  • Carragher eyes top-four finish

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool still have a chance of a top-four finish this season.

The veteran defender came off the bench in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat of Swansea at Anfield, which stretched the Reds’ unbeaten run to seven games.

The victory leaves Liverpool eight points adrift of surprise package West Brom in fourth and four behind in Arsenal in sixth, but Carragher believes the open nature of this season’s league can work in their favour.

“Teams are dropping points all over the place,” the 34-year-old said.

“We look at it as if we haven’t had a great start to the season but winning yesterday we’re not too far off the top four, which is where we want to be.

“From our own point of view, we want to push on and make a challenge for the top four.

“It seems like if everyone is throwing it away it is still up for grabs.”

  • Team Anambra sure of more medals, says Ebunam

Team Anambra sure of more medals, says Ebunam

ARTHUR EBUNAM, Special Adviser to Gov. Peter Obi on Sports, on Monday expressed the hope that Team Anambra would exceed its previous performances at the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos.

The festival, tagged “Eko 2012,” will begin on Nov. 27 and end on Dec. 9. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Team Anambra won two gold, four silver and five bronze medals at the 17th edition of the Games in Port Harcourt in 2011.

Ebunam told NAN in Onitsha, Anambra, that it would be difficult to mention the number of medals, “but we are certainly going to win more, compared to other festivals’’.

He said the sports ministry had come out with different ways of preparation, as well as seeing that the individual athlete’s morale was boosted, ahead of the fiesta.

The adviser said the handlers of the different sports had been directed to maintain a high level of discipline so as to be able to achieve good results at the Games.

“Currently, with the input of stakeholders, the Anambra Sports Ministry has changed three things in the way Team Anambra is preparing for the festival.

“We have changed the care-free attitude to discipline, making it a cardinal point in our camping and we are ready to substitute any athlete not bending to camp and instructors’ rules.

“We have also changed the camp locations, to make sure athletes in various sports are camped in venues that have state-of-the-art facilities, for their use.

“Lastly, we have made the incentive package known and we have introduced instant bonuses after every success at each competition, even as athletes progress from one level of competition to another,’’ he said.

The special adviser said the government had also made funds available, adding that “for now, financially, everybody is given his or her due and it will continue till the end of Eko 2012.

“Our athletes camped at the Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium are in high spirits and are concentrating on their training, due to the assurances, as well as the incentives already given to them’’.

  • Pardew: We must avoid another home loss

Pardew: We must avoid another home loss

Alan Pardew has challenged his players to avoid an unwanted hat-trick as he desperately attempts to inject new life into their season.

The Magpies slipped to a second successive home defeat and into the bottom half of the Premier League on Saturday when Swansea left St James’ Park with a deserved 2-1 victory.

Coupled with last Sunday’s 1-0 loss to West Ham, the latest setback left the natives in restless mood as hopes of matching last season’s top-five finish were dealt a further blow.

But Pardew’s men will run out in front of their home fans once again on Thursday to face Portuguese outfit Maritimo in a game which could clinch their progression to the knockout stage of the Europa League, and the 51-year-old is hoping that will be the springboard they need.

He said: “We certainly don’t want to lose three home games on the trot, that would be a blow.

“It’s a big game for us because if we can win it, it guarantees qualification, and that’s what we need to do, get one hurdle out of the way and then look for our first win away from home in the Premier League in the next game. They are the two immediate hurdles in front of us.”

    800-man contingent for Team Lagos

NO FEWER than 800 athletes and officials will represent Team Lagos at the forth-coming National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged ‘Eko 2012.’

While 640 of the total number are athletes, 160 will be technical staff, coaches and other officials that will represent the state in the various sports during the event.

As things stand, Lagos has presented the largest number of entries among the states competing at the event as it will be participating in 25 sports at the Games.

In a chat with journalists yesterday, the Direcor, Technicals of the Lagos State Sports Council, Akin Ladigbolu said the team list for the athletes is ready, adding that every training equipment needed for the athletes to excel at the Games was provided by the State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), and that as such there will be no excuses for failure.

“I don’t think there are states that have prepared as much as Lagos did. Prior to the commencement of the Festival, we have had four phases of camping and we are now at the last phase.

“Our athletes have scaled through the accreditation process at the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and so all our athletes has been cleared. They will soon be moving to the Games Village for the commencement of the Games proper,” he said.

