    No Yobo for Venezuela warm-up

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has ruled out injured captain Joseph Yobo from a friendly against Venezuela next Wednesday.

Also ruled out for the game are Kano Pillars stars Papa Idris and Reuben Gabriel, who are recovering from injury.

“The players are just returning from injury and I think we should not rush them back for the Venezuela game,” Keshi said Wednesday in Abuja.

Villarreal striker Ikechukwu uche, who was the team’s leading scorer in the AFCON qualifiers with three goals, has also been left out.

“For Ikechukwu Uche, I have seen him enough so he would not be listed and Emmanuel Emenike is still recovering from injury,” explained the Nigeria handler.

The friendly in Miami will form part of the Eagles build-up to the AFCON in South Africa, where Nigeria are in Group C in Nelspruit along with champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

  • Amokachi at Glo Soccer Academy as 5 emerge from Abuja centre

Amokachi at Glo Soccer Academy as 5 emerge from Abuja centre

Impressed with the quality of talents he saw at the Glo Soccer Academy screening venue in Abuja on Monday, Daniel “The Bull” Amokachi has told the global soccer community that Africa is coming up fast to rule the world of soccer.

Thrilled by the skillful display of football by the youths who thronged the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, for the screening, Amokachi advised the enthusiastic boys to take their training very seriously and ensure full utilisation of the opportunity offered by the Glo Soccer Academy to etch their names in the world of football.

According to him, “Africans are gradually coming to dominate the centre stage of global football. I am convinced that the future of world football is in Africa. Foreign coaches know this and that is why they are beginning to show interest in our boys.”

Meanwhile, five youths emerged from the Abuja screening centre which ended on Tuesday. They are Godfrey Peter, 15, of Government Secondary School, Minna; Aliu Yakubu, 14, of Sunna High School, Jos; Obongwu Anthony, 17, of Ogirioko Memorial Secondary School, Makurdi; Abdulrahman Umar, 14, of Sunnah High School, Jos; and Sunday Momoh, 16, of Kakuri Day Secondary School, Kaduna.

They will join the rest boys at the Glo Soccer Academy Reality TV show in Lagos.

Amokachi noted that the rough economic climate in Africa and culture helped to strengthen African lads to compete favourably with their counterparts in Europe, adding that “today, there are two or three African boys in almost all the top clubs in Europe competing very well with their peers from other parts of the world.”

He advised the boys to be mindful of their poor background and utilise the opportunity offered by Glo Soccer Academy now for a better future.

According to the former national striker, “I give credit to Globacom for setting up this Academy that ensures that the boys blend football with academics.

“First, I am impressed by the level of the technical team led by Victor Ikpeba, working on the Academy. They are great African footballers of our time, and I have no doubt that they will do a great job in the Academy. I know they will go for the best because they know what it takes to be there,” Amokachi said.

“Again, if Glo is partnering with Manchester United to send the winners to the club’s training school, and offer scholarship, it means that the company has guaranteed brighter future for the boys”, he said. He therefore encouraged the boys to work hard to make the final list. “However, don’t feel bad if you don’t make the final list as you will agree with me that everybody cannot be selected. But I am convinced that all of you here have a great future in football,” the Bull enthused.

Coach Baffoe and his technical team advised those that did not make the selection not to be discouraged as they have a bright future in football. He praised the boys for their performances and regretted that Abuja centre could not produce more than the five selected. He advised them to try out their luck next year.

The final screening will hold in Lagos on November 11 after which the train will move to Benin Republic.

  • Vieira tips Rekik for Manchester City success

Manchester City football development executive Patrick Vieira has lavished praise upon teenage defender Karim Rekik, revealing that he expects the Dutchman to become a prominent member of the Premier League club’s senior squad.

The centre-back was signed by City in 2011, having come through the Feyenoord youth academy in his native Netherlands, and the former Arsenal legend is not shy of imposing some lofty expectations on the 17-year-old.

“Karim has the natural air of a central defender,” Vieira told De Telegraaf. “This boy has so much talent, if he doesn’t make it, it will be a big failure for us.

“Of course we put a lot of pressure on ourselves but Karim also knows he has the responsibility to make it to the top. He looks older and he also made his debut in Mancini’s first team, but he still is only 17. He’s one of the best in our academy.”

Rekik himself has also spoken of his future at Manchester City, insisting that he has no regrets about joining a club where competition for senior places is perhaps more intense than at Feyenoord.

  • Messi wins awards, Xavi Barcelona’s soul, says Larsson

Messi wins awards, Xavi Barcelona’s soul, says Larsson

Henrik Larsson has taken the time to praise Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, but feels that Xavi is the Catalans’ real key player.

The former Sweden international played alongside both players during his two-year spell at Camp Nou between 2004 and 2006, and still keeps an eye on the Blaugrana’s progress.

