  • Experts mull return to African family life

Experts mull return to African family life

The archetype of traditional African society is one that supports communal living, respect for the elderly, marriage institution, especially family life, but that has since become eroded with the advent of western values and culture with all its limitations, warts and all!

The foregoing were experts’ views expressed at a public forum in Lagos, where they dissected the lingering challenges, problems militating against family life and offered practical suggestions on the way forward.

Speaking to a cross-section of participants at the 8th edition of the African Family Life Delegate Conference, a programme organised to commemorate the International Day of the Family by the Institute of Family of Engineering and Development, they observed that there was a need for sober reflection and soul-searching by all if Nigerians, nay Africans desire to turn the tide in the quest to change the narrative around family disintegration.

Firing the first salvo, Professor Ngozi Osarenren, a professor of Counselling at the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, while interrogating the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Embracing Diversity, Strengthening Families,’ said there is need to harness family solutions to resolve the crisis bedeviling the society.

Waxing philosophical, the one-time Commissioner of Education in Edo State said there is need for a paradigm shift in behaviour.

“We learn behaviour to unlearn it and you have to make a deliberate attempt at unlearning it. You have to first of all talk to yourself.”

The family, she said, mirrors the society and speaks to the issues playing out, hence the need for self-evaluation by all and sundry.

“Good is good and bad is bad; there are no two ways about it. There is no shade of bad and shade of good. No. it’s either good or it is not. It’s a question of gradually telling ourselves that we have missed the road, so let’s retrace our steps. It’s just like you are driving to a place and you missed the road to your destination. All you do is to turn around,” she said.

Expatiating, she said, “But for a better society, all our cultural diversities should be harmonised. All the cultural divides should be closed. My final thoughts: we should embrace, accept and celebrate our uniqueness, especially the uniqueness of the African person. We should celebrate it and by celebrating it, we will end up having a global impact and collaboration everywhere. We have the capacity, we can do it. We can do it, it’s talking to ourselves.”

Also speaking at the event, tech entrepreneur Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, who discussed the pathway to exporting African traditions to the rest of the world, said at the root of the endemic problem of poverty in African societies is the pursuance individuality rather than generational solidarity.

“To unlock poverty, it is not going to come from the government, it is going to happen through the coming together of families to build enduring legacies and businesses. If we don’t work together, we won’t overcome poverty. Education and productivity are key factors.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Praise Fowowe, the organiser, said he was inspired to carry on the onerous task of marking the International Day of the Family because there was a yawning gap.

The international family life strategist, advisor, life coach and crisis manager, and founder, Institute of Family Engineering and Development, said this year’s edition had about 1, 780 delegates in a hybrid conference drawn from various sectors with focus on different family life issues as they affect the continent and proffer workable solutions that can chart a new path towards a developed continent of Africa.

Fowowe who has over 24 years post-qualification experience in business and advocacy, said he is driven purely by altruistic, hence he has had no qualms at all trudging on despite challenges of getting sponsorship for the annual event.

“For me, it’s the impact and we hear people say it all the time when they come and they come here to share a lot of testimonies. For me, that’s fulfillment because if we don’t do it, who will do it. We are doing what we have to do because we have to do it. We have the Institute of Family and Engineering so basically, part of the returns we get is what we put in there and we have practitioners of family life and when they come together some of them will drop their little widow’s mite. So it’s self-funded,” he said matter-of-factly.

While reiterating the need for families to imbibe values of integrity, honesty and love, Fowowe, said these virtues are time-tested principles which the pristine African societies were known for.

“When I was growing up you dared not steal and nobody would clap for you if you stole. Now, people steal and people go on and say he is our thief, no don’t persecute him it’s because when your man was there he was chopping and now it’s our turn to chop and things like that. Honesty, love for our people, these are critical values.”

The government, he stressed, must begin to pass the right policies in place. “I hope that the state governments will set up the Ministry of Family Affairs, what we have right now is the Ministry of Women and Affairs and Youths.  It is just scattered and so when you disintegrate family at policy level how are you going to build an effective family? So, we need to get to that point where we have a Ministry of Family Affairs, where we can now decide what the Nigeria family should be like? What should be the values? And that’s why I have been preaching over the years. Once we have this integration, we will be able to raise our children proudly. We will account for every child and every family and provide support for them ultimately.”

“That is is to say, spiritually and physically, overtaking is allowed. So all youths who desire to be somebody in life must be diligent in the work they do and pray very well irrespective of their culture and religion”.

