  • Eaglets play PlayStation football

Suleymanu Kabirou, captain of under-pressure Nigerien Junior Menas, has sensationally said ahead of this weekend’s Under-17 qualifier that the Golden Eaglets would be hard to beat with their tic-tac style of play.

Speaking with his Nigerian confidant after their 4-1 loss a fortnight ago, the gifted Kabirou said he was surprised at the Golden Eaglets’ tactical awareness and their near flawless style of play.

“We were shocked with the good handling of the ball by the Golden Eaglets,” ‘AB’ reportedly said.” It was as if we were watching football on a PlayStation machine.”

There were many outstanding displays by the Eaglets in that battle of Niamey but AB was quoted as saying that a spectacular move shortly at the begining of the second half by the Nigerian youngsters would remain indelible in his memory. The Golden Eaglets actually completed a sequence of passess that would make even followers of Barcelona green with envy.

“I was just watching in awe when they were just passing the ball,” he confessed. “It was as good as watching football on PlayStation and I think the Golden Eaglets are a very good side.”

Emmanuel Amuneke, Golden Eaglets’ assistant coach who played for FC Barcelona in his heyday, said it has been worthwhile working with the players.

“One thing we have achieved is changing the orientation of the players and we are happy with their responses to what we are teaching them,” Amuneke stated.” Work is in progress, we’re building them mentally and hopefully, they should be able to give us what we want at the end of the day.”

Lagos amateur boxers on Thursday at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Grand Ballroom, Lagos showed class at the annual International Amateur Boxing Championship against boxers of the Repton Boxing Club from the United Kingdom in six keenly-contested bouts winning 4-2.

The Championship which is organised by Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) in conjunction with the Lagos Amateur Boxing Association (LABA), under the patronage of the Lagos State Government, will continue on today at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium by 3pm prompt.

Chairman of LBHF, Adebayo Olawale Edun said the competition can only get better in terms of the standard and the committment to have it ranked among one of the best amateur boxing competitions in the world.

“You can see for yourselves that the boxers gave a good account of themselves. They will continue on Saturday which is the monthly version of the boxing show. Boxing lovers were thrilled to watch some exciting boxing tonight, and the expectation is high,” he said.

In his view, Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development in Lagos, Wahid Enitan Oshodi commended the boxers for their performances

“Well, we are very pleased, the boxers are always in top shape. Christian Abua, Young energic boxer, I think I am satisfied. Fijabi as usual, the star boxer of the night, fantastic boxer.

“For the sports festival, we will go into closed camping for two weeks. We are very hopeful, our performance from the last festival was not what we expected it to be, but I think we have done a lot of work on the athletes, so we will pull a few surprises in our usual sports; Gymnastics, Cricket. The most important thing for us is that we have a lot of young athletes that we’ve been working on in the last four years and we hope they will do very well.

“Lagos State is not worried about poaching any more; we have taken care of that. The allowances are being paid, their equipment have been provided. Delta State is usually very strong, Edo State, but with all these I think Lagos can pull a surprise at the next festival,” Oshodi said.

In the six-bout contest, Otto Joseph of Lagos lost to Ohara Davies of England in the 62kg category, but Tommy Tear of England could not withstand the hard punches coming from the gloves of Pius Godwin of Lagos in the 64kg category.

Star performer of the night Olaide Fijabi of Lagos punched his way to victory against Karel Ozimkowski of England in a split decision in the 69kg category, as Lagos’ Christian Abua also won his fight against Ben Falaja in another 69kg category bout.

While Shina John of Lagos defeated Ryan Pickard of Repton in the 73kg category, Umar Sadiq of Repton defeated Muri Shango of Lagos to save the visitors from a total whitewash in the 81kg category.

  • The big question

The power of sport cannot be quantified when one considers its impact on the general spectrum of any given nation. Whereas, it can be affirmed that Nigeria in times past prided herself in the prowess of her athletes in major international events and competitions, little can be said of her current status among the committee of nations when compared with the state of the country’s current performance during competitions.

It brings to mind the fact that most of our sport engines are either dilapidated or in a state of total collapse. This suggests that the vision of our sport is getting darker by the day without anything pragmatic being done towards ensuring the sincere transformation of this sector that has proven to have the capacity of generating massive employment for our youths, as well as promoting the much needed national unity and cohesion among its citizenry with a multiplier effect of international respect and honour.

