  • National Stadium Lagos designated as car park

The National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, was on Tuesday confirmed as one of the places to be used as car parks during the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos. The festival, tagged “Eko 2012’’, will hold from Nov. 27 to Dec. 9.

The Secretary, Transportation and Logistics Sub-committee for the Games, Omoua Oni-Okpaku, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Oni-Okpaku said that the premises of the edifice, which was in a dilapidated state, would serve as a parking lot for the Teslim Balogun Stadium, though users would pay an undisclosed sum. She, however, said that dignitaries and Team heads would not pay for using the arena.

NAN reports that prior to the arrangement, the users of the stadium paid N100 as entry fee.

Oni-Okpaku added that the parking lot for the Onikan Stadium would be at the Muson Car Park, under the bridge, opposite the Army Officers’ Mess and the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).

“This is to prevent traffic congestion in and around the venues before, during and after the competition,” Oni-Okpaku explained.

  • NFF writes Mali FF on team’s travel plans

Miffed by the delay tactics deployed by the Mali Football Federation to keep their itinerary close to their chest, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has written the West African side to provide their travel plans ahead of their weekend CAF U17 Championship qualifier against the Golden Eaglets.

The NFF’s Assistant Director (Media), Demola Olajire in a brief chat with SportingLife explained that the country’s football house resorted to sending a letter to Mali after waiting endlessly to hear from their November 18th foes in the first leg of the final qualifying round slated for the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar.

He informed that the Mali FF said they would make available their itinerary only after their meeting on today.

“We have just written to the Malians after we waited without any official word from them on when they are billed to arrive Nigeria.

“They replied that their travel plans would be decided on Wednesday after holding a meeting to that effect. We don’t want to be caught unprepared. So we are preparing towards Friday as their likely day of arrival,” Olajire said.

The Eaglets had defeated Niger Republic and Guinea U17 teams in glowing fashion in the earlier rounds and if they surmount the obstacle called Mali, Nigeria will be staging a return to the CAF U17 Championship scheduled for Morocco next year for the first time since 2007 when the Late coach Yemi Tella tutored side last won the competition for the country in Togo.

Ameobi storms Eagles’ camp in Miami

    • Calls family to announce arrival

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has joined up with the Super Eagles in Miami, USA, with only late invitee Bright Ejike still awaited.

“Ameobi was the last player to join the squad after his flight from England was rescheduled. As a result he could not be part of our first training,” disclosed Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya.

“But he is very excited to join the team for the first time and even called up his family on his arrival.”

He is expected to be taken on a special drill before joining up with the rest of the squad for full training at the match venue.

Timberwolves striker Bright Dike, who was a late call-up after the withdrawal of Chelsea stars Mikel Obi and Victor Moses, is the only player still being expected.

Levante striker Obafemi Martins, Elderson Echiejile from Portuguese club Sporting Braga, Ogenyi Onazi from Lazio and goalkeeper Austin Ejide were among the players who trained at the Miami International Stadium.

“Martins was all over the place in training. He wants to prove he deserves to be part of the team after a long absence,” Alaiya disclosed.

“He has promised to put in his best and see that Venezuela fall to justify his recall and make Nigerians happy. Obagoal has netted 18 times in 37 matches for Nigeria. The mood in camp is very high and we expect a good performance on match day.”

Venezuela have also arrived Miami, officials further informed. The match will kick-off 8pm Miami time, which will be 2am Thursday in Nigeria.

  • Calabar Stadium wears new look for Eaglets

The government of Cross River State is pulling all the stops to ensure that the Golden Eaglets’ last 2013 African U-17 qualifier home game against Mali on Sunday would be in a blaze of glory and fanfare as the U.J. Esuene Stadium is now undergoing redecoration.

General painting of the 10,000-capacity stadium started on Monday and would expectedly be completed before Sunday’s crunch game between Nigeria and Mali.

The stadium’s manager, Koko Bassey-Omara informed that the Golden Eaglets’ game against Mali would not have come at a better time than ahead of the huge annual Calabar Carnival.

