Keshi picks Sidney Sam for Kenya

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has reiterated his desire to have former Germany youth international Sidney Sam in the Super Eagles side in March 2013.

Sam, 24, who plays for Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, was born to a German mother but his father comes from Lagos. He has not played for Germany at full international level, so is eligible to play for Nigeria – but he is waiting for world governing body to approve his nationality switch.

Sam has already been ruled out of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, but Keshi is keen to have him available for the World Cup qualifier against Kenya.

“I’ve taken all the necessary steps to get Sidney Sam into the right frame of mind,” Keshi told BBC Sport.

“I’m looking at the game against Kenya at home in March, it will be perfect to introduce him to our passionate fans on home soil – that’s my desire. “It’s possible because the Nigerian Football Federation is also working hard to ensure he gets the needed clearance from FIFA. I know it might be a tough ask – considering our next game will be in June against the same opponent – so we remain optimistic.

“When you watch him play and see what he has to offer then you will understand why we want him to play for Nigeria. With that in mind, our immediate attention as a team shifts to the Nations Cup in South Africa.”

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles are set to arrive in Faro, Portugal on the 27 December to prepare for the Nations Cup.

Officials are confident they will get key players available for the friendlies against Catalonia and Angola in January. Nigeria begin their Nations Cup campaign against Burkina Faso on 21 January and then face Zambia and Ethiopia in Group C.

  • Moses: Torres is the best

    Moses: Torres is the best

For many soccer fans, Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has not justified the big money spent on him from Liverpool to Stamford Brigde but for Nigerian forward Victor Moses the Spaniard is the best player he has ever played against.

In an interview with discover.adidas.co.uk the Nigerian international was emphatic that Torres is the best player he has played against.

“I’m going with Fernando Torres – he’s a great striker. Moses responded when asked who the best player he has played against is.

Only on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League El-Nino showed some flashes of what made him one of the most feared strikers before now as he netted a brace in Chelsea’s 6-1 demolition of their Danish opponent.

Sadly the brace wasn’t enough for Chelsea to continue their defense of the Champions League as they will now campaign in the Europa League.

  • Mikel won’t appeal FA ban

    Mikel won’t appeal FA ban

Mikel Obi will not appeal FA sanctions in the stormy aftermath of Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat against Manchester United in October.

The Chelsea midfielder was handed a three-match ban and £60,000 fine for threatening referee Mark Clattenburg after the match.

It means he will miss the Premier League fixtures against Sunderland and Aston Villa, as well as the Capital One Cup quarter-final against Leeds United.

However, Mikel, who signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea on Wednesday, will still be available to play in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan next week.

Chelsea are well aware that players have been suspended for much longer for serious abuse against an official and, following a personal hearing, there is a sense of relief that the Football Association’s regulatory commission accepted the mitigation that was put forward for Mikel’s behaviour.

Mikel had been told by Ramires, his team-mate, that Clattenburg had referred to him as a ‘monkey’ during the game, prompting the subsequent confrontation and threat in the referee’s office.

Clattenburg has since been cleared by both the police and the FA of the Ramires allegation, but the commission did also believe that Mikel genuinely thought he had been racially abused when he made his threat.

But for that mitigating factor, Mikel’s ban would have been “significantly longer”.

Mikel admitted to the commission that he had used threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour in the official’s changing room at the end of the game and quickly decided on Thursday to accept his punishment.

  • Clandestine sport cabal

Today am troubled about the way our sport is been strangulated by a group of people who have nothing to contribute in the development nor advancement of sport in Nigeria these group have so far desecrated the sport scene and have over time polluted the entire sporting environment. They like their numerous supporters have no ambition in developing sport rather they are out with the mission to destroy the polity for their selfish interest. They are called the Clandestine Sport Cabal or in some quarters Sport Stakeholders.

This clandestine group have all been responsible for the numerous maneuvering and disruption of the overall sport development agenda however, it is regrettable to note that they are most often used by some interested parties who see their clinch to power as a means of survival rather than the use of same power for the advancement and eventual development of sport in Nigeria

Many a times we have crisis in one sport institution or the other and you see or hear people calling for a stakeholders meeting to address the problems created by these clandestine sport cabal who parade themselves as sport stakeholders. It may interest you to know that in an attempt to look at the meaning of stakeholder, I have come to the logical finding that these persons are not in any way close to been regarded as sport stakeholders because by all intent and purposes they have got no stake in sport.

Another matter of great concern to me is the way and manner that these group have been able to sustain their grip of power and influence in the sporting arena they are always seen and even heard the loudest at every controversial sport discuss they champion various crusade in the name of reforming the sport sector but they are never interested in the absolute liberation of the sector from the stronghold of their wimps and caprices they are what you refer to as general bad news

Their survival is comparable to that of the wild beast that has to devour other animals to feed and any obstacle between them and their food is met with great resistance that has the propensity to destroy all that has been tenaciously labored for over the years. Surprisingly, a union exist between these group and some sport managers who are visionless and without any interest in the development of sport in Nigeria they use these group to cause all sorts of distraction in Nigeria Sports

The need for sport to be salvaged from the claws of these clandestine sport cabal who are destined for the outright destruction of sport in Nigeria is now because we need to raise the standards and properly define who a sport stakeholder should be rather than have people parading themselves as sport stakeholders without any stake whatsoever in sport.

