  • Martins, Igiebor crash out

It was a sad night for Nigerians in Spain on Thursday as two of the country’s ambassadors saw their sides crash out of the Kings Cup otherwise known as the Copa del Rey.

Obafemi Martins’ Levante surprisingly went down 0-1 to lower division side, UD Melilla with Velasco getting the winner after 38 minutes from the penalty spot.

Obagoal, who has been in impressive form this season, failed to add to his four La Liga strikes as Levante bowed out with a whimper to unheralded opposition.

Elsewhere, Nosa Igiebor and his Real Betis teammates failed to build on their La Liga victory over Valencia at the weekend as they lost 0-1 to Valladolid.

Igiebor has been a regular for Betis this term but has yet to score for the La Liga club since completing a summer move from Israeli side, Hapoel Tel Aviv.

The 21-year-old has played five games for Real Betis this season.

  • Super Falcons to get improved win bonus

Super Falcons to get improved win bonus

The Super Falcons will get their win bonus improved more than the present 3000 dollars fixed for each of their victories in the first round if they retain the African Women’s Championship (AWC) crown, a top official has revealed.

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team booked a place in the semi final of the AWC on Thursday in Bata after a lacklustre 3-0 win over Ethiopia and with their arrival in Malabo the city which housed their last group match against Cote D Ivoire the team has been assured of additional remuneration.

In an exclusive chat with the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF)’s Director of Competitions, Dr Mohammed Sanusi opined that the Falcons will have their win bonus reviewed if they win their semi-final and the final.

He expressed confidence that the Falcons would have no problem adding to the previous 6 titles they had won at the end of the 2012 edition and asserted that the resistance put up by the Ethiopians was expected based on the gulf in class between Nigeria and the East African.

“The Falcons will get an improved win bonus if they beat their semi final opponent and also overcome their final foes. The 3000 dollars is fixed for each win in the group stage. It is logical there will be improvement in the semi and final matches respectively. Ethiopia proved to be a hard nut to crack because they knew they were against a top side,” Dr Sanusi said in defence of Falcons’ 3-0 win over Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, the reigning AWC champions arrived at Malabo Friday morning ahead of their Sunday’s game against the Ivorians women’s side and had a feel of the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo in the afternoon (2.00pm).

  • Nigerian Women League hail Falcons

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women League Chief (Mrs.) Dilichukwu Onyedinma has commended the Senior National Women team, Super Falcons for their resilience in ensuring that they outwit all opposition so far, to qualify for the semi-finals of the Africa Women Championship holding in Equatorial Guinea.

Speaking in Abuja, the NFF Executive Committee member said “the Super Falcons deserves all the commendations. Their performance so far has shown that they are in the championship to retain the trophy they won two years ago in South Africa. We all saw how they subdued the Lioness of Cameroun despite the poor playing pitch, and also overwhelmed the Ethiopians in their last match. I have all the confidence that the girls would over run the Ivoirians when they meet later next week. I implore them to remain focused and determined as ever to retain the trophy”.

Onyedinma said that the Board of the NFF is committed to ensuring that they not only retain the trophy, but perform creditably well in the Women World Cup in Canada next year. She appealed for the total support all Nigerians towards achieving this feat.

It would be recalled that the Super Falcons has won all the various editions of the championship, with exception of that held in Equatorial Guinea in 2009.

  • Eagles booked into 4-star resort for AFCON

Nigeria are guaranteed four-star treatment during the AFCON as they are booked at the Ingwenyama Conference and Sport Resort in Nelspruit.

According to an official release by the AFCON local organisers, Nigeria are booked into this spectacular, 65-hectare facility, which has already played the perfect host to several top football teams including Chile, Bafana Bafana, Niger and Thailand.

Besides the world-class facilities on offer at the sport resort, it also has FIFA-approved football pitches where the Eagles will also train for the Nations Cup.

There is also a high-performance gym at this four-star hotel.

Hospitality experts rate this facility as excellent for a large of people, which would be the case as the Eagles would be accompanied by a large band of travelling fans.

The resort is also just a few kilometres from the 45,000-capacity 2010 World Cup Stadium, the Mbombela Stadium, which will stage Group C matches involving Nigeria, Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

It is only three hours by road from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Ethiopia are booked at the Protea Hotel The Winkler, which only recently welcomed Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, for a 2013 Africa Youth Championship qualifier.

Burkina Faso will put up at the Mercure Hotel and train at the Nelspruit Rugby Stadium, while defending champions Zambia will stay at Protea Hotel and train at Ka Nyamazane.

