Kwara United gear up for NPFL, President Federation Cup after continental exit

Kwara United have promised to bounce back stronger after their elimination in the preliminary stage of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Nigerian club slumped 0-1 at home to Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko on Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun State to bow out on a 3-5 aggregate scoreline.

While apologising to their teeming supporters, fans, and other critical stakeholders for the continental ouster, the Harmony Boys pleaded for understanding as they plot their way back to reckoning.

Kwara needed an outright win to secure a place in the next round, but a lone strike by Hubert Gyalu in the 53rd minute sealed a 1-0 victory for the Porcupine Warriors in the return leg played at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

In a statement yesterday , Kwara chairman, Kumbi Titiloye, described the early exit as painful and regrettable, pleading with fans to forgive the team for they are determined to bounce back stronger.

Kwara United will now focus solely on the ongoing Nigeria top-flight for a chance to return to the continent with a home tie against Plateau United on Thursday.

  • Mangut  cautious despite Nasarawa United’s impressive start

Mangut  cautious despite Nasarawa United’s impressive start

Head coach of Nasarawa United,  Mangut Mbwas has played down suggestions that his side are favourites for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, insisting it is too early to celebrate despite their current lead on the log.

The Solid Miners climbed to the summit of the table on Sunday after a convincing 2-0 win over Katsina United at the Lafia City Stadium on Matchday Six.

The result marked their third straight home victory, taking their tally to 13 points from six matches with four wins, one draw, and one loss.

Speaking after the game, Mangut praised his players’ response but warned against complacency.

“It’s a thing of joy to win today. Our response was great because we have been working so hard, and gradually we are achieving our goals,” he said.

“But it is not time for celebration yet. The league is a marathon and still very much in its infancy.”

On the match itself, Mangut acknowledged that his side could have scored more than the two goals they managed.

“Katsina United are a tricky side; they don’t allow you to play freely. The first-half goal gave us the advantage, and we added the second, though we wasted a lot of chances,” he admitted. “My players were a bit anxious in front of goal, but we’re working on correcting that.”

Looking ahead, the coach maintained confidence in his squad’s growing momentum.

“Our next game won’t be easy, but the team is growing in confidence, game after game. I believe we can win anywhere,” he added.

  • Gift Monday  shifts attention to Champions Cup after NWSL  hat-trick heroics

Gift Monday  shifts attention to Champions Cup after NWSL  hat-trick heroics

Super Falcons attacker, Gift Monday says her attention has shifted from her heroic of last weekend and now fully focused on Washington Spirits continental action against Gotham FC in the Concacaf Women’s Champions Cup tomorrow.

Monday also revealed that they also have San Diego Wave to slug it out this weekend in the league and cannot continue to dwell on her hat-trick of the past weekend.

The former FC Robo Queens striker  etched her name into the history books on Sunday, scoring the fastest hat-trick from the start of a match in NWSL history to inspire Washington Spirit’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Houston Dash and book their place in the playoffs.

The 23-year-old forward struck three times inside the opening 36 minutes, underlining her reputation as one of the league’s most lethal finishers. She opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a calm finish past Abby Smith, doubled her tally three minutes later by pouncing on a rebound, and completed her treble with a deft strike from a Trinity Rodman assist.

Each goal was marked with Monday’s trademark bow-and-arrow celebration and dance routine, a gesture she explained carries a personal meaning.

“Growing up, I didn’t have people who really believed in my potential,” Monday said. “Each time I score, I shoot the arrow because I see myself more than how people see me — right there up in the sky among the stars.

“I can’t continue dwelling on the goals I scored though I am thrilled about it. I am now more concerned about our upcoming games in the Champions Cup and the league.”

Her historic feat, assisted by U.S. internationals Rodman (two) and Croix Bethune (one), makes her only the second Spirit player after Crystal Dunn in 2015 to record a first-half hat-trick.

Signed earlier this year from UD Granadilla Tenerife in Spain, Monday has now netted eight goals in 19 appearances, keeping her firmly in the Golden Boot race alongside Orlando’s Barbra Banda and Chicago’s Ludmila.

