    • Oparanozie, Ordega join  camp

Super Falcons’ coach, Kadiri Ikhana said he needs unwavering commitment from his wards as they head into the final camping for the 2012 AWC in Equatorial Guinea next month.

The team resumed camp officially on Sunday with 23 out of the 27 invited players.

Ikhana said it is straight to business so as to cover enough ground before the competition starts.

“We didn’t get enough time as we would have loved to, so our programmes start immediately.

“The tournament is just five weeks away so we have a short time to train and choose the best players to represent the country in Equatorial Guinea,” he said.

Ikhana invited nine players, who featured for the Falconets at the just-concluded FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Japan.

The Falcons’ gaffer congratulated the side for their performance at the tournament which saw them finish fourth behind winners, USA, Germany, and hosts Japan.

“The Falconets did the country proud at the Under 20 World Cup and I would like to congratulate them. I watched the team and I was impressed by the players I saw, which is why I have invited nine of them to join us.

“Those players have already proved themselves at the Under 20 level and I hope they would measure up to the standards we require at the level of Super Falcons,” he said.

Ikhana insisted on total commitment from his wards.

“We want to retain the AWC title so nothing short of 100% commitment is needed. I hope you will make it difficult for me to choose my final team for the tournament,” he said.

The AWC will take place in Equatorial Guinea from October 28 to November 11.

    List of players in camp:

Josephine Chukwunonye, Ngozi Okobi, Cecilia Nku, Ugo Njoku, Asisat Oshoala, Esther Sunday, Gloria Ofoegbu, Eberechi Maraihe, Gladys Akpa, Evelyn Nwabuoku, Ngozi Ebere, Ulumma Jerome, Joy Jegede, Chiudo Ehiudo, Stella Mbachu, Onyinyechi Ohadugha, Glory Iroka, Shola Oyewusi, Tshola Tawa, Tochukwu Oluehi, Ifeoma Emenike, Sharifat Saheed and Precious Dede.

Sports Festival: Aregbesola rewards Osun athletes

There is always a reward for good work and sterling performance, and that was what was demonstrated by the State Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, when he approved cash rewards for Team Osun athletes that clinched Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at last years’ National Sports Festival held in Port Harcourt tagged Rivers 2011.

Acting General Manager of the State of Osun Sports Council, Akin Adio, while briefing journalists at his office of the preparation of Team Osun athletes ahead of today’s elimination qualifiers that will kick off in Ado Ekiti, he noted that: “We have prepared very well unlike before, the athletes were in camp for two weeks before now, and I can assure sports-loving Osun indigenes that we have prepared adequately and I know that by the special grace of God we are going to smile home.”

“I want to use this medium to thank the State of Osun Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who has always been our pillar, who has always been assisting us, for the first time he released a substantial amount of money for us to prepare our athletes to ensure that we qualify for all ball games. He has been a lover of sports and recently he approved money for those that did us proud at Port Harcourt, Gold medal N300, 000, Silver medal N200, 000 and Bronze medal N100, 000 not only that those who won medals at the South West Special Sports were also rewarded by his Excellency.”

No fewer than 123 Osun athletes arrived in Ado-Ekiti yesterday for the qualifiers of all ball games of the upcoming National Sports Festival.

However, Aregbesola last week inaugurated an ad-hoc Sports Development Committee headed by FIFA and CAF instructor Festus Adegboyega Onigbinde and the committee is expected to submit their recommendations in three months and Adio, who is the committee scribe, believes that by the time the committee submits its report, the State of Osun will be a Mecca of sports.

Adio, a former Osun Football Association secretary and the longest serving state association scribe, is optimistic that with the support given to sports by Aregbesola in the State of Osun, the state will rank among the best ten states in the federation at Eko 2012.

