  • CHECKING DOPING IN SPORTS: FIFA insists on biological profiles for Eagles

Nigeria’s Super Eagles and other participating teams at this year’s Confederations Cup in Brazil will only be allowed to play with biological profiles according to world’s football governing body, FIFA.

SportingLife checks on Friday revealed that the Joseph Blatter-led FIFA intend to introduce the system as part of the worldwide crackdown on doping in sport and it should be fully operational by the next World Cup.

Interestingly, a delegation from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) met FIFA officials at their Zurich headquarters on Thursday, and WADA president John Fahey said his agency was “very satisfied with the commitment of FIFA on the biological profiles”.

FIFA medical officer Michel D’Hooghe said: “FIFA was the first international organisation for team sport to start with longitudinal profiles.”

He explained that FIFA is developing plans to introduce profiling, including a steroid profile through urine and a blood profile, for the Confederations Cup, where in-and-out-of-competition tests would be conducted on all participating players, as well as unannounced blood testing at training camps and games.

“And it’s our commitment to have all players participating at the 2014 FIFA World Cup having biological profiles,” he added

Biological profiling is considered one of the most effective methods of detecting the use of performance-enhancing drugs and blood boosters like EPO.

EPO was first tested for by FIFA at the 2002 World Cup where all players had to undergo urine and blood testing and whenever the results were abnormal, an EPO test was performed. All results were negative.

FIFA is also developing the hormonal profiling project, a new initiative in collaboration with the WADA-accredited laboratory in Switzerland.

“There is always more which can be done in the fight against doping, but we know FIFA has always been serious in this domain,” Fahey added.

    Asaba Stadium named after Keshi

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has named the Asaba Stadium after Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to win a third AFCON title.

At a reception held at the Asaba International Event Centre, Uduaghan also rewarded Keshi with a sum of eight million Naira as well as a duplex in the state capital.

Keshi’s assistants, Daniel Amokachi, Sylavnus Okpala, and Ike Shorunmu got four million Naira each, while each player got 2.5m naira.

Members of the team who were old and present players of Warri Wolves got N5million. They are AFCON final hero Sunday Mba, Chigozie Agbim, Azuibike Egwekwe, and Nosa Igiebor.

More state governments are in line to fete the victorious team.

    Fashola splashes N59m on Eagles

The Lagos State government yesterday hosted the victorious Super Eagles at the Lagos House, Alausa where the state governor, Babatunde Fashola doled out a total of 59 million Naira to the team in appreciate of their winning the African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The chief coach of the team, Stephen Keshi got N2.5m; Daniel Amokachi N2m; the four assistant coaches got N1.5m while the captain of the team, Joseph Yobo was rewarded with N1.5m. The other 22 players got one million naira each. The 11 back room staff got the sum of N15m while the Nigerian Football and other Sports Supporters Club were given N4.5m naira.

Fashola, while addressing the team, congratulated them on their achievement but warned that rather than resting on its oars, the team’s success should spur it to greater heights. He said: “The question to ask is what next? We have Kenya in a few days. Let us remind ourselves that the immediate defending champions of this tournament that we have just won did not make it to the second round. So, we have the Confederation Cup in June and I am going to be there with the team. Yes, we have moved from a very abysmal ranking to fourth in Africa which is not good enough, and 30th in the world, but let me remind us that in 1994, we used to be sixth in the world. Some people doubted that ranking then but I told anybody who cares to listen that it was a well deserved ranking and Daniel Amokachi will remember, Bulgaria that we beat in the first round played in the semi final. Italy that eliminated us played in the finals, so it was not a fluke that we were fifth. We beat almost every team that we faced going to the World Cup, but the story is now history. So, the Confederation Cup provides us with an opportunity to improve our ranking. What that does is that in the main draw of the World Cup we will not play very strongly ranked team because we will be seeded. It is a building block through process to process. If we go with a lower ranking because we did not do well in the Confederation Cup, and focus only on the World cup…There must be a plan so that we can travel farther through the World Cup and as Mr. Seni Adetu said, let us moderate our expectations.”

The governor frowned at the interference with the duties of the head coach by some football house official saying that the head coach of the national team should be allowed to do his job within the time frame given to him to achieve certain goals and nobody should interfere with his job. His words: “Everybody in Nigeria today is a football expert. Let us respect those people that we have employed to do this job. If we think that they cannot do it, let us set timelines and then change them. I think the practice where people (officials) barge into the dressing room at half time uninvited should stop.

