  • Lagos PFN crisis festers Members divided over resolutions

Lagos PFN crisis festers Members divided over resolutions

The election of Rev Toyin Kehinde as the new chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has ruffled the feathers within the PFN Family.

Rev Kehinde’s election has divided members of the body. While many have accepted the new chairman, others have called for the cancellation of the election that threw up the new chairman.

The crisis within the PFN started when a letter emerged from the National President of PFN, Bishop Wale Oke, that the election had been annulled, and a new election had been slated for June 30.

According to a letter, signed by the National Secretary of PFN, Cosmas Ilechukwu, which was made available to The Nation, the PFN disclosed that “after prayerful consideration of the election, and the circumstances surrounding it, the National President has decided to withhold assent to the outcome of the election.”

The PFN explained that it arrived at the decision because “the election was hastily conducted without adequate sensitization of members and proper Preparation, it added that two of the four candidates that reportedly contested the election have vehemently denied being present or participated in the election.

He said “So many people within the Lagos PFN have severally complained about the way and manner the election was conducted. The fact that only eight members of the State Adversary Council (SAC) voted in the election in a state as big as Lagos leaves a sour taste in the mouth.”

Going forward, Ilechukwu said that the president has therefore decided as follows: “The February 5 election of new executive officers of the Lagos State Chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) is hereby canceled.

“The State Advisory Council for Lagos State will be expanded to 25 members carefully drawn to fully represent the diverse interests that constitute the membership of the fellowship in the State.”

He posited that the reconstituted and expanded SAC would conduct a new election within the next two months ending ‘on the 30th of June 2024. The extant executive will continue in office until the new election is concluded.

The National President has therefore appointed a committee of senior leaders led by Bishop Emmah lsong, the National Publicity Secretary, to oversee the election which will be conducted by the new SAC.

     The background to the crisis.

Two years ago, Apostle Enyinnaya Okwuonu became the Chairman of the PFN in Lagos following the unfortunate demise of the late PFN Chairman, Bishop Sola Ore, two years into his second tenure.

As the Vice Chairman, he completed Bishop Ore’s tenure which lapsed in 2022.

As the constitution of PFN states, “After the expiration of a Chairman in any state, the National body of the fellowship will set in motion the process of the election. The State Advisory Council (SAC) of PFN will conduct an election. At least 60% of members that make up the SAC must be present to participate in the election. After an election has been held, the newly elected chairman and other executive’s names will be presented to the National President who approves or disapproves the outcome of the election. It is not like the general elections done in politics.

Unfortunately, the delay in the election of a new Chairman in Lagos lingered for almost two years because the national body of PFN did not set in motion the process of the election of a new Chairman Bishop.  Apostle Okwuonu was then directed to act as Chairman. The delay later became loud as uncertainties loomed within the PFN family in Lagos.

Last year, a group with the name Pentecostal Association of Nigeria and Diaspora (PAND), led by one Apostle James Jesulere, in a publication on June 26, made sundry allegations against the Lagos State Chairman of PFN. They accused the chairman of tenure elongation, financial impropriety, biases, as well as ethnic and tribal bigotry.

Okwuonu debunked the allegations and stated that the allegations were an ‘attempt to drag the fellowship into the dark and murky waters of ethnicity and bigotry.

     The controversy

After so much pressure from the National body of the PFN, an inside source with the PFN stated that in January 2024, there was a directive for an election to be conducted as soon as possible. The source noted that a demand for an official letter to kick-start the process was provided.

However, before the election, a top Bishop in Lagos was allegedly rooting for a candidate and mounting pressure for such a candidate to be announced by fiat as the Lagos State Chairman of PFN which would be unconstitutional and might even worsen the state of things in Lagos State.

After a convenient date and time were set, Monday, 5th of February 2024 was announced as the date of the election.  The election was held with the Lagos State Advisory Council (SAC) of PFN, who formed the electorate and were on the ground to vote. Nine out of eleven members of the working committee which is 81.8% of the electorate were present to participate in the election. This figure is at variance with the figure of 14 members stated by the National President in his letter. The National Administrative Secretary of PFN was also present as an observer. The election was held and the Senior Pastor at Agape Generation International Church, Rev. Dr. Toyin Kehinde, emerged as the new state chairman with an overwhelming majority. Rev Kehinde is the current Secretary of the South West Chapter of PFN.

The problem started when an online report came out after the election that four candidates contested for the chairmanship position of PFN in Lagos State. They are the Senior Pastor at Agape Generation International Church, Rev. Dr. Toyin Kehinde, The Senior Pastor, of Foundation of Truth Assembly, Rev. Yomi Kasali, Pastor Femi Paul, and the incumbent Chairman, Apostle Eyinnaya Okwuonu.