He however assured that with what is on ground for the state athletes in terms of equipments and motivation, Team Lagos should surpass previous performances.

  • Goalkeeper dilemma for Spartak ahead of Barca match

Spartak Moscow have a goalkeeper dilemma ahead of the Champions League match at home to Group G leaders Barcelona on Tuesday with all their three keepers nursing injuries.

Spartak’s third-choice Artem Rebrov has joined top two keepers Andriy Dykan and Sergei Pesyakov on the sidelines after injuring his shoulder in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nizhny Novgorod.

“Rebrov sustained practically the same injury that Dykan had. Rebrov will miss at least the next few games,” the Russian club said on their website (www.spartak.com) on Sunday.

First-choice Dykan has not played since injuring his shoulder in a league match on September 29 while his deputy Pesyakov has been out for a month with a foot fracture.

Spartak, who are bottom of Group G with three points from four games and have only a slim chance of reaching the knockout round, have not said who will be in goal to face the Spaniards.

In addition, striker Artem Dzyuba will miss at least a week with a hamstring injury, Spartak said.

Unai Emery’s team already have several key players out with injury, including leading striker Welliton, captain Sergei Parshivlyuk, Russia international Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Brazil midfielder Romulo and Ireland winger Aiden McGeady. Argentine defender Nicolas Pareja is suspended for Tuesday’s match.

Ramsey: Montpellier a must-win game for Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey warns that the Gunners must win their Champions League clash with Montpellier on Wednesday to feel secure about reaching the knockout stages.

With two games left to play in Group B, the north London outfit are one point behind leaders Schalke and one ahead of third-placed Olympiakos, with the Welshman looking to beat the already-eliminated French side at home in the hopes of taking first spot.

“The group is pretty tight, so I think you can say we have to win that game,” he told the club’s official website. “We are at home, so hopefully we can do that and put ourselves in a strong position to qualify.

“When we played them in France we were under pressure for periods of the game and we did well to get a result.

“They have competed against every team in the group and shown that they can create and can be a threat, so they will be no pushover. They will want to prove something as well. We have to be aware of that and be on top of our game on the day.”

Ramsey is keen for Arsenal to top their group, as such giving them a better chance of avoiding one of the bigger teams in the next round, though qualification is the primary aim.

“Finishing second has been quite costly in the last few years,” he continued. “We finished second in the group a couple of seasons ago and played Barcelona.

“So you know you’re going to have a strong team if you do finish second but, most importantly, we need to qualify and, if we do, we’re confident that we can compete and challenge against any team in the competition. But we must qualify first and then go from there.”

  • Osaze: Beating Chelsea was great

    Osaze: Beating Chelsea was great

Osaze Odemwingie revealed how Steve Clarke’s half-time team-talk inspired Albion to overcome the Blues after the disappointment of conceding a late first-half equaliser – and move into the Champions League qualification places.

“It felt great to be in the top five and Saturday was an opportunity to climb a little bit more up the table,” he added.

“We believe in ourselves and we’ve proven that so far with some quality football. After they equalised we were disappointed but the gaffer told us that we shouldn’t be disappointed being 1-1 with Chelsea.

“That lifted us up a bit and we started the second half well, as we did the first. I think we totally deserved our victory. The better the results we get the more the confidence grows and also the faith we have in ourselves.

“Our desire to be in the top five keeps us working hard for every point.”

The Nigerian also paid tribute to Shane Long for his commitment to Albion’s cause in the wake of his Nan passing away as he delivered a blistering display in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea.

The former Reading striker revealed a T-shirt saying ‘Rest in Peace Nan’ after giving the Baggies an early lead – and later teed up Odemwingie’s second-half winner as Albion collected an unforgettable three points against the European champions.

And the Nigeria international was full of respect for Long after discovering what he is going through.

“I didn’t know when I was playing but I saw that he was a bit sad when everyone was celebrating in the dressing room afterwards,” said Odemwingie.

“I noticed there was something wrong with him but I didn’t know what had really happened. He deserves a lot of respect as he came to help us when we needed him even in this situation and he deserved his man of the match.

“We must say thank you to him for staying strong because we needed him today and without him the result could have been different, so well done to him. I hope he is able to get over his loss and he is happy and smiling again soon.”

  • 3SC eyes NPL, Champions League

    3SC eyes NPL, Champions League

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) Coach Tunde Odubola, a.k.a Zico has voiced it loud and clear that the club’s ambition next season is not only to win the 2012/2013 Premier League season, but to win the African Champions League for Oyo State and Nigeria in what would be the club’s major continental campaign in two decades.