  • Gervinho’s performance shows the “false nine” is in vogue

Gervinho’s performance shows the “false nine” is in vogue

Arsenal’s performance in dismantling Southampton 6-1 on Saturday was a delight for almost all watching, bar Southampton supporters of course. The way the Gunners played was exhibition stuff at times. Amongst an array of star Gunners performers it was Gervinho who most caught the eye. Aside from his two goals, the first a fine drilled finish the second a tap in, it was the Ivorian’s role in the side that was most intriguing.

Gervinho lined up as Arsenal’s central attacking spearhead, flanked by Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. However, in reality, Gervinho was anything but central and essentially performed as a “false nine” with the freedom to play and run wherever and whenever he felt the need to. The redeployment of Gervinho, who is most nominally known as a wide player paid immediate dividends as the Southampton defenders simply did not know where or when to track the Ivorian in what was easily the most convincing performance of his Arsenal career to date.

Southampton, however, are bottom of the table of the reason and it will be interesting to see how Gervinho does in the role against better defenders. The Southampton backline were too easily drawn out of their defensive positions to follow their opponent, not only a risky strategy due to the Ivorian’s pace and ability to spin in behind them, but also leaving space that the likes of Santi Cazorla and Podolski gleefully exploited.

What Gervinho’s new position confirms, however, is that false nines are well and truly in vogue. This very modern trend in football arguably began with Roma’s team under Luciano Spalletti, where Francesco Totti was deployed as the central striker but constantly dropped deep to orchestrate play as a classic “false nine”. Manchester United’s league and Champions League winning team in 2008 also contained the likes of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, both not natural strikers, as attacking spearheads. However, these were very much examples against the norm.

Since Lionel Messi’s remarkably successful switch from the right to becoming Barcelona’s central striker, the interest in the “false nine” has exploded. The sheer amount of goals Messi scores perhaps masks the fact that he rarely parks himself by the penalty box in the mould of a true striker. Rather, many of Messi’s goals are him coming onto the ball from a deeper position in a classic “false nine” role. Barcelona’s success has led to Spain operating a similar formation, with Cesc Fabregas performing the role in Euro 2012 due to the poor form of Fernando Torres and injury to David Villa.

So what does the “false nine” actually offer? Teams may not be lucky enough to call upon the likes of Messi or Fabregas to take up the position but Gervinho’s performance yesterday is a classic example of it’s benefits. Defenders, who are often used to simplicity in the form of a marking a (usually) static forward, suddenly do not have a direct opponent to mark and are faced with the decision of either leaving the forward to their own devices and possibly suffering the consequences, or choosing to follow the striker, thus potentially causing the problems that Southampton experienced at the Emirates yesterday. Fundamentally, it’s the unexpected nature of the “false nine” role that makes it a success

That is not to say the formation does not carry it’s faults. Gervinho may have impressed yesterday but there remained occasions where the Gunners literally had no presence up front to speak of. A few occasions saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain head to the byline and pull it back into a penalty area empty of Arsenal attackers. The number nine may be “false” but he should not forget that the onus remains on him to score the goals. Even at Barcelona, there have been occasions when Lionel Messi has been stifled by the opposition, who aware of his want to drop deep, flood the midfield with defence-minded players prepared to sit in the pockets of space that “false nines” such as Messi want to take up. Additionally, when the “false nine” lacks pace as Totti did for Roma, he becomes easier for the defenders to pick up. Thus for the system to find success, the pace of the likes of Gervinho and Messi is key.

  • Chelsea,QPR hit by injury problems

    Chelsea,QPR hit by injury problems

Chelsea and QPR moved from counting handshakes to counting the cost of a predictably fiery west London derby.

Anton Ferdinand’s pre-match snub of John Terry and Ashley Cole set the tone for Saturday’s goalless Barclays Premier League draw at Loftus Road, which saw rival players snap into each other from the first whistle.

Ironically, Terry and Ferdinand were among the walking wounded at the final whistle, with both having required treatment in the closing stages.