In response to the online report, one of the alleged contestants, Rev Kasali publicly denied participation in the PFN Lagos State Chairmanship Election, correcting an online publication that wrongly listed him as a candidate.

He said “I never participated in the just concluded PFN election as reported by some online publications. This is a response to an online publication about the just concluded PFN election for Lagos State.

“The online publication said I participated in that election that took place on Monday, February 5th. This news conference is just to state the fact that I did not participate in that election as the online publication stated that my name was on the ballot,” he said.

Read Also: Economy: Experts predict mid-year drop in prices

Kasali, who said that his name which was on the ballot could either be an error or mischievously added that he chose the latter because of what transpired on January 29.

“Before the election, I got a call from the Southwest Vice President of PFN, His Grace, Archbishop John Osa-Oni.

“He asked me if I was available to attend the PFN meeting scheduled for February 5. I asked him what for. He said it was an election that my name had been nominated to be the chairman of Lagos state PFN and he would like me to come and participate in an election process.

“My response after I thought about it was that I was not interested, hence, I declined,” he said.

He stated further: “The reason why I declined was because it was an election. I did not decline to serve the body of Christ. I declined because of the process. This was how everything went until when the election was held. Why was my name on the ballot?

“I called Rev Toyin Kehinde to congratulate him, but he didn’t pick up. We thereafter exchanged text messages on the same”.

Rev Kasali has publicly congratulated the new Chairman and prayed for his success.

Then, what happened with the new directive from the National President annulling the election is a puzzle to be unraveled. The questions are who is interested in Lagos PFN? What kind of chairman do they want?

Meanwhile, the CAN Chairman, the Lagos State Chapter, who also doubles as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Bishop STV Adegbite, has described the purported annulment as unacceptable and an attempt to use the church for politics.

In his response, “And anybody thinking that they can use the church for politics will be vehemently rejected. Nobody can take Lagos from us. We’ll not accept that the election that was conducted and a winner emerged is canceled. It’s not acceptable to us in Lagos.

“The election has been held in Lagos, and Rev. Dr. Toyin Kehinde has emerged. The Christian community in Lagos is saying no to another election. That’s manipulation, and we are not going to accept it, ” he fumed.

     Way forward

The letter by the National President of PFN stated that the new date for the new election is June 30 with an expanded SAC, and will be conducted by the National Publicity Secretary of the Fellowship, Bishop Emmah lsong.

Preferring the way forward, some clerics within the PFN family in Lagos have voiced their concerns

Speaking, the Presiding Archbishop of Calvary Kingdom Church (CKC), Lagos Joseph Ojo, said. “We are trying to come to the same page; that is what the leaders are trying to do, we want to forge ahead. We don’t want to do anything or say anything that will jeopardize or worsen the situation.

“I am sure after the troubling waters; everything will settle down. We will be able to have a clear view of everything.”

According to him, the national president’s position should be followed to the letter to avert any unforeseen crisis. “I believe we have a president; the stand of the president is what we should abide by – everything will be okay.

“The president has said everything should be on hold until there is a holistic view of it,” Ojo said, confirming a possible annulment of the election.

On the allegation that Toyin Kehinde has attended three state functions in the last six weeks in the capacity of the state chairman without any former inauguration or unveiling by the Fellowship, Ojo said, “To me, nobody should unilaterally stop him, and he should also be wise enough to allow everything settle down; so that there will be no complication.”

Another member of the Fellowship also added his voice to the issue, saying that it is sad that Lagos with vibrant men of God with so much influence across Nigeria and beyond will be washing its dirty linen in public.

According to him, the Lagos State chapter of the PFN is supposed to be a vibrant voice within the Fellowship but in the recent past, the chapter is losing out in terms of matters within the PFN. “In most states, PFN chairmen are ministers of God who have respect and influence within and outside the church. They are men of influence within the church and in community work.

“They have real influence and can stand before anybody. They already have a name. They can stand before governors and presidents without any strings attached. Many of those who make up the executives in Lagos do not have influence, they tried to use PFN to market their names,” said.

He advised that the national president of PFN should look for a respected someone who has influence, who is not hungry or looking for contact with people.

“That person should be a Yoruba man because of ethnicity. I am not rooting for an ethnic job but when people are emotional about things, you will try to pacify them.”

According to him, an interim chairman who is Yoruba can be appointed, while the appointed caretaker committee chairman should also be a Yoruba man but not necessarily from Lagos to bring balance and neutrality to play.

