We won’t underrate Cape Verde – Musa

Super Eagles striker, Ahmed Musa has said they will not underrate giant killers Cape Verde in Wednesday’s African Cup of Nations warm-up in Portugal.

Cape Verde will make their AFCON debut in South Africa after they eliminated four-time winners Cameroon in the qualifying tournament.

MTNFootball.com reports that Nigeria and Cape Verde will be meeting for the first time on Wednesday in Faro, Portugal, and the West African islanders will rely on a 10-man Portugal-based contingent led by Heldon, Ze Luis and Djaniny to put to sword another big-name scalp.

Cape Verde is ranked 69th in the world, while Nigeria is seven places ahead.

The Blue Shark will play in Group A along with hosts South Africa, Angola and Morocco, while the Eagles will slug it out with Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in group D.

However, CSKA Moscow forward Musa has told MTNFootball.com the Eagles are fully prepared for Cape Verde, who remains largely a closed book.

“We are ready for the game. I can’t say whether the game will be easy or tough because we know little or nothing about Cape Verde, but we are aware they stopped Cameroon from reaching AFCON 2013 but they should know we are the Super Eagles of Nigeria and not Cameroon,” Musa warned.

“It is going to be a good test for us as Cape Verde will also play at the AFCON,” added Portland Timbers of USA striker Bright Dike, who scored Nigeria’s goal in last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Catalonia.

“I am looking forward to a good game and victory for the team, but getting another goal in this will be great for me, but I want victory,” he added.

    NFF vets Eagles’ final list

Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for the AFCON will be vetted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee before it is made public.

Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya said Nigerians may not get to know the Eagles final squad on Tuesday as expected because the NFF technical committee would have to vet the list and then approve it.

“The team list will be ready today (Tuesday) by lunch time, but I don’t think it will be released to the public today because the list has to be sent to NFF technical committee to approve it,” Alaiya said.

“We are expecting NFF president Aminu Maigari, technical committee chairman Chris Green and sports minister Bolaji Aminu (sic), if they arrive in time, it could make it faster to make public the list.”

The official said there is anxiety in the Eagles’ training camp in Faro, Portugal, as the players are eager to know their fate.

“There is anxiety in camp as every player wants to be on the list which is not possible, there are some players who are so confident they are on the list, but some are not,” he reported.

“The anxiety showed on faces of some players when the two-a-side training on Monday and those who stayed out were wondering whether they will make it or not. We trained by 8pm local time yesterday (Monday), the actual time we are to play Cape Verde on Wednesday.”

NIGERIA VS BURKINA FASO Stallions can shock Eagles, says Put

    • Keeps mum on game plan against Nigeria
    • Hires psychologist to boost team

SportingLife brings you the thoughts of Coach of Burkina Faso, Paul Put from an extract of the interview the Belgian gave an Ouagadogu based newspaper prior to the Stallions’ departure to South Africa for their AFCON preparations in Nelspriut. The Burkinabes are one of Nigeria’s Group C opponents.

    Excerpts…

With Zambia, Nigeria and Ethiopia, what are the chances of Burkina Faso in this group?

Its hard to say. But I think we must have confidence in ourselves and play according to our abilities. Everyone sees Nigeria and Zambia as favorites of the group. But Burkina can perhaps be the surprise of the championship as Zambia was in 2012.

Everything is possible in football. I would not give statistics, but I need a determined and disciplined team with which I can go far with in this year’s CAN.

In any case, I’m hopefull. But we must be realistic. Nigeria is the second country with the most professional players in the world. There are Nigerians playing in major championships such as in England and Italy. But having individually talented players does not necessarily mean to have a great team.

Zambia is the defending champion. The players are confident and want to prove again that they are talented. Ethiopia is one of the surprise team of the CAN. But they must be respected from the moment they are qualified. I watched the videos of their games and I analyzed their games. I noticed that the Ethiopian players are very fast, are technical and play with a lot of aggression. In terms of their aggressive nature, we will seek to irritate and cause them to commit many mistakes. But this tactic remains to be investigated.