Chelsea captain Terry typically elected to play on after pulling up with a knee injury, something manager Roberto Di Matteo was keen to play down ahead of his side’s Champions League opener against Juventus on Wednesday.

‘It doesn’t look like we have any major problems,’ Di Matteo said.

‘It was a tough battle for everybody, there were plenty of knocks.

‘We’ll assess it tomorrow morning and then shift our attention to Wednesday.’

Ferdinand hobbled off in the dying seconds with what looked like a hamstring injury but QPR boss Mark Hughes was more concerned about problems picked up by Andrew Johnson and Fabio.

Both had to be substituted in the first half with respective knee and hamstring complaints and face scans to determine the extent of the damage.

Terry – who shook off an ankle problem to start on Saturday – was not Chelsea’s only injury concern, with John Obi Mikel having also taken a knock in the back.

The Blues can ill-afford either to be missing as they open the defence of their European crown this week.

  • Man United unlikely to be charged

Man United unlikely to be charged

The Premier League are unlikely to take action following brief anti-Liverpool chanting during Manchester United’s Barclays Premier League win over Wigan.

United’s biggest win of the season was marred by a short burst of anti-Liverpool chanting from a small minority of home fans following this week’s damning report on the handling of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, in which 96 people died.

The report laid bare a shocking cover-up which attempted to shift the blame for the tragedy on to its victims, revealing that South Yorkshire Police had instructed officers to change or amend their statements relating to the tragic events.

One clearly audible chant at yesterday’s game at Old Trafford was “Always the victims, never your fault”, believed to be in reference to the report findings.

However, the song has been sung since Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra last season, which saw the Uruguay international given an eight-game ban and a £40,000 fine.

It is understood the Premier League deem the chants to be unacceptable but believe it is a matter for the clubs themselves to deal with.

There is a history of sour relations between the two sides. A minority of United fans have directed chants to Liverpool fans regarding Hillsborough and a Liverpool minority have chanted in reference to the Munich air disaster of 1958 in which 23 people died.

A United spokesperson said the club “deplore” such songs and, in a statement, the club said: “The manager has made the club’s position very clear on this matter. It is now up to the fans to respect that.”

The Football Association declined to comment on the matter on Sunday.

The tension between the two rival clubs is sure to be heightened when United travel to Anfield next Sunday.

Manchester United’s Supporters’ Trust echoed Ferguson’s statements.

MUST chief executive Duncan Drasdo said: “We enjoy a fierce rivalry but these issues transcend that rivalry.

“We agree 100% with the statement made by Sir Alex Ferguson – this is the time for supporters of these two great clubs to represent their clubs with the integrity and honour that our glorious history demands

“Following this week’s developments and release of revelatory information on the Hillsborough tragedy, MUST wishes to make it absolutely clear that just as we condemn chants mocking the Munich air disaster we also condemn any chants relating to Hillsborough or indeed any other human tragedy.

“We did hear the usual anti-Liverpool chants at the match today but we’re pleased to say, despite some reports to the contrary, there was nothing that was specifically referencing Hillsborough.”

  • Tate: We’ll bounce back

    Tate: We’ll bounce back

Alan Tate insists the Swans’ unique character will ensure they will be raring to go when Everton visit the Liberty next week.

Michael Laudrup tasted defeat for the first time since taking over at the Liberty as the Swans went down 2-0 at Aston Villa.

Goals in each half were enough to earn Villa their first league win under new boss Paul Lambert, with David Moyes’s Everton up next for the Swans.

Matthew Lowton volleyed home after 16 minutes before debutant Christian Benteke took advantage of Ashley Williams’ mistake to slot home late on.

But Tate feels the Swans’ spirit will help them come through their first setback of the season in readiness for the home clash with the Toffees.

“There’ll always be ups and downs in this league,” he said. “We have got to bounce back now against a very good Everton team.