Posterity will judge any sport manager that engages the services of these groups to destroy the much desired sport industry which by my assessment has not taken off yet but still been dragged to the ground by a group that is only interested in subverting the interest of the general good of all. This dastardly act must be condemned, discouraged and denounced in its entirety.

While appreciating the need for there to be genuine stakeholders in sport those who for obvious reasons are committed to the development and overall advancement of sport in Nigeria. It is expedient that we expunge all those who have got nothing to contribute to the development of sport in Nigeria. Enough of the stories or what I call distorted historical concoction by a group of people without any historical relevance because they are very quick to take you down memory lane of woes and failures.

You may be wondering the reason for all I have been saying but the fact is that the truth must be told and the crux of the matter is that while some people have got no other place to go than to remain in sport business because it is their profession these clandestine stakeholders are actually not sport practitioners hence, they can easily and quickly recline to their original calling if they still have any as soon as they are through with destroying the sport sector

We need to confront this category of non- stakeholders and destroyers of sport system in Nigeria most times they claim to have all the answers and solutions to the Nigeria Sport problem and most of their claims are not founded nor supported by empirical evidence rather they are always mere conjunction of distorted thoughts of persons whose entire intention is to get whatever they can lay their hands upon.

It is high time for the various sport practitioners and genuine sport stakeholders to be bold enough to confront these people and chase them out of the system before they will eventually destroy the system. Once this is done then we can be sure of having a focus for our sport development plan and channel our resources towards the actualization of this plan rather than servicing the appetite of this group.

May I also reiterate the fact that although sport is regarded in some quarters as an all comers event it should not be a dumping ground for those who have failed in their chosen career and who now pretentiously parade themselves as been more interested in the development of sport than those whose entire existence is dependent on the successful take off of the sport industry in Nigeria

We need to encourage genuine sport stakeholders to come on board people who can invest their money, expertise, time and other things necessary towards repositioning the Nigeria Sport Industry rather than have sport parasites destroy the foundation of sport development in Nigeria as a result of their selfish interest. Also, we need to be cautious of those we appoint or elect to help drive the sport development agenda in Nigeria and I maintain that we have more than abundant qualified personnel to be engaged for these purposes of sport reengineering in Nigeria let us stop patronizing these Clandestine Sport Cabal who call themselves sport stakeholders but lack any stake in sport.

  • Team Rivers edge out Team Lagos to reach basketball final

Rivers’ men basketball team, has defeated Team Lagos by 65 to 58 in the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival, “Eko 2012”.

By the defeat, Team Lagos has lost the chance to play in the final of the competition. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the match witnessed several interruptions by angry fans during the fourth quarter when Team Lagos was down by 10 points.

This development forced the officials to stop the game for 20 minutes in last period of the game. Team Rivers Coach Fubara Oyenabor expressed delight on the outcome of the result saying that he was confident that his team would outscore Team Lagos as soon as the game started.

“I am happy we have reached the basketball final as defending champions, now we have a chance to prove that we are no pushovers in basketball.

“Team Lagos and its fans should be able to accept defeat when it comes, the sports festival is to bring people together and not for war,’’ Oyenabor said.

In his reactions, Team Lagos Coach Mark Balogun told NAN that his boys lost the game due to loss of concentration and fatigue.

“We lost concentration from the beginning and we could not recover when Team Rivers was leading in the first quarter with 11 points gap.

“Our three-point shooter could not convert the necessary baskets and we also lost several free throw points that could have changed the course of the game.

“We will play for bronze and hope to win in our next match,’’ Balogun said.

Rivers will play Oyo in final while Lagos meets Plateau for the bronze medal.

However, the Lagos women basketball team defeated their counterparts from Delta by 51-43 in a well contested game.

Coach Adewunmi Aderemi said he was delighted with the result and promised to win the gold medal.

“We have reached the final, which is our ultimate aim. We played against a good team today that exposed most of our weaknesses. `We will surely work on this and ensure that we win the gold medal,’’ Aderemi said.

In other fixtures, Oyo beat Plateau by 59-55 while Rivers trounced FCT by 52-45 to book a place in the final.

  • 3 swimmers set new records

Three swimmers have set new National Sports Festival records at the ongoing 18th edition of the Games tagged “Eko 2012’’, an official of the Nigeria Swimming Federation (NSF) said on Friday.

NSF national coach Monsuru Obadina told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the new record holders were Victoria Ajakaye of Edo, Akina Kpiliboh of Ondo State and Kinsley Forcados from Delta.