I said earlier that I’m hopeful because we have a good team. Our players are talented and they come back to show what they can do. Already I am sure of one thing, the players want to do better than the last CAN.

Stephen Keshi Nigeria, Herve Renard Zambia. Do you dread their game strategies?

I followed Stephen Keshi and Hervé Renard interviews in which they claimed that the Eagles and Chipolopolo are the two teams that will come top in our group. For them, they do not speak of Burkina Faso or Ethiopia. This is their strategy but I also have mine. I do not want to give details how Burkina Faso will play against these two teams. To them, their own strategies but I’m sure we’ll do better to go beyond the first round.

The Stallions will play friendly matches against Niger and Swaziland. Do you think that these games will allow the players to be ready for the championship?

You should know that preparation matches is one objective we use in measuring the ability of the team. On this level, Niger is at the same level with us, So, choosing to play against Swaziland, we seek a psychological effect. We do not have enough time to play three friendlies as other countries would do, but I think the two games are quite sufficient for our build up.

Since the CAN ’98, Burkina Faso have not passed the first round of the competition. How will you seek to overcome this jinx?

In 1998, Burkina Faso had the advantage of being the host. This is not the case in South Africa. But I notice that the players are very determined to do well. They are talented but they must also have the chance to score and be fit at the right time. All these aspects play in the victory of a team during a match. But the main thing for me is the willingness of players to show their pride being Burkinabes.

Going into the championship, what are your fears?

I fear nothing other than injury. Because it can affect the performance of a team. But we tried to improve the preparation of players. We have strengthened the medical staff with the arrival of a psychologist.

For testing physical conditions, we will use devices (its called Polar) that monitors the heart rate of a player. Then we will know if the player works in the red zone or below his capacity.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Burkinabe Football Federation have it with this unit. In addition to this, we do a check-up for all players to identify those who need nutritional supplements or vitamins in their blood. In South Africa, we will play at an altitude of 1400 meters. Players therefore need 7 to 8 days to adapt. They will also get used to the schedule.

We’ll carry out tests in this direction and also know what they need to boost their form during games. The work is to be done by a doctor in Belgium. We will go with these results to Nelspruit and each player will be treated with doctor’s recommendations.

    • Jan 13, 16 tentative

The Super Eagles’ technical crew has lined up another warm up game for the national team as part of its final preparation for the African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The team’s media officer, Ben Alaiya, who disclosed this in an interview from the team’s camp in Faro, said the team will confront a Portuguese club-side before they depart for South Africa.

Eagles are expected to play Cape Verde in a friendly game today but Alaiya said the technical crew is working round-the-clock to secure a friendly game for Eagles in order to keep them on shape for Africa’s biggest football show piece.

“We are expecting one more game to play before we leave for South Africa. The technical crew told me that they are planning to arrange a game with a club here in Portugal. This will be after the Cape Verde match on Wednesday. The club and date are yet to be confirmed for now but as soon as the date and club is known Nigeria will be well informed,” Alaiya said.

Alaiya also revealed that no specific date has been fixed for the team’s departure to South Africa.

“Well, for now there’s no official date to depart Portugal for South Africa. It has not been finalised. The officials are thinking between January 13 and 16, that is a tentative date for now.”

Nigeria will play in Group C with Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Zambia.

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has described as fake a certain mystery ‘Super Eagles’ list released by an online football website.

The purported Nigeria 23-man AFCON team list published Tuesday by mtnfooball.com advertised the exclusion of Battle of Catalonia hero Bright Dike and Ukrainian League’s Brown Ideye.

The NFF has however warned Nigerians to disregard the list because it is false. The GlassHouse reiterates that the authentic Eagles list will be released after tonight’s friendly against Cape Verde.

The story from the website is reproduced below:

Mtnfootball.com has scooped on Nigeria’s final AFCON squad with Bright Dike and Brown Ideye left out, while Kenneth Omeruo made the cut.

