: Total Promotions appeals to minister

Broadcast rights owner of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), Total Promotions has appealed to the minister of sports and chairman National Sports Commission (NSC), Bolaji Adbullahi over the purported cancellation of the contract it signed with the NPL which runs till 2015.

Chairman of the broadcast outfit, Niyi Alonge told pressmen in Lagos on Tuesday that he was shocked by the action of the Interim League Management Committee to cancel an existing contract without any recourse to the laws of the land especially under a democratic regime.

“I was told that the minister was not happy that Total Promotions asked for an outright buy-out of the Title Rights but I am still standing on my promises to him that I am not fixated about the Title Rights. I willingly surrendered it to Globacom but asked for a buy-out,” Alonge said. “I did not renege on handing over the right to Globacom but as a commercial outfit we were merely asking for settlement after we had spent so much sponsoring the league in the last two years.

“I am still confused about the actions of the Interim Committee but we are studying the situation. One thing they do not want to know is the fact that Total Promotions had already committed over N40 million to the 2012/2013 league season, even when the season has not started. The minister is aware of this spending. They should check their records. What they are trying to do now is to shift the goalpost when a match has started. That will certainly run foul of the rules.

“I am appealing to the minister to use his good offices to intervene before the matter snowballs into litigation. Total Promotions has spent so much to keep the Nigerian league even at such a time when people said the league was worthless. Total Promotions kept the league running for two years, paying the salaries of the NPL workers and other sundry expenses of the secretariat.

“I know that the minister has a large heart and he will not allow Total Promotions to go under.”

Alonge revealed that he has made frantic efforts to reach the minister in the last two weeks through several phone calls, text messages and e-mail but to no avail. He appealed to the minister that jaw-jawing will help a lot in resolving this matter. “On our part, we shall exploit every available means to end this matter peacefully,” he said.

  • NFF denies plans to hire foreign manager

NFF denies plans to hire foreign manager

Nigeria Football Federation has denied that it planned to hire a foreign coach to boss Stephen Keshi.

Senate President David Mark had said after the team’s arrival from South Africa that Keshi told him that he was asked to accept a foreign coach to boss him and he turned that down leading eventually to his short-lived resignation.

However, NFF media chief, Ademola Olajire said there was no truth in the report that the body planned to hire a foreign technical adviser, maintaining the NFF has been fully behind the Super Eagles gaffer.

“It is not true that we wanted to employ a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, we have no reason to do that. We gave Keshi all the support he needed to do well,” MTNFootball.com quoted Olajire as saying on a television programme in Lagos Monday night.

“We never discussed that since Keshi took over the team. What we had planned was to have a technical director which is not for the Super Eagles. I see no reason why we will want Keshi that we employed to fail.”

Olajire also said the NFF has suspended all requests to host the Super Eagles till after a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kenya next month.

He said, “We have a crucial World Cup qualifier in March against Kenya, so preparation starts now. We don’t want any distraction so we told the states that still want to host Eagles to wait till after that game because the team needs full concentration ahead of the game.”

  • 10 stars Keshi should reconsider

    10 stars Keshi should reconsider

    10. Michael Eneramo

    Sivasspor striker

Eneramo has been a prolific goal scorer wherever he has played. The 27-year-old is currently one of the best African scorers in the Turkish top flight with eight goals in the league and five in the Turkish Cup. The former Esperance of Tunisia skipper is a bull on the pitch. He is a powerful striker who uses his strength and pace to outwit opponents. First capped by Nigeria in 2009, he has scored four goals in 10 caps for Nigeria. He last played for the Eagles in September 2011.

    9. Chinedu Obasi

    Schalke 04

    striker

Top-class striker on his day, but lately he has struggled with injuries which has limited his appearances for his German Bundesliga outfit. At 26 he still has age on his side and can play as a second striker and as a right winger. Once he can establish himself at his club, he could again be given another chance with the national team.

    8. Victor Nsofor Obinna

    Lokomotiv Moscow

    striker

Nsofor is a versatile forward who is known for scoring important goals for the Super Eagles. Injury and his form at his struggling Russian club have combined to keep him out of the international team for over a year now. He is forceful and direct when he is fit. He has yet to get his chance under Keshi and so he should be recalled.

