Arsenal 1-0 Crystal Palace: Arteta hails ‘massive’ win that means more than most

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta hailed his team’s gritty 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace as their most valuable of the season, praising his players’ resilience amid a relentless schedule and against a well-drilled opponent.

“Fully agree, I value more this victory than any other this season,” Arteta told reporters.

“Coming from playing every three days (they beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday and next play Brighton in the League Cup on Wednesday), you play against one of the teams I think is one of the best, when you lose that concentration they can punish you.

“A massive win. We knew the difficulty of it.”

The victory, sealed by a stunning set-piece goal from Eberechi Eze against his former club, widened Arsenal’s lead at the top of the league table to four points. But Arteta was quick to temper any title talk.

“It’s very early, we’re still in October,” he said. “The emotional state is really high but there are a lot of things to get better. Let’s try and recover for Wednesday.”

Rivals Manchester City and Liverpool both lost this weekend, which contributed to

“It shows you how hard this league is,” Arteta said. “The players aren’t allowed their phones so I hope (that they weren’t following other results).

“We are where we are,” he added. “It’s a credit to us because we have been very consistent. It doesn’t mean much other than we are doing a lot of things.”

The match-winner came from a set-piece, an area Arsenal have clearly refined. They have a league-high 11 goals from dead-ball situations.

“We have noticed a shift, methods that are implemented that are more efficient,” Arteta said. “You can contain the spaces, because you are better and we have to find a way to score in different ways.”

Eze’s brilliant finish that obviously held a lot of meaning coming against the team for which he played for five seasons drew praise from his manager.

“He was super relaxed before the game,” Arteta said. “Such a strong feeling and gratitude. The technique (on the goal) is unbelievable. We needed something (special) against a team so well organised.”

Bellingham claims  Madrid’s Clasico win over Barca

Jude Bellingham’s goal helped Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 to win a tense Clasico and move five points clear of their bitter rivals at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

Champions Barcelona won all four times the teams were pitted against each other last season but in his first Clasico as Real Madrid coach, Xabi Alonso snapped that run.

Kylian Mbappe, who later missed a penalty, fired Madrid in front and although Fermin Lopez levelled for the visitors at the Santiago Bernabeu, Bellingham netted a second for the hosts before half-time which proved decisive.

Barca playmaker Pedri was sent off in the final stages for a second yellow card as tensions spilled over in the Spanish capital.

Madrid’s victory means they have won nine of their opening 10 league games and Alonso’s side proved against Barca they can triumph on the big occasion, following their derby humbling by Atletico Madrid in September.

“Against Atletico we didn’t play how we wanted and today we had another chance to show what we can do, and we have to continue like this,” said Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Alonso said his team “needed this feeling of being able to win a big game” after last season’s struggles against Barca.

The Spaniard’s counterpart on the touchline was Hansi Flick’s assistant Marcus Sorg, as the German coach was suspended following a red card last weekend as they scraped a victory over relegation-battling Girona.

“The season is long, we have 28 more games and we’re not scared about the situation now,” said Sorg after the defeat.

Barcelona were without several regular starters, including Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo among others, while Lamine Yamal still does not appear fully fit after a groin injury but started.

The teenager wound up Madrid fans in the week by claiming Los Blancos “steal” and “complain” and his name was greeted with a chorus of jeers when read out before kick-off.

Barcelona had more of the ball in the first half but it was largely sterile possession and Madrid created the most dangerous opportunities.

The hosts were awarded an early penalty when Yamal clashed with Vinicius Junior, but it was cancelled after a VAR review.

Madrid fans’ ire at the officials grew when Mbappe blasted home from outside the area but the goal was ruled out for a millimetre offside against the French superstar.

Mbappe did not have long to wait before he could celebrate in earnest, after fine movement and a perfect pass by Bellingham sent him through on goal.

The forward, the division’s top goalscorer, netted his 11th league goal of the campaign with a lethal low finish past Wojciech Szczesny.

The Polish goalkeeper made several more saves and it was against the run of play when Barcelona equalised.

Arda Guler gave away possession in a dangerous area and Marcus Rashford, playing in his first Clasico, crossed for Lopez to blast the visitors level in the 38th  minute.

Bellingham struck Madrid’s second five minutes later to give Los Blancos a deserved advantage at the interval.

The England international, who scored his first goal at the Bernabeu since April in midweek against Juventus, gleefully tapped home after Eder Militao nodded Vinicius’s cross back into his path.

Madrid should have extended their lead at the start of the second half but Szczesny made a fine save to push out Mbappe’s penalty, after Eric Garcia was penalised for handball.