The Spirit’s triumph was not only historic for Monday but also for the club, delivering their biggest-ever winning margin and stretching their unbeaten streak to 10 games — a new record.

  • CAF Champions League: Finidi set sights with Rivers United  on Black Bulls

CAF Champions League: Finidi set sights with Rivers United  on Black Bulls

Coach Finidi George has acknowledged that Rivers United must perform better than they did against Aigles du Congo of DR Congo if they are to progress to the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

Rivers United advanced to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after securing a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory over Aigles du Congo in Port Harcourt on Sunday and will face Black Bulls of Mozambique next month.

Finidi expressed satisfaction with the hard-fought win, noting that his side dug  deep to progress despite missed opportunities.

“We are quite happy with the victory. It was not an easy one but any day, anytime, I will take the 1-0 win because we are now through to the next round,” Finidi said after the game. “In the first half, we had a chance that should have been converted to calm the nerves, but it didn’t happen. We saw lapses and mistakes because the players were a little nervous. We spoke at halftime and the response was better, though we still couldn’t take our chances. Towards the end, our opponents tried to shock us, but we managed the game well.

“It was not our usual style because we have a lot of new players. They will improve with time. I am happy we qualified, and the players know they must give everything to overcome our next opponents.”

Also Speaking on the game, team captain Temple Emekayi also reflected on the tactical approach of the Congolese side, noting that Rivers United had to adapt as the game progressed.

“The opponents came with a clear game plan. They wanted to sit back and catch us on the counter. They kept to this until the goal came. In the second half, they threw everything forward knowing it was their last chance. With the pressure, we had to drop deep and defend our lead,” Emekayi explained.

With the win, Rivers United will now shift focus to their second-round clash against Black Bulls of Mozambique, a fixture Finidi insists will require total commitment from his squad as they continue their quest for a group stage spot.

  • Mourinho  expects fans’ respect as Benfica battle Chelsea in London

Mourinho  expects fans’ respect as Benfica battle Chelsea in London

Jose Mourinho insists he will receive a warm welcome from the Chelsea fans who once turned on him when the former Blues boss returns to Stamford Bridge with Benfica tonight.

Mourinho is back in west London for a Champions League group stage clash that has turned into a trip down memory lane.

The 62-year-old, who famously announced his arrival in the Premier League by labelling himself a ‘special one’, led Chelsea to three English titles, three League Cups and one FA Cup across two spells that etched him in the club’s history forever.

Fuelled by the financial backing of then owner Roman Abramovich, Mourinho turned Chelsea from underachievers to serial winners.

But those triumphs did not stop Chelsea fans chanting “you’re not special anymore” at Mourinho and jeering him when he returned as manager of Manchester United and then Tottenham.

Now in charge of Benfica after his recent sacking by Turkish club Fenerbahce, Mourinho started his pre-match press conference at Stamford Bridge by claiming he was “not a blue anymore”.

But aware that he risked more abuse from the stands on Tuesday, Mourinho quickly backtracked, saying he still loved the club and expected to be treated with affection by the fans that used to idolise him.

“Of course I will always be a Blue. I am part of their history and they are part of mine. I helped them become a bigger Chelsea and they helped me become a bigger Jose,” he told reporters.

“It was a happy marriage. It was a fantastic decision I made. The reason I came the second time is of course I was so happy the first time.

“When I say I am not a blue I am talking about the job I have to do tomorrow.

“I don’t think Chelsea fans will boo. At least on the street Chelsea fans are the ones that disturb me for autographs and pictures.”

Photos of Mourinho celebrating some of his greatest Chelsea moments were hung on the walls of the Ted Drake Suite to make the Portuguese coach feel at home.

It was a gesture that did not go unnoticed by Mourinho, who said: “There are not many clubs that do this. In many clubs it looks like there is a fear of what happened in the past.

“Sometimes it looks like they want to delete people who made history. It shows Chelsea is really a big club.”