    7. Onyekachi Apam Rennes

    defender

Onyekachi Apam is a defender of great quality but injury has limited him in the last two years. Apam is always rock solid in the heart of the defence or as right back. He has proved himself at U20 and Olympic team levels and was recently considered for a return to the Super Eagles only to be stopped by injury. He is always calm, rugged and great tackler. With the impending exit of skipper Joseph Yobo from the international stage, there is need for extra cover at the heart of the back four and this 26-year-old could provide it.

    6. Kalu Uche Kasimpasa

    midfielder or striker

He is another proven goal scorer with Nigerian blood running through him. He currently stars for Kasimpasa in Turkish top flight, where he is the team’s top scorer and second top scorer in the league with 12 goals. His versatility is an advantage to the Eagles as he could play as a point man, supporting striker and as an attacking midfielder. Uche was Nigeria best player at the 2010 World Cup after he made his long-awaited debut on 21 June 2003, in an African Nations Cup qualifier against Angola, scoring in the process.

    5. Raheem Lawal Mersin Idmanyurdu

    midfielder

He is an all round midfielder with power and skills. The former 36 Lion of Lagos player is a good tackler, passer

and dribbler. He also has a good vision for goals with long range shots. He was an important player for Adana Demirspor before he was bought over by Mersin Idmanyurdu in the Turkish top flight. He was a surprise omission to the 2013 Nations Cup, but should now be recalled to stake another claim in this squad.

    4. Obafemi Martins Levante

    striker

Obafemi Martins has proved himself again in the Spanish La Liga with Levante since his transfer in the summer from Russian club Rubin Kazan – He has fired eight goals in 19 matches thus far. He could not take his second chance in a friendly against Venezuela in November, but that does not mean he cannot still add bite to the Eagles strike force even if it means coming off the bench to do so. He is an experienced player as he has featured in three Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008 and 2010, and in the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

    3. Joel Obi

    Inter Milan

    midfielder

Enterprising defensive midfielder with a sweet left foot. His industry in the middle of the park will be invaluable to the Super Eagles once he is over his injury problems. He posted a five-star debut performance against Sierra Leone two years ago and a lot was expected of him before his injury problems set in.

    2. Sidney Sam Bayer

    Leverkusen

    winger or striker

Sidney Sam is a versatile player who could play as a winger or a striker. Born in Germany, he has decided to feature for Nigeria as a full international after he represented Germany at U19, U20 and U21 levels. Good enough Nigeria have begun processing his papers for this switch. He scores goals – 16 goals in 58 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen – and has pace to burn on the wings and so will be a valuable addition to Keshi’s squad.

    1. Victor AnichebeEverton

    striker

An imposing, bullish striker with great power and pace, who could also feature on the right side of midfield as well as a supporting striker. He could become a key star for club and country if only he could stay away from the treatment table. The 24-year-old striker is the younger version of Emmanuel Emenike after he made full international debut for Nigeria in a friendly against Austria in May 2008. He would most certainly be a fantastic addition to the Eagles attack. He already has 11 caps and a goal.

  • Omeruo out of AYC

    Omeruo out of AYC

Flying Eagles officials have left out Kenneth Omeruo from a 30-man provisional squad for the 2013 African Youth Championship.

The biennial championship, which kicks off in Algeria from March 16, will produce four African representatives for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey later this year, MTNFootball.com reports.

Omeruo featured for the Flying Eagles in the AYC qualifier in October against South Africa, but he has since made the big jump to the full international side where he shone as the Super Eagles emerged African champions in South Africa last weekend.

The John Obuh- led technical crew picked four overseas-based players in the provisional squad for the tournament,.

The final 21-man list will be submitted to the Confederation of African Football not later than March 6.

The foreign-based players are Mikel Agu (FC Porto), Saliu Sodiq (FC Metz, France), Bright Osagie (Red Bull Salzburg, Austria) and Edafe Egbedi (AGF Aarhus, Denmark).

26 other players are drawn from the Nigeria domestic league.

The squad will depart Abuja on Monday afternoon for two warm-up matches in Cairo against their Egyptian counterparts and later fly out to Tunisia for a three-week training camp ahead of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has tasked the team to retain the trophy the country won in South Africa two years ago and qualify for the U20 World Cup in Turkey.

NFF technical director, Emmanuel Ikpeme, addressed the players before their departure to Cairo.

