    Rangers turn back Victor Ezeji

Enugu Rangers will not sign veteran striker Victor Ezeji for the coming league season.

The 31-year-old Ezeji, who last season featured for Sharks, has been training with Rangers with a view to signing for the ‘Flying Antelopes’.

“Rangers will not sign Ezeji,” an official informed MTNFootball.com.

Ezeji, who was top scorer of the NPL in 2002, did not feature in Rangers training on Wednesday morning.

The striker, who has featured for several clubs including Enyimba as well as Club Africain in Tunisia, was capped by Nigeria eight years ago.

Rangers have already rejected another experienced campaigner Ezenwa Otorogu, who is now training with Heartland.

MTNFootball.com has learnt that Rangers plan to register a total of 35 players for the coming season with Warri Wolves stars Chigozie Agbim and Sunday Mba as well as Enyimba skipper Josiah Maduabuchi still part of their plans despite media speculations to the contrary.

Ghana to name Nations Cup squad today

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will announce his Africa Cup of Nations squad today at a press conference.

MTNFootball.com understands a provisional list of 25 players will be named for the team’s pre-tournament camping in Abu Dhabi.

The local media have in the past weeks speculated which players will be included and some major casualties.

AC Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari, who returned to training on Tuesday after a six-month injury lay-off, could be overlooked.

Defender John Mensah is on the verge of being snubbed after failing to find a club since terminating his contract with Olympique Lyon in June.

Berekum Chelsea midfielder Solomon Asante could be the only out-field locally-based player to make the squad.

Ghana are in Group B against DR Congo, Niger and Mali at the tournament which runs from 19 January to 10 February.

    Rangers ponder ACL opponents’ style

Enugu Rangers’ defensive midfielder, Ugonna Uzochukwu has said their CAF Champions League preliminary round opponents, SC Do Principe of Sao Tome & Principe will not pose a hard nut to crack.

The African football body on Monday handed the Coal City side a relatively fair opposition to kick-start their African title chase.

Uzochukwu, who claimed the Sao Tome foes are completely strange, said the Flying Antelopes will aim to win convincingly at home.

“We don’t have faintest knowledge of the Sao Tome & Principe foes, and their name is strange. We’re going ahead with our preparations hoping that after we host them in Enugu we’ll know something about them before the second leg.

“So playing at home first appears to work in our favour as we’re determined to win convincingly at least to make the second fixture a mere formality. My teammates are in top shape and rearing to go. We’re engaging top sides in tune-up matches to build up our morale and confidence going into the encounter,” said the Super Eagles right full back to supersport.com.

Uzochukwu assured that his side will give Nigerians good representation at the continent.

“We’re not in the continent to make up the numbers but to challenge for the title. Nigerians should be rest assured we won’t disappoint,” he said.

Rangers will host the visitors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu at the weekend of February 15 and 17 while the return leg holds in fortnight in Sao Tome & Principe.

Eaglets’ glory days are here — Ugbade

Uduka Ugbade, the Assistant Coach of the Golden Eaglets, has said that the team’s technical crew will re-organise it for better performance.

Ugbade told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that the re-organisation would be carried out before the commencement of the 2013 African Youth Championship in Morocco. He said the team would play some friendly matches with local and foreign teams to get the right balance.

“In fact, as part of the preparation and build up to the U-17 championship, we are already playing friendly matches with local and foreign sides to build a strong team,’’ he said over the telephone.

The coach added that 35 players had been penciled for the task ahead, and that each player had to compete for a slot in the team.

“Through the friendly matches we have lined up, we should be able to select our final set of players to represent the country in Morocco next year. We want to use this championship to make up for the disappointment of not qualifying for the last three editions,’’ Ugbade said.

Ugbade, who captained the 1985 Golden Eaglets squad that won the FIFA U-17 Championship in China, called on the Nigeria Football Federation to adequately support the team.

Nigeria will play in Group B alongside Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana in the April 13 to April 27 championship.

  • ‘Boxing lived up to its thrills, controversies’

‘Boxing lived up to its thrills, controversies’

Although the boxing event of the 18th National Sports Festival (NSF) ended on Dec. 7, the sport provided some memorable showdowns that will dominate national discourse for some time to come, as Nigerians appraise the just-concluded biennial Games.

The event featured many colourful boxers from various states across the federation, particularly Apampa Muri from Borno and Gabriel Francis of Lagos. Apampa won most of his bouts via knock outs until the finals, where he lost his match to Ademola Najeem of Ogun in a tough encounter that lived up to its top rating.

Francis, on the other hand, another tough fighter, who was quick with his deadly punches, never dropped his guard until he settled for the ultimate prize – the gold medal.

In all, however, Lagos State boxers proved hard nuts to crack as they remained the team to beat as the team notched up eight gold medals in both the men and women’s categories, at the finals.

