Ugbe backs open National Sports Festival

Patrick Ugbe, the Cross River State Commissioner for Sports, has described the proposal to throw subsequent editions of the, National Sports Festival (NSF) open to elite athletes as a welcome development. Ugbe made this remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

NAN reports that, Bolaji Abdullahi, the Minister of Sports had made this known during the opening ceremony of the concluded 18th NSF in Lagos. The commissioner stressed the need for a replication of an Olympic style competition; in the country’s sports development itinerary.

“It’s a good decision; we need to have a festival that is like our own Olympics. If we want to discover qualitative athletes from the NSF that would represent the country creditably at the Olympics; then we should throw it open.

“Such a development will bring out the best from our local athletes, knowing that they would be competing against elite athletes, and strive to give them a run for their money. The participation of our foreign based athletes in the sports festival, will add glamour to it, and inspire all the competitors to work harder,’’the commissioner said.

NAN reports that Cross River will host the 19th edition of the NSF tagged “Paradise Games’’ in 2014.

FIFA Club World Cup: Moses laments: I thought I’d scored

Super Eagles ace, Victor Moses said he thought he had salvaged the night for himself and his mates when he tried to score for Chelsea in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final decided at the International Stadium Yokohama, as the UEFA Champions League winners lost via a lone goal to Corinthians of Brazil

The Nigerian, from the blast of the whistle, gave Rafa Benitez’s side a little more muscle and pace up front, and had one of Chelsea’s best chances of the night. In the dying moments of the first half, he broke through the Brazilians’ defence and curled a nasty shot toward the top corner. Much to his surprise, Corinthians’ net-minder Cassio sprawled like a cat to parry the ball away.

“I thought the ball was going in and I was ready to run off and celebrate. But he’s a tall keeper, he went full-stretch and pulled off a fantastic save.” These were the words of Chelsea’s Nigeria international Victor Moses, describing his dart into the box from the left-hand side and subsequent deft curling shot, which was headed for the corner of the net before the intervention of Corinthians’ custodian Cassio.

“We had chances Sunday night,” Victor Moses told FIFA.com, the muffled songs of tens of thousands of jubilant Corinthians fans ringing out in the distance. “But it’s just one of those nights when the other team’s keeper had a blinder.”

“I couldn’t believe it. He had a really great day and made some good saves,” added the Blues’ attacker to FIFA.com. And that was indeed the case. In pulling off a string of important stops, O Timão’s man between the sticks put in an unforgettable performance, a ‘thou shalt not pass’ display that played a significant role in his club’s second FIFA Club World Cup title.

“We’re professional footballers, after all,” he said, victorious Corinthians players filing past behind him. “We’ll get ourselves back to where we need to be mentally. We had a bad day today; things didn’t go our way. We’ll put it behind us.

  • Voices from CBAAC cultural fest

In line with its tradition, the Centre for Black and African Arts and Cilvilisation (CBAAC) recently held its annual festival of culture celebrating children and as has become customary, the event featured an exhibition of artworks from schools across Lagos State.

Beaming light on the important role of children in sustainable development in the country the event integrates Nigerian children with the cultural heritage of the country while simultaneously showcasing the artistic ingenuity of the children via the exhibition.

The art exhibition, which was unveiled by CBAAC’s Director, Professor Tunde Babawale, spoke the voices of school children as regards the current state of events in the country. Touching on everything from security challenges, religion to cultural associations down to human anatomy, the exhibition portrays the Nigerian child as aware of the happenings in his surroundings, a far cry from the notion that the ivory towers are falling.

The Politics of Religious Terrorism, a painting by Ayeni Emmanuel, a student of Navy School, Ojo captures the battle for survival the average Nigerian experiences. It has been argued that religion is a tool used by politicians to perpetuate themselves in office while throwing the attention of the masses away from fundamental issues. Ayeni lends his voice to this argument with the work done with poster colour.

Aptly titled, he captures four politicians from different ethnicity, based on their dress code, united in crucifying an already emaciated looking Nigerian. On the sideline, the painting also portrays a crop of politicians united in fleecing the country of its wealth while ethnic division flourishes at the grassroots.

In a similar vein, Abioye Benita Adeola, also of Nigerian Navy School, Ojo reflects on the security challenge especially in the in the Northern part of the country via the artwork, Fearful Worship. She comes up with a burning house of worship with littered corpses and frightened people. In her own way, she tells the story of a people who can no longer seek peace where it is found. Other artworks on display include Bata Drummers, Human Kidney, One Nation; Many Problems as well as Egun Ngbachi (Moon Dance)

Chaired by Chief (Mrs) Opral Benson and themed Beauty in Diversity, Celebrating Creativity, the event was held at the Exhibition Hall of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. Speaking at the event, Professor Tunde Babawale said the programme was organised yearly to facilitate interaction between children from diverse socio-cultural and economic backgrounds. “Our choice of this time of the year to bring children together for this celebration is our unique way of giving thanks to the Almighty, our creator, for his mercies and benevolence during this year that is gradually winding up. At this programme today, we are here not only to celebrate and enjoy the various compliments this season brings, we are also here to imbue and inculcate in our children the values inherent in and the beauty of African culture.”

  • ‘Nigerians have problems with spelling’

Spelling is the bedrock of literacy. In this report, Rotimi Eyitayo, initiator of the Teammasters Spelling Bee competition, speaks to Joe Agbro Jr. on the need for good spellers among students

In existence for four years, the Teammasters Spelling Bee is an English Spelling Competition that has been designed for students between the ages of 7 and 17 years across primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools. And this year’s edition, the fifth in the series, will feature in 10 states in Nigeria as well as three countries.

