Electoral Process: Lagos SWAN urges apex body to insists on statutory provisions

Members of the Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have reaffirmed their support for the Isaiah Benjamin–led National Executive, urging strict adherence to the association’s statutes in the conduct of the 2025 Lagos SWAN elections.

The members accused the current Lagos SWAN Executive Committee, led by Oladunni Olatutu, of convening a “kangaroo congress” and setting up a three-man state electoral committee in clear contravention of the association’s constitution—specifically Article 12, Section G (sub-sections ii, iii, iv) and Article 12, Section I (sub-section ii).

According to them, the Olatutu-led executive usurped the powers of the Lagos SWAN congress by imposing a SWANECO team on the chapter, despite provisions that vest absolute authority on the congress, with the National Executive holding the mandate to ratify such appointments while working with SWANECO on electoral guidelines and timetable.

The members further condemned acts of intimidation orchestrated by the Lagos state executive in connivance with the Lagos State Police Command. They recalled that no fewer than 15 police vehicles and over 40 officers from different divisions were deployed to the venue at the last congress to create an atmosphere of fear and raising concerns within the stadium community.

While thanking the National SWAN for intervening to ensure that a proper congress was eventually convened, the members expressed concern over attempts by some initial SWANECO members imposed on Lagos SWAN, Victor Eyinnaya, Jerry Apeleokhai, and Joshua Uloko to frustrate other committee members from contributing positively to the electoral process.

They described their rigidity as a deliberate ploy that has stifled progress and undermined the purpose of expanding SWANECO into a full committee, as approved at the only congress recognised by the National SWAN in a letter dated 29 September.

A major grievance raised was the unrealistic pricing of nomination forms, which they described as a calculated move to turn the electoral process into a contest for moneybags, effectively disenfranchising genuine members. Despite repeated calls for a reduction in fees which pegged prices of nomination form for Chairmanship position at ₦200,000; Vice Chairman at ₦120,000; Secretary  at ₦120,000; Assistant Secretary at ₦100,000; Treasurer at ₦100,000; Financial Secretary at ₦100,000; and Welfare Officer at ₦100,000, the three-man bloc within SWANECO stood firm on their pricing structure. They justified the decision by claiming committee members were entitled to 50% of all monies realised.

This stance not only places an unfair burden on members but also raises serious ethical concerns, undermining the principles of service, transparency, and fairness expected of an electoral body. These concerns were highlighted in a protest letter earlier written to National SWAN by two other SWANECO members, McAnthony Anaelechukwu and Anulika Menanya.

The members insisted that the Lagos SWANECO, in its current form and mode of operation, is not serving the interest of fairness or inclusivity, but rather pursuing a narrow agenda that undermines the integrity of SWAN in Lagos.

They therefore called on the National Executive to urgently intervene, investigate these practices, and take corrective measures to restore credibility and fairness to the electoral process in Lagos State.

UEL: Berke Ozer saves three spot-kicks to seal Lille’s win over Roma

Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer delivered a stunning performance in the closing stages of their Europa League clash against Roma, saving three consecutive penalties to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory for the French side.

The match began with an early goal from Hakon Arnar Haraldsson, who capitalized on a defensive error to score in the 6th minute. Despite Roma pressing for an equaliser, they were continually frustrated by Lille’s defense.

Their best chance came in the 80th minute when Aissa Mandi was penalised for a handball inside the box. Substitute Artem Dovbyk stepped up for the home side but his penalty was saved by Ozer. However, the referee, Erik Lambrechts, ruled the save out as Ozer was judged to have moved off his line, prompting a retake.

Dovbyk tried again, and once more, Ozer denied him. But for the second time, the Lille keeper was penalised for moving too early, giving Roma yet another chance from the spot.

Matias Soule took the third penalty, but Ozer stood tall yet again, producing a third stunning save — this time, a legal one — to preserve Lille’s lead and seal a memorable win.

Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini said afterwards: “I’ve never seen three missed penalties in one match. It was an almost unique, random situation, which ultimately compromised the result.”

At The Platform, Odegbami hails  Tinubu’s huge  support for  Sports

    By Daniel Oyekan

Erstwhile Green  Eagles captain and respected sports administrator, Segun Odegbami, has praised President Bola Ahmed  Tinubu  on his commitment to sports development, describing his administration as the most supportive of Nigerian sports since 1979.

Fielding questions at The Platform Lagos, a thought-leadership forum themed “Rebuilding Our Nation” , Odegbami stressed that sports hold a “spiritual power that can unify the country, transform lives, and cut across every sector of development.”

He  said  the country’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is in  the right direction, adding  sports  have become a good tool  in reshaping  the society as evidenced in many climes.

He said matter-of-factly: “With the preparations taking seven years and what it impacts cutting across the whole spectrum of life, we need to take sport more seriously.

“The power in it is almost spiritual. When a goal is scored, it’s just a goal, but the whole country celebrates as if it’s a victory for everyone. That is power we must convert into something positive.”

The 1980 AFCON winner described sport as more than just entertainment, noting its influence on health, agriculture, engineering, law, and the media. He, however, lamented that Nigeria has continued to underutilize this vast potential.

Dwelling further  on the  bid for the Centenary Commonwealth Games, Odegbami acknowledged past failures such as the “reckless spending”  on the  2003 African  Games, but expressed optimism under the current administration.

“I have seen that President Tinubu has injected more money than any other president since 1979 into sports,” he said. “He has brought in two young people(leadership of the National Sports Commission in Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade), with a vision we can identify with. If they put in place a proper board with respected Nigerians, there is a very good possibility that the Commonwealth Games could open up opportunities such as we never had before.”

Beyond sports development, Odegbami also reflected on Nigeria’s broader potential, urging citizens to believe in the country’s ability to lead Africa and the world.

“Nigeria could be the greatest country in the world,” he declared. “The evidence is all around us. Afro musicians are dominating the world, and the future belongs to Africa. We must believe it can be done.”

As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, the ex-international also called on Nigerians to rally behind the Super Eagles ahead of their World Cup qualifiers.

“It is unthinkable that in the past two years we have produced the two greatest players in Africa, yet we cannot qualify for the World Cup. Let’s support the Super Eagles. Let’s believe in them,” noted  Odegbami who earned the nickname  ‘Mathematical’  for his precision in front of  the goal post and brilliant style of play.

Huge moment scoring against Liverpool, says Osimhen

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen  has described  as “huge moment” his penalty goal in Tuesday’s  victory over  Liverpool in a UEFA  Champions League match in Istanbul.

The former African Footballer of  the  Year made all the difference  with the solitary  winner   after he struck from the spot in the 16th minute   against  the experienced  Brazilian   goalkeeper Allison Becker and he acknowledged  that playing against  the English champions was indeed a huge motivation for the Red & Gold.

“I’m extremely happy about the performance we put in against one of the greatest clubs in the world,” Osimhen told CBS Sports as per  Liverpool FC News. “For us, we never get carried away because this is a true test that Liverpool gave to us. I’m really happy about this win.

“It won’t take away that they are one of the best [teams] in the last decade. For us, it’s a really big motivation for us.

“They made us even better and we know we have a lot of things to work on. I’m really happy for this win and the team.”

“You come face-to-face with one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Alisson,” he said. “I have to be on high concentration for the place where I want to put the ball and I didn’t change it.

“For me, it’s a huge moment. I came against him when I played for my previous club and he heard my penalty so I needed to be highly concentrated to do better.”

He added: “We have quality in our team and we just need to be focused in many games in this competition. This is a huge step for us and we won’t be carried away because we beat Liverpool. It’s a big motivation.”

