Ndubuoke: How MKO Abiola  brought  sanity  into SWAN

Former President of the Sportswriters Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Fan Ndubuoke, has recounted the turbulent period that preceded his administration and the decisive steps taken to rescue the association from near collapse.

He described his 1992–1996 tenure as a deliberate mission to restore integrity, professionalism and credibility.

Presenting a paper titled “Restoring the Integrity of SWAN” at the Diamond/60th  Anniversary celebration of the association, Ndubuoke recalled that when the executive he served under assumed office in February 1992, SWAN was engulfed in crisis, internal suspicion and loss of confidence.

According to him, genuine sports journalists and editors had distanced themselves from the association, which had been infiltrated by non-professionals, eroding its sanctity.

He explained that mutual accusations between the national leadership led by Prince Lat Ogumade and sports editors worsened the situation, giving rise to splinter groups and damaging allegations of extortion. The crisis eventually resulted in the removal of the leadership and the installation of a caretaker committee by Chris Ogwu, with Ndubuoke serving as a member alongside other respected headed journalists.

Ndubuoke traced his emergence as SWAN President to the transparent electoral process conducted after the 1991 Ibadan Convention, where four contestants from the Lagos chapter served for the presidency. He was elected alongside Mallam Sani Zaria as Deputy President, inheriting what he described as a “battered and crisis-ridden association.”

Rather than rushing into office, the new leadership embarked on wide consultations and reconciliation, beginning with sports editors, media executives and foreign stakeholders.

A major turning point was the historic visit to the late MKO Abiola, SWAN’s Grand Patron, whose confidence in the association was restored following the engagement. Abiola’s donation of ₦100,000 and a brand-new official vehicle, Ndubuoke noted, symbolized renewed trust in SWAN’s leadership.

Central to the reforms was the sanitization of SWAN’s membership. The administration made possession of a Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) card compulsory, restricted full membership to practicing sports journalists, and reclassified non-core practitioners as associate members. These measures, replicated across state chapters, were aimed at restoring professionalism.

Ndubuoke highlighted additional milestones, including the introduction of the SWAN National Identity Card, restoration of affiliations with continental and global bodies, and the repositioning of SWAN as a credible partner in sports development. He lamented what he described as a renewed infiltration of the association in recent years and urged a return to SWAN’s founding ideals to preserve its legacy.

AFCON 2025: Ogunjimi leads ANFASSC to Morocco for Super Eagles

The Authentic Nigeria Football & Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC) has arrived in Morocco, led by its National President, Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi, in order to rally support for Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

The delegation includes passionate supporters, coordinators, organisers and the ANFASSC driver of vibes, the instrumentalists, prepared to deliver the traditional Nigerian fan energy that has been integral to the Super Eagles’ campaigns for decades.

The arrival in Morocco follows ANFASSC’s earlier reaffirmation of unwavering support for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2025. Despite institutional challenges reported in the lead-up to the tournament, the club’s commitment remains firm and driven by patriotism, unity, and authentic Nigerian support for the national team.

Addressing members upon arrival, Ogunjimi stated that ANFASSC’s mission in Morocco is not just to watch the Super Eagles play, but to feel every moment with them, bringing the rhythm, energy, and soul that Nigeria is known for: from the heartfelt chants to the beating drums, brass instruments, and spirited songs. These musical elements, often referred to by supporters as the “driver of vibes”, are central to the Nigerian fan experience and help lift the team’s spirit inside and outside the stadium.

“In times of pressure,”  Ogunjimi said, “Nigeria’s supporters have always turned up for our team with heart, unity, and pride. That tradition travels with us to Morocco; every chant, every beat, every flag, and every voice is here to carry the Super Eagles forward.”

ANFASSC’s presence comes at a strategic moment, as the Super Eagles prepare to face tough group matches and pursue continental glory. The club reiterates that its role is critical in providing positive psychological support for the team, reinforcing the belief that no matter where the game is played, Nigerian hearts beat with the Super Eagles.

The supporters club also takes this moment to thank Nigerians at home and abroad for their messages of encouragement, collective prayers, and steadfast belief in the team’s potential. ANFASSC remains dedicated to peaceful, passionate, and organised support, and to projecting the best of Nigerian fan culture throughout AFCON 2025.

As the tournament continues, ANFASSC urges all Nigerians to stay united, to support the Super Eagles through every challenge, and to celebrate Nigeria’s rich football legacy with pride and dignity.

Mahrez sends Algeria into Africa Cup of Nations last-16

Riyad Mahrez scored a first half penalty as Algeria sealed their place in the knockout rounds of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their Group E clash in Rabat on Sunday.