Rita Dominic: How I defied social norms with my marriage

Spunky, astute, and alluring Nollywood actress Rita Dominic, was the cynosure of all eyes when she stormed the podium at this year’s edition of Nana Aba Anamoah’s Women of Valour (WoV) conference, in Accra, Ghana, where she spoke about her journey of self-discovery. She talked about dealing with depression, finding true love, and how she floored her critics, writes OLAITAN GANIU

    Rita, the ‘TV eyes’

Rita Dominic faces different formidable hurdles that later moulded her into the figure she is today. Darkness could have dimmed her sparkling light, but she was destined to be a star.

“My mother said that when she gave birth to me, I literally came out of her stomach, singing and dancing,” she said, giggling.

“In fact, as a baby, I remember my older sister telling me that I would watch anything on television even if it was news, I would have this very serious stared that a baby doesn’t have. I’m always staring at the television with deep concentration, to the extent that they started calling me ‘TV eyes’.

This her quirky personality fueled her passion to nurture the ideal of becoming a screen goddess. As the youngest child of her parents. She started exhibiting her talents – singing and acting – to her sisters and neighbours. Later, she began entertaining her friends in school. In return, they would give her pittance and other child gifts to keep up her performance energy.

“I carried on doing that for years. But back then, respected professionals like medical practitioners, lawyers, engineers, and architects saw actors as wayward people. My dreams seemed unattainable at the time, but what prevented me from giving up my dreams was the unwavering support of my mother.”

Indeed, she is her mother’s daughter

Unlike many African parents who often discourage their children from pursuing a career in entertainment, Dominic, whose parents were healthcare professionals, received full support of her parents.

“I was blessed with a courageous mother who defied societal expectations at the time. She nurtured my dreams. In fact, her guidance propelled me to move on even in the face of uncertainty.

Continuing the 48-year-old actress said, “I’m sharing my mother’s story because, one day, you might be the courageous person who supports another woman’s dream, even if it is not your child. You might be the shoulder of another woman to lean on. Like Serena Williams tells us, every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We are strongest when we cheer each other on.”

After her mother instilled the confidence in her, she is ready for the battlefield. “Despite having parental support on my acting journey, my unshakable believe in my dream of becoming an actor required self-courage.”

So, she decided to study Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she obtained a degree in 1999.

“I studied Theatre arts, and I majored in acting. In fact, I was the only student who majored in acting our final year as others ran away from it,” she enthused.

…she makes her acting debut with a lead role

In 1999, she featured as a lead character in a movie entitled, ‘My Guy’ as a fresh graduate. This happened after she met a veteran comedian Basorge Tariah Jr., who was her senior at the university.

She said, “Luckily for me, my first role in Nollywood was pure luck. After struggling for a few months in Lagos, I ran into an old student who we studied Theatre Arts together at the same university, but he was a few years ahead of me. His name is Basorge, and he is a popular comedian.

“He just said to me, ‘I’m looking to cast an unknown actor in a story; I think you fit it perfectly’. I thought it was a joke until he gave me the script, and that was how I went on to do my first lead role in Nollywood.”

Facing the camera was a big challenge.

It’s common to feel nervous when facing on camera for the first time, with some people even experiencing difficulty in speaking. This exactly want happened to her.

“In school, we were taught to for stage, not for film. Meaning, film and stage acting were completely different. So, when I got on set, I was so confused. I did not understand what I was doing at all.”

But her director, Basorge, guided her through the filming process: “He was patient with me. He told me that on stage, we were taught that you should exaggerate and be lively, but in front of the camera, you should be very subtle. So, I had to learn all these things afresh.”

Guess what happened to her after making a debut as a ‘stargal’ in the film?

“When you start your career with a leading role, it can trick you into thinking that you’ve arrived or that you’re a big star,” she said giggling.

After the excitement of beginning her career on a high note, life happened to her. The acting jobs dried up and to make matters worse, her precious mother passed away.

“My mother, my rock, my support system died in 2001. I will never forget the day when I watched her die in my arms. My older brother and I, my father, watched her slip away. I think about her all the time, as her memory never leaves. It was unbearable for me because I felt she was supposed to be here celebrating and watching me chase my dreams. She was instrumental to who I am today.”

Dominic prayed for a plane clash

The consequences of losing a biological parent could lead to increased risks for schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and other mental issues. So, the sad incidence made her beseeched for her flight to crash on air.