  • Rangers vs Enyimba: ‘Oriental Derby’ opens new NPL season

Rangers vs Enyimba: ‘Oriental Derby’ opens new NPL season

NPL runners-up Enugu Rangers will host six-time champions Enyimba in another ‘Oriental Derby’ to open the league on Saturday, March 9. This followed the NPL draw in Abuja on Friday afternoon.

In other opening week fixtures, defending champions Kano Pillars will start their title defence away at Wikki Tourists, while there is Ilorin derby involving ABS and kwara United on Sunday.

The league will now be played as a regular season after the clubs rejected an abridged league proposal of the interim management board of the league led by Nduka Irabor.

The chairmen of the clubs turned down the interim committee’s plan to have the 2012/2013 season abridged because of the late kick-off. The meeting between both parties delayed the draw for about four hours.

One of the club bosses argued that Nigeria is an African country, so the league ought to follow the CAF calendar and not that of Europe.

“We want a full season and regular season, not an abridged league that the board want because I don’t see any reason why we have to follow the European football calendar and not the CAF calendar,” he said.

  • NFF shelves plans for foreign director

NFF shelves plans for foreign director

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that it has no plans to contract a foreign technical director for the national teams.

Reports had it that the NFF had on Thursday announced “that there was no going back on its plan to hire a foreign technical director for the national teams.”

The NFF has now denied the reports stating that the federation had no such plans at the moment.

“There is nothing like that. The NFF has no such plans at least not at this moment,” Executive committee member of the NFF, Chris Green told supersport.com on Thursday.

Green said the federation was doing all within its power to see that Nigerian football becomes a global brand.

“The federation is concerned with making the Super Eagles and Nigerian football a big brand in world football. We are champions of Africa and we must build on this success. The Super Eagles and Nigerian football will be put on the window as we try to make it a brand,” he said.

  • Service without honour

Nigeria was thrown into a celebration mood as the victorious Champions of Africa were received into the country by a mammoth crowd amidst cheers and shouts of joy. The atmosphere was electrifying as both young and old all came out in mass to welcome the Super Eagles of Nigeria. There were broad smiles and laughter as people begin to recount the heroic feat of the team in the just concluded African Cup of Nations Competitions tagged AFCON 2013 which was held in South Africa

As I make my way through O. R Thambo Airport in Johannesburg on my way back home to Nigeria from South Africa I noticed a significant change in the airport as I witnessed various shades of green and white jerseys, emblems and flags all having an inscription of Nigeria or its colours of its National flag. The feeling was gratifying as we observed proud Nigerians making their way back home with a good feeling of national rebirth and proud African Champions.

The flight back home though long was not boring as we observed people chatting and laughing all through the flights am also sure that the level of alcohol consumption for that flight would have marginally increased because the moment calls for constant drink as we canvassed by fellow passenger.

On 13th February, 2013 the victorious Super Eagles arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport aboard a chartered aircraft sent by Government to receive the team. The atmosphere was electrifying as the team was been awaited by a crowd outside the Airport. This crowd were also encountered all through the long stretch of road from the airport to the National Stadium. There were cheers from school children, youth groups, organized social groups, workers and passer by’s even security personnel’s on duty could not help but to join in the euphoria of celebrating.

The icing on the cake was the Presidential Reception at the Villa and it was here I observed that success really have got many friends the President rewarded the team and its officials the team and coaches got a National Award, lands and Monetary reward. A situation that awaken my philosophical reasoning which made me to develop the following hypothetical question:

    1. Why were other officials not given a national award and lands

    2. Why were the sport managers who labored to prepare the team not rewarded

    3. What would have been the faith of the Managers had the team failed to do well

    4. What lesson is there to be learnt by sport managers who worked very hard to achieve this success but were not recognized nor awarded

I vividly remember one of my lecturers during my postgraduate class wherein he asked the question which is most appropriate to show gratitude for a job well done is it award or reward. Also, in another class we discussed the aspect of Athlete’s Exploitation a process whereby upon achievement of success those who were never involved in the team’s preparation or work towards such success are seen conspicuously trying to outdo all involved.

