“With Nathan Tella, the injury was more difficult and complicated than we first thought,” Hjulmand said per Werkself Xtra. “I think he’ll need the international break as well. It’s looking better and better, but I can’t say when he’ll return exactly.”

  • SWAN @60: Shaibu canvasses  political will to drive sports development

SWAN @60: Shaibu canvasses  political will to drive sports development

Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has emphasized that political will remains the missing link in Nigeria’s quest for genuine sports development.

Shaibu stated this while delivering the keynote address titled “Political Will as a Driver of National Development” at the 60th Diamond Anniversary Lecture of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) held yesterday, at the VIP Lounge, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The event, which had dignitaries including the National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, his Director General, Bukola Olopade, the wife of the Senate President, Mrs Ekaete Godswill Akpabio who was represented by Mrs Matilda Samson Ekong among others in attendance, celebrated six decades of SWAN’s contribution to sports journalism and national development.

Shaibu commended SWAN for its unwavering commitment to promoting sports excellence in Nigeria, noting that for 60 years, the association had served as the “voice of Nigerian sports,” documenting triumphs, analysing challenges, and advocating for growth.

Speaking on the theme, Shaibu described political will as the “genuine commitment of leaders to pursue difficult but necessary actions for the long-term benefit of the nation.” He outlined three critical dimensions of political will — vision and commitment, courage to implement tough reforms, and consistency in execution — as essential ingredients for transformative leadership.

“Political will manifests in the courage to take tough decisions, the vision to see a better future, and the consistency to follow through despite political transitions,” Shaibu said.

Using the sports sector as a mirror of national governance, Shaibu lamented the neglect of Nigeria’s sporting infrastructure, which he said reflected a deeper lack of political will.

“Some of our facilities at the National Institute for Sports have trees growing through tennis courts. This symbolizes not just physical decay but decades of policy neglect,” he noted.

He, however, cited his experience as Edo State Deputy Governor as evidence that political commitment could drive transformation. The renovation of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and development of mini-stadia across the state, according to him, were “manifestations of political will translated into concrete action.”

Highlighting the economic potential of sports, Shaibu said investing in sports development was not an act of charity but a strategic economic decision.

“The global sports industry is worth about $500 billion. It generates jobs, promotes tourism, and stimulates manufacturing and broadcasting. Sports is an economic goldmine that can employ millions of Nigerian youths,” he stated.

He stressed that for Nigeria to unlock its development potential, leaders must demonstrate political will that transcends rhetoric and short-term political gains. Shaibu argued that while the country has never lacked brilliant policies, the real challenge lies in implementation, continuity, and prioritization.

Citing examples from nations like Singapore, South Korea, and Rwanda, he said strong political will had transformed their development trajectories despite limited natural resources.

Shaibu also challenge  sports journalists to play a crucial role in building and sustaining political will through advocacy, accountability, and public enlightenment.

“SWAN must continue to hold sports administrators accountable, highlight development gaps, and educate the public on how sports can drive economic growth,” he urged.

Proposing a way forward, Shaibu outlined a five-point framework for strengthening political will as a driver of development:

    Institutional Strengthening – ensuring continuity beyond individual leaders; Data-Driven Decision Making – basing policies on research and evidence; Stakeholder Engagement – involving media, civil society, and private sector;

Transparency and Accountability – tracking and evaluating policy commitments; and Capacity Building – developing competent professionals to implement reforms.

Shaibu reaffirmed his commitment to implementing these principles at the National Institute for Sports, pledging that the NIS under his leadership would promote research, training, and partnerships that align with national development goals.

“We must begin to see sports not as recreation, but as a business and a vital pillar of national development,” he concluded.

The lecture formed part of SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations themed “The Power of Sports Media: Honouring its Legacy, Shaping the Future.”

Dikko dispels rumors on controversial  FIFA Goal Project in Kebbi

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has dismissed recent insinuations surrounding the FIFA Goal Project in Kebbi State, describing them as misleading and politically motivated.

Speaking on the issue, Dikko, who disclosed that he was the first Nigerian to oversee a FIFA Goal Project in the country, affirmed that the Kebbi facility followed due process and met all FIFA standards before commissioning.