  • Akpoborie makes case for Sidney Sam

Ex-Eagles star Jonathan Akpoborie has said Bayer Leverkusen star Sidney Sam would be a most welcome addition for Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON.

Sam, whose father is Nigerian, has featured for Germany at age-grade level, but both Samson Siasia and now Stephen Keshi have made efforts to convince him to opt for Nigeria.

This season, the 23-year-old star has scored three goals in four appearances for Leverkusen including one of the goals that beat Bayern Munich to halt their amazing winning run in the Bundesliga.

Akpoborie told MTNFootball.com that Sidney Sam is the missing link in the Eagles midfield and his German Bundesliga experience would be of great value to the team in South Africa.

“Keshi has been doing well no doubt, I salute his courage for encouraging the home-based players. But for the team to go all the way in South Africa, there are still some work to do on the team,” said Akpoborie, who featured for several German clubs including Wolfsburg.

“Keshi is in charge but my advise to him is to stick to the bulk of players who faced Liberia and bring in Sidney Sam.

“Sam is needed in the midfield of the Eagles, he has the quality to make the team better. He deserves a chance and he has shown interest in playing for Nigeria, so let’s get him on board.”

Akpoborie would also want England-based central defender Nedum Onuoha to be reconsidered by the Eagles.

“I would also suggest Nedum Onuoha be called to strengthen the defence,” he offered.

  • Sodje fires warning shot

At a time when allegations of racism in football has become a source of worry, former Super Eagles defender and Bury ace Efe Sodje has declared he will not hesistate to walk off the pitch if racially abused.

The 40-year-old who played for the Super Eagles between 2000 and 2004 making nine appearances and scoring a goal, revealed in a chat with BBC World Service that he had been a victim of racial abuse earlier in his career.

“Let’s say it happens on Saturday – I’m going to say the game should be stopped,” said the former Nigeria international centre-back.

“Whoever shouts it out will be picked out. I will make sure that person would be pointed out and shamed.”

And veteran Sodje is confident he would not suffer any punishment from the authorities or from his club if he took that course of action.

He continued: “The club will back it, especially our manager [Kevin Blackwell]. He’s 100% behind that.

“He’s been really annoyed with it – the way things are going – and he said he would back whatever we are doing.

“We are not going to accept it as this club here.”

Sodje, who is with his 10th club and has played more than 500 games in English football, thinks recent controversies involving racism could have been easily avoided if stronger punishments had been in place.

“It flared up massively with the John Terry case,” added Sodje. “That’s what kicked it off again big time and the way they never reacted to that case.

“I don’t feel let down [by the authorities] but they should have stepped it up and set an example from the top of the FA. If you take drugs and they catch you, you’re banned. It’s as simple as that.”

  • Jonathan to preside over Eko 2012 flag hoisting

Jonathan to preside over Eko 2012 flag hoisting

The Local Organising Committee of the 18th National Sports Festival said on Thursday that President Goodluck Jonathan had been scheduled to lead Saturday’s flag hoisting ceremony for the festival in Lagos.

The festival, tagged “Eko 2012” is scheduled for November27 to December 9 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

According to a statement signed by Kweku Tandoh, the Secretary of the committee, in Lagos, Jonathan will be joined by the 36 state governors and the FCT minister.

‘’The event symbolises the participation of all the federating units that make up Nigeria in the forthcoming festival.

“On Saturday, November 3, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State would be hosting Mr. President and all the other state governors at the flag hoisting ceremony.

‘’The importance of this is to confirm the participation of all the states and to show that the festival is about the unity of Nigeria as one entity,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Tandoh as saying in the statement.

The statement said that 11,000 athletes were expected to participate in the fiesta.

Based on initial registration figures, the LOC envisaged a maximum of 11,500 athletes, but the number is expected to drop after the zonal elimination, where some state teams failed to qualify, the statement added.

  • Keshi: Obagoal is outstanding

    Keshi: Obagoal is outstanding

Eagles coach Stephen Keshi says that he is shopping for a couple of exceptional players from the Venezuela friendly to add to his squad for the Nations Cup in South Africa.

“If I want to bring a player who hasn’t played under me before, that player has to be an outstanding player, like (Obafemi) Martins,” Keshi said.

“I have got to a stage where I need three, four such players who could bring something tangible to the team and then I will focus on the rest of boys and with the numbers of days we have now, something good would happen.”

