    Governorship aspirant seeks more  investments  in sports

    A governorship aspirant on the platform of  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Olufemi Ajadi, has congratulated the Super Eagles for winning bronze at the just-concluded 2025 African Cup of Nations.

    He called on the government and well-meaning  Nigerians to invest more in sports in order to empower youths.

    Ajadi  in a statement, hailed the Super Eagles for emerging third among the 24 countries that competed at the tournament.

    He praised the determination and commitment of the players to bring honour to the country.

    Meanwhile, Ajadi called on the team’s  handlers and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to keep the team together and ensure they are rewarded to ensure success in the  future.

    He advised Super Eagles’ coaching crew to employ penalty specialists to train them in penalty shoot-out.

    Ajadi admonished Federal and State governments to prioritise the development of youths through sports.

    The governorship hopeful and philanthropist has put youth developments in the front burner over the years, said governments and wealthy Nigerians should help in the development of youths.

    He urged the government to use sports to engage youths, saying this would discourage them from roaming about.

    Technical Advisor on Sports Development to Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, has described the Super Eagles’ Golden Bronze, as a validation of Nigeria’s football dominance on the continent and on the globe.

    Dr. Osetoba expressed her joy in the Super Eagles’ exhilarating Africa Cup of Nations run, adding that they deserve the respect and gratitude of all Nigerians.

    She stated that the Super Eagles’ performance was not just a display of resilience but an affirmation and testament of the Nigeria spirit in action.

    The Super Eagles soar to AFCON 2025 bronze after penalty shootout victory over Egypt, Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the Man of the Match as he saved the penalty of Liverpool star, Mohamed Salah and Man City star , Umar Marmoush, helping Nigeria secure a 4–2 shootout victory.

    Dr. Osetoba, a consummate sports administrator and entrepreneur, called on the Super Eagles to keep the flame burning and begin preparations ahead of the 2027 AFCON in order to put up a better showing.

    She praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) led by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General, Honourable Bukola Olopade for their steadfastness in developing sports in the country.

    “You know the next AFCON is not far off, so the NSC should kick their planning right away for a bigger and better outing next year, ” Dr. Osetoba  told  First Zealmediacast.

    She stressed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), should double their efforts as anything short of a final in 2027 will be considered as a failure.

    “The NFF should tie down the coach if they want him to continue and ask for a workable program from him,” she added.

    Enyimba Technical Adviser Deji Ayeni has urged his players to remain mentally strong after being held to a goalless draw by 10-man Barau FC in Aba.

    The People’s Elephant dominated much of the second half but were unable to turn numerical advantage into goals.

    “I feel so bad because the result is painful,” Ayeni admitted. “But we can’t reverse it. What matters now is finding solutions.”

    Ayeni identified anxiety in front of goal as a major factor behind the missed opportunities.

    “The boys were nervous because they were eager to win. That anxiety affected our finishing,” he explained.

    Despite the frustration, Ayeni expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to rediscover their winning edge.

    “I believe in progression. With 17 games to go, we can correct the issues and get it right,” he said.

    Enyimba will now face a demanding away run, starting with trips to Niger Tornadoes and Nasarawa United.

    Wikki Tourists head coach Abdu Maikaba has admitted his side is going through a difficult spell following their 1–0 loss to Plateau United in Jos.

    Despite dominating large portions of the match, Wikki Tourists failed to convert their chances and were punished early in the second half.

     “We are in a difficult moment,” Maikaba said after the encounter. “We played well, created chances, but couldn’t take them.”

    The coach, however, remained optimistic that his team would overcome their struggles with improved finishing and focus despite slipping to the relegation zone in the 17th spot with 23 points.

    The Benin Arsenals recovered from an early setback to claim maximum points and extend their impressive run in the NPFL.

    Speaking after the match, Boboye applauded his team’s resilience after conceding in the opening minutes.

    “The players showed great courage and discipline. Conceding early didn’t affect their belief,” he said.

    Boboye, however, admitted that the team is still a work in progress, particularly in attack.

     “We are still working to get a clinical goal scorer. In this league, proven goal scorers are few, but we will keep improving,” he added.

    Bendel Insurance now sit fifth on the table with 32 points and will next face Shooting Stars in Ibadan on Sunday, January 26.

    Niger Tornadoes head coach Majin Mohammed has admitted his team paid dearly for a poor first-half display following their 2–1 defeat to Nasarawa United at the Lafia City Stadium.

    The visitors conceded two early goals before mounting a spirited second-half comeback that ultimately fell short.

    “We started the game slowly and the home team took advantage to score their goals,” Mohammed said after the match.

    He praised his players’ response after the break, highlighting their dominance and improved attacking play following tactical changes.

    “We made some changes in the second half, dominated the game and created chances, but we could only convert one,” he added.

    Rivers United Technical Manager Finidi George has expressed satisfaction with the Pride of Rivers hard-fought victory over Remo Stars in their NPFL Matchday 21 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt last weekend.

    The Pride of Rivers dominated proceedings but had to wait until the 80th minute before Okon Aniekeme’s well-taken finish broke the deadlock.

     “It was a good game,” Finidi said after the match. “We created more chances to score, but that didn’t happen early, so we are quite happy with the victory that came in the second half.”