Ogun was adjudged the second best to Lagos after winning seven gold and two silver medals, to stamp their strength and technical prowess in the competition.

Above all, some of the bouts were, however, hit by brick bats of controversies as spectators and team officials expressed disappointment at some `controversial’ decisions of some judges in the course of the competition.

Looking back at the competition, Hakeem Idris, a spectator, expressed displeasure at some of the final decisions, saying that some of the decisions could not have been the true reflection of what the outcomes of the bouts actually were.

“It is sad that an event like this can be marred by questionable decisions. Some of the bouts were indeed thrilling, no doubt, but the balance of fair play was largely missing in some of the bouts,” he said.

Obinna Eze, a fan of Team Abia, expressed disappointment with the judges following Abia’s Okebugwu Flora’s 1-2 loss to Olaniyi Bola of Ogun, in one of the most controversial women’s bouts.

“This is a major event – a festival. We can’t keep on allowing such things happen haphazardly and claim we want to get it right at the Olympics. Flora clearly won and everyone knew it,” he said.

However, Abiodun Obanla, Head Coach from Ondo State, described the officiating generally as fair, but noted that as humans, “errors are inevitable in Games of this magnitude, where passion can sometimes come into play”.

The coach, who is also a referee, admitted that although some decisions were not right, they were mistakes that were bound to happen sometimes in boxing.

“In my opinion, it is unfortunate that not everybody will want to accept such costly errors at such crucial stages, given what was at stake – a gold, a silver and a bronze, plus some cash rewards (in some states).

“Sometimes it can be a lack of concentration of the part of judges. It can be a result of poor knowledge by the referees or even that of an athlete. But these mistakes can sometimes prove costly. Some decisions were not right but these are some of the errors that come with officiating; they’re not intentional,” he explained.

Aside from the flaws and controversies that dogged the officiating, many of the men and women’s boxing bouts were without doubt thrilling, raising hopes about the future of the sport, particularly at the amateur level.

The fierce and fearless displays, the gusts and thrills of boxers kissing the canvas, as well as the drama of throwing in the towel from corner men turned out to be the high points of some of the bouts.

In the end, a total of 20 gold medals were won in both the men and women’s categories of boxing at the festival. It is only time that will tell if the efforts, time and money spent in staging the Games had been worth it.

Ideye: I won’t rest during vacation

Dynamo Kiev star Brown Ideye has ruled out the possibility of going on a vacation during the winter break.

Ideye and his Kiev team mates are currently on break from club activities until January 10, 2013 but the 24-year-old striker intends to use the period to build up his stamina level in view of next year’s challenges.

The Nigerian in an interview on Dynamo Kiev’s official website disclosed that he’s making no plans for vacation despite the fact that his team mates have all lined up vacation activities for the winter break.

“Honestly, I do not plan to rest. I need to keep fit and get ready for club and country activities next year.

CAF exco post Maigari seeks to replace Adamu

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Aminu Maigari will contest for a place on the CAF executive committee next year.

According to CAF, Maigari is one of three candidates who will seek to replace outgoing Amos Adamu at next year’s ordinary general assembly. The other candidates to contest against Maigari are Benin FA boss Anjorin Moucharafou and his Niger counterpart, Hima Souley.

Maigari is on his second-term on the executive committee of the NFF. The vacancy is for West Africa B, which has Benin, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Togo, Burkina Faso and Niger.

CAF president Issa Hayatou is the only candidate for his position at the next general assembly, while South Africa’s Danny Jordan will again attempt to get on the CAF board after he failed to do so previously.

  • Martins gets Eagles’ second chance

    Martins gets Eagles’ second chance

Top officials have revealed striker Obafemi Martins has played his way back into the Eagles with his goals in the Spanish La Liga.

Martins, who played his first Eagles game under coach Stephen Keshi in last month’s friendly against Venezuela, was widely speculated to have missed out on the AFCON on the back of an indifferent showing against Venezuela.

“We know he didn’t have the best of outings against Venezuela, but since after that game he has proved that he still has that killer instinct in front of goal with goals for Levante. He is therefore very much part of Keshi’s plans for the AFCON,” a top team official informed MTNFootball.com.

At the weekend, ‘Obagoal’ strengthened his claim for a place on the Eagles squad when he netted his sixth goal for Levante. He has also provided six assists as his club climb up the standings.

This is a sharp departure from a few months ago when Martins’ first-team appearances for Russian club Rubin Kazan were limited due to loss of form and injuries. However, the top team official maintained no player, whether based at home or abroad, is guaranteed an automatic shirt to next year’s Nations Cup.

“For the records, no player whether at home or abroad is guaranteed a shirt. They must prove themselves as we begin camping next week,” he warned.