Yamal, frustrated and struggling to make an impact on the game, sent a long-range shot high over the bar as Madrid closed ranks and kept the Catalans at a safe distance from their goal.

Sorg sent defender Ronald Araujo up front during nine minutes of stoppage time in desperation, but unlike last weekend it did not pay off.

Pedri was sent off in the final seconds for a second yellow card for a late foul on Tchouameni, sparking a brief side-line shoving match, while players from both sides rowed after the final whistle.

”(Yamal) needs more rhythm, more games, on the highest level, it’s normal (after injury). He’s 18, we have to help him and we will do it all together,” added Sorg, after the winger was nullified by Madrid.

“They defended well, Real, we have to accept this.”

Eze opens  Arsenal’s account  with winner against Palace

Eberechi Eze scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal against his former side Crystal Palace to extend the North London club’s lead at the top of the standings.

Eze, who spent five seasons at Selhurst Park before Arsenal signed him in August, struck in the 39th  minute on Sunday when Gabriel Magalhaes headed Declan Rice’s free kick into his path. The midfielder leapt to steer a first-time finish past Dean Henderson.

The victory extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run to six league matches and 10 games in all competitions, and opened up a four-point cushion over second-placed Bournemouth with 22 points after nine games.

The second half at the Emirates Stadium had a far different feel as Arsenal pressed for a second goal, with a flurry of chances including a chance at an easy tap-in for Bukayo Saka that Palace defender Marc Guehi scrambled to boot clear.

EPL: Bournemouth up to second with victory over Dyche’s Forest

Sean Dyche’s first Premier League game in charge of Nottingham Forest ended in defeat as Bournemouth moved up to second in the Premier League with a thoroughly deserved victory.

Forest, 2-0 winners over Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, were comfortably second best at Vitality Stadium, but they fell behind in unconventional circumstances when Marcus Tavernier’s corner sailed over goalkeeper Matz Sels and straight into the net.

Forest were aggrieved at the decision to award Bournemouth a corner in the first place, with Tavernier’s cross appearing to hit Neco Williams and rebound off the Bournemouth winger’s foot before looping out of play.

There was little the visitors could do about Bournemouth’s second, though, as Eli Junior Kroupi collected a loose ball before arrowing a low shot into the bottom corner from 30 yards for his fourth goal in three Cherries appearances.

While the second half was less of a mismatch, Bournemouth’s lead rarely looked under threat as the visitors struggled to mount any sort of fightback.

They almost reduced the arrears through Morgan Gibbs-White late in the second half, but goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic produced a fine one-handed save to deny the England international.

The win moves Andoni Iraola’s team four points behind leaders Arsenal, while Forest remain in the relegation zone after suffering their sixth league defeat of the campaign.

EPL: Burnley’s Foster hits 95th-minute winner in brutal blow to Wolves

Lyle Foster’s 95th-minute winner earned Burnley their first away victory of the season to leave Wolves winless and rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

The substitute struck late just as it looked like Wolves had earned a point after fighting back from 2-0 down.

Zian Flemming’s first-half double put the Clarets in charge but Jorgen Strand Larsen’s penalty and Marshall Munetsi’s header hauled the hosts level before the break.

Wolves were unable to captialise on their momentum and fans again turned on executive chairman Jeff Shi and owners Fosun.

They vented their anger after Flemming’s opener – a brilliantly taken first-time volley – and following his second, with few signs of recovery in sight.

But when Josh Cullen kicked Santiago Bueno, Strand Larsen scored from the spot and Wolves had hope, with Munetsi levelling in first-half stoppage time.

At full-time Wolves fans and players looked to be having a heated discussion while the home supporters chanted “sacked in the morning” towards manager Vitor Pereira.

The result might have been different, with Jhon Arias’ free-kick hitting the bar as the home side tried to complete their fightback in the second half.

Martin Dubravka’s late save from Bueno helped earn Burnley’s victory – their first on the road in the Premier League since April 2024 – which lifts them to 16th and five points above the relegation zone.

El Clásico: Bellingham scores winner as Real Madrid beat Barcelona

Jude Bellingham scored and assisted for the first time in La Liga this season as Real Madrid overcame Barcelona in a breathless and fiery Clasico at the Bernabeu.

The England midfielder produced a defence-splitting through ball to tee up Kylian Mbappe for the 22nd-minute opener, before his 43rd-minute tap-in restored his side’s lead, five minutes after Fermin Lopez had levelled.

