    Taye Taiwo earns club’s praise

Ukrainian side, Dynamo Kiev, have finally given a seal of approval to Nigerian defender, Taye Taiwo.

The former Lobi Stars defender had a bit of a tough time adjusting to conditions after his move from English side, Queens Park Rangers, but the effusive compliments paid him on Dynamo website, will seem to confirm that the Nigerian is now at ease.

“We had high hopes for the defender who is on loan from Milan, but at the beginning the Nigerian was not much use,” the website post reads. “He was partly responsible for our defeat against Vorskla, but his subsequent form testified that he was on the road to reform.”

“Taiwo will often attack without getting back in defence, forgetting his duty. But in a particular game, he saved Dynamo by making a goal line clearance, and has been fantastic since,” the post further said.

Taiwo is now a permanent fixture in Dynamo starting line-up.

  • Ameobi to dump club for Nigeria

Ameobi to dump club for Nigeria

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi is hoping his international debut for Nigeria can earn a call-up for January’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“Any professional wants to play at the highest level. It’s something I’m really excited about – and hopefully, if I’m selected, we can do something great,” he told BBC Sport.

Nigeria will take on African champions Zambia, as well as Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, in Group C of the finals, which run between 19 January and 10 February in South Africa.

Ameobi, whose Nations Cup dreams may displease Newcastle United Alan Pardew, played half an hour against the Latin Americans.

Ameobi earned special praise from fans and officials after helping set up the third goal and the 31-year-old insists he has nothing but respect for his team-mates.

“It’s my first game, I just feel honoured to play international football. We played good and made life hard for them. It was nothing personal, we fought hard and gave our everything. They had great support here but we took the game to them. The lads were superb and I’m delighted to have contributed to a good win,” he said.

After a goalless first half, Ideye Brown and Nosa Igiebor scored in a five-minute spell early in the second half. Both teams failed to convert several scoring opportunities in the first half, but the Super Eagles broke through in the 48th minute.

The brilliant Igiebor found Kwambe Solomon, whose cross was tapped in by Brown.

Igiebor made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute blasting a fierce 30-yard shot that landed inside the right post and stunned the pro-Venezuela crowd inside the Marlins Park.

Venezuela pulled a goal back thanks to Frank Fleschcer in the 69th minute.

But Ameobi calmly held-up play before finding Lazio youngster Onazi Ogenyi, who completed the scoring in stoppage time.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi admitted they had played a tough opponent: “This game will prepare us for what to expect at the Nations Cup.

“The boys turned up the heat in the second half and were duly rewarded.

“We’ve seen what we can do and learned things here as well.”

Nigeria begin their Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Burkina Faso on 21 January and then face Zambia and Ethiopia in Group C.

  • Tavriya deny Adeleye’s sale

Information in the media that Nigeria international Dele Adeleye is no longer a player of Tavriya is not true, writes football.ua citing the official website of the Ukrainian club.

Instead, the 23 – year – old Beijing Olympic silver medalist does not appear in training, and this act could be punished by the Simferopol based club.

Executive Director of Tavriya, Yury Vasyukov says Adeleye followed the path of his compatriot Abdulwaheed Afolabi .

”Having a contract with Tavriya, he simply ran out of the club – not show up in training, turned off the phone and we do not know where he currently resides. ”

Tavriya confirmed that they received a fax from Adeleye on November 14, which informed that he unilaterally terminated his contract. The lawyers of the club are dealing with the situation.

  • Aluko dynamite waiting to explode — Hull City coach

Super Eagles and Hull City winger Sone Aluko has been tipped to do major exploits in the game in the near future.

Hull City Manager Steven Bruce who made the prediction noted that the 23-year-old has transformed into a major player since leaving Birmigham City four years ago. Bruce who is the current manager of Hull City incidentally was in charge of Birmingham City where Aluko progressed in the youth team.

Aluko who quit embattle Scottish side Rangers for Hull City, Bruce noted was hitherto plagued by one form of injury or the other and has since risen above the set back to emerge into a fine player.

“If you remember, I took him away in pre-season as a 17-year-old when we went to Spain,” Bruce said.

“The thing was, it took him a long while to grow, to develop physically. He was always having hamstring, groin niggles, whatever, and that held him back a bit.

“When I was out of the game, I saw him a couple of times for Rangers and he was excellent – and he was no longer a boy, but a man.

“It can take a while for young players to blossom. Sone’s ability was never in doubt, and he’s certainly done very, very well for us.”

Aluko, 23, made one appearance for Blues, as a substitute in the League Cup against Hereford United in August, 2007.

He was loaned to Aberdeen and then moved there permanently for around £50,000 during Alex McLeish’s tenure a year later.

The 5ft 8in Aluko has scored six times for Hull this season.

And his dynamic play, dropping deep or attacking from a front-two position, has been a big feature of a Tigers start that has taken them to within five points of leaders Crystal Palace.

  • Dynamo Kiev celebrates Ideye

Ukrainian club, Dynamo Kiev are celebrating Nigerian hit man, Brown Ideye, on their official website.