“We expect you to successfully defend your title and qualify for the World Cup,” Ikpeme urged the Flying Eagles.

“You should fight to make a name for yourselves in Algeria and we will support you fully.”

    The squad:

Goalkeepers: Emmanuel Daniel, Jonah Usman, Samuel Okani

Defenders: Chizoba Amaefule, Shehu Abdullahi, Ikechukwu Okorie, Kingsley Madu, Hassan Abubakar, Ekoh Favour Oke, Aliyu Mohammed Goyi, Aigbe Oliha

  • Africa’s next superstar

    Africa’s next superstar

Three-time African Player of the Year Samuel Eto’o is renowned for his acceleration and clinical finishing. Two-time winner Didier Drogba is renowned for his strength and power. 22-year-old Nigerian Victor Moses has the potential to become renowned for all these abilities and to become Africa’s next superstar. Victor Moses was a catalyst for Nigeria’s recent African Cup of Nations success – only the third time in their history that the Super Eagles have lifted the trophy.

His performances throughout the Cup of Nations earned him a place in the team of the tournament alongside three of his fellow countrymen.

Moses was particularly influential in the final game of the group stage where he won two penalties and converted them both as Nigeria recorded a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia to book their place in the knockout phase.

Victor Moses made his senior professional debut for Crystal Palace at the age of just 16 after being on the books at the Selhurst Park side since 11 years old, re-locating to England from Nigeria after his parents were killed during religious riots.

Moses impressed throughout his three seasons with the Eagles and gained the attention of several Premier League managers including Wigan’s Roberto Martinez who described the forward as “a special talent” after he signed for the Latics in the 2010 January transfer window.

Moses spent three full seasons at the DW season, growing in maturity each year and becoming an ever-more important player for Wigan in their constant fight against relegation to the Championship.

One of the highlights in his time with the Latics was his starring role in a shock 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates, where he set up two goals in a game which proved to be a turning point in Wigan’s season.

Moses achieved greater consistency in his third season with Wigan and in doing so sparked the interest of London giants Chelsea who after a protracted transfer battle signed the Nigerian youngster for £9million in August 2012.

Moses has had to work hard for a place in the starting eleven at Stamford Bridge and has been in and out of the team under both Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez, achieving 21 appearances and 5 goals for the reigning European champions.

When included in the first team lineup Moses has impressed. His role in this season’s 1-1 draw with Swansea, where he scored his first Chelsea goal, prompted then manager Di Matteo to comment “He has been doing very well. Every time he has played he has perfomed very well.” “He is a big threat. He has tricks and pace and is becoming more effective when he finds space.”

Although often reduced to brief cameo appearances from the bench in his first season in a Chelsea shirt, many supporters at Stamford Bridge may be questioning why their management team continue to persist with the ever mis-firing Fernando Torres and why they haven’t turned to both Victor Moses and West Brom loanee Romanu Lukaku for a more dynamic, pacy and threatening front-line as they look to ensure their Champions League place for next year.

  • Keshi, Amadu hail TomTom

    Keshi, Amadu hail TomTom

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has heaped praises on TomTom, the Official Candy of the Nigerian national football teams, for its unflinching support and commitment to the development of football in Nigeria.

At the reception organised by TomTom in honour of the African champions in Lagos, Keshi said that with brands like TomTom who care for football in Nigeria, the national teams and their performances, the country’s football would continue to develop and the teams would not relent in putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians and make them proud.

Keshi maintained that with the right support, there is no way the country’s football would not develop, assuring that his own team has resolved to keep making Nigerians happy.

“It is appropriate to thank TomTom for all it has been doing for Nigerian football. Its effort has been a great motivation for us. If we have brands like TomTom behind us, our football will keep moving forward and we will continue to make Nigerians proud,” he said.

Keshi showered encomiums on TomTom for having great vision for the country’s football through its initiatives and also for having faith in his team particularly when most people believed it could not deliver.

“Wherever we go, TomTom will be there because we know now that it cares for our football, the Super Eagles and their performance. By the grace of God, my team will go places,” Keshi assured.

The General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Barrister Musa Amadu also applauded TomTom for the support it has been giving the national teams.

“They have stuck with the national teams, particularly the Super Eagles through thick and thin, even when a lot of people didn’t believe they would deliver. They have also stuck with the NFF and they have soothed our nerves and make us to breathe better. We appreciate the sponsorship relationship between Cadbury’s TomTom and NFF and I believe it will go higher from here,” Ahmadu said.