“I was the first person to handle a FIFA Goal Project in Nigeria, hence I can speak to the Kebbi project issue,” he stated. “The project was advertised as reflected on the requisite website before it was given. It totally followed due process and was certified and commissioned by FIFA.”

Dikko explained that the global football body released $1.2 million—equivalent to about ₦300 million at the time—for the project, and that every expenditure was properly accounted for. He cautioned against drawing unfair parallels between Nigeria’s project and the ongoing Nairobi facility, which he said was a completely different undertaking by the Kenyan government valued at over $300 million.

“It is absurd to juxtapose the Kebbi project and that of the Nairobi project being put in place by the Kenyan government at over $300 million,” Dikko emphasized.

He urged journalists and sports stakeholders to always verify information before publication, noting that unverified reports could damage the integrity of national efforts and distract from pressing sporting goals.

“As professionals, I advise that you always seek clarification and check before you jump into conclusion,” he cautioned. “Is it this time we are struggling to qualify for the FIFA World Cup that we are supposed to bring unverified stories and spread by certain people based on politics and other issues?”

Dikko reiterated the Commission’s commitment to transparency and accountability in all sports development projects, assuring Nigerians that the Kebbi FIFA Goal Project remains a model of due process and compliance.

  • Senate President’s wife urges support for girl-child empowerment through sports

Senate President’s wife urges support for girl-child empowerment through sports

The wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Ekaete Unoma Godswill Akpabio has made a passionate call for the empowerment of the Nigerian girl child through sports, stressing that when girls are given equal opportunities, the entire nation benefits.

Delivering her keynote address at an event organized by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) marking the 60th  celebration/diamond jubilee anniversary of the Association, Mrs. Akpabio who was represented by Mrs. Matilda Samson Ekong celebrated the remarkable achievements of Nigerian female athletes who have brought global recognition to the nation despite facing enormous challenges.

“Nigeria’s basketball team has risen above the odds to dominate the African Championship and earn global respect. Our track queens, from Chioma Ajunwa, who made history with Nigeria’s first Olympic gold in 1996, to Tobi Amusan, who stunned the world with her record-breaking performance, have proven that when Nigerian women rise, the world takes notice,” she said.

Mrs. Ekong, speaking with conviction, emphasized that behind every successful woman athlete is a girl who dared to dream, often in the face of discouragement and limited opportunities.

She lamented that too many Nigerian girls are still denied access to sports facilities, discouraged by societal norms that view sports as male-dominated, and burdened by cultural expectations that restrict their growth.

“We lose potential every time a young girl is told to sit on the side-line while others play,” she warned. “Empowering the girl child through sport means changing mind-sets — in families, schools, and communities.”

Mrs. Ekong underscored that sports are not merely about competition but also a tool for personal development, discipline and confidence. She urged parents to recognize the transformative power of sports and support their daughters in pursuing it.

Sharing an inspiring story, she recounted the journey of Talia Lorepo, a Kenyan girl who defied social and economic odds to become the first African woman to win the New York City Marathon. Lorepo’s success, Mrs. Ekong noted, went beyond medals — she became a beacon of hope and a unifier through her foundation.

“That is the power of sports empowerment,” she explained. “It’s not just about medals; it’s about transformation — creating ripples of possibility that spread across families, communities, and generations.”

Read Also: NFF chieftains commend Salami on revival of Shooting Stars

She also challenged sports journalists to use their platforms to highlight the achievements of female athletes and inspire future generations.

“The stories you tell can inspire millions,” she said. “When you highlight the struggles and victories of our women athletes, you make it possible for another little girl to dream.”

Mrs. Ekong further called on corporate Nigeria — banks, telecoms, oil and gas, and manufacturing companies — to partner with government and civil society in investing in sports development, particularly for young girls.

“When you invest in girls’ sports, you are not just funding play; you are fuelling progress,” she asserted. “You are creating confident young women who will become innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders.”

As she rounded off her address, Mrs. Ekong urged Nigerians to build a society where girls have equal access to opportunities, are celebrated for their talents, and are empowered to lead.

“Engaging the girl child through sports is not just a goal; it is a duty. If we give our girls the same chance we give our boys, we are not just raising athletes — we are raising leaders, teachers, journalists, and citizens who will move this nation forward,” she declared.