Mourinho, who still has a family home close to Stamford Bridge, opted against piling pressure on Chelsea’s current boss Enzo Maresca, who has come under fire after successive defeats against Manchester United and Brighton this season.

Maresca led Chelsea to Champions League qualification and won the UEFA Conference League last season.

“There was a sad period where even me from the outside, I was putting some question marks. It looked like Chelsea lost their identity but what happened in the last season has put things back on track,” he said.

But Mourinho couldn’t resist pointing out his own achievements with Chelsea whenever the opportunity arose.

Asked if he still ranked himself as the best manager in Chelsea’s history, Mourinho said: “I am the biggest one until someone wins four (titles).

“Chelsea won something before my time. Then they stopped winning, and then my team kept winning.”

And in typically waspish fashion, he played down the two trophies won by Maresca.

“The Conference League is an easy competition for a big club to win. I did it with Roma. Champions League is much more difficult to win than the Club World Cup but Chelsea has the potential of course,” he said.

It is a decade since he lifted a league title but even if Mourinho’s managerial star is on the wane, he remains a box-office attraction.

After answering the last question of the press conference, Mourinho made a point of embracing several familiar faces among the British media.

He even posed for a selfie before wrapping a long-serving member of Chelsea’s media team in a warm embrace.

“You know how I am. I love it,” he said with a smirk before leaving the stage.

  • Slot challenges Liverpool against  Osimhen’s Galatasaray

Slot challenges Liverpool against  Osimhen’s Galatasaray

Liverpool boss Arne Slot challenged his players to give their all when they take on Turkish champions Galatasaray in Istanbul on match day 2 of the Champions League tonight.

Liverpool edged Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a fiery Champions League opening day win in the 36-team league phase, but lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend.

The Premier League champions have overhauled the squad that cruised to the title last season and won their first five games with Slot’s new-look set-up.

The Dutch coach warned Galatasaray presented a major challenge, despite their opening day 5-1 drubbing at Eintracht Frankfurt.

“If you want to compete for trophies, let alone if you wear a Liverpool shirt, (you must) give everything you have, and combine that with the best football you can play,” Slot said.

“They are a very, very good team and have a very good manager,” Slot said at a Monday night press conference in Istanbul.

“The 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt was either the quality of Frankfurt, or a little bit of bad luck for Galatasaray,” he said.

“They know what it takes to win the league and know what it takes to win a game of football, so we have to be prepared for that,” said Slot.

Slot has the weapons to win the club’s seventh Champions League crown this season and one of those is assistant Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who coached Galatasaray’s rivals Besiktas in 2024.

“Gio is one of my assistant coaches so he is part of the set-up if we discuss or talk about the team we face, if that is Palace or Everton or Atletico Madrid or, in this situation, Galatasaray.”

“He has knowledge about Turkish football, he knows these players.”

Slot said that at this level set pieces were crucial.

“We knew Galatasaray were also strong on set-pieces, but I can tell you we won our last Champions League game because of a set-piece,” he said of Virgil Van Dijk’s late winner over Atletico.

Despite cruising to the Premier League title last season, the Reds invested nearly £450 million ($614 million) in transforming their squad during the summer transfer window.

Forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike were part of the recruitment but in their opener against Atletico it was old hand Mohamed Salah who delivered by scoring one and making another with a deflected free-kick.

LeBron relishing 23rd  season as retirement draws near

LeBron James said Monday he had not decided when to retire from basketball as he prepares to become the first player in NBA history to play a 23rd season in the league.

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar told reporters at a media day that he is “excited” by the prospect of another season in the league alongside Luka Doncic and a bolstered roster.

James will turn 41 in December and plans to savour every minute of the tail-end of a glittering career that has straddled three different decades.

But the four-time NBA champion and all-time points scorer says he has no idea of when he will retire.

“I’m excited about today, I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season,” James told reporters. “Whatever the journey lays out this year, I’m super-invested because I don’t know when the end is. It’s a lot sooner than later.

“I’m just super-appreciative of the fact that I come up here to do another media day and talk to you guys.”

James, who averaged 24.4 points per game last season, said his love for basketball – and hunger to keep improving – remained undimmed.