  • Turkish language class: Yobo goes to school

Turkish language class: Yobo goes to school

For fear violating an obligatory term in his contract with Fenerbahce, Super Eagles skipper Joseph Yobo on Thursday began attending Turkish classes at his club’s Can Bartu Facility.

The Nigerian, who started learning the basics of Turkish with tutorial aids, is expected to spend a total of 100 hours with the club’s language tutors.

Yobo, and seven of his non-Turkish mates, after the Turkish course programme, is expected to be self-sufficient in communicating with Fenerbahce’s technical staff and teammates on a daily basis during training.

Manager Aykut Kocaman recently complained about a lack of understanding and team cohesion due to the communication barrier.

Kocaman was recently quoted as saying, “Hiring translators for our foreign players make their lives easier in the short-term, however, it ends up preventing their adaptation to the club and country.

“Nobody is above the club; neither the players nor myself.”

Kocaman believes that if all the members of his squad can understand footballing terms and basic commands in Turkish it will benefit the team as a whole and help foreign players settle in.

  • ‘Eagles overdue for another title’

    ‘Eagles overdue for another title’

Super Eagles defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has declared that Nigeria are long overdue for another AFCON title after their last conquest in 1994.

The Jos-born star told MTNFootball.com in an exclusive interview the Eagles will outclass Burkina Faso and Ethiopia on their way out of Group C of next year’s tournament.

The man-mountain central defender, who has been the most consistent player from the NPL in the national team since coach Stephen Keshi took charge last year, also revealed how the misfortunes that affected his footballing brothers almost cut short his own career.

He has been appointed new skipper of Warri Wolves and said he will not play for another club in the NPL, while his dream league is the German Bundesliga.

How was it making your debut for the Super Eagles?

Egwuekwe: I felt great; it was a dream come true for me.

Which have been your best games for Nigeria so far?

I would pick two. The friendly against Peru in Lima and then the AFCON qualifier against Liberia away in Monrovia.

Nigeria have been drawn in the same group as defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. How would you rate this group?

It is an easy group. Zambia are the only team who will give us a bit of a tough time, but Ethiopia and Burkina Faso are nowhere close to us. I see us progressing to the next stage from the group as leaders. I am not underrating these teams, but we are not in same class.

How has it been as a regular player of the Eagles?

Honestly, it is a big surprise to me. If anyone had told me by this time last year that I would be playing for the Eagles, I would have disagreed.

I have always dreamt to play for my country, but I didn’t think it would come this early. I give God the glory and thank coach Stephen Keshi for giving me the chance.

How has it been in training camp with the foreign-based pros?

It has been encouraging so far. There is no discrimination between us. We are just like one big family. In fact, my friends in the Eagles are Efe Ambrose, Ahmed Musa and Obiora Nwankwo. There is no difference at all in camp between the players.

What have you learnt playing alongside skipper Joseph Yobo, Ambrose and Elderson Echiejile in the Eagles?

Playing alongside these top players has been great, particularly Yobo. It has been a big experience for me. I have learnt a lot from them.

Which game has been your toughest?

That is our match against Liberia in Monrovia in September. We arrived two days before the game and our hotel was close to the stadium, people were at the stadium singing, I could not sleep. It was a tough game.

What are the clubs you have played for?

I played for Adamawa United, OUK and NPA.

Which league do you wish to feature in?

I love the German Bundesliga and would be on top of the world if I could play there.

    Who are your role models?

Uche Okechukwu and (Nemanja) Vidic of Manchester United.

Where will you play next season?

Warri Wolves. I can’t leave Wolves for any team in Nigeria. I am a Warri Wolves player.

How did your parents first react to your choice of football as a career?

It was so difficult for me to play football because my father didn’t want me to because of the experiences of two of my older brothers who also chose to play football.

    What were their experiences?

We are four boys in my family and the first-born chose football and was poisoned while playing for Greater Tomorrow. My father spent a lot of money before he survived. The second boy was playing for NIPOST FC of Jos and there he got injured; he almost lost his life.

So, when I came with the same thing, hell was let loose that at a time my father threatened to disown me if I didn’t stop playing football.

But I would jump fences to attend trainings. I did that for about three years before I joined a professional team, even at that he still told me to quit.

Rather reluctantly, he has started accepting that I was born to play football because now he has been hearing about my exploits.

What are your targets for AFCON 2013?

The trophy. It has been a long time this has happened for Nigeria and I wish to be part of the team to do it.
