  • Secretary urges corporate bodies to back triathlon

Gloria Obajimi, the Secretary, Nigeria Triathlon Union (NTU) has appealed to corporate organisations to sponsor triathlon on a trial run. She explained that the sport was relatively new and needed to be tried.

Obajimi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that there were lots of hidden talents in the country, saying the sport needed attention to ensure that the tri-athletes would participate in international competitions.

“We have been talking to state governments– the Bayelsa State governor has already shown interest. Triathlon comprises swimming, cycling and running. It was introduced in the country in 2007. A good bicycle like those used at the London Olympics cost about 2,500 dollars and at the All Africa Games, we bought three bicycles, but they are not enough. It is costly to acquire a good bicycle. The bicycles cannot be used by just anyone because they are customised to the tri-athletes,’’ she said.

She said the competition to be organised by the Lagos State Triathlon Association would be commendable, stressing that grassroots developmental programme were necessary to develop the sport.

She noted that majority of the athletes were from the Northern parts of the country, saying the security issues were making it difficult for the athletes to have access to free training facilities.

“One of the things stalling the staging of the championship is security issues facing the Northern parts of the country.

  • Oboabona out of Al Ahly clash

Sunshine Stars skipper Godfrey Oboabona will miss the first CAF Champions League semi-final against Al Ahly today due to suspension.

The reliable defender, who can play as a right full back or central defender, told MTNFootball.com that he is very disappointed to miss this game because he picked up his second booking in the final group game at Esperance of Tunisia.

“I am going to miss the game because of cards suspension. I am very sad that I won’t play against Al Ahly in the first leg, but I can’t help it,” he informed MTNFootball.com.

“However, I am very sure my team mates will do well and get the needed victory. I wish them best of luck in the game.”

Oboabona has therefore stayed back with the Super Eagles in Abuja ahead of the all-important Africa cup of Nations qualifier against the Lone Star of Liberia billed for Calabar on October 13.

Ahly will also be without the legendary Mohamed Aboutrika for Saturday’s clash in Ijebu-Ode as he is still under a two-month suspension slapped on him by his club.

  • ODSG charges Sunshine to defeat Al Ahly

The Ondo State Government on Friday charged Sunshine Stars FC of Akure to make the country proud by defeating visiting Al Ahly of Egypt in Ijebu-Ode today.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sunshine will host Al Ahly in the first leg of their semi-final match of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

The commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Yekini Olanipekun, told NAN on Friday in Akure that the government was solidly supporting the team as its own. Olanipekun said the government had made all the necessary provisions for the team to emerge victorious.

“I believe in the team we have, and I know that Al Ahly is the champion of African football. But they are coming to meet us at home and I know the team will show them the stuff they are made of. The team has been encouraged by the state government to enhance their performance; it is not an easy task reaching the last four in African club championships,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Al Ahly delegation had arrived in Ijebu-Ode on Thursday night for the clash.

  • Analogue sport coaches

The role of a sport coach in the overall development of sport in Nigeria cannot be over emphasized as it has often proven to be a very fundamental component in the pyramid of sport development in any country. It is often said that the player or athlete’s performance on the field of play is a reflection of his/her coach’s ability. This saying, however, may be challenged by other school of thoughts.

The coaching crew if I may be permitted to use this classification has passed through different phases with time in Nigeria and one is very concerned with the current charade of coaching crew as is presently being experienced in Nigeria. A sport coach is one who has been trained in a specific sport on the concept, psychology, techniques and rules of his/her chosen sport. This goes without saying that the coach must be certificated by a well recognized body which is empowered to provide such specific sport coaching training.

It is unfortunate that these classes of people are only remembered when they might have possibly climbed to the top e.g by either training a gold winning athlete or team on the international stage. Given the above postulation therefore, it is expedient that we take a critical look at the role of coaches and their contribution to the development of sport in Nigeria

While one may not expressly say Nigeria cannot boast of world-class coaches in most sports, it will be unfair if I fail to make the point that most of our coaches in Nigeria today may as well be referred to as “Analogue Sport Coaches.” This is so because today’s sport has gone beyond the trend of usual mechanical training module as was the case in times past. It relies more today on scientifically proven and tested strategies and tactics.

Our coaches today many of whom are either ex-athletes, or ex-bag carriers of past coaches are not adequately prepared for the job they claim to be doing. A classical case is the fact that most of our coaches are not in touch with the current trends and innovations in their chosen sport e.g the use of sport computer training soft ware, internet services just to mention a few. Most coaches despite their non- conformity with the current trends have also failed to update their knowledge in their chosen sport.

Unfortunately, we have these classes of Analogue Sport Coaches parading our various sports councils and sport federations with a Diploma Certificate obtained from the National Institute for Sports (NIS). These ‘Analog Sport Coaches’ are always quick to tell you that they are coaches.