During the reception and trophy visit, the rewards promised by the brand were presented to the team. These include the Most Valuable Player award by Victor Moses, which is valued at $10,000 (about N1.6 million) and the Shot-on-Target, which totalled $12,500 (about N2 million) for the 25 shots-on-target recorded throughout the championship. The team also got N10 million reward for lifting the AFCON trophy.

Emil Moskofian, Managing Director of Cadbury West Africa, while presenting the team with the prizes, commended the team for making over 170 million Nigerians proud with their achievement. He assured the team of TomTom’s continuous support. He announced that with the Africa Cup of Nations in the kitty, the next target is the FIFA World Cup and the brand would be there for the team.

The reception also dovetailed into TomTom Editors Roundtable, the popular no-holds-barred session between Super Eagles coach and senior sports editors where Keshi exchanged ideas on how to build on his team’s achievement.

Maccabi Tel Aviv session: Enyeama trains again

According to the official website of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Nigeria goalie Vincent Enyeama returned to Israel on Friday night and had his first training session with his teammates after more than one month of absence due to national team assignment with the Super Eagles.

The Yellows are preparing for the 23rd round of matches in the Israeli championship against Bnei Yehuda today. Enyeama received flowers from the club for winning the African Cup.

At this point, it is unknown if Enyeama would replace back-up goalie Barak Levi for the encounter at the Bloomfield Satdium, Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, the other Nigerian at Maccabi Tel Aviv Kehinde Olanrewaju scored a last-gasp goal after 89 minutes in the 1 – 0 win over bitter rivals Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Youth League on Saturday. He was also on target last week against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

    Head injury: Etuhu knocked unconscious

Kelvin Etuhu younger brother of Dickson was stretched out unconscious while in a FA Cup action for his Championship side Barnsley on Saturday. But reports suggest that Etuhu is much better now after the initial scare.

Though his team finished with a 3-1 FA Cup fifth-round win over MK Dons, Barnsley Coach David Flitcroft admitted he feared another Fabrice Muamba nightmare when Etuhu was knocked out in during the FA Cup clash.

The midfielder who was formally courted to play for Nigeria in the youth level needed seven minutes’ treatment on the pitch after clashing heads with Dons defender Adam Chicksen. Both physios rushed on to the pitch to help the stricken player, who was immediately taken to hospital.

Flitcroft told The Sun: “Kelvin wasn’t responding initially and that’s what the physios were worried about. It reminded me of Muamba at White Hart Lane last year. It is sickening. The game becomes totally unimportant when that happens.

Speaking further on the sad incidence with Eurosports.com, Flitcroft said the injury was a bad one and something he will not forget in a hurry.

“You certainly don’t want to be involved in anything unsavoury and it certainly was,” he said.

“Kelvin is a tough boy and when you see him flat out on the pitch and coming past on a stretcher with blood strewn over his nose and face, it is something that will probably haunt me,” the Manger remarked.

  • Imbibing cycling for a healthy lifestyle

Imbibing cycling for a healthy lifestyle

Heard about an incredibly brave group of people who cycled to Cotonou a few weeks ago and wondered what on earth might possess them to do such a thing, then you’re in good company. They are the first organised riding club of their kind in Nigeria, and bring a group of 20 – 50 something year olds together for fitness, fun, and camaraderie. Their ride to Cotonou is the first in a long line of ambitious adventures they have planned.

It is no secret that riding is a brilliant form of exercise. It builds muscle tone, improves cardiovascular health, burns calories, and improves circulation. Frank Ozoma, the Captain of Cycology, explained how he began cycling as part of his desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle. He noticed, much to his delight that the weight he had been trying to shift dropped off, and cycling has remained the mainstay of his fitness regime. Cycling has the added benefit of being lower impact than running, for example, so is a great option for people who want to keep fit without aggravating their knees.

It was inspiring to spend the evening with so many passionate, dedicated people – men and women alike. There is great energy buzzing through the Cycology team, and they are very keen to welcome new members. If you have been looking for an activity that will address your fitness goals, and also compliment your social life, Cycology may be worth exploring. They ride every Saturday at 6.30am from either Chicken Republic Awolowo Road or Admiralty Way, Lekki 1, depending on the route of the day’s ride.

