Breach of contract Tavria to pay Afolabi N16m

The world’s soccer governing body, FIFA, has fined Ukrainian football club Tavria Simferopol $100,000 (about N16m) over an employment dispute with a Nigerian player and banned the club from registering any new players before the winter transfer window of 2013.

On Oct. 25 FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled Tavria should pay Abdulwaheed Afolabi $100,000 in outstanding remuneration and compensation for breach of contract.

“Furthermore, a ban from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next entire and consecutive registration periods was imposed on the Ukrainian club for having breached the relevant contract without just cause,” read FIFA’s decision, delivered to Tavria on Nov. 6.

In turn, Tavria’s official website announced that the club intends to appeal the decision at the Court for Arbitration in Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This summer, Afolabi, a 20-year old Nigerian national, left Tavria unceremoniously and eventually appeared at a Russian soccer team. In August the disciplinary committee of Ukraine’s Premier League banned the player for six months from playing football and fined him $540,000.

Afolabi had argued he had the right to terminate his contract anytime with the club, and had complained about his salary not having been paid in full. However, Tavria disputes his account.

A survey of Ukrainian soccer players conducted by FIFPro, a global organization representing professional footballers, in February found that 15.5 percent had experienced delays in the payment of their salaries, while 7.6 percent had been approached to consider match-fixing. That means that, on average, almost two of the 22 players on the field will have been offered the chance to fix a game’s result.

“A player who has to wait for his money has a greater chance of being approached to manipulate a match,” the FIFPro report reads.

These issues have been brought to the spotlight by a recent hearing over match fixing between two Ukrainian clubs at the Lausanne arbitration court.

The court will decide whether a 2008 match between Kharkiv Metalist and Karpaty was fixed. Metalist won the game 4-0. In August 2010, Ukraine’s football federation found the match was fixed, and fined and banned the players and club officials from the two clubs in addition to deducting 9 points from each side.

In their decision, FFU officials pointed to a video made a few days after the game that surfaced in Ukrainian media in 2010.

The video allegedly shows Karpaty defender Serhiy Lashchenkov telling the club’s honorary president Petro Dymyinsky how the game was fixed. A voice, allegedly Lashchenkov’s, says in the recording that he took $110,000 from Yevhen Krasnikov, Metalist’s sporting director and, along with other senior players, talked his teammates into taking $10,000 each to lose the game.

The court is yet to deliver its verdict from the February hearing.

In October, several players from Metallurg Zaoporizhya complained to Ukrainian media that the team hasn’t t received salary payments for the last six months.

Metallurg’s official website, denied the salary delays and said every soccer player on the team is receiving timely salary payments based on the terms and conditions of their respective contracts.

Rufai regrets ‘96 AFCON shut out

Ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper and captain Peter Rufai has expressed his disappointment over the Nigeria senior national team’s absence from the 1996 African Cup of Nations in South Africa due to political reasons.

Speaking shortly after holding a stakeholders meeting with officials of the Ogun State Football Association on the plan to move the game forward in the Gateway State on Thursday in Abeokuta, the former Go Ahead Eagles of Holland safe-hand, said politics has contributed negatively to the dwindling growth of soccer in the continent and bemoaned the stern stand of the late General Sani Abacha, the then Head of States, even when the Eagles were the defending Champions and were the favourites for the title.

Peter Rufai added that the Eagles were better prepared to defend their crown in the Rainbow Nation and said the inability to attend that edition culminated in the end of some players’ international careers . He described the 1994 set as a group of highly dedicated professional players that should be emulated by the current set of players.

Rufai, who is fondly called Dodomayana by million of his admirers across Africa, said lack of commitment and low patriotic zeal accounted for the dwindling nature of Nigerian football at present.

He advised the present crop of players in the Super Eagles to strive hard at the forthcoming African Cup of Nations in South Africa next January and not underrate any team, describing Ethiopia, and the reigning champions Zambia as well as Bukina Faso as strong teams that can give any coach sleepless nights.

  • NFF strikes national team broadcast deal

D1D 2 Sport has acquired a package of media rights for Nigeria soccer team games from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), beginning with a friendly against Venezuela in Miami on 14th November.

The broadcaster has acquired exclusive global broadband, mobile and internet rights and television rights in ‘Europe, Scandinavia, UAE, Australia and Sudan’, according to a statement.

D1D2 chief executive Mahesh Bajaj said the deal was based around the spike in interest likely after Nigeria’s qualification for January’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Bajaj said: “On a commercial basis if we just simply consider the amount of Nigerian nationals living overseas and the rise of African football over the last decade then we pulled out all the stops at the last minute to get the deal formally endorsed by the Nigerian Football Federation.”