Algeria have six points and will win the group as they cannot be overhauled by either Burkina Faso (3 points) or Sudan (3) following the third round of fixtures in the pool due to the head-to-head rule.

The Burkinabe meet Sudan in their final clash on Wednesday, while Algeria take on bottom side Equatorial Guinea, who are eliminated.

Algeria were awarded a penalty just past the 20-minute mark when Rayan Ait Nouri was felled in the box by Ismahila Ouedraogo, and Mahrez made no mistake as he sent Herve Koffi in the Burkina Faso goal the wrong way.

Mahrez extended his record as Algeria’s all-time leading scorer at the Cup of Nations with his ninth goal and is also the leading scorer in this edition so far having netted twice in the opening 3-0 win over Sudan.

The Burkinabe came close to an equaliser just before halftime when Pierre Kabore’s close-range header came back off the post and Algeria were able to scramble the ball to safety.

Koffi was busy in the Burkina Faso goal and saved from Mohamed Amoura, before Ibrahim Maza forced another good stop and then scuffed a shot wide of the target.

Luca Zidane, son of France great Zinedine, showed good reactions to keep out a Lassina Traore header late on as Burkina Faso came close to an equaliser.

  • Hakimi returns for  Morocco’s final group game

Hakimi returns for  Morocco’s final group game

African player of the year Achraf Hakimi will make his first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations when hosts Morocco play Zambia today, coach Walid Regragui confirmed.

“What he has done to come back is extraordinary. What I can say is that Achraf will play tomorrow,” Regragui  in Rabat, on the eve of Morocco’s last group game.

“Whether he starts or not it will be his first match at the AFCON.

“What we want – because we want to go as far as possible – is that Achraf progresses with the team and that we can keep him for the whole competition.”

Hakimi has not played since suffering an ankle injury in action for Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of November and was an unused substitute in Morocco’s first two matches at the Cup of Nations.

Without him, Morocco beat Comoros 2-0 in the tournament’s opening game before being held to a 1-1 draw by Mali on Friday.

They sit top of Group A with four points from two outings and a win against Zambia will allow them to advance to the last 16 in first place in their section. A draw will also guarantee their spot in the knockout phase.

“I think people don’t realise what Achraf brings to our team,” Regragui added. “We have played two games without our best player, our leader and captain, but we have not hidden. Other players have stood in for him.

“But would we be a different team with Achraf? Of course. He is the best player in Africa, one of the best in the world.”

Hakimi admitted his frustration at not having taken part in either of the first two matches and said he was disappointed that Moroccan supporters had jeered the hosts during the draw against Mali.

“We know it is not easy sometimes, that they want us to win and finish games by half-time, but we have to respect our opponents too,” said the defender who helped PSG win the Champions League last season.

“It is not normal for them to boo us. We want to have the supporters behind us.

“I experienced that at Paris Saint-Germain when we were not winning in the Champions League, we were losing games, people said we were not a great team and didn’t have a great coach, but we went on to be champions of Europe.

“If the fans are behind us we can be champions of Africa together.”

Meanwhile Hakimi added he was delighted to see his friend and former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe, now with Real Madrid, in the crowd at the match against Mali.

“It is really nice to see my friend here in my country. He really likes Morocco and comes here whenever he can with his family. He loves the food here!”

  • Mozambique end 39-year wait for first AFCON victory

Mozambique end 39-year wait for first AFCON victory

Mozambique ended a 39-year wait for a first Africa Cup of Nations victory by defeating Gabon 3-2 in a Group F thriller in Agadir on Sunday.

The Mambas began the match having drawn four and lost 12 since making the first of six appearances at the tournament in 1986.

Goals from Faisal Bangal, Geny Catamo and Diogo Calila won a seesaw struggle for the Mozambicans, who led 2-1 at half-time in the Moroccan coastal city.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Moussounda netted for Gabon, who twice halved two-goal deficits before suffering a second straight loss after falling to Cameroon.

Mozambique – 24 places below Gabon in the world rankings – were more adventurous and deservedly took the lead on 37 minutes through Bangal, a striker with an Italian fourth division club.

Bangal rose unchallenged from a corner and his header bounced off the ground into the left corner of the net with Mbaba helpless.

Mozambique increased their lead just five minutes later after Bruno Ecuele Manga pulled the shirt of Elias ‘Domingues’ Pelembe in a clash of the rival captains.

Catamo calmly placed the penalty into the left corner as Mbaba dived in the opposite direction.

The Mambas almost scored again soon after with Witiness ‘Witi’ Quembo bending a shot from outside the box that struck the woodwork.

Gabon pulled one goal back five minutes into first-half added time through their best known footballer, 36-year-old Marseille striker Aubameyang.