She said, “After her death, I was in a bad place, and I felt like there was no reason to keep going on. During the burial arrangement, I remember being on a turbulent plane from Imo State going back to Lagos, but I did not flinch because I wanted the flight to crash. I was praying that I want this plane to crash so I could see my mother and be with her again.”

Then, her father’s health got deteriorated too. “Life for me took a turn for the worse, both emotionally and financially. My father’s health declined, and he became ill. You know, when a couple is very close and one dies, it affects the other one. I think my father actually stopped living the day my mother died.”

Becoming an orphan brought a mix of challenges that later turbulent her acting career.

She said, “I found myself losing faith in the slow growth of Nollywood; waiting months between jobs felt like an eternity, and then I lost some close friends whom I considered family.”

Then she was rendered homeless, “It was just a turbulent time in my life. I don’t want to dwell too much on that dark period, but it led me to hit rock bottom. I became homeless. I was squatting with people to stretch, and when I say squatting, I’m talking about three to four people in a room. It was a friend’s space, and I was staying there in Lagos,” Dominic said.

She finds a way to ‘Japa’

In 2000, her siblings processed her travelled to London. She said, “In 2001–2002, I put my dreams of stardom on hold as I stopped acting. I left the movie industry and moved to London because it was a very dark period. I had all sorts of issues as I fell out with some friends I considered family, and I just gave up acting for a while. I needed to leave that space for some time. This is something I never told people before.”

While in London, she worked as a caregiver to survive.

“I started working as a caregiver in a care home for adults with special needs. Gradually, I started getting myself together. Some might view it as a step down; I don’t. You see, taking care of others brought me joy and purpose at the time I needed it most. Remember, I took care of my parents when they were ill because I was alone with them, she narrated.”

    No place like home

In 2003, after saving some money in abroad, she returned to home country to move her properties to London. She said, “That was when Nollywood beginning to thrive. In fact, they were now calling it Nollywood because we used to call it the Nigerian film industry then.

“Some of the film producers were urging me to stay, but I felt it was risky, I didn’t want to lose my job in abroad, and I had also started a drama school in London. A few days before I was to go back to London, Genevieve Nnaji called me and told me that she had given my number to a producer for a film. I was like, ‘You know I’m going back?’ and she advised me to listen to what they had to offer.

“I considered the offer as the producer signed me on for a project and we started working on different projects… and the jobs kept coming. At some point, I decided that I was going to stay in Nigeria and the rest is now history.”

That was how she regained her lost fame, featuring in a string of movies and dramas, including ‘Children of Terror’, ‘Back from America’, ‘The Intruder’ with Richard Mofe Damijo and Stella Damasus-Aboderin, ‘The Meeting’, ’76’, ‘Shattered’ among. She has since featured in over 100 motion-picture projects.

Over the years, she has won several local and international awards, including the City People Awards in 2004 as the Most Outstanding Actress. She is the only actress to have won the AMVCA’s Best Actress award in both the drama and comedy categories. She is also the only West African actress to have won Kenya’s Kalasha Awards.

     Finding love at ‘old age’

The news of her marriage to Fidelis Anosike, publisher of the Daily Times, was met with criticism and backlash on social media.

On April 19, 2022, the couple held their traditional wedding in the actress’s state of origin, Imo State.

“My sweetheart, my husband, traveled down to my state, Imo, to marry me traditionally,” she said.

“My story about finding love and ultimately marrying a man I love at an age that most Africans consider old was vigorously discoursed for my amusement on social media.

“As we celebrated, glimpses of resistance emerged from certain quarters, notably from self-appointed gatekeepers of African culture. Their collective reaction revealed a societal mindset deeply ingrained that often denies women the agency to decide when and whom to marry.”

Explaining the reason for the cyber-attack, Dominic said it was because she refused to conform to societal norms of getting married at a certain age.

“For years, I was hounded with the ‘when will you marry brigade,’, ‘when are you going to marry’, ‘you no go marry’, or you are old ooo!,” she said.

“I always brush it up with the truth, when I find someone that I care enough to marry. I’ll marry the man of my dreams, not the man society dreams for me. To be honest with you, it was not easy. The world would not care about your happiness in marriage, you are the one that will live with the person and love the person, not the society. So I refuse to yield to those societal pressures because, above all, I am human,” she said.

MFM Abuja’s inaugural men’s conference focuses on economic empowerment

For three days, thousands of participants from the nook and cranny of the Federal Capital Territory, the North and other parts of the country thronged to the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries‘ inaugural men’s deliverance and economic empowerment conference.