Little wonder we see on the pitch of play the display of dart in comprehending the required technicality of their chosen sport, when in the case of football during half time you still find a coach coming back to the second half with little or no tactical change in their initial game plan, thus exposing their low technical depth or a case of wrong substitution of players.

Any country that fails to define the proper classification and categorization of its coaches through nationally acceptable grading standards for all its sport coaches will give room for mediocrity in sport coaching to thrive, which is a classical case of calculated investment in failed sporting programmes.

It is expedient that we reject as a nation coaches who are not properly prepared for their chosen carreers by this I mean our coaches should be properly informed and adequately certified in their chosen sport. This trend if encouraged will go a long way in ensuring that the very foundation of sports development is properly executed, while also ensuring that the coaching industry is sanitized and professionalized so that we can boast as a nation of having professionals who will help us in the actualization of our sport development programme.

I am convinced that Nigeria has got the capability to be an exporter of sport coaches especially in those sports that we are regarded as being strong, but to achieve this feat we need to address the all important lacuna that has presented itself over time in the area of Analog Sport Coaches taking charge of the implementation of our fundamental sport development programme. A coach ought to be a good teacher, trainer, confidant, psychologist, administrator, strategist, philosopher and planner.

Considering our current sporting trend, it has become very important not to overlook the disappointing scenario which reflects the fact that most of our coaches are either ignorant or out of touch. Without proper coaches, certification and grading we stand the chance of remaining where we are as is evident in the performance of our athletes’ especially on the world stage.

We need to break the current barrier of these Analogue Sport Coaches that has infiltrated the system thereby serving as a clog in the wheel of progress as it relates to actualizing the sport development agenda. There is the need for every sport organization to ensure that anyone who so desires to be employed as a sport coach is able to present a proper certificate and demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of the chosen sport with a capacity to be compliant and adaptable to current changes in the world of the specific sport.

There is therefore the need for us to jettison the negative situation which we have over time recognized as the norm, whereby we find people who are employed as sport coaches without any certification except for the fact that they were at one time a professional athlete in their chosen sport. This must be rejected in its totality.

There should be well defined criteria for the assessment and appointment of sport coaches which as a matter of fact will produce competent and qualified coaches that will be employed thus, promoting the concept of coaching professionalism in Nigeria.

  • Osaze may start from bench

    Osaze may start from bench

West Brom striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie is available again after serving a three-match ban but might not start at home to Queens Park Rangers.

Odemwingie was sent off at Fulham for aiming an impetuous kick at Sascha Riether.

In his absence, both Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku have impressed and Albion find themselves sixth in the Premier League table.

Baggies boss Steve Clarke welcomes the return of the Nigeria international but stresses that there is now competition for places among the forwards at the Hawthorns.

Clarke said: “Peter is available again. He is in the squad. He has trained well. But Peter has had to sit on the sidelines for the last three games through his own fault.

“He accepts that, he accepted that at the time, and we just welcome him back to the squad.

“If and when he gets the chance to make amends, he is more than welcome to do that.

“But everyone has got to battle for their place. It has been like that since the start of the season.

“We have sat here on a number of occasions and spoken about the competition for places, how it gives me a headache.

“Nothing has changed, it is the same situation now and it is one that we relish.”

  • Banyana Banyana plot Falcons fall

Youth Africa’s Banyana Banyana have commenced preparation in a bid to overthrow Nigeria’s Falcons at the CAF African Women Championship 2012 in Equatorial Guinea from 28 October to 11 November.

Already Banyana head coach Joseph Mkhonza is set to be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the 21 players who will represent South Africa as the team has been hard at training at the national camp which started in Johannesburg on Monday, 01 October.

With overseas-based players in goalkeeper Roxanne Barker, and midfielders Kylie Ann Louw and Nompumelelo Nyandeni set to arrive in South Africa next Tuesday, the race for places in the team is hotting up.

“The Banyana Banyana players realise the importance of doing well at the CAF African Women Championship 2012 which will have a healthy impact on our current world and African ranking and nobody wants to miss out on competing in Africa’s showpiece event,” said Mkhonza.

Banyana Banyana are currently ranked No 56 in the world and No 4 in Africa. The national team finished as bronze medallists at the CAF African Women Championship 2010 held in Ekurhuleni, near Johannesburg with Nigeria’s Falcons pipping Equatorial Guinea for top spot.

  • FIFA agent urges referees to attend courses

Edwin Odogwu, a FIFA licenced agent, has appealed to referees to attend international courses in a bid to enhancing their chances of being invited to officiate at international events.

Odogwu, also an International Basketball Federation (FIBA) agent, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, in Lagos, that refereeing in Nigeria was still lagging behind.

According to him, all the referees need is re-orientation, training, both locally and internationally to update their knowledge.

