Azubuike: We will miss Osaze, Martins

Warri Wolves defender Azubuike Egwueke has admitted that Nigeria will miss Peter Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins at the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa but said the team can still go all the way despite the big-name omissions.

The defender also sees Zambia as the biggest threat to Nigeria in the preliminary stage.

He said: “We are going to miss them but the coach knows why he did not take them. He must have put his confidence on those of us that he chose and it is left for us to make the country proud by doing well in South Africa.

“The foreign-based players are billed to join the team’s camp later in the week and the defender said he is not bothered by the status of any player in the race to get into the final list.

“I’m not scared of any player, mine is to step up my game and work hard and I know with a bit of determination, I can get a shirt in the final list.”

Egwueke paired Joseph Yobo in the central defence during the clash with Liberia in Monrovia and said he was motivated by the experience which he said will enhance his hunger to push for a place in the final list.

Ekpo urges Keshi not to be distracted

Friday Ekpo, a former Super Eagles midfielder, on Saturday urged Coach Stephen Keshi to remain focused on the forthcoming 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) assignment and not get distracted by criticisms.

Ekpo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Keshi needed to stand firm in his task of assembling a formidable squad for the AFCON in South Africa.

He said the Super Eagles coach should pick a squad that would be able to execute his match plans in the field of play in the competition, which would open on Jan. 19.

“Keshi has the right to select whoever he feels should be invited for the Nations Cup. People should stop disturbing him over his choice of players for the team, he should stand his ground in any decision he takes,” he said.

Ekpo, who was a member of the Super Eagles squad that won a bronze medal at the 1992 edition, urged stakeholders to refrain from making unguarded utterances.

“We should not allow this row over players that are supposed to be selected or not selected affect our preparation and performance in South Africa,” he said.

The 2013 AFCON is slated to hold from Jan.19, 2013 to Feb. 10, 2013 in South Africa.

Osaze blames pitch for United loss

Osaze Odemwingie has blamed West Brom’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United on the poor state of the Old Trafford pitch.

The West Brom forward said on his Twitter page that ‘The Baggies’ were unlucky and did not deserve to lose the game.

“Think we deserved more from the game today. Unlucky on first goal. Was a setback. Good second half. Pitch not in good condition at all,” tweeted Odemwingie, who played the full game at United.

“The boys who played 90mins 3 days ago vs QPR on a heavy and wet pitch don’t know how they did same today. Well done. Next home game at The Hawthorns on the 1.01. 2013 is a must win. Need to hang on to the top part of the table.”

    Faro camp: Emenike’s luggage missing

Russia-based strikers Emmanuel Emenike and Ahmed Musa as well as Ogenyi Onazi from Italy have joined the Super Eagles in Portugal.

The three players arrived in the Nigeria AFCON training camp by lunch time on Sunday and were immediately checked into their rooms, with Onazi, explaining that they could have been in earlier but spent time waiting for Emenike’s luggage which did not arrive with the plane from Lisbon to Faro, but will now be expected on this morning’s flight to the Eagles camp site.

After exchanging banters with team officials led by coach Stephen Keshi they joined teammates in having their lunch and just as they were about rounding off, the fourth player to arrive on Sunday, Raheem Lawal, who now plays in the Turkish second division, showed up.

The four players were expected to take part in training yesterday evening, as more players continued to hit camp for the friendly against Catalonia as part of preparations for the Nations Cup.

At the last count, nine foreign-based pros have arrived the Faro training camp.

Keshi had said he expects at least 11 foreign-based players to feature in the friendly against Catalonia on Wednesday.

  • Osaze: I regret attacking Keshi

    Osaze: I regret attacking Keshi

West Bromwich Albion striker, Osaze Odemwingie has attributed his recent outburst against the Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi to anger arising from a feeling of betrayal by the coach.

Odemwingie had in the wake of the release of the team list for AFCON 2013 taken to his Twitter account and made some disparaging comments against the Super Eagles gaffer.

The out-of-favour Super Eagles striker was also reported to have called the chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee, Chris Green ‘names’ over his exclusion from the Eagles’ provisional AFCON squad.

The England-based forward has however realised his mistakes, which were made in a fit of anger because he had already made it known to his coach and colleagues that he was set to travel for the January 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa.

In a no-holds-barred interview, the WBA star surprisingly admitted making some of the comments credited to him, but was also quick to make some clarifications on calling Green ‘names,’ saying what he meant was the decision to exclude him.

He described Green as a good man, and one of the few on the NFF board alongside its president, Aminu Maigari, whom he knows personally, and would not want to offend, though his anger has portrayed him to be at ‘war with everybody’.

Osaze said: ”I remember it was Green that settled my case with Siasia then, but I was too angry when he called me over this matter and was impatient to listen to him, and my comment was not directed at him personally but at those who made the decision, but I think I over reacted then.”

On his face-off with Keshi, the former Locomotiv Moscow forward revealed that: ‘I called the coach two or three times within that period, maybe two or three days before the list was made public and told him of my commitment to be part of the Nations Cup, and had told my coach I would be going to the Nations Cup.

“I told the coach I was ready to report to camp by January third, even before other professionals started reporting to camp, if I was in his programme for the Nations Cup, and even told him to feel free to drop me if I was not in his programme.

“I felt betrayed after that seeming heart-to-heart discussion with the coach few days to the release of the team list and he could not hint me I was not in his plan for the Nations Cup. For me it was not professional and I considered it a betrayal, and lost my cool given all the arrangements I had made towards the Nations Cup”

Odemwingie also revaled that he felt pained and miffed by ‘some comments on why I was dropped ranging from being arrogant to asking for the captain’s band, and I concluded the federation wanted to freeze me out of the national team after ten years of serving the country with commitment and dedication.”