Ideye earned a fifth cap for Nigeria against Venezuela, and opened his goal account for the national team in the same game.

Now, the Ukrainians have gone to town, detailing the exploits of the former Dolphins of Port Harcourt striker.

“Ideye uses as much force as necessary. Let’s hope that Brown saved more goals for the rest of the season and, in particular, the Champions League matches, one of such reviews said, while describing one of the goals of Ideye.

“The opponents of Dynamo Kiev in Europe continue to say that the most dangerous player in the team is Andriy Yarmolenko, but Nigerian sniper, Ideye Brown, continues to score goals. In five rounds he has six goals. It seems that it is an impossible task to keep Brown quiet,” another post on the site said.

“Nigerian forward, Ideye, showed the usual focus on goal and celebrated once again: the seventh in seven rounds. Looks like Brown is set on rewriting the records, ” screamed another post. The encomiums followed the goal he scored against Venezuela, and there was a special report on that too.

  • English Championship: Etuhu battles Petersbrough today

Blackburn Rovers defensive midfielder Dickson Etuhu and his teammates will confront their host team Peterborough United at the London Road Stadium today in a week 17 encounter of the English Championship season.

The out of favour Super Eagles player has been a regular for the team this season as he has played all but one game for Blackburn since joining the team at the 2012/2013 summer transfer window.

Etuhu hasn’t been a part of the Super Eagles team for a while but has been helping the former English Premiership team put up a quite spirited performance.

Blackburn has though not been in great form recently as they have only been able to get a paltry two wins in five games.

Petersbrough doesn’t had a better form as they have lost their last three matches as against Blackburn who has only lost just once in their last five outings.

Petersbrough are currently battling relegation as they are just one spot above the bottom team on the Championship log.

  • Eagles’ defence worries Shofoluwe

Former Nigerian international, Yisa Shofoluwe, has stated that a solid defence line is key to Super Eagles enjoying a successful outing at the 2013 AFCON.

Shofoluwe reacted on the 3-1 win by Super Eagles over Venezuela’s La Vinotinto in Miami, Florida on Thursday.

He expressed happiness with the team’s win but acknowledged that the backline should give head coach, Stephen Keshi and his assistants “cause for concern.”

“It’s a good result for the team I must say. But I’m sure the coaches including Stephen Keshi will be looking at what the team failed to do right. For instance, the defence should give the coaches real cause for concern as they prepare for the Nations Cup next year.

“Attack-wise I think the team is very rich and even the coaches have options. The concentration should be on the defence now because we have just about two months or so to the Nations Cup. And if you want to win a major competition like the Nations Cup you must be solid from the back up to the front. And I believe the coaches will really work on that area,” said Shofoluwe, known as the Dean of Defence during his playing days.

Shofoluwe also pointed out that Keshi remains on the right path of building a team for the Africa Cup of Nations by handing debuts to Shola Ameobi, Bright Dike and Solomon Kwambe.

“There’s nothing in giving new players the chance to play in friendly matches. They are called friendly matches and they are meant to help the coaches correct errors in the team and bring in players that can fit their plans. So there’s nothing wrong in trying out new players,” remarked the former Nigerian defender.

Shofoluwe played for Nigeria at the 1988 AFCON in Morocco, where the team finished as losing finalists after a lone goal loss to Cameroon.

  • Nigeria’s attendance doubtful

Nigerian’s participation in the bi-ennial African Senior Table Tennis championships is in doubt, a top official of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has observed.

Segun Oguntade, the Secretary-General of NTTF, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that the federation lacked the funding to sponsor the team to the event. The championships, expected to run from Nov. 17 to Nov. 23 will take place in Cairo, Egypt.

“We do not have funds to sponsor our athletes to the championships for now. We still have some hope that a miracle can happen,’’ he said.

Oguntade lamented that it was sad that Nigeria would be absent at the competition, particularly because it was a tournament of high importance for the ranking of players.

“It is like the table tennis version of the Nations Cup in Africa, because it is held every two years. It is influential because it is a ranking tournament,’’ he said.

The tournament, over the years, had been dominated by players from Egypt and Nigeria and recently Congo Democratic had been making some impact.

Meanwhile, Oguntade said the Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) would also hold its Executive Committee elections on the sidelines of the competition. He said that Nigeria’s Banji Oladapo– the current Executive Vice President (Administration)– would be seeking re-elections into the committee.

According to him, the election will hold on Nov. 18. Oladapo was a former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC). “We sincerely wish him the best of luck, even though the federation might miss out of the event,’’ Oguntade said.

“It is sad that I will not be enjoying home support and funding as I go into the elections. If it is the wish of God, I will make it,’’ he said.

  • Managing sport nepotism

Nigeria as a nation is contending with a great problem which many have described as a monster that is slowing the pace of the country’s movement towards its intended move to the promise land. Sport as a phenomenon in Nigeria cannot be isolated in the fight against corruption hence we must begin to think about adopting a new form of sport management that can fast track our sporting project to the desired destination. Let me rest this discussion for another day while we address an identified cancer in the wheel of our sport development especially in the various States across Nigeria.

