  • Katongo warns against Ethiopian complacency

Zambian midfielder Felix Katongo has warned his team mates that Ethiopia will be a tough nut to crack at the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations.

The reigning African Champions will begin their title defence against the Ethiopians on January 21 in Nelspruit and Katongo has called on his team mates not to be complacent.

“We do not need to look at say this is (just) Ethiopia because football nowadays is complicated,” Katongo said.

“You never know what will happen. I will give you an example of Cape Verde; they eliminated Cameroon.”

Ethiopia are returning to the tournament for the first time since 1982 after beating Sudan on away goal rules (5-3, 2-0) to qualify.

  • Togo coach banking on Adebayor

The head coach of Togo’s national team Didier Six hopes to persuade Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor to return to the squad ahead of the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations.

The 28-year is set to miss the tournament which kicks off next month after pulling out of the team due to alleged unpaid match bonuses from their friendly against Morocco last month.

However, the Frenchman believes he can persuade the striker to review his decision and play for his country.

“I am doing everything I can to get him to come back to us,” Six told Le Buteur.

“He’s a world-class player and the Togo national team captain. He is very important to the group. I will put all my strength to get him to change his mind but he has the last word.

“This is about more than just him sending a warning to ensure Togolese football moves forward.”

  • Sport political intrigues

Reflecting about Nigeria Sport and its current state of affairs which is characterized by occasioned inevitable crisis that over time has become a common feature within its circle, I have decided to discuss an area today that have for long eluded most sport critics and experts comments and interest but which if and when properly situated on the balance of its probabilities, have got the capacity to destroy our entire sport programme considering its destructive potential and capacity.

Many from afar may not appreciate the under current that is generated in the sport circle as it is today but the truth is that the current in sport if converted into power will serve Nigeria with uninterrupted power supply for five years without blinking. I have come to observe that of a truth there exist in sport what I classify as “Sport Political Intrigues”. For the purpose of those who have the privilege of studying sociology of sport I am not talking about “Politics in Sport” as may be thought in the class room what I am saying is that this particular sport political intrigue is a perpetual commitment by certain persons or group as the case may be to occasionally and consistently invade into the sporting ecosystem with the intention of cleaning the dice to please their mathematical permutation.

Interestingly a lot of time, energy, consultations, human and material resources including large sums of money are all expended during such political intrigues and yet one is constrained to ask of what benefit is it that we have such multi dimensional political intrigues in our sport environment and till date I have not been able to find an answer to my question.

It has become a vicious cycle and a normal occurrence for us to witness a situation whereby whenever this political intrigue is activated they start first by pretending to the world that they are out to sanitize the sporting sector and their usual bait has always been tired to the slogan “ Corruption “ or “ Misappropriation of fund “.

What is evident however is the commencement or activation of political mechanism that will see to the eventual replacement of current leadership with whoever is the anointed candidate or better put a lucky political son or daughter. I have witnessed in this country a situation whereby innocent sport administrators were labeled as criminals and disgraced out of office all because of sport political intrigues.

The danger in all this which is my primary concern is that overtly or covertly the perpetrators of this scheme are destroying the brand product called sport which they ought to be promoting. They are killing sport yet, they are also seen on the other hand lamenting on lack of adequate or substantial patronage of sport sponsors and partners. Today there is little or no integrity for any Sport Manager this is because word’s going round is simply that they are all thieves that do not have the development of sports at heart. These assertions or statement have been constantly used before some of us ever dreamt of studying Sport Management.

The actual revolution that will see to the eventual development of Sport industry in Nigeria has not started however, if for a mere less than Six (6) Billion Naira which the entire Nigeria Sport Industry can’t claim to generate in a year that we are having this current scenario playing out I then begin to wonder what will the scenario be like if and when the industry can generate over 30Billion Naira which to my mind and understanding is very possible to achieve what then will be happening. I assume by then, most people will start moving around in Bullet proof cars and even wear Bullet proof vests.

The Government as I keep saying have got no business running sport however, their basic and primary role or business as the case may be should basically be limited to regulating and giving policy direction for the entire sport sector in Nigeria. This will open up the space for professional and healthy competition to strive. Meanwhile, government at all levels do have as a duty to ensure that adequate, accessible, standard and well equip sport facilities are developed in Nigeria

Rather than be so worked up in the daily management of sports, and its associated political intrigues peculiar to each sport, it is expedient for government at all strata to improve the operations of sport system thus reducing the practice of political intrigues as been exploited by some due to failed systems and corresponding challenges associated with failed systems. This is achievable when Government decides to change its operational focus by becoming that of a sport regulator with enough powers to develop policy, implement same and sanction where necessary those failing to comply.