“This should be done with a clear understanding with the CAN chairman in Lagos, Bishop Stephen Adegbite so we don’t wash our dirty linen in public. Rev Kehinde should step aside as the election that brought him in was controversial, divisive, and already faulty.”

  • How Region 44 of RCCG rocked Ota with Praise Encounter

How Region 44 of RCCG rocked Ota with Praise Encounter

The days seem over when Easter was observed in absolute solemnity with the suffering and eventual death of Jesus Christ on the cross as the focal point. More and more, the Christian community is seeing Easter not just from the prism of suffering and death but also from the perspective of triumph over sin and the gift of everlasting life.

The foregoing accounts for why Easter period is now for most churches an occasion for social interaction and merrymaking. Hence they have designed various programmes that set Easter apart as an occasion to wine, dine and engage in other forms of social interaction.

For members of the Region 44 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Otta, Ogun State, the means for achieving this is the annual Praise Encounter; a programme that features stage performance by reputable gospel artistes. And this year was no exception with scintillating performances by various artistes who held the gathering at Honda Manufacturing Playing Ground on Idiroko Road, Otta spell-bound with their songs.

The all-night event did not exempt political heavyweights in the state, traditional rulers, youths and lovers of gospel music in general. The open ground was filled to capacity, causing the gathering to spill to the ever-busy Idiroko Road and saddling the security agents with the onerous task of controlling both the crowd and the vehicular movements.

The star performance for the night was delivered by the popular Yoruba gospel artiste, Tope Alabi, who arrested the attention of attendees as well as passers-by with her sonorous voice and mesmerizing dance steps.

Not only did she entertain the crowd, her ministration and altar call drew hundreds of people out to confess their sins and give their lives to Christ.

The songstress expressed her joy at the opportunity to experience another praise encounter with Ota as the new venue.

She said: “I see God making it happen every year. That is why I expect praise encounter and it gives me the opportunity to minister in my own kind of ministration.

“I don’t have a ministry as a church at the moment, but I have small group we gather and pray together and I admonish them.

“I pray and wait till God says something before I leave. When you do these, you will leave with blessings, you will leave with songs and lyrics that people will marvel at what God would do.”

Chuks Uche, the gospel artiste whose electrifying performance ignited the over 10,000 capacity crowd at the open ground of Honda Manufacturing Company, sang most of his songs in Igbo.

Recalling how he became a part of the show, he said: “I was excited when Pastor Godwin Obadan put a call through to me that I was going to perform here in Ota.

“We used to have the programme in Ikorodu (Lagos) before Pastor Obadan was suddenly transferred to Ogun State.”

Uche, who said his expectation for the congregation was for them to receive miracle through his songs, added that his worship song was billed to hit the airwaves on social media on April 12.

The RCCG Region 44 mass choir was not left behind as they performed in colourful Hausa outfit after the Yoruba, Edo, Igbo and Efik groups had taken turns to thril the crowd.

Children groups were also not left out as more than 100 of them mimed to some popular gospel songs.

Adegbite Johnson, Grace D’eulogier, Boiz Olorun, Fomzy Music, Yetunde Are, Minister Chucks, Minister Afolashade and Jenet Praise were also there to entertain the crowd.

The Boiz Olorun, an Apala group, was led by Feranmi Biala, who took out time to talk about his kind of music.

He said: “The genre is Apala, the message is gospel. The Christian community accepted the music from the beginning. We received a very encouraging acceptance from the church.

“The Holy Spirit is my inspirer. My view for the gospel of our Lord Jesus is being communicated in a way that people would want to relate with.

“So, each time I have the opportunity to do that, I just want to go with that scripture that says whatever your hand finds doing, do it with all your heart.

“So, basically, my inspiration is the Holy Spirit.

The Olota of Ota, Prof. Abdulkarim Adeyemi Obalanlege, represented by the Onibudo of Ayetoro Obudo-Otta, Oba (Dr) Adewumi Adeniji Odutala and the Oba-in-Council, in his endorsement of the event, described it as a cleansing of the land.

He said: “We are happy to be associated with this kind of programme. We have witnessed programmes like this, but this is bigger and better.

“In my community, we have one we call festival of praise in Decembers.

“Some people think that we in Ota are fetish idol worshipers, but I am telling you that Ota is a city of God, a city that God loves so much, and we want more of this programme to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ.”

Oba Odutala added that the programme should not be a one-off but a regular event, adding that the people in his kingdom and environment would be expecting. He also promised to support its organisers in whatever way he can.

He quoted the Olota as saying that whenever the church of God called on him, he and his chiefs would be ready to answer and support them.

“This is big and beautiful. This is what we want in our community; not secular party. This is giving back praise to the King of Kings. We used to hear about it in other towns. It is now the turn of Ota,” he said to the admiration of the cheering crowd.

