  • Wow with dreadlocks

    Wow with dreadlocks

DREADLOCKS, also known as locks, dreads or jata, are hairs that are matted into coils. Dreadlocks are most often affiliated with the Rastafari movement, but more and more people are wearing dreadlocks. Dreadlocks styles include a dreadlock ponytail, dreadlock drape, and even a deadlock up do. The best style for dreadlocks depends on the length of the dreads. Colourful beads put in the locks is one way to dress dreads up and make them different as in tying the dreads back with a colourful ribbon. Dreadlocks may be a term some of you are not too familiar with. It is quite a popular hairstyle and we are surely aware of this ancient hairstyle as we have seen it on so many celebrities. These are called ‘jata’ in Hindi. The trend of creating dreadlocks on the hair is quite in vogue now and many have even tried this hairstyle. There are many misconceptions about this hairstyle. Many believe that those with dreadlocks refrain from washing their hair. The fact remains that many dreadlocks techniques require the person to brush and shampoo the hair in order to create the dreadlocks.

There are two usual ways of creating dreadlocks. The ancient method is to refrain from brushing and letting the hair grow out and get interlocked in the process to create varying textures, sizes and lengths of dreadlocks. The method is also known as the ‘Neglect’ method. The modern method, however, is used by salons to create artificial dreadlocks on the hair. The salons use special type of beeswax to create the dreadlocks. The use of a special type of wax helps in the removal of it completely using hot water. When the new dreads reach the locking stage, the wax is removed. The benefit is that the customer may get any shape and size dreadlocks as they please.

  • Rock and Rave set for cable TV

A TV Fashion Show aimed to debut on Cable TV would feature a collection of five prominent fashion designers, five upcoming designers, jewellery and bag designers, music, cheographed dance, and other side attractions today at the BESPOKE CENTRE, Lekki, Lagos.

According to Clara Chinwe Okoro, the Executive Producer/COO Brandworld Media, owners of the Rock and Rave Fashion franchise, is organising Fashion TV launch edition tagged “Rock n rave”, today, 1st of December, 2013. “The concept for us was to start an African Fashion TV, where the business of fashion in Africa would be covered in full details. We also realised that we could as well start a Fashion Channel to cover African fashion activities on Cable TV.”

She adds: “Our major partner for the event is FADAN, The Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria.”

In attendance will be important personalities spanning the corporate world, entertainment, business, music, sports, media and movie industries. It will also be parading the cream of the Nigerian celebrity circle.

Okoro says that “What pointed us in this direction was the study conducted by the British Council which asserted that Nigeria stands on the threshold of what could be the greatest transformation in its history with population growth slowing, and its ‘baby boom’ generation entering the workforce. By 2030, it will be one of the few countries in the world with young workers in plentiful supply.”

Okoro goes on to highlight the benefits that can be tapped from the process. “If the country continues with the recent economic growth, improved education and health standards, and creates jobs, the average Nigerian could be three times richer by 2030 and over 30 million people will be lifted out of poverty.”

She also warns that the risks are as great as the opportunities available. “The number of young people frustrated by a lack of jobs and opportunities is on the increase. Nigeria needs to create 25 million jobs over the next 10 years and move its focus away from oil, which contributes 40% to national GDP, but only employs 0.15% of the population.”

Veronica. O. Chimah, CEO cevoma Bespoke Brand, will be speaking on ”The Designer as Brand” alongside Mrs Funmi Ajila-Ladipo who will x-ray the potentials in the fashion sector as an alternative to oil.

Ten prominent Nigerians will receive the Revolution Award which seeks to recognise the African individuals who have contributed to the growth of the sector via their ideas and talent. In the pack, you find seasoned designer of Mudi the Fashion Brand and Mrs Flora Nwazojie of Clear Essence and others.