I ask all those involved in sport political intrigues what the benefit is when they implore their schemes to blackmail, destroy and petition a sport system all in their attempt to see to a possible change that will favour their political inclination not for the general good of sport but for their selfish interest. I dare say to that these political jobbers are mere parasites of sport system and detractors to the overall development of sport in Nigeria.

Let us as a Nation set aside political acrimony and concentrate on the eventual development of the sporting sector and concentrate our collective effort in rebranding the sport image through a systematic absorption of qualified personnel that will help in actualizing this new thinking in sports world wide. Sport business is a very lucrative business and should not be left in the hands of proponents of sport political intrigues. I wish to use this medium to wish all my readers a Merry Xmas in advance please accept my best sporting regards.

  • Odegbami: Mikel can play like Messi

Odegbami: Mikel can play like Messi

Former Green Eagles ace, Segun Odegbami said on Friday that he is counting on Super Eagles and Chelsea FC midfielder Mikel Obi to perform as Argentine and Barcelona FC striker Lionel Messi, when the 2013 African Cup of Nations gets underway in January.

The former NFF Chairmanship contender explained that he had previously predicted in April that Lionel Messi will be the greatest player the world has ever witnessed and it came to pass even as he equaled and surpassed Gerd Muller’s record for the Highest number of goals scored in a year.

Odegbami said he is now sticking out his neck for the Holland 2005 Silver ball winner to be shine like Messi at the 2013 AFCON tournament in South Africa.

“In April I described Barcelona as the greatest team in history and Lionel Messi as the greatest player. Eight months later and at 25, with years still left in his feet and goals in his boots, Messi has already re-written football history. At the last count he has scored, arguably, more goals in one football season than anyone else in history, recalled the one time conqueror of African football.

“Thoughts of him bring up the second thing on my mind – Afcon 2013.What has Lionel Messi got to do with Africa’s greatest football show? The answer is Mikel Obi, the Nigerian defensive midfield player making his mark quietly in the colours of Chelsea and the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

“Several years ago Messi and Mikel, both 18 years old at the time, competed on the same stage for who would be the best young player in the world. That epic battle was fought at the 2005 World Youth Championship in Holland.

“Messi and Mikel both featured at their national under-20 teams to the championship. Argentina and Nigeria met at the finals in an encounter that provided a sneak preview of the future. On the night, Argentina won with two moments of magic provided by Lionel Messi.

“Since then both players have charted different paths, only meeting again at the 2011/2012 season in the semifinal of the European Club Championships, where Mikel and Chelsea had the upper hand over Messi and Barcelona in terms of the final result.

“There is increasing expectation and mounting pressure by Nigerians for the Super Eagles to win Afcon 2013.

“That’s where Mikel comes in. Nigerians are counting on him playing at his best again these days, to use his vast experience and leadership to lead Nigeria’s onslaught, Odegbami highlighted.

“The man is getting used to winning championships. There is something about Mikel that is special and confounding.

“He brings all of that to the Super Eagles. With his quiet mien and conservative but consistent performances, Mikel Obi could just be the joker up the sleeve with which Nigeria can win the African championship. He is on my mind,” explained Odegbami.

  • Fans to get advanced security tickets

With 27 days to the kick-off of the African Cup of Nations 2013 in South Africa, the South African Trade and Industry Department has warned soccer fans and members of the public to look out for special features of the tournament ticket to avoid purchasing fakes.

“The tickets contain advanced and extensive security features to ensure authenticity and to avert counterfeits,” it said

The department Thursday said scams were often prevalent during events such as the AFCON and other championships, adding it will be in the interest of fans to verify their tickets before parting with their money. Aside from tickets other areas that attract the fancy of scams include accomodation arrangement.

The department regretted that custormers sometimes could not tell the difference between valid and accredited ticket suppliers from fake suppliers, often paying large amounts of money for fake tickets.

“These scams may typically relate to sale of tickets, offering of hospitality packages or provision of affordable accommodation during the AFCON 2013.

“Valid match tickets can only be acquired from approved service providers. Consumers are warned not to purchase match tickets from sources that are not accredited by AFCON 2013,” the department said.

EQ Tickets was appointed the exclusive ticket provider for AFCON, in conjunction with Spar stores and T & I department is increasing campaign calling on socccer lovers to acquire tickets only via the EQ Tickets website, kiosks or call centres, plus Spar and Super Spar stores.

The department further urged the public to blow the whistle on any scams they may come into contact with. Complaints could be lodged with the National Consumer Commission.

The tournament will take place between January 19 and February 10 with games held in Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit and Durban.