We have in the recent past witnessed the deplorable state of our sport facilities across the country. But for a few state-owned facilities that are relatively managed, all others are nothing to write home about. Our schools which ought to be the basic foundation for sport development have lost their sports perspective as most schools these days don’t have sport fields, let alone sport teachers or masters to inculcate the rudiments of sports in their students.

A visit to our tertiary institutions will tell you the extent to which sport has been dealt with and this is evident in the various ways through which tertiary institution managements have managed the sporting culture of their various institutions. We now witness a scenario whereby sport facilities in tertiary institutions are either poorly managed or not available at all and this trend is such that promotes all sorts of negative behaviour among students while in school.

One is concerned about all these conditions that have over time culminated in a generic mass reduction in terms of performance among our athletes; one is troubled by the inconsistency and lack of a comprehensive strategic sport development programme that would rejuvenate the entire sector and oil the dead engines while also ensuring that Nigeria is situated in its rightful place.

At this point it is instructive that we take a look at our National Sport Policy and ask if there is a correlation between the implementation of the policy and the set objective of the policy as it relates to the current state of sports in Nigeria. To what extent is the sport development agenda or reformation designed to integrate muti-collaborative approach towards its actualisation?

Are we as a nation truly ready to reform our sport sector? What is the position and contribution, if any, of sport professionals on the current trend recorded in our sports? Are we satisfied as a nation or is there something that we are missing? When and how can we rejuvenate our sport? Are the administrators the problem of the dwindling fortunes of Nigeria Sport? Or is it the lack of patriotism among athletes that is the problem?

These are questions that we will attempt to answer in subsequent editions. Meanwhile, this writer is of the firm belief that sport, when properly harnessed, has got the potential to transform both the image and economy of any nation and Nigeria will definitely not be an exception.

  • We want to win this championship

We want to win this championship

Flamingoes skipper Victoria Aidelomon has shared her thoughts to the media in Azerbaijan on Nigeria’s opening FIFA Under 17 World Cup game against Canada today.

Speaking ahead of the match billed to kick-off 1.00pm Nigerian time, she said: ”We want to win this championship. With God’s help, we can achieve a good result. But I note that all 16 teams are very good.”

Head Coach of the U-17 Women National Team, Peter Dedevbo also spoke to journalists on today’s encounter in Baku.

”Breakdown of the World Cup teams are all good. We want to win every match, starting tomorrow (today), against Canada. ‘We respect all the teams, but we want to be respected as well,” Dedevbo added.

The Flamingoes’ opponents in Group A are Azerbaijan, Canada and Colombia.

  • Victor Moses tipped to take pressure off Torres

Trevor Sinclair says Nigeria’s Victor Moses can help take pressure off fellow Chelsea striker Fernando Torres.

The former Chelsea star made this statement while backing the Spaniard following his muted showing in last weekend’s barren draw against Queen Park Rangers.

“He’s started his season well,” Sinclair told Talk Sport. He had an off game Saturday but it was a tough game there was not a lot of space.

“He didn’t get a lot of balls into him where he could have created something; it was a pretty difficult game for him.”

Sinclair was impressed by Daniel Sturridge and new singing Victor Moses’ performances from the bench and believes they can ease the scoring burden on Torres.

“Sturridge came on and impressed me, Moses came on and he looks a dangerous player as well.

“We’ve got to utilise the squad this season. All the pressure won’t be on Torres’ shoulders to score the goals.”

Torres came under fire after Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with their west London rivals on Saturday but Sinclair believes the criticism is unfair.

Victor Moses joined the Blues from Wigan over the summer for nine million pounds and made his debut against QPR on Saturday. The Nigeria international had put up some head-turning displays in an opening day’s tie against Chelsea before crossing over.

  • Four-star Chidera eyes more goals

He has already scored four goals in two matches for the Golden Eaglets but Chidera Ezeh has confidentially enthused that he would get among the goals if fielded against Junior Menas of Niger on Saturday.

Chidera, one of the graduates from the national Under-15 team, has responded with aplomb with a rich vein of form. He cracked home the team’s first ever hat-trick when he came in as second half substitute in a recent international friendly against Junior Wasps of Rwanda and increased his tally to four with a beautiful solitary strike in the 4-1 win over Niger penultimate Saturday.

Yet the lad has set fresh target, saying he relishes the opportunity of playing for Nigeria at this level.