“[Messi] was only a kid back then, but already an excellent player. Anyone who says that he knew Messi would become this good is lying, though,” he told El Pais.

“He has skill, vision and is always in control. He is a phenomenon and deserves every award that he wins.

“However, Xavi is the soul of the club in my opinion. He never misses a pass. He plays in a very difficult position and doesn’t score many goals. He is the key to Barcelona’s success, though.”

The 41-year-old, who scored over 170 league goals for Celtic, then went on to discuss the upcoming Champions League clash between the Hoops and Barca, and feels the Blaugrana are vulnerable at the moment due to their injury troubles at the back.

“Right now you can upset Barcelona a little because they are without Carles Puyol and maybe Gerard Pique too.

“Daniel Alves has only just come back so it is not the back four that Barca would prefer to have.

“You saw it in the first game at set-pieces they were a little bit short and there is no doubt that they are missing Pique and Puyol who are used to competing in the air.”

  • Vertonghen calls for Spurs response

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has backed his team-mates to put Saturday’s defeat to Wigan behind them.

Spurs surrendered fourth place in the Premier League with a 1-0 defeat to Roberto Martinez’s men but have a chance to respond with a Europa League win against Maribor on Thursday.

“The team is strong enough to come back from this defeat,” Vertonghen told the club’s official website.

“We have a lot of important games ahead, important games in Europe and difficult away games. We have to stick together. We know we’re strong in away games and we can win at any away ground.”

The former Ajax centre-back was nevertheless regretful on the subject of the Wigan defeat, which saw Spurs miss a chance to skip clear of the likes of Everton and Arsenal in the Premier League.

He added: “We had problems with their system, but normally we turn it around.

“We just couldn’t do it and it was a shame for the fans because it was a big opportunity with Arsenal losing, plus Fulham and Everton drawing. Overall, it was very disappointing.”

Head coach of the Spartak side Unai Emery in a media chat after the team’s training session in Portugal ahead Wednesday’s UCL clash against Porto shade light on the Nigerian’s absence in the squad.

“Emenike is not here with us because of his back injury.

“The Nigerian is now in Germany, where he is undergoing a medical examination for the back injury he sustained last Saturday,” Emery stated.

The gaffer hopes that the result of the medical examination comes out good as he considers the Nigerian a vital player to his 2012/2013 campaign.

AFCON 2012: ‘Eagles good for the Cup’

The Nigeria Football and other Supporters Club (NFSC) said on Monday that it would fully back the Super Eagles to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.

Rafiu Ladipo, President-General of the club, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the club’s supporters were of the belief that their presence could propel the Eagles to victory at the AFCON.

“We are making these efforts because we believe that our impact can motivate the Eagles to go all out for victory in South Africa. We have a good team; what they need at the moment is for us (the Supporters Club), to play our own part and we are making plans for that,’’ he said.

Ladipo said he believed the national team’s campaign could be boosted by the supporters club. “Nigeria can win the cup in South Africa.’’

He said that what had kept the club going had been its patriotic drive at setting a positive international image for the country.

“This is because we believe in Nigeria. It is also because we believe that we have roles to play in giving the country a good image. We are committed toward ensuring that our national teams get the best of support because we believe that our influence is always making a big difference. Right now, we are among the top 10 rated supporters clubs in the world and it tells how influential we have been to sports in the country,’’ he said.

    Djokovic ready for final push

Djokovic will finish 2012 as world number one for the second successive year, after losing the ranking to Roger Federer in July [Reuters]

A tired sounding Novak Djokovic says he will need to draw on all his mental and physical strength if he is to crown another stellar season with the ATP World Tour Finals title.

The Serb heads into his opening match with Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Monday evening safe in the knowledge that he will end the year as the world number one for the second consecutive year.

Whether he can add a sixth title to his 2012 resume, which includes the Australian Open, will depend on how his body has recovered since he was knocked out of the Paris Masters by American Sam Querrey on Wednesday.

He admitted after the match he began to struggle physically during the second set, having won the first.

“I want to give my best and at this moment I’m trying to be as optimistic as possible,” Djokovic, winner of the season-ending showpiece when it was staged in Shanghai in 2008, told a Sunday news conference at London’s 02 Arena which is hosting the event for the fourth year running.

“It’s expected to not always on your top form and especially at this time of year the effects of the long season can influence you physically and mentally also, but as I said, this is a very important tournament.

“I definitely want to do well, find the mental and physical strength to perform my best and we’ll see if that best will be good enough.”

As well as a weary body, reports from Serbia have said the 25-year-old’s father was ill, an issue Djokovic was not keen to elaborate on.

“It’s not the right moment for me to be talking about these things right, I just want to talk about the tennis tournament.