The event which was recently held was the first of its kind organised by God’s Men of Valour North at the MFM International Headquarters in Wuye, Abuja.

Themed ‘Challenge: Fear Not, Stand Firm,’

The conference was aimed to help empower men and train them in business skills.

The three-day event particularly drew attendees from the Northern region and was presided over by the General Overseer of the MFM Ministries worldwide, Dr. Daniel Olukoya.

The summit also featured an exhibition of works of men from MFM churches in the Northern Region, and Eagle Hour Fellowship, and seminars with topics such as, ‘Entrepreneurship the Key to Sustainable Economic Growth,’ ‘Business Planning; Development and Growth Methodologies and Benefits,’ ‘The Rules and preparations for a Successful Businessman,’ and ‘Data Protection – the Vehicle for Sustaining Businesses.’

In addition to this, the symposium organised syndicate group meetings on strategic planning for pre- and post-retirement, consultants, contractors, service providers, business owners, civil and public servants, and job applicants.

The event also featured interactive sessions where participants asked the church’s General Overseer, Dr. Olukoya, questions intending to find lasting solutions.

A high point of the event was the presentation of awards to the International Patron, Coach God’s Men of Valour and General Overseer of MFM, Dr. Daniel Olukoya; the Global Chairman  GMOV, Pastor  Kunle Adesanya; GMOV  National Coordinator North, Dr Michael Bayo Akinola; GMOV Wuye Coordinator, Dr. Elijah Tokunbo Daniel ; Air Vice Marshal Ade Adekunle, the Chairman of  Eagles Fellowship; and the Chairman of Kingdom Builders MFM Wuye, Dr Olasupo Agbaje, to mention a few.

Welcoming participants to the event, the GMOV National Coordinator for the North, Dr. Michael Bayo Akinola, described the conference as a vehicle of unending economic prosperity and a platform for men to discover themselves.

Akinola said, “The first edition of this conference is to empower all participants, especially our men, to learn new skills and to be self-sufficient. It is to end poverty and ensure that the people enjoy peace and prosperity.

“It will increase men’s organisational effectiveness and growth, positively impact them, boost their economic diversification and, in turn, support their economic resilience, and teach them how to access markets and have control over resources.”

Speaking earlier on the topic, ‘The Eagle Man,’, the General Overseer,  MFM worldwide, Olukoya,  described man as the central figure in God’s plan, stressed that God is looking for men, real men who know the reason God made the men.

He said:  “Man is a central figure in the divine operation and the central agenda of the almighty, so if man fails God, the world also fails. God is looking for men, real men who know the reason God made them men.

“Unfortunately many men are pursuing their selfish agenda at the detriment of God’s agenda for their lives. Men need to have an intimate relationship with God and be willing to possess God’s power and godly character.

“You must be spiritually alive, refuse to be overwhelmed by any problem, and embrace discipline. Men need to embrace their families, turn a good leaf, and make a good investment of their time, talent, and treasures.”

In addition, the General Overseer, Olukoya preached in his sermon with the theme, ‘My Siege is Over,’ which was taken from the Bible’s book of Jeremiah 52: 1-13.

Olukoya described a siege as “an act of surrounding and attacking a place to isolate the place from receiving help, as well as cutting a place off from communication ensuring supplies do not get to the person.

“When a life, individual, community, or nation is under siege, there will be desolation, emptiness, total elimination, poverty, waste,  hardship, loss of good things and benefits, hunger, pains, and death to mention a few.”

He called for total repentance, admonishing all to give their lives to Jesus Christ, come to God through Jesus Christ, imbibe the Spirit and be determined to change for good.

Olukoya, said Satan puts an individual, a family, a city, a community and nation under a siege with the idea of building up angry people in the nation.

He explained that a nation under siege may not face war,  or be violently attacked but things will not be normal, neither will good things be happening in such a nation.

He said when a life, individual, community or nation is under siege, there will be desolation, emptiness, total elimination, poverty, waste,  hardship, loss of good things and benefits, hunger, pains, and death to mention a few.

For a way out of siege causing myriads of problems bedevilling individuals, nations and the world at large, Olukoya asked individuals to come to God through Jesus Christ, be determined to change for good and seek God’s intervention for deliverance out of siege.

The programme witnessed several testimonies of salvation, divine instant healings, deliverance,  and open doors.