    The former Super Eagles head coach also praised his team’s patience and discipline, noting that their persistence eventually paid off against a stubborn Remo Stars side.

    The win keeps Rivers United four points clear at the top of the NPFL table with 41 points as attention now turns to continental duty.

    The 2021 league champions will next travel to Ndola, Zambia, where they face Power Dynamos FC in a CAF Champions League Matchday 3 encounter on Saturday, January 24.

    Kwara United head coach Ashifat Suleiman has expressed confidence in his side’s ability to recover despite their latest setback in the Nigeria Premier Football League tie against Ikorodu City which they lost 1-0.

    Speaking after the defeat in Lagos, Suleiman admitted the result was disappointing but insisted his team showed enough quality to deserve at least a share of the spoils.

     “This is a difficult period for us, but we will overcome it soon,” the coach said. “We were unlucky not to pick up at least a point in Lagos.”

    Suleiman also appealed to the club’s supporters to remain patient and supportive as the season enters a critical phase.

    “At this time, we need the full backing of our supporters. Their support will help the players regain confidence,” he added.

    The loss leaves the Harmony Boys on 24 points after 21 matches, sitting 16th on the NPFL standings.

    Kwara United will be exempted from league action this weekend with their Matchday 22 tie at home to Rivers United to be postponed with the league leaders’ involvement in the CAF Champions League away to Power Dynamos in Ndola, Zambia.

    Rangers, Warri Wolves secure important wins

    Rangers International  and Warri Wolves both ended their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 21 outings on a winning note as the final fixtures of the round were concluded on yesterday.

    At the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Rangers International produced a stunning performance to edge Kun Khalifat FC 2-1 in a fiercely contested Oriental derby. The visitors took the lead in the 44th  minute through Chidozie Iwundu but the home team equalised late in the game through James Ekebuike in the 87th  minute and looked set to escape with a draw.

    However, Rangers showed character and resilience before sealing the win deep into stoppage time as Iwundu struck again in the 96th  minute to snatch a sensational victory for the visitors. The win moved Rangers up to fifth place on the standings with 33 points, while Kun Khalifat remain rooted to the bottom of the table on 18 points after another painful home defeat.

    Meanwhile, at the Southern University Stadium in Ozoro, Warri Wolves made full use of home advantage with a convincing 2-0 win over Katsina United. After a goalless first half, the Seasiders came out stronger after the break and broke the deadlock in the 47th  minute through Igbunu Evwierhurhoma.

    Just four minutes later, Chisom Orji doubled the lead with a well-taken finish to seal the points for the hosts. The victory lifted Warri Wolves to eighth position with 30 points, while Katsina United dropped to 10th place on 29 points as the league campaign continues to gather momentum.

    Nigeria’s profile in global sports governance has received a major boost following the election of Olumide Oyedeji as Secretary General of the World Olympians Association (WOA).

    The National Sports Commission (NSC)  has congratulated the former Nigeria international basketball star, describing his emergence as a proud moment for the country and a landmark achievement for Africa.

    Oyedeji becomes the first African to hold the influential position in the history of the World Olympians Association.

    The election took place at the WOA Annual General Meeting on Sunday, where Oyedeji defeated two other candidates in a keenly contested race.

    He polled 55 votes, representing 51.88 per cent of the total, ahead of Salvador Salguero of El Salvador, who garnered 32 votes, and Puerto Rico’s Liston Bochette, who received 19 votes.

    In its congratulatory message, the NSC said Oyedeji’s victory was well deserved and a reflection of his years of dedicated service, integrity and commitment to sports development and athlete welfare at both national and international levels.

    Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, hailed the former basketball captain as a worthy ambassador of Nigeria and the Olympic movement.

     “Olumide Oyedeji’s election as Secretary General of the World Olympians Association is a proud moment for Nigeria and a clear recognition of his integrity, leadership, and lifelong service to sport and athlete welfare,” Olopade said.“

    “He has consistently represented our nation with distinction, both on and off the court, and we are confident he will uphold the values of the Olympic movement while flying the Nigerian flag with pride on the global stage.”

    Reacting to his election, Oyedeji expressed gratitude to Nigerian sports authorities for their continued support, pledging to serve with dedication and uphold the country’s image globally.

     “I use this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the DG and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission for the support they have continued to render to me and all others who strive to put our country’s name on the world sporting map,” Oyedeji said.

    “I further promise to do my best to uphold the name of our country at all times.”

    One of Nigeria’s most decorated basketball figures, Oyedeji captained the national team during a golden era and played a key role in the country’s rise on the continental stage.

    He captained the team that won Nigeria’s first AfroBasket title in Tunisia in 2015 and claimed silver medals at the FIBA Africa Nations Cup in 1997, 1999 and 2003.

    He also led Team Nigeria to its first-ever gold medal in basketball at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo.

    Beyond his playing career, Oyedeji has remained a prominent figure in sports administration.

    He currently serves as President of the Nigeria Olympians Association (NOA), 3rd  Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and Chairman of the Nigeria Athletes Commission, where he continues to champion athlete representation, development and welfare.

    With his election into the WOA leadership, Oyedeji’s journey from the basketball court to the global sports boardroom stands as another milestone for Nigerian sport.
