Taifa Stars’ coach, captain reveals plans to stop  Super Eagles

Tanzania head coach, Manuel Gomandi, has revealed the approach his side will adopt to confront the quality of Nigeria’s Super Eagles when both teams lock horns in their opening group match of the Africa Cup of Nations this evening in Fez.

Addressing journalists at his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Argentine tactician admitted that facing Nigeria presents a formidable challenge, insisting that only total concentration, discipline and collective commitment will give his team a fighting chance.

“We need to be very careful and work in a perfect situation. I am confident my players will put in extra effort to contain the threat from Nigeria,” Gomandi said.

The coach acknowledged the depth of talent within the Super Eagles squad, stressing that Tanzania must raise their level beyond the ordinary to compete.

“We need to be realistic. When you look at the qualities in the Nigerian team, you have to give more than 100 percent to try to neutralize them,” he added.

While expressing respect for their opponents, Gomandi maintained that Tanzania will not completely abandon their own style of play, noting that tactical discipline and error-free execution will be crucial.

“Our mentality is to try to play and attack as well. But we must be tactically disciplined and avoid mistakes, because the quality in the Nigerian team can punish you if you give them any opportunity,” he concluded.

Speaking in the same vein, Captain Mbwana Samatta said the Taifa Stars are determined to defy the odds and write a new chapter in the nation’s football history.

“Many football fans say we are in a very tough group, and that is true,” Samatta said. “But we are determined to make history and give our best in every match.”

The Le Havre striker acknowledged the difficulty of facing Africa’s elite but stressed that success on the continent requires courage and belief.

“If you want to achieve something meaningful in Africa, you must be ready to face strong teams. There are no easy matches at this level,” he noted.

Samatta also appealed to Tanzanians at home and abroad to rally behind the team, insisting that their support could make a difference on the big stage.

Midfielder Feisal Salum echoed his captain’s optimism, pointing to the confidence gained from Tanzania’s recent Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign.

The Taifa Stars reached the quarter-finals as co-hosts in August, losing to eventual champions Morocco, with Salum among the standout performers.

“Everyone is really motivated after what we did in CHAN,” Salum said. “Those games were very tough and almost like AFCON. This will be even harder, but we have built incredible belief and fighting spirit.”

Having failed to progress beyond the group stage in their last two AFCON appearances, Salum believes lessons from past tournaments and the guidance of head coach Miguel Gamondi have strengthened the squad’s resolve. “We learnt a lot, especially from Ivory Coast last time,” he explained. “We must give 100 percent in every game and play with discipline. With these lessons, there is confidence in the group that we can reach our minimum target of the round of 16.”

  • Udinese’s trainers  defend sloppy  Okoye despite costly loss to Fiorentina

Udinese’s trainers  defend sloppy  Okoye despite costly loss to Fiorentina

Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic has defended  Maduka Okoye following the Super Eagles goalkeeper’s early red card that derailed the Bianconeri in a crushing 5–1 Serie A defeat to Fiorentina, while admitting his disappointment with how the team collapsed thereafter.

Udinese started brightly and were in control until the eighth minute, when Okoye was sent off for a foul on Fiorentina forward Moise Kean after rushing out of his area to intercept a through ball. Referee Maurizio Mariani showed a straight red card without VAR intervention, leaving Udinese to battle with 10 men for virtually the entire contest.

Despite backing his goalkeeper, Runjaic felt his side still had enough to compete. “We played well in the first five minutes. You could see Fiorentina were struggling, but then we gave them a great gift with the red card,” the coach said. “Mistakes happen and we lost a player, but even with ten men you can still put in a good performance and win.”

Instead, Fiorentina capitalised ruthlessly, racing into a 3–0 half-time lead and eventually running out 5–1 winners to secure their first league victory of the season. Runjaic lamented Udinese’s poor reaction to adversity, adding: “I’m disappointed with our lack of reaction. We conceded too much and went into half-time 3–0 down against a team fighting for survival. It’s not easy to recover from that. It’s a shame for our fans.”

Following the match, Okoye took responsibility for the turning point and issued a brief apology to supporters. “I’m sorry, Bianconeri,” the Nigerian goalkeeper wrote on Snapchat, acknowledging the impact of his dismissal on the team’s collapse.

The defeat leaves Udinese 12th on the Serie A table, and they will be without the suspended Okoye when they host Lazio on December 27, a game Runjaic insists must show a response. “We’re very disappointed,” he said, “but we’ll come back stronger against Lazio.”

Rivers United  extend  NPFL  lead after drawing Katsina United

Rivers United tightened their grip at the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League after battling to a 1-1 draw against Katsina United in a delayed Matchday 18 encounter at the George Innih Stadium, Ilorin, yesterday.

Still smarting from a heavy 4-1 loss to Barau FC in Kano last Friday, the first away defeat of their campaign, the Finidi George-led side showed character to avoid consecutive losses for the first time this season and preserve their position at the top of the table.

Katsina United, who had slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Bendel Insurance in their last home game outing, started brightly as they chased a much-needed victory. Their intent was rewarded in the 23rd minute when Azeez Falolu fired the Chanji Boys into the lead.

Rivers United, however, responded with resilience and were finally rewarded in the 75th  minute through Stephen Manyo. The defender, recently back from injury, marked his return in style by scoring against his former club to restore parity.

The result keeps Rivers United top of the standings with 34 points from 18 matches, while Katsina United sit 12th  on 23 points from the same number of games.