The Initiator of the programme is Rotimi Eyitayo, a business consultant, skewed towards Project Management and Process Improvement and who has worked with corporate organisations, religious bodies, schools as well as individuals. With a passion for education, he has facilitated programmes within and outside Nigeria, one of which is the just concluded Gemstone Global Reading Festival that happened in 17 cities in Nigeria and 17 countries across the world simultaneously. Others include the Nigerian Schools Conference which brings together school heads across the nation, the Student Enrichment Seminar and of course, The Teammasters Spelling Bee.

Expressing concern over the nation’s reading culture, Eyitayo said, ‘I really believe that Nigerian students and adults as well have problems with spelling. This can be attributed to the fact that the reading culture has gone very low and with the emergence of abbreviations and code words. The average Nigerian student would rather use shorthand and abbreviations to express himself.’

According to Eyitayo who registered Teammasters Limited in 2006 to create and add value to schools, students, teachers, and parents, ‘the competition has been structured to help promote literacy in Nigeria but most of all to develop students’ use of the English vocabulary and spelling skills. Each stage of the competition (District level – State Finals – National Finals and Awards) has been observed to help build spellers’ confidence and competitive skills as well.

Over 500 schools had participated in previous editions of the spelling bee, but, for this edition, Eyitayo said he expects 2, 000 schools to participate in the competition.

And the star prize winner of the spelling bee gets an opportunity to be the US Consul General for a day.

Coordinators of winning students as well as their schools will also receive prizes and all participating students and coordinators will also get certificates of participation.

He said, “over the years, feedbacks from participated schools were that an incredible difference was noticed in the academic performance of spellers who participated in the competition.”

On what motivates him , Eyitayo says: “The desire to engage students in a unique way and simultaneously develop the educational sector, thereby creating leverage for both primary and secondary schools (private and public) to build confidence, improve on their vocabulary and thereby acquiring life skills.”

Obviously, the magnitude of the programme does not intimidate Eyitayo as he said, “our team has been able to position the competition for better participation and acceptance by the general public.” Appealing to sponsors, he, however said: “We still seek for sponsors and organisations that are willing to support this cause.”

Apart from helping students “to build confidence, improve on their vocabulary and thereby acquiring life skills,” Eyitayo says it is the desire of Teammasters to “showcase the best we have and win in every endeavour at all cost.”

  • Greg Etafia joins PSL legends

    Greg Etafia joins PSL legends

IT IS unusual for a foreign goalkeeper to spend a decade at a club.

That is a feat Nigerian goalkeeper, Greg Etafia, has achieved at Premier Soccer League (PSL) side, Moroka Swallows.

Soweto has been the home of Etafia since August 2002 after arriving from Nigerian side, Plateau United as a teenager to replace former Nigerian international, Idah Peterside.

Etafia, who was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the football event of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, has not only spent a decade at PSL side, Moroka Swallows, but is set to hit a legendary figure in the PSL history.

Although he played for only two clubs in Nigeria, Etafia has become a one-club player in the PSL.

It is a remarkable achievement for a goalkeeper.

With 299 starts for the “Beautiful Birds,” the former U-17 and U-23 goalkeeper will join Bidvest Wits midfielder, Tinashe Nengomasha, as the only second player still active in the Premiership to reach the milestone of 300 games for one club, if he takes to the field against Bloemfontein Celtic, today.

Etafia becomes the second Nigerian after former Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Willy Okpara, who achieved the feat at Orlando Pirates.

Okpara, who won the CAF Champions League with Pirates in 1995 is now a goalkeeper coach at the club.

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP FINAL MIKEL BOASTS: Chelsea’ll be too hot for Corinthians

MIKEL OBI has predicted that Chelsea current form will get them past Brazil’s Corinthians to win the Club World Cup today.

Chelsea will battle South American champions Corinthians in today’s final in Yokohama, Japan, and the Nigeria international midfielder told MTNFootball.com his club have the class to beat the Brazilians to the trophy.

Chelsea beat Monterrey of Mexico 3-1 in the semi-final, while Corinthians beat African champions Al Ahly 1-0 to reach the final.

“We are here for business and that is to win the Club World Cup and write another history,” declared Mikel, who in May helped the London club win a first-ever UEFA Champions League at Bayern Munich.

“This is our first appearance in the competition and we are in the final. I am sure we will win the trophy by beating Corinthians.

“They are South American champions and they are good but with our recent form, I am optimistic and believe we will beat them to lift the trophy.”

After a tough start by new manager Rafael Benitez, ‘The Blues’ thrashed Danish champions FC Nordsjaelland before they crushed Sunderland 3-1 in the English Premier League.

This will be Benitez third final. In 2005, he led Liverpool to lose 1-0 to another Brazilian club Sao Paulo, but made amends in 2010 when his Inter Milan trounced African kings TP Mazembe 3-0.

    Adepoju: I left 3SC a sad man

FORMER 3SC General Manager Mutiu Adepoju has stated that he was disappointed to have quit the four-time Nigerian champions declaring he left the club a sad man.

Adepoju’s four-year reign as the supremo of the Oluyole Warriors experienced series of battles which reached a boiling point at a period when he was reportedly sacked only for news to resurface that he is back at the club which puts him on a win-and-get-paid condition.

“I came to Shooting Stars with a big dream; to get the club to the top position which they are known for but so many things which i can not say on air hindered my plan. It was very painful and I have to leave the club in disappointment; I left there a sad man.”

He however, backed the club to make an appreciable impact next season declaring that the club would have finished in a more respectable position were it not for the effect of the last-minute expulsion of Ocean Boys’ which scuttled the club’s outside chance of earning a continental ticket.
