values that resonate deeply with the spirit of journalism and the unity it upholds.

“I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the China Cultural Center for their invaluable support in making this tournament possible. Their commitment to fostering cultural exchange and friendship through sport truly enriches this event. We are grateful for their partnership and dedication to strengthening ties between our communities,” she said.

Chioma Amajor defeated Nie Xiaohua of the Chinese Cultural Center 11-2, 8-11, 11-9 in the final to emerge champion of the 2025 edition in Abuja on Saturday, while Chen Huiling came third.

In the male singles category, Ignatius Nkoh of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) came third behind He Ling, who emerged champion, and Wang Yongtao, the first runner-up. Victor Okoye of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), making his debut in the tournament, also gave a good account of himself, dismissing his Chinese opponent in the round of 32 in two straight sets. He also defeated his colleague and fellow compatriot, Fortune Abang (2-0) in the Round of 16 before bowing out gracefully in the quarter-finals to Chinese top-rated player Gao Qian after a pulsating and nerve-wracking two-set encounter.

NAN reports that winners of each category received a cash reward of N250,000, second-place winners received N200,000, while third-place winners took home N150,000.

Earlier at the opening ceremony, the Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Nigeria, Mr. Tang Jianxing, said that the competition is part of table tennis diplomacy. He noted that Nigeria and China are very close friends, saying that Nigeria ranks among the first five friendly nations to China.

Jianxing, who is also the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, said there is mutual respect between both countries and that the competition was also an opportunity to get closer at heart and know each other better through sports.

“I have to thank the NUJ and all the journalists in your country. Without your understanding, focus on China, appreciation of Chinese culture, and commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation, the comprehensive strategic partnership between our countries cannot stand the test of time,” he said.

In his goodwill message, the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mallam Ali M. Ali, said that NAN is proud to be associated with the tournament. Represented by Deputy Editor-in-Chief Mr. Oluwole Shogunle, Ali said that the event represents values promoted by NAN.

“It fosters friendship, stronger bilateral relations, and team building, and these are the values we promote in the News Agency of Nigeria. So we are glad to be here today to be associated with this event. We congratulate the organisers, the NUJ, and the Chinese Embassy for putting this together,” he said.

Also, the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Mr. Salihu Dembos, commended the centre for sustaining the competition to its 7th edition. Represented by the General Manager Sports, Mr. Ademuyi Kayode, Dembos recalled that table tennis was established in the late 19th century but became an official Olympic sport in 1988.

He said that since then, Nigeria had been waxing stronger and has won many international medals across competitions. He added that given the level of talent displayed at the annual event, it is time to involve the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation.

  • Eze confident Arsenal will have great season

Eze confident Arsenal will have great season

Eberechi Eze has explained why he is convinced it will be a great season for Arsenal as he works towards becoming a “complete player”.

The Premier League leaders sit four points above second-place Manchester City after 11 games and are expected to go deep in the Champions League as well this season.

Arsenal have finished second in the league in each of the last three seasons but have been the top-flight’s strongest team in the first three months of this campaign as they bid for a first league title since 2003-04.

New signings such as Eze, Noni Madueke, and Martin Zubimendi have made a positive impact.

“I am confident it will be a great season,” Eze said after scoring a sublime goal for England in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Serbia. “That’s the aim. That’s what we’re striving towards and working towards every day, club and country. I guess it’s an exciting time.”

England head into Sunday’s final qualifier in Albania yet to concede a single goal in Group K, and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side have conceded just five goals in the league.

Eze, asked about playing for teams that don’t ship goals, said: “It’s good to be part of these types of squads where the players at the back are so solid and so on it, and they’re just so structured.

“You control a lot of the game, and you have plenty of opportunities to go up the other end. So yes, it’s fun for me, and it’s enjoyable, and I pray to God it continues.”