Cycology Riding Club is a club whose members are passionate about cycling and it seeks to promote cycling as a healthy lifestyle, and through cycling help raise public awareness about various problems plaguing our community. The club sponsored the cyclists that represented Lagos State at the last National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012 and it hopes to do more to promote and develop the sports in Nigeria. Captain of the club, Frank Ozomah spoke to journalists recently

    Why the choice of cycling?

Cycology is a club made up of professionals. The primary reason was for a bunch of us to keep healthy and promote cycling as a lifestyle alternative. The objectives of the club are 3 fold: i) promote cycling as a healthy lifestyle alternative (ii) draw attention to social issues through cycling, (iii) promote and sponsor a professional cycling team that would represent Nigeria someday at the Tour de France.

Can you let us into some of the activities you have been involved in lately?

We have undertaken a number of charity rides this year. There was the Ride for Life in May, were we supported the Child Developmental Center an NGO that takes care of children with disabilities, we did the Lagos Cotonou ride a ride we undertook in support of 3 charities, we part sponsored the Lagos State Cycling Team. We also presented gifts to the motherless babies home. We have also grown the club from about 15 members to over 100 members out of which 80 are paid up members. In the coming year we intend to support more charities and further draw attention to social issues afflicting our community we will also begin a grass root development of cycling as a sport in Lagos State by introducing it to schools and begin talent hunting for a cycling team. We will also try and grow our membership by at least another 100 people.

What are you doing to promote the sports in Lagos n particular and the nation at large?

Well cycling is actually a sport and not a game and it’s a serious sport at that. We intend to hold a number of events that will promote cycling. Also in conjunction with the Commissioner of Sports who has been very supportive and the State Cycling Association we intend to organize a major Cycling event in Lagos State. Consolidate on what we did this year. Drive membership, undertake more charity rides, start a grass root program targeting schools, start the process of starting a professional team, and start a Cycology Club in the UK. We have a board of trustees headed by Dr. Richard Ajayi and Mr Dipo Balogun as Secretary. Our Executive Committee is made up of myself as Captain, Ladipo Soetan as Vice Captain Admin and Mohammed Ramadan his Egyptian as Vice Captain Riding. The club currently is just open to professionals.

Are there other projects in your agenda?

Yes we are a change agent that wants to sensitize the State Government to be more mindful of cyclist in infrastructural development. We also intend to get Lagosians riding for us this helps us impact our community as we help in our own little way promote a greener environment. To have a team at the Tour de France and put Lagos on the cycling map. We also want to become the largest cycling club in the country with State chapters. Starting a grass root program in schools, and proving the enabling environment, spend money on training, coaching, providing the right equipment and proper exposure, and getting the cyclists to compete internationally is one of our major priorities.

Creating awareness and a new generation of Nigerians using cycling, what suggestions will you make?

I will like to say all our secondary schools should at least have a cycling club. What will this entails? It will entail just a few tips from the Lagos Cycling Association and some of the growing cycling clubs in Lagos to go into the schools or to enable the schools to embrace the idea of cycling into their sporting activities. I have been to so many inter-house sports, cycling is not one of the sports being competed for, it is never done.

Meanwhile, it is something that can help these students. And all these schools can have competitions, a summer holiday can be so full of activities, children will not just go anywhere else but just to hang-out with their mates and do a lot of things around cycling. So I would suggest that we start by going into the schools and helping them to set up bicycle clubs, from there, we can set up bicycle clubs with our paramilitary, army, the police and customs. And organizations should be encouraged to set up cycling clubs for their staff and families. We have organizations with branches round this country, they need to set up a cycling club and have competitions among zones. It will reduce emission and help the people to stay healthy. You remember Obama, when he came in with the health reform, his idea was prevention. When you have more people going on cycles, you have less expense on drugs. People do not have the danger of using fake drugs, if they go on their bicycles regularly, they will be healthier and they do not have to go to the hospitals, if they have to go to the hospitals, it will be for check-ups, which is very important. But they will spend less on trying to treat diseases, all because they have been on bicycles for a while.

As mentioned above. We raise funds for Charities; distribute bikes to rural communities to help children get to schools and farmers getting their produce to the markets. Draw attention to various social ills. Very good form of cardiovascular exercise. Membership dues and sponsorship from corporate entities.
