  • Albiol plays down Ronaldo-Mourinho incident

REAL Madrid defender Raul Albiol has played down an incident between Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the aftermath of the Blancos’ Copa del Rey win over Valencia in midweek.

Several reports claimed that a heated confrontation had taken place between the Portuguese duo after Tuesday’s match, but Albiol has stressed that it was nothing more than a normal discussion.

“Ronaldo and Mourinho are both winners. They only exchanged their opinions. What happened does in no way affect the rest of the team,” the defender said at a press conference.

  • Fergie slams foreigners for diving scourge

MANCHESTER United manager Alex Ferguson says he believes overseas players are responsible for the blight of diving in the English Premier League.

Today,United come up against Tottenham Hotspurs ‘ Gareth Bale, who has been booked for simulation three times this season, while rumoured United target Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace has also been accused of going down too easily.

Ferguson, though, is adamant that the influx of foreign players in the English top flight is to blame for the practice becoming more widespread.

“There is a connection to the foreign players coming into our game, I don’t think there is any doubt about that,” he said.

Ferguson’s remarks follow the controversial admission by Liverpool’s Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez that he dived in an unsuccessful attempt to win a penalty during a league game against Stoke City in October.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has pledged to punish Suarez over his comments and Ferguson agrees that the responsibility to police the matter falls on club managers.

“Do the sanctions come from the club or the FA (Football Association)?” Ferguson asked.

“The FA have a problem because, is it legal? How can they prove a lad has purposely dived?

“It is very difficult. The FA have always said that. Does it go to the clubs? At the end of the day, it probably does.

“We did it with Cristiano (Ronaldo). He was only a young boy when he came to us and it took him a couple of years to understand. But after that, he was fine.”

  • Federer, Serena blast Armstrong

ROGER Federer says Lance Armstrong’s admission that he took performance-enhancing drugs during his cycling career has affected all of sport and the world’s athletes.

“What a sad story,” Federer said after his three-set win yesterday over Bernard Tomic at the Australian Open.

“Obviously he’s hurt his sport in a big way, even though he helped it in the beginning. But now the burden they live under, all other sports maybe as well.”

Federer, a 17-time major winner, said he watched the first portion of the interview that Armstrong did with Oprah Winfrey.

“I guess all I needed to see was the first few minutes and then I knew what was the deal, and the rest I don’t really care,” Federer said. “I’m an active athlete right now, and it’s not fun times really to be in sports to a degree.”

  • Guardiola won’t drag Barca stars to Bayern

PEP Guardiola’s father says his son will not look to take any Barcelona stars to Bayern Munich.

The former Blaugrana boss will take over from Jupp Heynckes in the Allianz Arena hot seat as of this summer, following an announcement earlier this week.

Since then, rumors have linked Guardiola with a number of his former players after he admitted he would look to replicate the style of football he implemented at Camp Nou with his new club.

“Barça is his home. He’s not going to pull it apart, how would his home end up then?”, Valentí Guardiola told Deportes Cuatro.

He then gave his thoughts on a possible language barrier stalling his son’s progress at Bayern and whether or not he will be able to enjoy the same success in Germany as he did in Spain.

“Only time will tell. He’ll put everything into his job and he will be able to defend himself in German,” he added.

    Egwuekwe doubtful against Burkina Faso

NIGERIA defender Azubuike Egwuekwe is a major doubt for tomorrow’s opening Group C match against Burkina Faso due to illness.

The towering Warri Wolves stopper missed the team’s accreditation for the AFCON on Friday.

However, Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya assured Egwuekwe will be fit for Monday’s match.

“He’s just under the weather and should be fine for the first game.

Previously an ever-present under coach Stephen Keshi, Egwuekwe has lost his first-team place to Godfrey Oboabona, who is now expected to partner skipper Joseph Yobo in the heart of the back four.

Meanwhile, skipper Yobo has vouched for the discipline in the Eagles team.

Players of Super Eagles in recent past have been accused of not showing enough commitment during national team action.

However, Yobo has insisted that indiscipline is a thing of the past with this team.

“I think the discipline level is very high. We have a coach who is an ex-captain of the team and knows what it means to keep a discipline side. We are getting better and the issue of indiscipline in the Eagles does not exist in this team,” he said.

The coach Keshi-led side had a closed-door training session and the team are billed to meet with the media today at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Malian Eagles in high spirit despite civil unrest

MALI team spirit is high for the Africa Cup of Nations here even though the country has been embroiled in a conflict with Islamist militant groups in the vast desert northern region.

Since January 2012, insurgents have been fighting Malian troops for greater independence for northern Mali. This month, troops from other African states backed by French air and ground forces moved in.

French-born Mali coach Patrice Carteron said the involvement of foreign troops has made his players feel a lot safer and they are now confident the conflict will end soon.

“It has not been easy as this war has been going on for a year now, but the involvement of foreign troops led by France has lifted the spirit of the players as well as the entire country,” said the former Lyon defender.

“They are now a lot more confident that the country will be peaceful again soon and life can return to normal.”

Football has been a big uniting force for Malians amid insecurity in the country, Carteron added.

Antoine Griezmann headed down the ball to Carlos Vela who moved it wide to Castro who took a touch and placed a pinpoint shot past Victor Valdés hand in to the far corner.

Sociedad kept up the pressure in the second half and things turned in their advantage in the 55th minute when defender Gerard Piqué brought down Vela and earned his second yellow card of the match and the corresponding marching orders that come with a red card.

They were quick to take advantage finding an equalizer in the 62nd minute. Barceland appeared to be on their way to at least holding on for the draw but Sociedad wasn’t done. Imanol Agirretxe finished a Carlos Martinez cross one minute in to stoppage time to give Sociedad the unlikely victory.

It’s Barcelona’s first lost in La Liga this season while Sociedad leaps up to fifth place in the table for the moment.

“It’s not very nice, but this is football, that I play for the second team. I train in the expectation that I get a new club. I had to agree to this step at this time until I find a new team.

“I hope to find a new club in the next few days. Regardless of whether or not I stay, I stay professional and I will perform my duties with full dedication,” adds Ayila.

Yussuf Ayila’s contract with Dynamo Kiev expires in the summer of 2015.