It was Bellingham’s fourth goal in five appearances in the clash between the league’s top two sides, with Xabi Alonso’s men moving five points clear of Barcelona as the game ended with Pedri sent off and clashes on the touchline.

Real lost all four Clasicos in all competitions last season, but from minute one set about breaching Barcelona’s high defensive line.

The hosts were awarded a penalty when Vinicius Jr went down inside the opening two minutes, but a video assistant referee (VAR) review determined the Real Madrid winger had kicked the leg of Lamine Yamal before he went down.

Ten minutes after VAR had ruled out a stunning 25-yard Mbappe volley from the edge of the box for a marginal offside, Bellingham spun away from Pedri before sliding a pass through to the French striker to slot past Wojciech Szczesny.

Madrid peppered Barca’s third-choice goalkeeper with shots, but were caught out by a 38th-minute counter-attack that ended with Marcus Rashford squaring for Fermin to equalise.

And more controversy followed as Hansi Flick’s side went behind again before the break.

Barcelona’s players felt Real defender Dean Huijsen fouled Pau Cubarsi as he tried to clear Eder Militao’s header across the face of goal, but Bellingham was left unmarked at the back post to score.

Mbappe was denied a second when he converted from another offside position following a magical team move started by Vinicius and Bellingham having his effort stopped.

The second half began with VAR intervening once again to award Los Blancos a debatable penalty when the ball inadvertently struck the hand of Eric Garcia as he slid in to challenge Bellingham and the rebound ricocheted back on to him.

Szczesny, though, produced a fine one-handed stop to keep out Mbappe’s spot-kick in the 52nd minute.

Bellingham then tapped in from Brahim Diaz’s low cross with 20 minutes remaining but, for a third time, Madrid were denied by an offside call.

The visitors struggled to test Real keeper Thibaut Courtois and the match ended in chaos with clashes on the touchline between the rivals.

Tempers flared after Pedri was shown a second yellow card for a lunge on Aurelien Tchouameni deep into injury-time.

Eberechi Eze scored against his former club as Arsenal beat Crystal Palace to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points.

Eze joined the Gunners in a deal worth £67m in the summer and his winner came from another trademark Arsenal set-piece.

Declan Rice curled a free-kick into the area which was knocked down by centre-back Gabriel, then Eze acrobatically fired the ball into the corner of the net.

Crystal Palace, who lost to AEK Larnaca in midweek, did threaten on occasion with Jean-Philippe Mateta battling against the solid Arsenal defence – but they did not trouble David Raya in goal.

Arsenal nearly doubled their lead in the second half when Gabriel hit the crossbar with a header and Bukayo Saka went close with a curled effort from the edge of the penalty area.

The win means Arsenal are now unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions.

  • 2025 El Clásico: Things to know as Real Madrid take on Barcelona

2025 El Clásico: Things to know as Real Madrid take on Barcelona

Real Madrid are set to welcome Barcelona in an El Clasico clash scheduled to take place on Sunday, 26 October 2025 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The two Spanish giants are set for a top spot battle in the La Liga standings with Barca looking to yet again defeat Los Blancos in arguably the most watched fixture in football.

    Teams’ Form and Recent Performances

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid have had an almost unblemished 2025/26 season under new head coach Xabi Alonso following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

The Spanish giants have been in scintillating form having won all but one of their matches across all competitions this season which culminated in them claiming top spot in the league standings as well as sitting pretty well in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League league phase table following a 1-0 win over Juventus in matchday three of the European competition.

Jude Bellingham gave Madrid a well deserved lead in the second half to continue their 100 percent start to the competition they have won a record 15 times.

Alonso’s side’s only loss of the campaign was the embarrassing 5-2 defeat to their city rivals Atletico Madrid in the league last month.

El Clasico will no doubt be Madrid’s biggest test as they face a side they have failed to defeat on four different occasions last season.

    Barcelona

Barcelona started the 2025/26 season in an impressive fashion just as how they ended the 2024/25 campaign which saw them win the domestic treble ( La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana).

However, the Blaugrana lost their two matches just before the last international break. A 2-1 loss at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League was followed by a shocking 4-1 defeat away to Sevilla.

It has been a different affair for Hansi Flick’s side after the break as they have won each of their two matches since then. A 6-1 home thrashing of Greek giants Olympiacos came right after a narrow 2-1 win against Girona in the Catalan derby.

Barca will now be going into the heavy clash with Real Madrid with some sort of confidence.