“For now, three swimmers have set new festival records, a male and two females, and we are still hoping to get more before the competition ends on Saturday (today),’’ Obadina said.

He told NAN that Ajakaye set a new record of 31:30 secs as against 31:34 secs of 1991 in the women 50m butterfly.

Kpiliboh, he said, also set a record of 1:02:66 secs against 1:03:72 of 2007 in 100m freestyle for women.

Obadina further said that Forcados set his own record of 2:20:94 against 2:22:46 of 2008 in the 200m individual medley for men.

The coach said the three swimmers had been outstanding in their performances since the beginning of the swimming competition at the sports fiesta.

He also said the standard of swimming was higher than in the 2011 Games tagged “Garden City Games’’ in Port Harcourt, adding that this edition was highly competitive.

“The standard of this competition is higher than that of the last edition, but I am happy that three swimmers have broken the old records,’’ Obadina said.

He said that 10 good swimmers, including six males and four females, had been identified for further grooming.

Obadina said the federation was impressed with the young athletes who were participating in the competition, noting that they were swimmers who would win laurels for the country in future.

  • ‘Squash is regaining its prominence’

The Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) on Friday commended players and officials participating in the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival (NSF) for working to enhance the profile of the sport.

Femi Ajagbe, the federation’s president, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the resurgence being experienced in the sport would be sustained beyond the NSF.

Ajagbe added that squash had once more attracted the attention of some notable stakeholders who had previously adopted a lukewarm approach to the activities of the federation at the NSF.

“There is more awareness now for the sport, which is attracting stakeholders. Next year will be a better year for squash as this year is ending on a good note with the sports festival.

“Our objective is to sustain the passion these players and officials have and to turn that passion into success; our federation is going to do everything humanly possible to get squash to its peak.

“With the way our players are now, with more regular competitions and exposure, we will be a force to be reckoned with internationally,’’ he said.

The president also said that newly-discovered talents from the sports fiesta would be systematically groomed and exposed to the right kind of competitions that would sharpen their competitive edge.

“We are going to take them into camp and provide them with all they need to succeed. I am optimistic that we will get the desired results at the end of the day.

“This festival has proved to me that the country abounds with budding talents. So many young players have been discovered and we know that given the right training, they will soar,’’Ajagbe added.

  • Plateau, FCT claim men/women’s basketball bronze

The Men’s Basketball teams from Plateau and the FCT on Friday emerged the bronze medals winners, respectively, at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Team Plateau defeated hosts Team Lagos, 50-49, while FCT outplayed Team Delta, 66-58, to claim the bronze medals. The bronze medallists Plateau and FCT in their matches came from behind to snatch the medals in the events held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Hall, Lagos.

Team Lagos was leading at 32-16, but later succumbed to the wilful power of Team Plateau and lost its bid to win the bronze. Team FCT also came from a 10-point gap in the second quarter of the match to overcome Team Delta, before maintaining the lead all through the rest of the game to claim the bronze.

Team Plateau Coach, Jacquiline Niagwan, attributed his team’s victory to hard work and determination, saying that Team Lagos lacked coordination and was weak in their defence.

“My boys were the more determined side. We wanted to take something home, so we took the game to them and it worked out for us in the end. We came from a 16 points gap when we saw the slackness in the Team Lagos defence,“ Niagwan said.

Lagos Team Coach, Mark Balogun, who obviously was devastated after the loss, declined comment. Team FCT Coach, Emmanuel Odah, was full of praises to God for the victory, saying the victory was not expected, judging from Team Delta’s quality of players.

“I thank God for the victory; sincerely it was not expected. My girls came from a 10-point gap and outplayed Team Delta in all aspects of the game,“ Odah said.

Team Delta Coach, Nosa Oyenebor, said he was not happy about the loss, saying that a bronze medal would have been good enough for his team.

“Our loss today came as a result of tiredness. We played our semi-final a day before with Team Lagos and we were not well rested,’’ Oyenebor said.

NAN reports that the event’s final between Team Rivers and Team Oyo for the men’s title and between Team Lagos and Team Rivers for the women’s final would hold on Saturday.

  • Handball coaches commend referees for good officiating

Handball coaches at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos on Friday commended the officiating of the event, saying it was fair when compared with the 17th edition. The 17th edition, tagged “Garden City Games,’’ was hosted by Rivers in Port Harcourt in 2011.

Some of the coaches spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the final and medal presentation ceremony of the event at the Handball Courts of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). They said that should the officials continue with the fairness, handball would be revived, adding that bad officiating had been stifling the sport.

Mohammed Ali, Chief Coach of Team Borno, commended the referees and other panel of judges for a doing a good job. “The officiating in this tournament is fair; there is a lot of improvement now. It is like the officials have repented of their ills,’’ he said.

Team Rivers Coach, Olusanjo Ogundoro, said the officiating had improved tremendously, noting that the dearth of impartial officials had been responsible for the slow growth of the game. “The officiating, this time around, is fair. It seems the officials were not bought over by some teams this year,’’ he said.