Today as I x-ray the various indices predicting our current state in the development and management of sport I came to the conclusion that Nigeria is where we are in sport largely because of what I refer to as “Sport Management Nepotism” which is a situation whereby persons been appointed into sport management offices are appointed not on the basis of merit or professionalism but rather on favoritism and patronage which is always not on merit.

We cannot continue to manage sport in this manner as though we are managing a family business. High ethics, professionalism, capability, transparency, healthy competition, experience must all be considered before ever an appointment is made especially in appointing sport managers in our various states this of course does not isolate appointment at the federal level too. I am aware that some state government are of the erroneous believe that the appointment of persons into sports related management capacities is basically by the youthfulness of the person.

However, in most cases Some State Government appoint their political aides and cronies without any sport management background and who are not interested in learning or embarking on sport management training. This act is a major setback in the development of sport in Some States within Nigeria. There is hardly any State in Nigeria that have not been involved in Sport Management Nepotism and the product of this process in most cases have left nothing to write home about that is why we have in Some States in Nigeria no suitable Stadium or signs of sport development.

A reflection into the electioneering campaign period of our State Governors, portrays a worrisome picture in that most Gubernatorial Candidates only focus during their campaign in promising the construction of good roads, hospitals, boreholes, schools and creation of employment e.t.c. just to mention a few but I can’t ever remember any contesting Gubernatorial Candidate that has talked about his or her Sport Development Programme for the State.

No wonder some State Governors even after spending their first tenure in Office cannot boast of constructing a standard stadium and sport complex for their state. For those who manage to build stadiums they failed in engaging the qualified personnel to help them drive the State Sport Economy development agenda.

The lack of State constructed stadium is a big setback in the actualization of the overall sport development policy of Nigeria and the vision 20:20 and this is a big shame considering the immense benefit that would have been derived by the ownership of such facilities. For those states that have good stadiums that have been able to host International Sporting Events I am very sure, they will be able to comprehend what am talking about when I say the benefit of such hosting is tremendous and can best be imagined and experienced by the host state.

Considering the importance of owning State Sport Facilities, I wish to implore any State that have not constructed a befitting Sport Stadium or sporting complex in their State to please Endeavour to build standard Sport Facilities that are fully equip with modern equipments thus they will be unlocking the sporting potentials of the indigenes while also creating a viable sport economy in their state. For this feat to be achieved there must be a determined effort especially in the area of appointment of sport managers. We should begin to see the benefit of taking the business of sport seriously.

A quick glance into the economic activity that may be experienced in a State hosting a National or International Competition includes and not limited to the high patronage of Hotels, Transport Services, Tour Guides, Security Companies, Servicing Companies, Media, Eateries, engagement of people as volunteers or ad-hoc staff, souvenir marketing, increase in printing activities, promotion of friendship, creation of business opportunities and promotion of peace. All these can be achieved if the right people that understand the business of sport management can be allowed to be appointed to do their job with the needed support from the government

It is not too late for any State Government to decide to develop Sport and appropriately fund the sector for the benefit of the State and its Citizens. We need to see the benefits of taking the business of sport seriously because it has the capacity to create jobs for all. The need to stop Sport Management Nepotism is now if we must get it right, Sport Management appointment is not to be used to satisfy political permutations it should be given its rightful place which is a professional area that requires those with prerequisite expertise in its management.

Sport Management is a professional area that requires people that are specifically trained in this area. There is therefore the need for us to make sure that all those to be appointed into strategic sport management roles including sport committee’s are qualified to be so appointed. Sport Management appointment should not be used as a rehabilitation tool to satisfy political cronies. I wish to appeal therefore to all State Government in Nigeria to please invest in sport and to also not hesitate in ensuring that only professionals are engaged in the management of sport in their States so as to be able to enjoy the true return on such investment.

  • ITTF umpire warns against betting in table tennis

John Peters, an International Table Tennis (ITTF) Umpire, on Friday warned punters (gamblers) that betting in the event was banned at the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos.

Peters spoke against the backdrop that players and spectators alike bet in matches in the past. He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the new rule by ITTF, banning betting, would be applied at the festival, and any player caught would be disqualified.

“The ITTF has placed a ban on betting, it is now an act of misbehaviour for anyone to bet at any table tennis match. We have been talking to our players and coaches about betting because we are going to adopt this rule at the festival.

“We know it is not going to be easy to remove this habit but I know it will gradually go down because if anyone is caught, especially the players, it is automatic disqualification. If the player is not disqualified due to the discretion of the umpire; marks would be awarded to his opponent. So, I appeal to them to adhere strictly to the rules,’’ he said.

He also said the racket control exercise would be applied, explaining that players must use the ITTF identified rackets and manufacturers’ logo must be on it.

“Players must have their rackets checked at the call room now unlike then it was checked on the match table. The trend has changed and players must abide by the rules,’’ he warned.

He noted that fans caught betting would be cautioned and if they failed to comply, they would be sent out of the match arena.