However, the title race remains tight, with second-placed Nasarawa United on 31 points and a superior goal difference. The Solid Miners could leapfrog Rivers United if they secure victory over Barau FC in their outstanding Matchday 18 fixture today in Lafia.

Meanwhile, Rivers United will host Rangers International FC in the last game of the first stanza in Port Harcourt this weekend while Katsina United will hit Owerri as guests of Kun Khalifat FC next Monday.

Brazil and Santos forward Neymar has had a successful operation on his left knee to repair a damaged meniscus.

The 33-year-old has been carrying the injury during a difficult season for Santos, where he played a pivotal role in helping the club avoid relegation from Brazil’s top flight.

Santos said Brazil’s national team doctor performed the arthroscopic surgery, having previously operated on Neymar for a foot fracture as well as the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) he suffered in 2023.

The operation boosts Neymar’s hopes of being included in Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for the 2026 World Cup.

  • South Africa 2-1 Angola: Foster’s sweet strike fires Bafana  to historic victory

South Africa 2-1 Angola: Foster’s sweet strike fires Bafana  to historic victory

Lyle Foster scored a superb winner from outside the box as South Africa defeated Angola 2-1 in Africa Cup of Nations Group B in Marrakech on Monday, the first time they have won their opening match at the continental finals in 21 years.

South Africa also had a goal disallowed and struck the crossbar, just about deserving the nervy victory as Angola also had chances and will be disappointed not to have got something from the game.

    Sign up here.

South Africa took the lead on 21 minutes when Oswin Appollis showed neat footwork in the box to work a shooting chance and put the ball in the bottom corner, but Angola equalised before the break as Show got a touch to Fredy’s free kick to steer the ball into the net.

The winning moment came after 79 minutes when Foster was teed up 20 metres out and curled his shot into the top corner to give the bronze medallists from two years ago a positive start to their campaign.

It was a workmanlike performance from South Africa, who do not have the plethora of players in top European leagues that their tournament rivals enjoy, with Foster their only one at Premier League Burnley.

But they are a well-oiled machine under Belgian coach Hugo Broos and did enough for a victory that set them well on course for the knockout rounds, with Egypt and Zimbabwe to meet later on Monday in the same pool.

South Africa took the lead after a period of sustained possession that led to Khuliso Mudau’s cross, which was touched by both Sipho Mbule and Foster before Appollis beat two defenders and side-footed into the bottom corner of the net.

Angola equalised on 35 minutes when Fredy’s low free kick was touched into the bottom corner by Show, his second goal in his 50th  cap for his country to make it 1-1 at the break.

South Africa thought they had retaken the lead when halftime substitute Tshepang Moremi turned his defender and fired low into the bottom corner of the net, but a VAR review showed Foster was offside in the build-up.

South Africa’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi crashed the ball against the crossbar with a rasping shot from 35 yards, before Foster’s clinical strike secured all three points.

  • Bafana Bafana beat Angola 2-1 as Foster claims match-winning goal

Bafana Bafana beat Angola 2-1 as Foster claims match-winning goal

Burnley striker Lyle Foster scored in the 79th minute as South Africa edged Angola 2-1 in Marrakesh on Monday, claiming their first opening victory in an Africa Cup of Nations campaign in 21 years. Since defeating Benin in the 2004 tournament, Bafana Bafana had drawn twice and lost four times on their tournament debuts.

Monday’s Group B opener unfolded in three distinct phases. South Africa began strongly, with Oswin Appollis putting the visitors ahead in the 21st minute before a sparse crowd at the near-42,000-seat stadium. Angola regained control for the remainder of the first half, with Show levelling the score. South Africa recovered in the second half, asserting dominance before Foster struck to secure the win. Egypt, led by captain Mohamed Salah, face Zimbabwe later in Agadir.

South Africa pressed from the outset, forcing goalkeeper Hugo Marques into an early save from Fredy Ribeiro’s shot in the 15th minute. Six minutes later, Appollis capitalised on a Khuliso Mudau cross, taking possession and finishing low past the 39-year-old Marques to give Bafana Bafana the lead. Ronwen Williams kept the lead intact with a brilliant point-blank save from Gelson Dala at the half-hour mark.

Angola gradually asserted themselves, and Show equalised in the 35th minute. Siyabonga Ngezana escaped a yellow card after fouling Dala, but the free-kick that followed proved costly. Show connected with the low delivery to steer the ball into the corner. Tempers flared as the half progressed, with Sudanese referee cautioning Angola’s To Carneiro and South Africans Aubrey Modiba and Sphephelo Sithole. By halftime, French coach Patrice Beaumelle would have been the happier manager, with Angola unlucky not to lead.

South Africa thought they had regained the lead six minutes into the second half when substitute Tshepang Moremi, replacing the ineffective Mohau Nkota, slotted a low shot past Marques. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as VAR ruled Foster marginally offside — he remains the squad’s only South African player from Europe’s top five leagues.

Bafana Bafana intensified their attack, with centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi venturing forward for a long-range strike that rebounded off the crossbar. South Africa, subdued for much of the first half, became the aggressors, consistently pressing for a decisive goal.

A swift counterattack saw Moremi outpace a defender before feeding Foster, who initially fired over. Foster atoned in the 79th minute, firing from the edge of the box past Marques to put South Africa back in front. The move stemmed from an intercepted Angolan pass and two precise team passes, allowing Foster to notch his fourth goal in six international appearances.