“The renovation at the U.J. Esuene stadium would serve dual purposes for the Golden Eaglets’ last game against Mali on Sunday and importantly our biggest annual festival, the Calabar Carnival,” he said. “We have really enjoyed the Golden Eaglets here and it is a pleasant coincidence that the team’s last game is coming just before the start of the 2012 Calabar Carnival.”

It was learnt that the His Excellency Senator Liyel Imoke has spared little in ensuring that the U.J. Esuene stadium is at its posh best for the two forthcoming big events.

” Frankly, the governor doesn’t joke with beautification of Calabar and I think it is only fitting that the Golden Eaglets that have been here for this long would see the stadium at its colourful best which is usually the case for the Calabar Carnival,”he added.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eaglets’ build-up towards Sunday’s game is in top gear as the team finetunes its preparation inside the main pitch of the stadium.

“Our schedule is going well and we now train daily inside the stadium,”informed coach Garba Manu (MFR). “We have few days to the match against Mali and we don’t want to overstretch the players.”

  • Keshi to Super Eagles Beat Venezuela silly

    • Players raring to go

The expectation of the Super Eagles handler, Stephen Keshi of giving Venezuela a run for their money in tomorrow’s international friendly match has been raised by the presence of all the expected players based home (in Nigeria) and abroad in Miami, Florida in the United States of America.

Eagles spokesman, Ben Alaiya told SportingLife from Miami yesterday that all the players expected have all hit camp and they were to go for a training session by the time of filling this report.

“Obafemi Martins was involved in the first training we had and Shola Ameobi joined us yesterday evening and he is having breakfast with the rest of the players as you speak with me now. The only player that came in last is Bright Dike who plays in the MLS for Timberwolves FC. Ameobi and Dike will train with us today in what is expected to be a full team training for the Venezuela match”, Alaiya disclosed.

The Media Officer also confided in SportingLife that the way the players were taking the match was more than a mere friendly because some of them who have not played recently for the team have resolved to use the match to warm themselves into the heart of the team handler, Stephen Keshi.

“We are surely expecting a thrilling and a fulfilling match tomorrow and the mood and spirit as exhibited by the players in camp could attest to this fact. I think some of the returnee players and the newly invited ones would like to justify their inclusion in the team”, he observed.

  • Butler claims British title; Smith brothers celebrate

Butler claims British title; Smith brothers celebrate

Ellesmere Port’s Paul Butler captured the vacant British super-flyweight championship with a powerful first round demolition over Liverpool’s John Donnelly at Liverpool Olympia on Friday night. Former ABA champion Butler has made the transition from the amateur to the professional ranks with ease since turning over in 2010 and was 8-0 going into this.

Donnelly, four years older than Butler at 28, and more experienced having had almost double the amount of fights, came into this as the reigning English super-flyweight champion but had been stopped in each of his two defeats against Stuart Hall when challenging for the British bantamweight title and Gavin Reid.

Butler (8st 2) lived up to his nickname as the ‘baby faced assassin’ by requiring just 69 seconds to brush Donnelly aside to the delight of the animated crowd. A right hand knocked Donnelly (8st 2) partially off balance and a wicked left hook to the mid-section sent John grimacing to the canvas after a delayed reaction. As soon as Donnelly rolled on his side in agony it was clear that he wasn’t going to get up, leaving referee Steve Gray to complete the formalities of the ten count and hand Butler his first pro title. Butler, now 9-0 (4), looks a real handful and should provide a lot more excitement in 2013.

The Olympia undercard saw a good night’s work for the Smith brothers, Paul and Liam. Older brother Paul Smith, 30, returned from a year-long lay off following his stoppage loss to George Groves to force Ireland’s Tommy Tolan to retire on his stool at the end of the fourth of a scheduled six. Smith (12st 7) typically looked a little fleshy around the mid-section but impressed offensively, forcing Tolan (12st 3) to briefly touch down after catching him with a left hook in the opening 30 seconds.