  • Independence Day Golf Kitty: Adeleke, Oyinlola, Badmus wants more private involvement  in sports

Independence Day Golf Kitty: Adeleke, Oyinlola, Badmus wants more private involvement  in sports

The founder of Ile-Ogbo Golf Course, Engr. Olanrewaju Abel Adeleke, his wife, Barrister Udochukwu Adeleke, former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Khamis Tunde Badmus have called for private sector participation in sports promotion and development in the country.

The concerned veteran golfers made the call at the “Independence Golf Kitty 2025” organized and sponsored by the management of LanreLeke Sports Academy, Ile-Ogbo, Ayedire Local Government Area, Osun State.

Speaking during the event, Engr. Adeleke advocated improved participation in sports by more Nigerians to complement government efforts saying “for Nigeria to compete effectively globally, all hands must be on deck to support government at all levels.”

“Today is Independence Day and for us here at LanreLeke Sports Academy, we celebrate the day with an annual golf kitty. We have competitions here to bring out the best from our people, both the professionals and the amateurs. We also have the kitty refresher course for golfers to encourage bonding among golfers.

“To advance sports in the country, there is a need for more  private sector participation in addition to government intervention . LanreLeke Sports Academy  has young Nigerians in SS1 to SS3 taking courses in different sports like athletics, football, basketball, handball, Volleyball, among others.

“We started with 20 members  but today we have 105. The Academy is run by membership subscription and sponsorship.

“We have seasoned personnel trained within and outside this country managing this course and whatever challenges we have encountered we have been able to tackle frontally with the experienced management in place.

“While it is incumbent on the government to create enabling environment, it is private sector participation that will create more opportunities in sports. “, Adeleke advocated.

Former Governor of Osun State,  Prince Oyinlola applauded the management of LanreLeke Sports Academy for their consistency and commitment to promoting sports in the country.

Oyinlola said: “the reason for being part of this event is to identify with the efforts of Engr Adeleke in the promotion of sports in Osun and Nigeria especially the game of golf. As an individual, the establishment of an academy here where the old are being taught and young ones are learning, there is no magic to producing world stars if not through this kind of effort.

“We want to bring awareness to every Nigerian that there is a part to play in the promotion of sports in the country. No magic-wand will produce world stars but where there are facilities of this nature to groom our budding talents to represent us at world events so as to bring honour to our country. There is no magic to achieving success in sports other than what this academy is doing. Today we have Sunday Olapade who is a renowned golfer in the world and first in Africa. If not what the likes of Chief Tunde Ponle and Adeleke are doing, no one knows that a world class sportsman can come from there.”

“We always have a golf tournament on a significant day like this where we have champions all over the country come for the tournament. Apart from the golf course we also have educational facilities here, we have a world class secondary school. As you can see, indigent students are here. Many of them are on scholarship and it is our own way of giving back to humanity. We have realized that people depend so much on government that is why we have been doing this to give back to the society. We have a Non-Governmental Organization to support health sector too”, she stated.

24th FIFA U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles go for broke  against Saudi Arabia

The Flying Eagles will be aiming for victory against Saudi Arabia on Matchday 2 in the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile, after a painful loss to Norway in their first group game on Monday.

Despite dominating the game and creating a number of opportunities, the seven-time African champions were unlucky not to have equalized in the second half of the encounter, and probably taken the three points. On two occasions, their appeals for penalty awards were turned down by the referee.

Head Coach Aliyu Zubair is upbeat his wards have shaken off the defeat against Norway as their attention has shifted towards the confrontation with Saudi Arabia, to ensure the team gets the desired result. With the availability of all key players, Coach Zubair may stick to his usual 4-3-3 formation with more focus on attack and ball possession.

Israel Ayuma, Daniel Daga and Charles Agada have all been booked and will have to play with caution to avoid missing the last group game against the Colombians.

Chile 2025: Amadi, Enegwea rally Flying Eagles for  Saudi Arabia

Heartland goalkeepers’ trainer, Emeka Amadi, has urged Nigeria’s Flying Eagles to believe in themselves when they face Saudi Arabia in the early hours of Friday (Nigerian time) at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Amadi, who was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the Saudi ’89 U-20 World Cup where the Flying Eagles reached the final before losing 2-0 to Portugal, told NationSport exclusively that the current team must not dwell on their opening-day defeat to Norway.