“I think all goals I have scored are important but I’ll pick the goal I scored against Niger in Niamey as the best yet because it was in a competitive match,” said the Senior Secondary School 2 student. “I’ve been lucky to be here and I want to make good use of every opportunity given to me.”

Asked if he has premonition that he was going to score against Niamey after coming on as a second half substitute for two-goal hero, Ibrahim Alhassan.

“The credit must always go to the coaches who thought I could do something by bringing me on to play against Niger,” Chidera as he loves to be called, said with child-like innocence. “I love scoring goals and I don’t usually go into a match thinking of whether I would score or not.

“I always pray to be at the right position at the right time and I hope I would be given the same opportunity on Saturday,” he said asking Nigerians to pray for the team’s success.

“Our team is very good and we can be better,” he said matter-of-factly. “We want Nigerians to keep faith with us and we won’t disappoint them. We would approach the game against Niger on Saturday with all seriousness and I would be glad if given the chance to play.”

  • CBN vows to support Super Eagles

CBN vows to support Super Eagles

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said on Thursday in Abuja that it would give the Super Eagles the necessary support to become world-beater.

Ugochukwu Okoroafor, the Director, Corporate Communications Department of the bank, gave the assurance, while announcing the bank’s contribution to sports development in the country at the secretariat of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

He said the drop in the performance of the Super Eagles called for concern and as such, should not be left to sports people alone to handle.

“Just as they say politics is too serious to be left for politicians alone, so is sports too serious to be left to sports people alone. Everybody should get involved and that is why we are here.

“In soccer, we used to be number four in the world and for us not to be even fourth in Africa means we have to find out what the structural challenges are.

“We are no longer a strong force in athletics and can’t compare with Jamaica and you know Jamaica can’t match Nigeria in terms of size and population.

“Most of the people running for Jamaica came from Nigeria. So, we have it and we used it in the days of Chidi Imo, Falilat Ogunkoya and others,” Okoroafor said.

He said the support to the Eagles and football in general was a replica of what the CBN had done to golf and tennis that have produced talents for the country.

The banker further said that the CBN had plans to also support the Beach Soccer Competition scheduled to take place at Jabi, Abuja, in November.

“We have our core mandate and what we do is in the context of corporate social responsibility.

“What we are doing is to help develop the society, so that we can have a stable economy, bearing in mind that we have our core mandate which is printing of currency.’

  • Diarra worry for Jol

    Diarra worry for Jol

Fulham fear Mahamadou Diarra could be ruled out for the majority of the season, manager Martin Jol has admitted.

Jol revealed the potential extent of the injury Diarra suffered making his return from international exile with Mali this month. The 31-year-old, who had not played for his country for more than a year, damaged his left knee and was forced to miss Fulham’s 2-0 Barclays Premier League win over West Brom last weekend.

Jol confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Diarra required some form of surgery and would miss at least another three weeks. But if it transpires he has damaged his cruciate ligament, he could be out for up to five months.

Jol, who was expecting to learn the true extent of the damage next week, said: “There’s a little piece of cartilage floating in his knee, so we have to operate that in any case, and that can be three or four weeks.

“But if there is damage to his cruciate ligament, for example, it will take a lot longer. It will take him three, four, five months at least.”

Globacom rallies support for Flying Eagles, Eaglets

Nigeria’s national telecoms operator and official sponsor of Nigerian national teams, Globacom has called on the Flying Eagles and National Under-17 team – ‘The Golden Eaglets’ to approach their respective football engagements this weekend with a focus on total victory.

Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets will this weekend mount a double assault for African Youth Championship and 2013 African U-17 qualifier tickets in Johannesburg and Calabar respectively.

Globacom in a press statement called on both teams to make Nigeria proud by winning their matches to pave way for early qualification for both competitions.

While the U-20 team takes on Amajita of South Africa on Saturday, the Golden Eaglets will on Sunday file out against Junior Menas of Niger in an all-important African Qualifier.

Total victory, according to Globacom, is required as the battle for qualification gathers momentum.

Globacom called on the two teams to make it a memorable weekend for soccer-loving Nigerians by defeating their opponents and advancing towards the next stage.

Acknowledging that there are no more minnows in African football, Globacom noted that beating South Africa and Niger convincingly, should not be a very tough task for Nigeria given the fine collection of tested players the U-20 and the U-17 teams will be parading.

As the foremost corporate supporter of football in Nigeria, Globacom said it is fully behind the National Teams in their quest to land the two qualification tickets.

Glo is the major sponsor of the national teams.