“We are working very hard to ensure that we win the Nigeria Premier League and go ahead to win the CAF Champions League for our dear fans, the state government and the Management Board of the club.

“It’s been very long, since 1992, that is 20 years now that 3SC last won the CAF Cup called Confederation Cup. So, our ambition is not to only win the Premier League but to go on to win the lucrative CAF Champions League for the club for the very first time in the club’s history since the club missed out twice in the final of the competition”, Odubola told SportingLife.

He also boasted that the club has very good legs that could help achieve their targets for the coming season.

“Firstly, we have done everything possible to retain almost all our best players. Besides that, we have shortlisted some very good players that we found during our participation in both the Nigeria Premier League and the Federation Cup. The players are already with us blending with the team. We also negotiating with them presently”, Zico disclosed.

He eventually revealed their names as Sani Mohammed, a midfielder with the Ocean Boys; Charles Itue, a central defender from Crown FC, Ogbomosho; Jacob Eke, a striker from Kaduna United; Dolphins FC left winger and Azeez Shobowale.

“The other two players are our players which include our left full back Chima Akas who was injured while playing for the Nigerian Olympic team that crashed out of the last 2012 London Olympics. Akas scored six goals to emerge second highest goal scorer behind another left full back Mutiu Adepoju who scored seven goals”, Zico revealed.

  • IGIEBOR TO BERTIS FANS: l’m no magician

IGIEBOR TO BERTIS FANS: l’m no magician

Under pressure Super Eagles ace, Nosa Igiebor has told Real Betis fans that he is not a magician and he also appealed for their patience.

The Nigerian scored a stunning goal in the 3-1 victory over Venezuela in an international friendly played Wednesday in Marlins Park, Miami.

“The fans need to be patient with me.

“I’m not a magician. It’ll take time for me to gain my confidence as I need to prove myself by getting more La Liga playing time.

“Moreover, I think I’m showing progress as my performance in the last two games, has gradually shown that I’m getting better in every game.

“Since I arrived in Seville, I found out that I don’t find myself in the coach’s match plans like I always did in the club I played for in Norway and Israel.

“The change was radical, hence it made me not to assimilate quickly. It’s not good for my mentality. I’m young, I know there’s a lot of competition among the twenty-six players who make up the team and also I still have difficulties communicating with my teammates and some coaching staff, “added the 21-year-old.

“Communication is essential. When I arrived, I noticed that almost no one spoke English in the dressing room, as I could only interact with Perquis and Campbell.

“It’s a bit better for me now as I quite understand some words and sometimes I need someone to translate what the coach says, but at least when we play I know whether to go to one side or another, up or down. To be honest, I’m not particularly smart or clever with languages.

“After three years in Norway I was unable to speak their language, but I hope that everything goes much better here in that sense.”

  • DEPORTIVO LA CORUNYA 0-2 LEVANTE: Martins nets first away goal

DEPORTIVO LA CORUNYA 0-2 LEVANTE: Martins nets first away goal

Returnee Super Eagles forward Obafemi Martins has put his much-talked-about below expectation performance in Nigeria’s international friendly against Venezuela behind him as he resume his goal scoring party for Spanish side Levante.

Obagoal, who was charged by Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi to double his on-field efforts if he is to catch the train to South Africa 2013, scored his first away goal for Levante on Sunday against Depotivo la Coruna.

The all-important goal came in the 40th minute of the match following an assist from teammate Barkero, increasing Obagoal’s goal haul for the club so far to five. Prior to Sunday’s tie, the former Wolfsburg and Rubin Kazan forward had registered four goals at home which includes two goals in the 3-1 defeat of Granada, a lone goal against Valencia and a goal in the 2-1 defeat of Real Sociedad respectively. Barkero, who had earlier provided the assist for Obafemi to shoot the visitors into the lead, grabbed the second goal in the 82nd minute with assistance this time from Angel who replaced the Nigerian in the 81st minute

Levante’s away victory Sunday did not however come easy as the centre refereee Miguel Pérez was forced to dish out as many as eight yellow cards, garnished with a red that handed Obafemi’s teammate Pedro Lopez the marching orders in the 54th minute. Five of the yellow cards went to the homers who fought like wounded lions all in a bid to stop Levante from running away with the three points at stake.