He continued: “I don’t mind being asked to give the younger ones a chance, even though I still have five years to offer at the international level, but I only think it would be proper to be honourably pulled out of the national team and not ‘disgraced’ out of the team after years of dedicated service to Nigeria.”

The WBA star argued that though his international career is over in the light of these controversies, which he noted, ”were unfortunate and regrettable, but I still believe there is need to correct some wrong impressions out there that I am always fighting with every coach; what people don’t know is that my issues with all the coaches from Samson Siasia to Lars Lagerback and now Keshi had to do with purely football matters, not administrative or asking for more money for players.

“My case with coach Siasia dates back to the 2008 Olympics, and had to do with insufficient jersies and all that; with Lagerback it had to do with how I was treated and I voiced it to him personally at the World Cup, and now being treated unfairly. Imagine talking with someone two, three times over an issue and a few days later you begin to hear a different story from the person, who was in a position to tell you point blank ,’you are not in my plan for this’”.

‘I am human and open to error by the way I may have taken the issue, and regret the whole controversy, and want to put all this behind me now and focus on my club career, while wishing the team the best of luck as a Nigerian,” Odemwingie concluded.

  • Moses plays in Chelsea’s win

    Moses plays in Chelsea’s win

With less than 21 days to Nigeria’s opening Group C fixture against Burkina Faso’s Stallions at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Super Eagles ace Victor Moses continues to show signs of a promising outing at the tournament when he played for 17 minutes for Chelsea on Sunday.

Moses, who replaced Hazard in the 73rd minute, failed to add to his last EPL goal tally which he scored in the 1-1 draw against Swansea City in November.

However, Frank Lampard scored twice as Chelsea rallied from conceding an early goal to beating Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Steven Pienaar fired the home side into the lead inside two minutes as he fired a rebound home after Victor Anichebe had headed against the post.

The Toffees nearly doubled their lead shortly afterwards when Nikica Jelavic curled a free-kick against the post as David Moyes’ side continued to press.

But Lampard levelled matters for the visitors three minutes before the break as he headed into the bottom corner from a right-wing Ramires cross.

Jelavic struck the crossbar in the second half with a header but Rafael Benitez’s side showed plenty of resolve and took the lead on 72 as Lampard shovelled home from close range after Tim Howard foiled Juan Mata.

Everton threw everything at Chelsea in the latter stages in a desperate attempt to force an equaliser and maintain their unbeaten home record but the visitors defended brilliantly to see out the win and go third in the table.

  • Mikel still injured

    Mikel still injured

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi could do with a not fully fit John Mikel Obi for Nigeria’s AFCON 2013 campaign as the Chelsea midfielder is still out injured, as Rafael Benitez failed to list him in his 18-man squad who came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Recall Mikel injured his knee injury in the Blues Boxing Day lone goal victory over Norwich at Carrow Road.

SportingLife checks on the rich London club’s team news before the game informed that Mikel is out with a knee injury while is fellow Nigerian teammate Victor Moses will play from the bench. That he did when he came in as a 73rd minute sub for Fernando Torres.

Rafa, who did not give an insight on the nature of Mikel’s injury did admit that he would be missing the services of the Nigerian as he is due to depart for African Cup of Nations duty in the new year.

“David Luiz in midfield is another option. We had a problem with Oriol Romeu injured and John Mikel Obi will go to the African Cup of Nations so we had to find a solution,” he said.

  • NFF member hopes for surprises

    NFF member hopes for surprises

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive member Shehu Adamu believes Nigeria have a better chance in comparison to Zambia’s feat at winning the upcoming Nations Cup in South Africa.

Defender Danny Shittu’s absence means Nigeria can only have five players with experience in the competition but Adamu said the fact that most of the players are unknown puts Nigeria in a good position to surprise their opponents.

Adamu declared: “Having very few players that are known could actually be to our advantage because it’s easier for other countries to underrate our players which will be a big advantage to us.

“Surely, as things stand now, very few of our current players have played in the competition, but remember Zambia equally came to the last edition with average players and we all saw what happened. So, we have a bigger chance than Zambia to surprise any team in the tournament.”

Aside Vincent Enyeama, Austin Ejide, Mikel Obi, Elderson Echiejile and Ike Uche, all other players will be making their debut in the championship.

    Siasia ‘wants’ Kenyan job

Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed interest in the vacant Harambee Stars’ job.

SuperSport.com understands that the tactician would be extremely tempted by an invitation to manage the Stars.

“Managing the Kenyan national team would be an exciting opportunity for me. They have such enormous talent, with players in the local leagues and in Europe. It would not take so long before they become a formidable force in football,” SuperSport.com quoted Siasia as saying on the Kenya’s job.

Kenya plays in the same group as Nigeria in the FIFA 2014 World Cup Qualifiers – both teams will meet on March 22, 2013 in Abuja.

Yobo happy to reach the needy

NIGERIA captain Joseph Yobo has said he was delighted he gave hope to inmates at Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, Surulere, Lagos.

The former Everton star made various donations, from food stuff to a generating set, to the children as part of his giving back to the society through his charity organisation. He said he was touched seeing how the children were happy with the little he gave them. “I was touched with the conditions of the kids. It is sad to know that some of them will still have to die. I am happy to have put a smile on their faces and give them hope to survive. I could have been like any of them but for God’s mercy,” Yobo said. AFCON-bound Yobo also visited the House of Mercy, Ebute Metta, Yaba, which houses mainly Almajiris, and Fair Life Africa foundation Lekki, where he equally made donations.