Smith appeared to hurt Tolan every time he landed cleanly. Body shots and a short uppercut inside had the Irishman on shaky legs in round two as Smith continued to dominate. As Tolan became increasingly desperate he started to become reckless with his head which left Smith with some reddening underneath his left eye in the third. Paul maintained his composure though and hammered Tolan in round four with hooks and right hands which opened a cut above Tolan’s right eye. It was one-way traffic and Tolan wisely elected to remain on his stool instead of coming out for round five.

Smith, now 32-3 (18), impressed offensively and will seek to regain the British super-middleweight title that he lost to James DeGale by challenging current champion Kenny Anderson in the new year.

Paul’s younger sibling Liam Smith, 24, also triumphed by winning his British light-middleweight title eliminator against Scotland’s Gary McMillan with a solid if unspectacular ten round points victory. Smith, now unbeaten in 13 (with one draw against Terry Carruthers), outworked taller southpaw McMillan in every round who was deducted a point by official Howard Foster for holding in round three. McMillan’s successes were rare, aside from a good left cross which nailed Smith at the end of round four which Liam shook off the effects from and kept on coming. The unbeaten Smith is now in the queue to meet the winner of next month’s British light-middleweight title fight between reigning champion Brian Rose and former holder Sam Webb.

Former junior ABA champion Matty Fagan won his pro debut but was guilty of letting the occasion get to him by getting caught far too often by Francis Maina (now 1-3-1) in their light-welterweight scrap over four-three’s. The well-supported Fagan, 24, was far too eager to please his passionate following and was nailed on several occasions by right hands in the opening round which rocked his head back. Fagan, who is trained by ex-pro Anthony Farnell, settled down slightly after a bumpy first round and started to bring his jab into play in round two to set up some right hands of his own.

Over eagerness got the better of Fagan once more in round three. He lost his footing following a tangling of legs after launching an over zealous attack, and more of the same later in round saw the Ellesmere Port man spin himself around 360 degrees. In keeping with the spirit of the contest, the fourth and final round was keenly fought but it was Fagan who landed the cleaner shots to open up a cut to Maina’s left eye which secured him a 40-37 points victory from referee Alvin Finch.

  • Ferrara vows to fight on

    Ferrara vows to fight on

Under-fire Sampdoria manager Ciro Ferrara has promised to stay and do his best to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Hapless Samp slumped to a seventh consecutive Serie A defeat on Sunday, courtesy of Palermo and their teenage striker Paulo Dybala, who scored twice in a 2-0 win.

Ferrara was given a vote of confidence before the game, but with his newly-promoted side sliding into the relegation zone, senior management may be forced to make some tough decisions.

The ex-Juventus boss told Gazzetta.it: “This situation is my responsibility, I have a good group of lads at my disposition and it’s up to me to find the key to success.

“Will I quit? No, that’s not the right thing to do and it’s not in my character. I have to resolve the problems, not abandon the team.

“I have to get into the guys’ heads, I don’t think I’m making myself understood. I realise they are doing everything they can, but the results are just not coming.

“I am here to tell you that the responsibility is mine, not theirs, and fear is stopping them from playing well. I must find a solution.”

  • Hodgson: Wilshere is envy of every team

Hodgson: Wilshere is envy of every team

England manager Roy Hodgson has described Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere as “the type of player that all teams are looking for” after the 20-year-old returned to the national squad for the first time since his long injury lay-off.

The youngster recently made his comeback to the Gunners team after missing over 14 months of football due to various problems with his right ankle.

The playmaker is nearing full fitness, having now made two starts in the Premier League, and Hodgson believes that Wilshere is exactly the type of player that England require in order to progress to the next level.

“It’s good to see [Wilshere] back and he is, in my opinion, the type of midfield player that all the teams are looking for today – a lot of energy, a lot of ability with the ball, capable of running with the ball, very tenacious in his play, and has got the necessary pace,” he told reporters.

The 65-year-old feels that one of the biggest challenges facing England will be their ability to match other nations’ athleticism and technique in midfield as they move away from a more direct style of play.

“One thing that becomes more and more obvious is that, the higher the level you play, the more pace, athleticism and mobility plays a part,” he continued.

“You take all the top teams today in the world, and they’re all going down the route of pace, technique, mobility, as opposed to routes that may have been successful in the past, not least for teams like Sweden and England.”