With this success I expect that Government will be convinced on the power of sport and its effects on the nation thus I had expected that by now a working mechanism that will see to the actual development of this sector will be activated and properly financed to ensure that Nigeria Sport is given its rightful place in the scheme of things within the Nation

The position been postulated here is the need for all involved in sport to be properly recognized and when required to be well rewarded and awarded for a job well done the case of the Nigeria Football Federation as an institution need not be over emphasized as their hard work and committed service has translated into bringing glory to the Nation this feat is something that I feel should be acknowledge and well recognized to stimulate the required spirit in other boards and federations towards achieving the greatness desired. We need to reward successful managers of our sport as much as we recognize the efforts of the players and technical crew.

Without over flogging this discuss let me thank the President for his recognition of the heroes of our time after all we once witnessed the era of Presidential handshake but today we have a President who have also given a handshake, National Award, Landed Property and Cash Gift what more do we need than to appreciate this gesture and say more of such is what we need to see in Nigeria.

May I also commend all managers involved in the preparation of this team because as a professional I know that the 90mins of play is a conglomeration of months of hard work and sleepless nights by the Sport Managers and such people I will like to commend for this great success as far as we are concerned the best Football Federation in Africa today and in the next two years is Nigeria Football Federation let us all join our voices as we say bravo to all concerned and congratulations to our dear country Nigeria.

  • Enyeama keeps Maccabi Tel Aviv waiting

Enyeama keeps Maccabi Tel Aviv waiting

As reported by Sports Walla, Super Eagles Nigeria stand-in captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama will land in Israel this weekend.

Maccabi Tel Aviv, the league leaders, travel to face Dele Aiyenugba’s Bnei Yehuda in the 23rd of matches in the Ligat ha’Al this coming Monday.

Enyeama, who was officially chosen as the best goalkeeper at the just concluded African Nations Cup, failed to arrive in Israel since the end of the tournament in South Africa because the Nigeria President hosted the team to a state reception in Abuja earlier in the week.

If the Nigeria international does not practice today with the rest of his teammates, he could be omitted from the squad which plays Bnei Yehuda. It is very likely that young goalkeeper Barak Levi will be preferred in goal.

On loan at Maccabi Tel Aviv until the end of the season, Vincent Enyeama has made 16 appearances for the Yellows in the Israeli top flight.

Osaze fires agents after transfer fiasco

Nigeria striker Osaze Odemwingie has sacked his agents, he said on his Twitter account.

The 31-year-old striker was the centre of attention on transfer deadline day when mixed messages saw him drive to London believing he was due to sign for QPR.

West Bromwich Albion denied a deal had been struck and manager Steve Clarke said just two weeks ago that the Nigeria international should seek new representatives.

“I have sacked my agents. They are at my gate begging for permission to negotiate a comeback. Told them to seek permission from authorities,” Odemwingie tweeted.

Odemwingie, who was reportedly fined two weeks’ wages for his transfer deadline madness, traveled with the West Brom squad on Monday as they beat Liverpool in an English Premier League fixture, but watched the game from the stands.

The match commissioner is Sombo Wesley from Liberia.

  • Ideye faces Dynamo sanction

    Ideye faces Dynamo sanction

Super Eagles forward Brown Ideye will be sanctioned by Dynamo Kiev for failing to return to Kiev on Thursday after Nigeria’s heroics at the just-concluded African Cup of Nations.

Ideye returned with the Eagles to Abuja on the orders of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday, and was missing in Dynamo Kiev’s 1-1 draw with Bordeaux on Thursday night. However, Dynamo coach, Oleg Blokhin insists the Nigerian striker will be called to order, even as he hailed the professionalism showed by Celtic’s Efe Ambrose.

”It is necessary to take some kind of sanctions, as the man left the team. Sanctions are necessary to force players to return to the club on time. Ambrose was back in time because of Celtic. He played in the final of the African Cup on the 10th and was already out on the field for Celtic on the 12th,” Blokhin was quoted as saying by footboom.com.

Meanwhile, SportingLife can authoritatively reveal today that Ideye departed for Kiev Friday night and will be able to make it for today’s training with the Ukrainian Premier League outfit.

It would be recalled that former Golden Eaglets captain, Lukman Haruna was on target for Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League tie against Bordeaux on Thursday before Ludovic Obraniak equalized for the French side.

Ideye and his Dynamo mates return to action in the Ukrainian Premier League on March 3 with a home game against Kryvbas.