Reflecting on the loss, Amadi noted: “It was just hard luck against Norway. No matter how good you are, if you are not lucky, you will not make it. Norway scored through a penalty but ours was not approved by the VAR. We hit the bar twice and also missed some scoring chances.

“I believe they will come all out in the next game against Saudi Arabia because they know what is at stake and that Nigerians would be glad to see them qualify from the group. I would like to admonish the Flying Eagles to play total football and, above all, they must believe in themselves. They should not underrate their opponents.”

Also speaking, Heartland  Assistant Coach, Taiwo Enegwea, who was part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets squad that lost to the Soviet Union in the final of Canada ’87 and later featured at Saudi ’89 with Amadi, called on the Flying Eagles to show resilience in their remaining group games.

Enegwea stressed that the defeat to Norway should serve as a wake-up call: “They must strive to win their next two games to qualify. If I recall vividly, Argentina, who won the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar, lost their opening game to Saudi Arabia. So, their loss to Norway should not be a yardstick to feel they won’t make it to the next round. The defeat is just an eye opener for them to know they must work harder in the next game.

They actually played very well but lost scoring chances. The coach should work on their area of deficiencies in the last game.”

Enegwea, recalling his own international experience, emphasized the competitive spirit that shaped his generation:

“I had a very good experience playing for Nigeria because we had a lot of competition during our era. Merit was the order of the day in team selection. From Canada ’87 to Saudi ’89, we played with determination, and that is the same mentality the current Flying Eagles must embrace.”

The Flying Eagles will face Saudi Arabia in the wee hours of Friday in the second game of the group stage hoping to secure their first win of the competition and boost their qualification chances.

Gritty  Rivers Hoopers sink Comets despite shaky start

Rivers Hoopers showed grit and composure to defeat Ebun Comets 65-49 and take a third win from as many games at the ongoing Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL) Phase Two.

After a slow start, the defending champions picked up the pace to lead by five points at the end of the first quarter with the score at 19-14.

However, the second quarter was one to forget, as the KingsMen could only manage nine (9) points (their lowest tally for an entire quarter), and Comets scored double the points with eighteen (18). This meant the hosts would trail at halftime for the first time this season, as the score was 32-28 in favour of Comets.

Speaking during his post-game interview, Rivers Hoopers Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu admitted to his team’s slow start.

“I think we started badly. I noticed before jump ball [that] the body attitude was not convincing; there was no energy at all. Everything was flat. That was why we struggled, and that’s something I have to work on.”

The KingsMen returned from the halftime break eager to prove a point and quickly regained the lead, with vice-captain Buchi Nwaiwu firing from deep for a three-point lead which the defending champions maintained as the score stood at 46-43 entering the fourth.

Rivers Hoopers closed out the game with a nearly flawless performance in the fourth, which pleased Odaudu, as they notched up nineteen (19) points while limiting Comets to a meagre six (6) points the entire quarter to wrap up the encounter 65-49.

“Basketball is about stopping your opponent from scoring, not how many baskets you make.” I emphasised a lot about the defence, and they came, and they did it perfectly,” he said.

Up next for the KingsMen is a date with Lagos Legends, who are also unbeaten through the Phase Two games played so far, and with both teams already assured of their spots in the Playoffs Phase of the league (last eight), Odaudu said it will be a clash of egos, but one which he will treat like any other game.

“It will be treated just like any other game.” We’re going to do the same thing we always do, nothing different. It’s going to be a very intense game tomorrow because nobody wants to be beaten. It’s an ego battle right now, [and] we don’t want to disappoint our fans here at home. So we’re going to come all out and hopefully take the win,” he stated.

The game between Rivers Hoopers and Lagos Legends will take place by 5pm on Thursday, at the Indoor Basketball Court, 59 Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township.