    Head-To-Head Record

Real Madrid and Barcelona have met on 216 occasions across all competitions. Los Blancos hold a slender lead with 106 victories to Barca’s 104 wins while 51 matches have ended with the two teams sharing the spoils.

Read Also: Nigeria’s capital gains tax reform: between fairness and investment deterrence

The last eight matches between these two sides have ended in four victories apiece with Madrid winning the first four while Barca have won each of the last four including a 4-3 triumph which puts them on the brink of winning their 25th top-flight title last term.

A brace from Raphinha as well as Lamine Yamal and Eric Garcia’s strikes meant Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick counted almost for nothing for Madrid, who lost four Clasicos in a season for the first time since the 1982/83 term.

Key Players To Watch Out For

    Real Madrid

    Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe has been in a breathtaking form since the beginning of the season having scored 16 goals in all competitions.

The France international scored in each of his last 11 matches for both club and country. However, he was unable to extend this feat in the win over Juventus on Wednesday night.

Mbappe is currently the top goalscorer in the La Liga with 10 goals. He is also the joint-top scorer in the Champions League alongside Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane with five goals each.

    Vinicius Junior

Vinicius is another player Barcelona will be wary of in this El Clasico with his explosive pace, exceptional dribbling with his quick feet and agility, and improved finishing.

Despite nowhere near his best, the 25-year-old Brazilian has managed to score six goals and provide as many assists for los Blancos.

    Barcelona

    Lamine Yamal

Yamal is undoubtedly Barca’s golden boy, who is likely going to pose all sorts of troubles for Madrid’s defence. Despite having injury troubles which has limited him to just seven matches, the teenage sensation still has eight goal contributions (three goals and five assists).

An inverted right-footed winger who cuts inside, combined with exceptional dribbling, close ball control, and a mature playmaking ability, the 18-year-old has all the attributes to unlock Madrid and hand them their second loss of the term.

    Marcus Rashford

Rashford is arguably Barca’s best player so far this campaign. The Manchester United loanee seems to have rejuvenated his career in Spain as his five goals and six assists including a brace against Olympiacos on Tuesday point to this direction.

The 27-year-old, who is in a rich vein of form, has the speed, versatility, dribbling and incredible finishing ability to hurt the league leaders.

    Team News

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid are set to be without Rudiger  in this El Clasico as he remains sidelined due a muscular issue he sustained during the international break in September.

Alaba was substituted out of last weekend’s match against Getafe owing to a calf injury. The Austrian will not be available in El Clasico.

Dani Ceballos and Dean Huijsen are both expected to return to the team after missing out in the victory over Juve.

Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also expected to make a return to the team after being on the sidelines for quite a number of games.

    Barcelona

Raphinha is anticipated for a return this El Clasico even as his hamstring injury has taken longer than expected.

Olmo will not return to action until at least the beginning of November after suffering a calf injury earlier this month while playing for Spain on international duty.

Goalkeeping duo, Marc Andre ter Stegen and Joan Garcia are out of this fixture due to injury leaving Wojciech Szczęsny as the man in between the sticks for Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski and Gavi are long term absentees therefore won’t be available for selection.

    Starting Line-ups

Real MadridCourtois, Valverde, Militao, Huijsen, Carreras, Tchouameni, Arda, Camavinga, Bellingham, Vinicius Jr, Mbappe.

    Barcelona

Szczesny, Kounde, Cubarsi, Garcia, Balde, De Jong, Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Fermin, Rashford, Ferran.

Talbi scores late winner as Sunderland stun Chelsea

Sunderland moved into second place in the Premier League as winger Chemsdine Talbi scored a 94th-minute winner to stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Regis le Bris’ side were on the brink of earning a valuable point in west London, but snatched all three when Talbi converted from the edge of the box after a quick counter-attack.

The victory – Sunderland’s second on the road this season – was all the more remarkable given Chelsea had taken an early lead when Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal for the club with a fine solo effort.

Sunderland levelled through Wilson Isidor, who netted from close range for his fourth goal of the season following Chelsea’s failure to clear their lines from a long throw.

The Black Cats were less adventurous in the second half, seemingly content to settle for a point against the Club World Cup champions.

But the home side struggled to create clear-cut chances and over-committed numbers in the search of a winner.

Sunderland expertly exploited the space left in Chelsea’s half as substitute Brian Brobbey latched on to a long ball, held up possession, and laid off for Talbi to score a famous winner.

The win means the Black Cats move into second place, two points behind leaders Arsenal, having played a game more than the Gunners.

Chelsea, who would have gone second with a victory of their own, slipped to seventh behind London rivals Tottenham.