There are also five players from the Nigeria Premier League – goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, defenders Godfrey Oboabona and Azubuike Egwuekwe, midfielder Gabriel Reuben as well as forwards Ejide Uzoenyi and Sunday Mba.

Major League Soccer (MLS) Dike was a major shock after he scored a great goal against Catalonia in a warm-up game last week. So too Dynamo Kiev striker Ideye, who broke his Eagles duck in November in a friendly against Venezuela.

Nigeria U-20 defender Omeruo, who has impressed with Dutch club ADO Den Haag on loan from Chelsea, made the final cut in only his first call-up to the full international team. Otherwise, coach Stephen Keshi has kept faith with the tried and trusted leading up to this month’s AFCON in South Africa.

Nigeria will take on fellow 2013 Nations Cup finalists Cape Verde on Wednesday night in their final warm-up game before the biennial tournament. They are due in South Africa on January 16.

  • NIGERIA VS CAPE VERDE: Judgment day for Yobo

NIGERIA VS CAPE VERDE: Judgment day for Yobo

    • Eagles’captain must perform or…

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed that the Super Eagles’ AFCON list will be released today in Faro, Portugal.

The list will, however, only be made public after the Nigeria versus Cape Verde friendly later tonight, which is the last game that the Stephen Keshi-led technical crew will use to make up its mind on the fitness level of some players.

One such player who is under close scrutiny is Joseph Yobo.

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo recently suffered a knee injury which kept him out of Nigeria’s final 2013 Africa Cup of Nation’s qualifier against Liberia on October 13, 2012.

Executive committee member of the NFF, Barrister Chris Green revealed that Keshi would be closely monitoring the fitness of the Fenerbahce defender in the game against the Blue Sharks on Wednesday.

“I can confirm to you that Joseph Yobo will play in Wednesday’s game against Cape Verde and the coach (Keshi) will use that game to ascertain his (Yobo’s) fitness level as well as the other hopefuls in the list. The good news is that so far, there are no injury worries in the team,” he stated.

Three players, Rabiu Ibrahim, Henry Uche and Papa Idris were dropped by Keshi on Monday while striker, Kalu Uche pulled out of the squad after failing to recover from a groin injury.

Keshi will drop four more players when he announces the final 23-man list today. The deadline for the submission of team sheets of participating teams for the 2013 AFCON is today.

The NFF also had to clarify the situation about the final 23-man list of the national team, the Super Eagles, for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Media chief of the Super Eagles, Ben Alaiya had announced this week that the final list would be released yesterday by head coach, Stephen Keshi.

Green explained that the date was chosen “so as to make clarifications about several issues.”

“We need to make clarifications about several issues. The Super Eagles have a game against Cape Verde on Wednesday and it is only after that game that the list will be announced,” Green exclusively told supersport.com.

The competition gets underway on January 19.

Ballon D’Or: Yobo votes Messi, Keshi picks Toure

Super Eagles skipper, Joseph Yobo picked Lionel Messi as his world player of 2012, while coach Stephen Keshi voted Cote d’Ivoire’s Yaya Toure.

Representing the Nigeria media, top journalist Samm Audu went for Messi, who on Monday won his fourth straight FIFA Ballon D’Or.

MTNFootball.com reports that Messi has also won world football’s foremost individual accolade in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Yobo’s two other nominees were Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazil’s Neymar, while Keshi went for another Ivorian star Didier Drogba and then Netherlands striker Robin van Persie.

Samm Audu’s other picks were Ronaldo and Colombia star Radamel Falcao.

Messi was again a runaway winner for the best player in the world as he polled 41.60 per cent of the total votes, far ahead of second-placed Ronaldo, who recorded 23.68 per cent. Iniesta was third on 10.91 per cent.

The three sections of the eligible voters – national team captains, national coaches and media – all placed the 25-year-old Argentina superstar top of a 23-man strong field.