The Region 44 pastor in Ota family, Dr Seun Aderibigbe, who described the event as provoking heaven to rain blessings on Ota and Ogun State generally, said: “We underestimate the power of praise. Five kings were silenced against one king (Usa) by the power of praise; just because he raised a praise altar unto God.

Read Also: Lifting the lid on Kaduna’s debt controversy

“This is our own way of raising praise unto God and say God, remember our land, remember Ota, remember Ogun, remember Nigeria.”

Aderibigbe, who expressed optimism that Nigeria will bounce back from its current economic travails, added: “This nation shall witness revival, restoration and total victory over all the challenges we are facing at the moment. When praises goes up, blessings come down.

“Pastor Godwin Obadan and I worked together at Ikorodu where we organised praise encounter. As God would have it, we met again in Ota and we then planned to make it better and bigger.”

The preacher at the occasion and continental overseer for Continent 3 (South West, Nigeria & Middle East) of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Johnson Funso Odesola, took his message from Luke 18: 35 with the theme: Your time of encounter.

Odesola said that God can make way where there is no way, making reference to Exodus: 14:21. “He (God) can turn Mr Nobody to Mr Somebody. In Genesis 32:28, He can make doors of supernatural destiny open.

“How do I know? You have to be sensitive to the move of encounter, cry out for help (Jeremiah 3:33) and surrender to the master (Matt.11 23-30).

“Life is turn by turn. There is always a turn for every environment, every sector, and now is the turn of Ota, because when an encounter comes, the dynamics change, destiny changes and miracles are generated and distributed.

“This is the season that God wants Ota to experience and enjoy the wonders of God.”

One of the organisers and provincial pastor of RCCG Ogun Province 3, Pastor Godwin Obadan promised to bring more artistes in the subsequent editions.

“We have more popular artistes who promised to perform at “Praise Encounter” next year. The challenge of space is manageable and we also have space for cars this year.

“We will intensify on control of the crowd. Our medical team is fantastic. We have more than 10,000 participants here today, mainly youth.

“It is a starting point for Region 44. We have more to come on the next edition. We will prepare for a bigger and more spacious venue here in Ota.

“Participants here today are more than 10,000. Other people were standing outside the ground and across the road. We ensured the safety of people on the road and other places at the ground.

“Praise is what I love, and God is blessing my ministry through songs, music and dance in praising Him (God).

“When I was transferred to Ogun province, I sold the idea to the regional pastor and he immediately welcomed it and we put what you witnessed.

“All the artistes that we invited physically performed.”

The member of the House of Representatives representing Ado Odo/Otta Federal Constituency, Akinosi Olatunji Akinni, described the praise encounter as unprecedented.

“The crowd is unbelievable, and praising God is what this country needs now, I thank God that it is starting in my constituency.

“We shall continue to host it as long as the Redeemed Christian Church of God will continue to bring it here.

“All the support that they want, both from the state and the federal, we shall provide.

“My governor would have loved it so much if he had known that this is the kind of worship we are having here today.

“This year’s is gone, but if you bring it next year, I am certain my governor will be here.”

The lawmaker thanked God and for the programme and the cleansing of the land.

  • Good old chewing sticks return to hygiene list!

Good old chewing sticks return to hygiene list!

Ibos call it ‘Atu.’ Yorubas call it ‘Pako ewuro.’ Hausas also call it ‘Sandar tauna’. Generally, it is known in Africa as a chewing stick. Across supermarkets in Europe it is labeled as ‘Stick toothbrush’. Other places it is called ‘Miswak stick’.

Long before triple-action, soft-bristle, flexible action toothbrushes lined the oral care aisle of the grocery store, ancient cultures in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East used this deceptively simple tool known as a chewing stick to brush their teeth.

The stick, a twig from different trees like Guava, Bitter leaf, Dongoyaro, miswak–a twig from the Arak tree etcetera has been in existence for years but the intrusion of tooth brush and tooth paste with its convenience pushed chewing sticks out of homes.

However, as more people are thinking of health instead of convenience, chewing sticks are gradually creeping back into homes.

More consumers are beginning to appreciate the health benefits and demand for the old chewing stick, resulting in popular supermarkets across the world now displaying stick toothbrushes on their shelves.

Before conventional western wisdom had us believe that this simple tool has been replaced by something better, evidence is mounting that brushing your teeth with a stick has some very compelling benefits.

Stick toothbrushes are small sticks from some special trees, and are easily bristled for brushing. Trees from where the twigs are gotten depends on the trees predominately in an area. For instance, the majority of chewing sticks used in Nigeria are derived from the Bitter kola, Dongoyaro trees which are common trees with great health benefits while in the Middle East, Miswak from the Arak tree is common.