“To be fair, we have a good attitude and character within this squad, and we don’t go over the top when we win and we don’t hit rock bottom when we lose.

“We’ll just get back to training now and make sure we are fully prepared for a tough game with a very good Everton side.”

Tate made his first league start since he led the team out for the club’s first Premier League match last season at Manchester City.

With Chico Flores suspended and injuries ruling out Kyle Bartley and Garry Monk, Tate partnered Williams in the heart of defence.

Tate added: “I was pleased with my performance. It was a normal performance from me – pretty solid and nothing fancy. That’s what I’ve been like for the last few years, so I was happy with how I went.

“Ash was solid too, but he was unlucky with the mistake. He tried to keep us in possession by heading it back to Michel instead of nodding it back where they could win it.

“He didn’t get on it and the lad has gone on and got his goal. It’s unfortunate, and it’s happened to Ash in the last two games, but no-one is pointing any blame – that’s now the way this squad operates.

“Ash has been a rock for us since the first day he came in, and he’s been one of our most consistent performers.

“It won’t affect him because he knows his quality and he’ll be fine for the next game against Everton.”

  • Lambert backing Benteke for ‘big, big career’

Lambert backing Benteke for ‘big, big career’

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is backing his £7million summer signing, striker Christian Benteke, to have a “big, big career” after his goal-scoring debut in the 2-0 home win over Swansea.

Belgium international Benteke, who joined Villa from Genk on transfer deadline day, was introduced as a late substitute and quickly made his presence felt.

He unsettled the Swansea defence before pouncing on a mistake by Ashley Williams to add the second goal after the stunning opener from another newcomer in right-back Matthew Lowton.

It ensured a first Barclays Premier League win for Lambert since replacing Alex McLeish as Villa continued on from the promising performance in the 1-1 draw at Newcastle.

Lambert said: “What people have to remember is that Benteke is in a very good national side, with a lot of talented players, and he is holding his own in that team.

“He is only 21 and, if he keeps progressing, he will have a big, big career, that’s for sure.

“I thought he was unplayable, that last 20 minutes or so he came on, he deserved his goal, and could have had another one.”

Of equal satisfaction to Lambert, was the performance of Lowton who was plucked from League One.

Lambert said: “You’ve got to give the lad a lot of credit because he’s just come from Sheffield United.

“But since he’s been here, he hasn’t looked out of place one little bit.

“For someone who came from League One, he is doing not too bad!

“His goal was brilliant, a terrific strike, but I thought his general game against Swansea was brilliant.”

What is beyond dispute is the complete change in atmosphere inside Villa Park compared to the negative vibes surrounding the McLeish era.

Lambert was an animated touch-line figure, reminiscent of the person he still calls “gaffer” in his former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill.

But he insists any frustration was not directed at his team’s performance but at some of the harsh yellow cards branded by referee Lee Mason.

Lambert said: “When the crowd see a performance like that and people running around and putting a shift in, then it will lift them.

“The fans were great. They’ve had a lot of hurt. But, when you get this place going, it is a brilliant place.

“There is a long way to go. It will take time to get where we want but it’s a start.

“The young and experienced lads have been brilliant and, against a really good Swansea side, we were worthy of the win.

“My only frustration was with some of the yellow cards because I didn’t think some of them were justified.”

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup was not too downcast about his side’s first defeat of the season.

He said: “At this level, small details tip the balance between positive and negative.

“Their keeper (Brad Guzan) makes a great early save to deny a great strike from Nathan Dyer outside the box and five minutes later they score one of the goals of the day (from Lowton).

“Maybe in the first half we gave the ball away a little too easy but, when we played fast, we created some chances.

“We had three or four chances and then in the last 20 minutes we had to risk a little more, had to play with four or five very offensive players, and that gave them some space behind us.

“I always want to win, I hate to lose, but we know we will lose.

“It is important even in the games we are losing, that we will always be in the games and don’t give them away, that we are always competitive and that was the case at Villa.”

