Gold Cup: Sporting Lagos pip Lobi Stars to seal final tie with Ebedei

Sporting Lagos are through to the final of the 13th Gold Cup pre-season tournament after a close 1-0 victory over former champions, Lobi Stars of Makurdi and will face FC Ebedei on Saturday in the grand finale.

The star semi-final game was a true test of tactical maturity and attacking depth, as both teams fought hard to get the opening goal.

It was a goalless first 45 minutes, with no clear-cut chance at scoring, but the play was an entertaining one, as they kept fans spellbound.

The second half was as entertaining as the first, but the tactical genius of Coach Jeffrey Buter was the tonic for Sporting Lagos.

The introduction of the duo of Shola Oladunjoye and Ibrahim Abdulganniyu in the 70th  minute was the game-changer for Sporting Lagos, as they increased the intensity of the game with their high pressing.

No sooner had Shola Oladunjoiye come in, the first real chance for Sporting Lagos came. Abdulganniyu dazzled into the Lobi Stars box to set up an inviting assist for Oladunjoye to slice into the net for the only goal.

The win ensured Sporting Lagos their first final, and will now slug it out with Ebedei FC who eliminated Crown FC 4-2 on penalties after a goalless full time.

CAF Snubs Nigerian arbiters for AFCON 2025

Nigeria’s referees have once again been left out as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the official list of match officials invited for the AFCON 2025 preparatory training camp in Egypt.

CAF unveiled the list yesterday, naming 33 referees, 36 assistant referees, and 11 video assistant referees (VARs) for the intensive program scheduled to hold in Cairo this December.

Conspicuously, no Nigerian referee or assistant referee made the cut, a development that has raised eyebrows among football stakeholders given the country’s long-standing record of producing reputable match officials for continental and international assignments.

The training camp serves as part of CAF’s preparations to ensure top officiating standards ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

  • Liverpool held meeting after Man Utd loss – Van Dijk

Liverpool held meeting after Man Utd loss – Van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says he called a players’ meeting following their defeat by Manchester United on Sunday – but insisted it was not a “crisis” summit.

Sunday’s 2-1 loss to United at Anfield was Liverpool’s fourth straight defeat.

It left the Reds joint third in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal.

While Van Dijk acknowledged the mood was “low” at the club’s Kirkby training ground on Monday, he said it was an opportunity for the squad to get together to speak openly about their recent form.

“On Monday, everyone was sad because we lost to United at home. We haven’t lost many games at home during my time at Liverpool,” Van Dijk told reporters.

“It was tough under the circumstances so on Monday we came together, but it wasn’t a crisis meeting. We all know how things can change. We’re only in October.

“Obviously, we also had a proper debrief with the manager but we also had a separate one as players. I wanted to say some things. It’s not something I do after every game. Let’s keep it that way.”

Liverpool ended their losing run on Wednesday with an emphatic 5-1 win at German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah was dropped from Arne Slot’s starting line-up, as Hugo Ekitike, Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo scored in Liverpool’s first victory in a month.

“The only way to get out of a situation like that is to stay together, keep your mind on the task ahead, try to improve, keep the confidence, embrace the moment. They are all things that are easier to say than actually do. But if you want to get out of it, you have to do it,” said Van Dijk, speaking after the win in Germany.

“We live in a world now where there is always noise, always something to be said, always someone who knows better. We have to stay focused on ourselves.

“Before my meeting, yes (the mood was low) but after my meeting, everyone was happy!”

Liverpool’s victory was marred by injuries to defender Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak.

Netherlands international Frimpong was substituted in the first half with a hamstring problem, while Isak was removed at half-time with a groin strain.

The Reds’ next Premier League game is at Brentford on Saturday at 20:00 BST.

Unwanted anger may  derail Nwabali’s career, says Muisi Ajao

    From Mark Ogagan in Johannesburg

South Africa-based Mamelodi Sundowns legend and Nigeria ex-international, Muisi Ajao says anger could truncate Stanley Nwabali’s career if not controlled.