Osaze urges West Brom to keep Lukaku

Peter Odemwingie has urged West Brom to keep strike partner Romelu Lukaku until the end of the season.

Chelsea’s Lukaku is on loan with the Baggies until June 30, 2013, but there is a clause in the agreement stipulating that the European champions can recall the teenager to Stamford Bridge in the next two months. ”If we want to finish top seven, we need him for the rest of the season and hopefully he will stay. If we want to do something better than before, we need to keep hold of players now and not let anyone go.

”Then in May we can say, yes, that was the right decision,” Odemwingie, who bagged a brace in Monday’s 2 – 0 win over Southampton, told Birmingham Mail. In the current campaign, the 19 – year – old Belgium international has netted 3 goals in 312 minutes played.

2013 Africa Cup of Nations: Keshi wary of opponents

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has stressed there are no minnows in Nigeria’s group for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Keshi’s side have been drawn in the tournament’s Group C, which comprises Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

Despite being favoured to top the group, Keshi says that his team will treat their rivals with equal respect.

“I don’t think there is any weak side amongst the teams that have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa,” Keshi told Goal.com.

“If you have qualified, that means the team merits it. So any group that you find yourself in you just have to do what you have to do to survive in the group.

“There is no cheap group and I really don’t think there is a big group either. All teams that qualified are there on equal strength until otherwise proved during the course of the competition.

“The most important thing is how you prepare your team as the mentality of the players and their attitude is the key to success in the competition.”

Nigerian players are currently enjoying a rich vein of form for clubs across Europe and, while pleased with that news, Keshi is anticipating some tough decisions when selecting his squad for the biennial tournament.

“I think the fine form of my players in Europe is quite heart-warming news most especially coming at a time we are planning our final preparations for the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa,” he said. “It is good for a coach to have multiple choices that he can pick from.

“This is what I want so it is a good thing for us. But we have a number of attackers we need to take along to the Nations Cup. We surely cannot take everybody there because we have other departments to consider like the midfield, the defence and even the goalkeeping area.

“We have a stipulated number of players that we can actually take to the competition, so we will see.

“Whoever we think is ready that will not only play the game but also help in engendering team spirit and also help the team to achieve the result we crave for will be invited.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Thursday congratulated eminent Nigerians who have been appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to help deliver a successful 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Member of NFF Technical Committee, Etubom Paul Bassey, has been appointed by CAF as General Coordinator for Group A of the tournament.

The well-travelled foremost journalist, who is also a CAF General Coordinator, was invited to the Draw Ceremony held in Durban last month and subsequently bagged the appointment as the Super Eagles were thrown in a different pool for the group phase.

Bassey, a former member of the CAF Media Committee, will superintend proceedings in Johannesburg and Durban, where host South Africa, Angola, Morocco and Cape Verde will do battle in the group phase of the tournament that will take place between 19th January – 10th February.

Bassey will automatically be in the thick of organization of the opening and closing ceremonies, with Johannesburg’s choice theatre, Soccer City, set to host both mega shows.

Coordinator of the Women National Teams, Aisha Falode, is a member of the CAF Media Committee and will also serve in that capacity at the finals, while Mr. Samson Adamu will work as an Assistant General Coordinator.

NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, said: “The appointment of these prominent and hard working Nigerians is further proof of the high regard that the Confederation of African Football has for our people, and how much they value our contributions to the African game. We are very proud of them and their work and we wish them another flawless and blameless output at the Africa Cup of Nations.”

SOUTH AFRICA 2013 AFCON: FIFA clearance threatens Sidney Sam

Sidney Sam’s hope of playing for Nigeria so soon may have to wait, supersport.com can report.

Having featured for his country of birth, Germany, at Under 19, 20 and 21 levels, the Bayer Leverkusen man will have to be cleared by the world soccer governing body, FIFA to play for Nigeria.

Supersport.com was made to understand that the 24-year-old will have to indicate in writing to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that he wants to agree to an international switch.

The Nigerian FA will then make a formal request to FIFA with Sam’s letter as evidence.

Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi said he will be glad to have the process started immediately.

“I’m just the coach but I’m excited to have such a player commit to play for us. It will be good to start the process of completing his switch immediately.

“It’s good the FA has gone through this same experience in the past (for Victor Moses and Shola Ameobi),” he said to supersport.com.

Last year, Nigeria had to go through same process for Moses and Ameobi, who had both played for England youth teams, before they were cleared by Fifa last year.

Sam is, however, eligible for Nigeria owing to FIFA’s removal of age limit for players who had already played for a nation at youth level which is stated in Article 18 of the world soccer body’s statute.

It is now doubtful that the former Hamburger SV player will feature for Nigeria at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