However, these trees are no ordinary trees. The branches and twigs of these trees contain a startling number of natural substances that promote oral health and hygiene, including the following:

    ●Vitamin C: promotes immune health

    ● Silica: gentle abrasive to remove plaque, tartar, and stains

    ● Tannins: kills bacteria and helps prevent gingivitis

    ● Mineral Compounds (calcium oxide, calcium fluoride, sodium bicarbonate): fortifies teeth and bones

    ● Alkaloids (Trimethylamine and Salvadorine): helps fight infections

    ● Resins: helps prevent cavities by fortifying enamel

    ● Organic Sulphur: fights gingivitis and improves tooth sensitivity.

Different cultures have been using the chewing stick for thousands of years as part of traditional wisdom, but in recent years, it has been gaining more worldwide popularity as a holistic oral care regimen.

Benefits of Using a Stick Toothbrush

In 1986 and 2000, the World Health Organization[WHO] vouched for the effectiveness and benefits of using a stick toothbrush. And in 2008, one study showed that chewing stick users in Sudan had better overall oral health than many toothbrush users!

With sustained use, chewing stick users can expect to enjoy some impressive benefits.

*Cavity Prevention. Using a chewing stick helps increase saliva production (one of nature’s best defenses against tooth decay). The antibacterial and astringent properties of the substances in the chewing stick also stave off bacterial infections that can lead to tooth decay.

*Enamel Protection. The resins in the chewing stick help coat and fortify the surface of the teeth, defending against damage from acidic foods. Chewing sticks also contain sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and calcium oxide, which help preserve and strengthen enamel.

*Tooth Whitening. The fibers of the chewing stick, which contain the gentle abrasive silica, can help remove stains and whiten teeth over time.

*No Toothpaste Needed! Many people are surprised to find that a chewing stick requires no toothpaste or tooth powder. It’s an all-in-one tooth-cleaning machine.

Read Also: Sanwo-Olu distributes rice to Lagos councils, LCDAs

*Effectively Removes Plaque, Tartar, and Debris. The bristles of the chewing stick are very effective at quickly removing plaque, residue, and foreign particles from the mouth, including stubborn tartar.

*Improves Bad Breath. Reducing the amount of residue and promoting blood flow is important for good breath. Chewing sticks also helps improve the breath through subtle, naturally-occurring essential oils.

*Gingivitis, Periodontal Disease, and Gum Disease Prevention. The chewing stick is as good for the gums as it is for the teeth, promoting blood flow, fighting gingivitis with organic sulphur and tannins, flushing out harmful bacteria, and increasing saliva production.

*Reduced Pain and Inflammation. The chewing stick contains both analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe irritated gums or mouth tissue and cankers.

*Affordable. Each chewing stick can be used about six or seven times (each day you use the chewing stick, you cut off the used portion). However, even considering the fact that the chewing stick must be replaced more often than a traditional toothbrush, keep in mind that you no longer need a toothbrush or toothpaste–and that you gain numerous health benefits not found in a common toothbrush!

*Organic and Sustainable. The average person will use more than 160 toothbrushes in the course of a lifetime (which is why almost 5 billion plastic toothbrushes find their way to landfills every year). That’s a lot of plastic and a lot of chemical processes related to manufacturing. Using a stick, in comparison, creates almost zero waste or chemicals.

*Hygienic. You’ll cut the tip off your stick toothbrush daily, meaning that unlike a toothbrush, bacteria won’t have a chance to accumulate on the bristles!

*Conserves Water. The stick toothbrush doesn’t require any water for use.

The sheer number of oral health benefits found in this one tiny stick is impressive. And for proponents of oral health and holistic health solutions, the chewing stick is an ideal alternative to the toothbrush.

Mrs. Ifeoma Ike, a dentist, said she combines a chewing stick with a toothbrush. She said that every evening she uses a chewing stick to clean her mouth, most mornings when she is not in a rush; she still uses a chewing stick after which she uses a toothbrush just for that mint freshness.

The over sixty-years-old woman said that one cannot overemphasise the importance of chewing sticks. “I have been using it for over forty years now and I have never experienced any tooth problem. I know many people who come to me with tooth issues that I introduced to chewing sticks and as they consistently used chewing sticks, their tooth problems vanished.”

EnterpriseNGR, a member-led professional advocacy group promoting the Nigerian Financial and Professional Services (FPS) sector, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up the Africa Roundtable of Financial Centres -a chapter of the World Alliance of International Financial Centres (WAIFC).