“I would not say we have gotten to that level because even at the top, there are still some mistakes and some things that should be done to make refereeing better for the game. Back home in Nigeria, refereeing is poor. The referees need orientation and training.

“They need to attend courses both locally and abroad, so that they will be kept abreast of the new rules, the changes that have occurred in FIFA in the past few months. If you are a referee and you do not know what has happened, whether there have been changes and even in your duties as a referee. We just do what we know, we have not updated as it were.’’

He noted that if referees did not attend the FIFA Graded courses, they might not be recognised as FIFA licenced referees, saying that individuals like Peter Edibe, through these courses, earned recognition.

“Edibe is one fellow I respect because he has earned his recognition as an elite referee. If he had not gone for the FIFA training, he would not be called to officiate.

“Other referees should strive to attend such courses by not waiting for the government’s budget allocated to their federations. How many referees will the government recognise and sponsor? They should help themselves to ensure that they attain greater heights because sports have gone beyond what it was then.’’

  • Falcons ready to defend AWC title – NFA

The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) on Friday in Abuja said the Super Falcons is at the peak of preparations to defend the African Women Championship (AWC) title.

The NFA’s Director of Technical, Emmanuel Ikpeme told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the team will do better than they did in the last edition. NAN reports that the Falcons will be representing Nigeria at the eight edition of the Championship holding in Equatorial Guinea from Oct. 28 to Nov. 11

“The preparation is going on well as the coaching crew started on a very good note. After the qualifiers, the Coach, Kadiri Ikhana had gone round with some of his coaching crew to identify more players. That is an opportunity to make the selective process a competitive one, and also to have a rich pool of players that it can select from.

“They are at the peak of their preparations and I also know that the coach has made provisions for some tested foreign based players to join the team at the appropriate time,’’ he said.

Ikpeme added that with the pedigree the team has in Africa, it would go for the Championship to prove its worth as the best in Africa.

“Fortunately we have a pedigree at that level of competition in Africa. We have been winning the championship since it started and we lost only once. Presently, we are the defending champions and I don’t want to believe that these girls will go to Equatorial Guinea and just let go. I am sure they will want to go there and show that indeed what they did in South Africa in the last edition was not a mistake,’’Ikpeme said.

The director of technical stressed that the hard work the team had put in at the training ground would yield them bountiful.

“I want to believe that they will prove themselves indeed as Super Falcons of Nigeria and the very best team in Africa,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the Super Falcons are drawn in Group B with Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire and Ethiopia. They defeated South Africa 4-2 in the 2010 edition held in South Africa from Oct. 31 to Nov. 14 to clinch the title

  • Kalu Uche fires blank

OUT-of-favour Super Eagles ace, Kalu Uche played all 90 minutes in Kasimpasa’s 1-0 defeat away to Trabzonspor in a Turkey – Super Lig Match day 7 fixture on Friday night.

The Nigeria international, who is joint top scorer in the Turkish topflight with Galatasaray’s Umut Bulut on five goals each, failed to deliver Kasimpasa from defeat after Trabzonspor took an early lead through Onur Adin in the 7th minute of the tie.

The encounter which attracted six yellow cards to both sides thus leaves Uche and pals on third spot of the Super Lig log with 12 points from seven match, a point behind leaders, Galatasaray who have a game in hand.

  • Balogun says competition will be keen

Dayo Balogun, a sports analyst, on Friday observed that the steps being taken by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the forthcoming 18th National Sports Festival (NFS), were quite commendable.

Balogun, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, stressed that the games should dwell mainly on the harnessing and grooming of budding talents. He urged organisers of the festival to take into consideration the fallout from the 2012 London Olympics Games, to rectify the glaring lapses in Team Nigeria’s performance during the Games.

“The theme during this festival should be about the development of sports at the grassroots, considering our poor performance at the London Olympics Games. Preparations for the sports festival are highly commendable, a peep at most of the 36 states of the federation; you will realise that they have been grooming their teams thoroughly. We should aim at catching these athletes young, in order to nurturethem for participation at international competitions,’’ he said.

When asked whether the recurring issue of “mercenary athletes’’ would not mar the cardinal objectves, Balogun told NAN that it would be impossible.

“ Honestly, I don’t see that happening because an athlete has to be registered in a state for at least a year. The complaints about mercenaries will not be tolerated this time round because efforts are being made to curb this recurring decimal,’’ the sports analyst said.

Balogun added that most states would strive to adhere to the spirit and letter of the NFS, whose emphasis is on the grooming of genuine grassroots talents. He also said that as the host, Team Lagos athletes would have to double their efforts and guard against developments that could jeopardise their chances of winning medals.

“Most states would naturally not want to ruin their chances over something that could be avoided. Its natural for participating states to come with high hopes– and the fact that the event is taking place in Lagos. Lagos, as a city offers some attraction, and people just don’t want to come for nothing, they want to win,’’ he said.