  • Torres: I can replace Drogba well

Torres: I can replace Drogba well

Fernando Torres has insisted that he is the man to replace the departed Didier Drogba as Chelsea’s senior forward.

is one of the best strikers

The Spaniard is the only established striker in Roberto Di Matteo’s squad following Drogba’s exit to Shanghai Shenhua after securing Champions League victory in his final game for the Blues.

Despite suffering a sluggish start to his career at Stamford Bridge, the former Liverpool man has enjoyed a revival of sorts with three goals to his name already this season.

“Didier is not here anymore, so there is more responsibility for me and I’m ready for the challenge,” the 28-year-old told the Daily Star Sunday.

“Now, I am looking for new personal targets, like getting as many goals as possible – hopefully more than in my best season at Liverpool.”

Several new players were brought in by Di Matteo during a busy summer in the transfer window following the club’s European triumph over Bayern Munich.

But Torres believes it is now time for the London-based club to focus on domestic matters once more.

“I think all the fans are excited about the Premier League again, after a couple of years of not winning the trophy,” he added.

“So the Premier League is a big target and maybe we can become the first team to win two Champions Leagues in a row.

“I think it’s a good time – especially for me – to give something back to the fans.”

  • Kompany unconcerned by CL challenge

    Kompany unconcerned by CL challenge

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany insists he is unconcerned by his side’s difficult Champions League group, in which they will face the champions of Germany, Spain and Holland.

Roberto Mancini’s side face a tough task of escaping Group D to lift their maiden European Cup, having been drawn against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund & Ajax.

But, whilst the Belgian admits the group is harder than last year’s draw – in which City failed to progress ahead of Bayern Munich, Villarreal & Napoli – he claims he is relishing the upcoming ties.

“Games like this are why you are in the Champions League. I thought it couldn’t get more difficult than last year but there you go,” he told reporters.

“It’s a great challenge. I think we are the sort of team which gets better as the challenges get even greater.

“It’s perfect for us. There won’t be any moments where we will be surprised. The motivation will be sky-high, the atmosphere great. I couldn’t think of a better way to play the Champions League.

“It’s all about how far you can get but it’s even nicer when you play against the best teams.”

The Belgium international also declared himself satisfied with City’s start to the season, dismissing criticism of his side’s performances.

“I’m happy with things so far. We won the Community Shield and have made a good start, with seven points out of nine,” he added.

“If I had one message for the team, it would be ‘Well done guys’. We’ve always battled hard and shown how strong we are as a team. We’ve proved we have plenty of character.

“If we can win games when supposedly not at our best, what will happen if we do hit top form?”

After seeing City win the Premier League with the final kick of the season last time round, the centre-back does not believe things will be any easier this time around.

  • Galatasaray boss Terim eyes upset against Manchester United

Galatasaray boss Terim eyes upset against Manchester United

The Turkish side knocked the Red Devils out of the Champions League 19 years ago, and their boss is hoping for similar success when the two sides meet on Wednesday.

The Turkish side, matched up against United, Braga and Cluj in Group H, will look to replicate the away-goals win they had over Sir Alex Ferguson’s side during the 1993-94 season.

The Red Devils surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 at Old Trafford in the second round first leg, before being held to a 0-0 draw in Turkey to see them drop out of the competition in November – and Terim is eyeing similar success 19 years later.

“I don’t need to tell you how Manchester United are a big club. We respect to them but we don’t fear them. We are going to England for take a good result,” he told the club’s official website.

“Years ago we made history against them. I believe that Galatasaray can repeat that success.”

Terim also told the press that former Bolton striker Johan Elmander, who picked a knock up during the game against Antalyaspor, would able to play against Manchester United.

Both sides warmed up to Wednesday’s game with 4-0 victories in the league; Galatasary thumped Antalyaspor comprehensively, with United achieving the same scoreline at home to Wigan.