“I am astonished about his recent behaviour. He seems to have suffered a slump in form, and his anger issues are not helping. That could affect his relationship with teammates and the technical crew and that’s not healthy for him.

“He needs to work harder on his ball handling and reflexes and forget about those unnecessary antics,” said Ajao.

Nwabali has recently come under flak for a series of on-field incidents that left fans questioning his form and composure.

Since breaking into the Super Eagles pre-AFCON 2024, he has won the hearts of passionate football fans, particularly after helping Nigeria to the final of the continental showpiece, but his recent antics in the build up to the final round of World Cup qualifiers has left fans in fits of rage.

After posting a below-average performance that could have gifted Lesotho a late equalizer in Polokwane, he was involved in flash incidents with his own teammates during the decisive Group C qualifier against Benin in Uyo. Wilfred Ndidi tried to calm him down after he confronted a Benin player, but he pushed the captain away. At half-time, he was seen arguing with Calvin Bassey.

Some say these are traits of arrogance, some say he’s disrespectful to teammates, while some say he needs anger management. These issues (and more), have prompted irritated Nigerian fans to demand an urgent replacement for the Chippa United goalkeeper.

  • Ex-Delta Speaker  Ochei endorsed  for NTF Presidency

Ex-Delta Speaker  Ochei endorsed  for NTF Presidency

    By Daniel Oyekan

Stakeholders in Nigerian tennis have welcomed the decision of former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, to contest for the position of President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), describing it as a “step in the right direction” for the sport’s revival.

Ochei, who was recently nominated by the National Sports Commission (NSC) as the Sponsorship/Philanthropy representative on the board of the federation, has reportedly yielded to pressure from stakeholders and enthusiasts to run for the top seat in the forthcoming NTF elections slated for Saturday in Abuja.

The NSC has consistently emphasized its goal of “returning Nigeria to its glorious days in global sports,” maintaining that only individuals of proven integrity and capacity would be endorsed to lead national sports federations. Officials at the Commission are said to be engaging personalities who have made visible contributions to sports growth in the country to ensure that the next phase of leadership brings sustainable impact.

According to reports, Ochei a businessman and long-time tennis patron fits this profile perfectly. For more than half a decade, he has invested over ₦200 million in sponsoring the annual Davnotch Open Tennis Championship, one of the most consistent tournaments on the local tennis calendar.

Speaking on the stakeholders’ choice, Caleb Tsav, one of the leading voices within the tennis community, said the group’s support for Ochei stemmed from his track record of consistent investment and genuine passion for the sport.

“It’s time we got it right with tennis. We have resolved to follow this process from nomination to election to avoid the mistakes of the past,” Tsav said. “The question we’re asking every contestant is simple — what have you done for tennis to qualify you for leadership on the board? Ochei has answered that with his actions.”

He further described Ochei as a “sports philanthropist with an unshakable affinity for tennis,” noting that his passion extends beyond the court.

“He’s an Audemars Piguet Ambassador who has attended all four global tennis Grand Slams for over a decade,” Tsav added. “He’s also sponsored the Onicha-Olona Unity Cup for five years and constructed the Donald Ochei Mini-Stadium in his hometown, Onicha-Olona, in Delta State  a feat that deserves emulation.”

Beyond Ochei’s individual aspiration, stakeholders are also advocating for the inclusion of former Nigerian tennis icons Nduka Odizor, David Imonitie, and Sadiq Abdullahi on the federation’s board. The move, they believe, will help blend experience, vision, and technical depth in steering Nigerian tennis toward international relevance.

For many within the sport, Ochei’s emergence offers a new sense of hope after years of stagnation. His deep involvement in both grassroots and professional tennis, stakeholders argue, positions him as a figure capable of bridging administrative experience with passion-driven sports development.

Tsav concluded by emphasizing that leadership in sports federations must prioritize both competence and genuine commitment.

“We must elect those who understand the game, have affinity for it, and can attract sponsorship. These are the catalysts that will take Nigerian sports back to its global prominence,” he said.