Likewise in his exhortation themed, ‘Who is a man?’ the Assistant General Overseer in charge of Mission and Evangelism, Pastor Abiodun Ladejola, warned men against evil addiction, sexual immorality, and Get-Rich-Quick syndrome, among others, which he said are major vices pulling men down from top position God has destined them to permanently be.

Speaking on the successes and challenges of the GMOV,  the Global Chairman of the platform, Pastor Kunle Adesanya, stated, “The Men of Valour is focused on men’s personal growth, and to this end, we hold job training sessions for men to enhance their economic sustenance.

“There is a cooperative society that helps support men through the provision of housing, vocational training, and apprenticeship skills.”

Also speaking at the event, the host,  the Senior Regional Overseer(SRO), MFM International Annex Headquarters, Wuye, Abuja, Pastor Edwin Etomi, described the conference as “very needful in the present time when different challenges are overwhelming and depressing the hearts of men.”

Likewise, in his goodwill message, The Regional Overseer, Special Duties, MFM International Headquarters Annex, Abuja, Pastor  David Bolaji, said the conference was timely, crucial and of great importance for all men who desire to achieve and excel in their destiny assignment revealed that women are not left out.

On his part, the GMOV National Coordinator North Central, Thompson Douglas, highlighted some of the group’s successful stories and Corporate Social Responsibility programmes which he said are aimed to benefit both members, non-members, the church, and host communities,  Douglas explained that the group offers food items and cash gifts to widows, and orphans, creates employment opportunities for members, and trains members in different skills with starter packs to start up their businesses.

He also enumerated the proposed GMOV North investments for income generation to include: oil block acquisition, acquisition of shared in blue chip companies, application for land in FCDA for estate development for men, outdoor advertisement (Bill Boards) investment portfolios, registration of GMOV North cooperative society and GMOV  North executives revolving scheme.

Douglas added, “GMOV Northern Region is one big family bonded together by the love of Jesus Christ.  We organised seminars and rallies aimed at educating both members and the wider community about the teaching of Jesus Christ. We implement welfare packages for our brethren to mention a few.”

Highlighting the goals of GMOV Global in his paper presentation, the group’s Deputy Chairman, Johnson Olusetire, noted that members are uplifted economically through policy financing, zero-to-low-interest loans, grants, mobilisation of the private sector investment, and provision of political risk insurance.

“It is unlikely that communities and countries will experience change in the long term if the men aren’t reached and discipled. If men have positive change and transformation, it will not be a magic wand for the world, nations, countries, communities, churches, and families to experience positive change,” Olusetire added.

A business expert and one of the senior pastors in MFM, Dr. Moses Adebowale, noted that every would-be successful man must know about business planning, goals, development, and growth methodologies.

“Growing a company and making it more successful is a practical aspect of the business deal, seeking new business opportunities, building relationships, seeking connections, and entering into strategic partnerships.

“For healthy methodologies for outstanding success in business every businessman or woman must have a positive disposition with a good attitude, identify their target audience, and focus on value distribution that is making one’s products valuable to the immediate society.

“They need to find a better way to penetrate the market, create value and needs for one’s products, making one’s product too important and relevant to the needs of the people, repackaging one’s product/stuff to compete with the current trends as well as diversification.”

In his paper presentation, ‘God’s Men of Valour, Vehicle for Economic Development,’ the GMOV Global Deputy Chairman, Pharmacist Johnson Olusetire, explained  that GMOV believes change starts with addressing the root of the matter ‘The Men.’

Johnson  opined that it is unlikely that communities and countries will experience a change in the long term if the men aren’t reached and discipled.

He said if Men had positive change and transformation, it would not be a wonder for the world, nations,  countries, communities, churches and families to experience positive change.

He urged men to guide their hearts with the word of God, be like Christ and conform to Christ’s image, however, develop and build meaningful relationships with other men on the same journey creating a supportive network of encouragement and accountability.

Olusetire, stressed that  Men should stand for strength, and morals,  be of courage, strength of mind, firmness, courage and decisiveness.

He said ‘Men of Valour’  is changing families and communities by changing men.

On practical aspects of using GMOV to uplift members economically, Olusetire revealed that GMOV  provides financial development and policy financing, provides zero-to-low-interest loans and grants, mobilizes private sector investment and provides advice, provides political risk insurance (guarantees) as well as settles investment disputes with a view to changing lives.

According to him, “change starts with addressing the root of the matter: The Men.”

Men generally can receive positive change and transformation, marriages, families, churches, communities and the country at large  would be transformed positively.