The 2015 African player of the year was perfectly positioned to tap the ball into the net after Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan Siluane failed to grasp a Didier Ndong shot.

Portugal-based right-back Calila scored the third Mozambique goal on 52 minutes, venturing forward to nod a Witi cross paste Mbaba.

Aubameyang had a scoring chance soon after, but headed wide from point-blank range in a let-off for the Mozambicans.

Domingues, a 42-year-old and second oldest footballer to play at an AFCON, was substituted midway through the second half by a more defensive midfielder, Manuel Kambala.

Siluane saved superbly from Aubameyang and Ndong, but a subsequent corner led to a goalmouth melee that ended with Moussounda slamming the ball into the net on 76 minutes to set up a tense finish.

CAVB confirms DR Congo as hosts for 2026 Men’s African Volleyball Championship

A historic agreement was signed yesterday, at the headquarters of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) in Rabat, Morocco confirming the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as host of the Men’s African Volleyball Championship scheduled for September 2026.

The formal accord commits both the continental body and the Congolese authorities to delivering one of Africa’s flagship sporting events.

Beyond its ceremonial value, the championship carries major sporting significance, as it will serve as a qualifying tournament for both the 2027 FIVB World Championship and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, raising the stakes for participating nations across the continent.

The signing ceremony was presided over by CAVB President, Mrs. Bouchra Hajij, alongside the President of the Congo Volleyball Federation (FEVOCO), Christian Matata. Several African volleyball leaders were in attendance, including federation presidents from Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Morocco, underscoring the continental importance of the occasion.

Speaking after the signing, Matata highlighted the strong institutional and political backing behind the bid, revealing that the initiative was driven by the highest levels of government in the DRC.

He recalled the successful hosting of the Francophone Games two years ago, which helped the country develop modern sports infrastructure and inspired a policy shift toward hosting major competitions rather than merely participating abroad.

Matata further stressed that the directive to host the championship came directly from the President of the Republic through the Minister of Sports, noting that the 2026 tournament represents a major opportunity for the DRC, given its role as a qualifier for both the World Championship and the Olympic Games.

In her remarks, Mrs. Hajij explained that the choice of the DRC was based on the country’s growing volleyball profile, strong governmental commitment and the promise of passionate fan support.

She emphasized that the agreement reflects CAVB’s broader vision of strengthening cooperation among African nations, promoting good governance and elevating continental competitions to meet international standards while fostering the sustainable development of volleyball across Africa.

AFCON 2025: Arabinrin Aderonke praises Super Eagles after victory over Tunisia

Former sports editor and administrator, Arabinrin Aderonke, has lauded the Super Eagles of Nigeria following their impressive victory over Tunisia, a result that secured Nigeria’s place in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Reacting to the hard-fought encounter, Aderonke commended the team’s resilience, discipline, and attacking approach against a strong Tunisian side buoyed by confidence from their opening-match victory.

“I would like to extend my warmest felicitations to the Super Eagles for their well-deserved and courageous victory over a highly competitive Tunisian team. Qualifying with a game to spare speaks volumes about the character, strength, and ambition of this team,” she said.

Aderonke, who recently received the Role Model of the Year award from the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) in Copenhagen, Denmark, also praised the goal-scoring duo and the collective performance of the team, noting that Nigeria’s early dominance set the tone for the match and ultimately shaped the outcome.

“The goals scored by Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman must not only be attributed to individual genius, but also the strength and power of team philosophy that is founded on discipline, confidence, and team belief. Despite the fightback by Tunisia, the Super Eagles were mature and focused enough to see out the game,” said Arabinrin Aderonke.

She also pointed out the importance of getting six points from the two matches, saying it was ‘a very strong statement of intent’ by Nigeria at the championship.

“To have qualified for the Round of 16 with six points after two group games is a strength for Nigeria. It is a clear indication of the fact that Super Eagles are not just participants, but are serious title contenders,” said the female soccer fan.

The Super Eagles are currently top of Group C and, if they remain at the summit, they might be poised to face the runner-up of Group D, which includes West African arch-rivals Senegal, Benin, Congo, and Botswana.

Arabinrin Aderonke urged the team to stay focused as the tournament unfolds, rallying Nigerians everywhere to support the side.

“I appeal to the players and technical personnel to remain focused and leverage on this spirit. Nigerians pride themselves in you, and the country is behind the Super Eagles as they proceed on their journey to AFCON 2025,” she added.

Aderonke has been a strong advocate for gender equality, youth empowerment, and social inclusion, earning her a place among Africa’s leading voices in sports-for-development.

Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, praised the players’ patriotism, commitment, and resilience following Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on Saturday, which guaranteed the team’s progression to the knockout stage with a game to spare.