With the NTF elections fast approaching, the spotlight now turns to Abuja, where tennis enthusiasts await a decision that could redefine the sport’s direction in Nigeria and possibly restore its long-lost glory.

  • Ohanaeze redeems 48-year-old   FG’s pledge to Enugu Rangers

Ohanaeze redeems 48-year-old   FG’s pledge to Enugu Rangers

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has redeemed a 48-year-old shortfall in the monetary reward given to players of Rangers International Football Club of Enugu by the Federal Government of Nigeria after their historic victory in the African Winners’ Cup in 1977.

When Rangers lifted the continental trophy that year, the Federal Government rewarded the team with ₦25,000, a figure significantly lower than the ₦50,000 given to ICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan for winning the same competition in 1976.

The disparity sparked outrage among Ndigbo, who felt the gesture reflected an undervaluation of the club’s achievement—especially given Rangers’ role in rekindling Igbo pride and unity after the Nigeria–Biafra war.

Despite years of agitation, the matter was never addressed by the government.

48 years  later,  the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has now stepped in to “redeem” the pledge by awarding ₦1 million each to the surviving players and families of the late footballers who made up the 1977 Rangers squad.

At a brief ceremony held on Wednesday at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Secretariat, Enugu, several ex-Rangers stars, including former goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala and former team captain Dominic Nwobodo, confirmed receiving the payment.

Families of deceased players such as legendary coach Christian Chukwu were represented by their spouses, children, and relatives.

Speaking during the event, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta Mbata, said the gesture was a symbolic reminder that the Igbo nation never forgets those who brought pride and honor to their people.

“This is a typical Nigerian situation. The Federal Government made a pledge in 1977 but it is Ohanaeze Ndigbo that is redeeming it today,” Mbata said. “It shows that matters concerning the Igbo rarely get attention in Nigeria. But one who is rejected does not reject himself.”

He recalled the immense role Rangers International played in restoring Igbo confidence after the civil war.

“At the lowest ebb of our history, when the Igbo were defeated and humiliated, Rangers rose as a beacon of light, strength, and hope. They reminded our people that we could rise again,” he said.

“Since the government failed to honour them, the Igbo people, through Ohanaeze, have decided to do so. Let the world know that we will never forget Rangers. Whether dead or alive, we will continue to honour their memory. The labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain.”

In his remarks, veteran goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a dream come true.

“It’s a great thing that I’m alive to witness this fulfilment,” Okala said. “Many of our teammates are no more, but this shows they have not been forgotten. We will use this support to take care of our health and remember our departed colleagues like Coach Christian Chukwu, who would have been proud to see this day.”

Morocco 2025 : Flamingos’ World Cup hope dimmed after narrow  loss lo France

The hopes of Nigeria’s U17 girls, Flamingos, advancing to the knockout stages of the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco became slim on Wednesday night, following the team’s 0-1 reverse against France – its second loss in as many games.

Both teams played conservatively and created few chances in the first 45 minutes, defending robustly, with Nigeria making four attempts at goal, more than the French side who had three of their shots wide off the target.

Nigeria’s clear chance came from Chisom Nwachukwu’s delightful set-piece, but France’s goalkeeper, Chevray Lauryne was right on the spot to tip it over the bar for a corner kick.

The Flamingos’ best chance came in the 50th minute of the game when Queen Joseph’s delivery from a corner kick fell unto the path of Nwachukwu whose close range left-footed shot was once again foiled by goalkeeper Chevray Lauryne.

Substitute Laboucarie Luna nearly put France in front in the 62nd minute after Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Elizabeth Boniface’s attempt to close down an attacker bearing on goal failed, but Jumai Adebayo’s goal-line clearance kept Nigeria on in the game.

France found the breakthrough late on as Maissa Fathallah’s low strike beat Boniface in the 81st minute for the only goal of the match.

The defeat leaves Nigeria with zero points from two games. The team will play Samoa Island in the last group game of the campaign.