“The thing still pushing me is the fact that my love for the game is still high, and the love of the process is even higher,” he said.

“It’s that simple – me training and working my body and trying to get my body as close to 100% as possible every year, it’s a beautiful thing for me…The NBA season is a roller coaster. But no matter the good, the bad, ugly, I still love that process.

“For me personally, I love to play the game, I love to play at a high level. Age is kind of just a number. Not many guys at my age, especially going to year 23, is able to play a level like that. I try not to take it for granted.”

Last season, the Lakers sent shockwaves around the NBA after signing Luka Doncic in a stunning trade with the Dallas Mavericks.

James said the prospect of playing with the Slovenian star after a full training camp – instead of learning on the fly last year – was another motivating force for his 23rd season.

“The motivation to play alongside him every night, that’s super motivating,” James said. “That’s gonna train my body for every night I go out there and try to be the best player I can for him. We gonna bounce that off one another.”

In addition to a full training camp alongside Doncic, James is also relishing the prospect of starting the new season with a squad that has been bolstered by the arrival of veteran guard Marcus Smart and centre Deandre Ayton.

“I’m excited about getting to work, and I’m excited to see what we can do,” James said.

  • UCL: Things to know as Galatasaray take on Liverpool at RAMS Park

UCL: Things to know as Galatasaray take on Liverpool at RAMS Park

Turkish giants Galatasaray will welcome Premier League champions Liverpool to RAMS Park on Tuesday for what promises to be a thrilling UEFA Champions League clash.

The encounter is one of the standout fixtures of matchday two, with both sides aiming to make a strong statement in the group stage.

Galatasaray, the reigning Turkish Super Lig champions, are hoping to build on their impressive home record in Europe. Manager Okan Buruk will be banking on the support of the passionate Istanbul crowd to unsettle Liverpool and give his side an edge. The availability of star striker Victor Osimhen, who only recently returned from injury, remains a key talking point ahead of the game.

Liverpool, on the other hand, arrive as favorites but know they face a stern test in Turkey. The Reds boast one of the most formidable squads in the competition, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Núñez, and Dominik Szoboszlai providing attacking firepower. Manager Jürgen Klopp will also be wary of Galatasaray’s physicality and fast transitions, which could make the contest more unpredictable.

Below are somethings to keep yourself appraised on before the ecstatic encounter

Galatasaray and Liverpool will meet for a fifth time in European competition, with both sides managing one victory apiece across the previous four (D2). This will be their first game against each other since a 3-2 win for Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League in December 2006.

Liverpool are winless in their previous two away trips to face Galatasaray, 1-1 in February 2002 and losing 3-2 in December 2006. The only teams they’ve faced away from home more often in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League without winning are Chelsea (5 – D3 L2) and Napoli (3 – L3).

Galatasaray are unbeaten in their last three games against English opponents in European competition (W2 D1), with wins over Manchester United (3-2) and Tottenham (3-2) in the UEFA Europa League in the last two campaigns. This is as many victories as they managed in the previous 12 combined (W2 D5 L5).

Liverpool have won 13 of their last 14 matches in the group/league phase of the UEFA Champions League (L1), while the last team to keep a clean sheet against the Reds in a non-knockout stage game in the competition was Atalanta in November 2020 (scored 56 goals in 23 such matches since then).

Galatasaray have only won one of their last 18 games in the UEFA Champions League (D5 L12), while they lost their opening game in the competition this season by four goals (1-5 v Eintracht Frankfurt). They haven’t lost their first two games in a UEFA Champions League campaign since 2012-13.

    Galatasaray vs Liverpool Head-to-Head

Galatasaray and Liverpool are evenly matched historically, with each side claiming one win from their four previous encounters. However, Liverpool have struggled in Turkey, recording a draw and a defeat on their two trips.

The Reds drew 0-0 in the second group stage in 2002 before losing 3-2 in 2006, although that latter match was a dead rubber for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Liverpool did win the reverse fixture 19 years ago this week, a game remembered for Peter Crouch’s stunning scissor-kick goal.
