  • Justice for SGBV victims: CSOs, Lagos judges, converge

Justice for SGBV victims: CSOs, Lagos judges, converge

For sexual and gender-based violence offenders who capitalise on Nigeria’s prolonged justice system to perpetrate their heinous crimes, it may no longer be business as usual.

This is as frontline women rights advocacy body, Project Alert on Violence Against Women in partnership with the Open Society on Justice Reform Project (OSJRP) with support from the Lagos State Domestic & Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) came together to deliberate on way forward in a two-day stakeholders workshop titled: “Integrated Response To Advancing Justice And Accountability in Lagos State.”

Speaking at the event held at Watercrest Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, on the 7th and 8th of March, Executive Director, Project Alert, Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, said the programme is a two-year project being supported by the Open Society Africa aimed at focusing on enhancing response to cases of sexual and gender-based violence in Lagos State.

Even as she admitted that Lagos State stands out in terms of response to sexual and gender-based violence, she said, “There is still a lot to be done, because we still hear victims saying ‘I leave it to God;’ and when a victim of sexual violence says, ‘I leave it to God,’ that is not the first choice. It’s because they are frustrated and tired.  What are the challenges? These are the things we are here to discuss. Starting from the police station. What is the response? How quickly do the police move in terms of investigation? As it is often said, justice delayed is justice denied. What are victims’ experiences at the police station?  What is the time frame of response to moving a case to the DPP’s (Director of Public Prosecution) office, if it is a criminal matter? When does it get to court, and how long does it take to dispense justice in the court? That is why we have the police, the Justice Ministry, the judiciary, lawyers and civil society groups here to work as a team. That is why the project is called Integrated Response, meaning everyone has a role to play  office.

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Sexual offences Court, High Court of Lagos State, speaking to the media, said the effort to combat SGBV has to be coordinated for optimum result. He commended the society, the non-governmental organisations, and the Lagos State Government, especially for taking the campaign to schools, such that victims can now report to their teachers/counselors for onward action. He, however, said the society as a whole, still has to do more in the area of getting offenders to report cases.

“Regarding victims coming out to report, that has not been as good as the efforts put in by the government. Victims don’t come out, and if you do not report the crime, the implication is that the offender will not be brought to justice; and the larger implication for society is that there may be a repeat of these offences, and ultimately, other victims may be affected by this same perpetrators.”

He said the two-day workshop would help stakeholders, especially the government, investigators, prosecutors brainstorm and have a robust discussion on manners of dealing with the menace.

On the issue of prolonged cases, Justice Oshodi said the Lagos State government has a specialised division that deals with sexual and gender-based violence, to ensure that justice is delivered timelessly.

“The Lagos State government has done a lot more and we are able to deliver judgment in timely fashion, particularly because of the guidance we get from the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Practice direction that says judgment in criminal cases should be delivered within 365 days.”

Executive Director, Open Society of Justice Reform Project (OSJRP), Samuel Akpolokun said the project was informed by the spate at which sexual and gender-based violence is going, “despite the fact that Lagos State, especially, has been proactive in promulgating laws and showing a lot of political will towards eradicating the menace.”

“We also noticed what we would call impunity on the part of the perpetrators. It is for these reasons this project was conceived. The idea is not to promulgate another law, but to harness the strength and abilities of the stakeholders to have a stronger force to combat sexual and gender-based violence. You know that when you push with a finger, you may not have much force but when you clench your fist together and punch, you can then have greater and more effective impact. That is the background behind this project.”

The OSJRP is a fully Nigerian organisation out to achieve a more just and safer society.

  • In Gombe, firewood is precious than gold as poverty bites harder

In Gombe, firewood is precious than gold as poverty bites harder

…Residents fall trees in forest reserve for firewood

In June 2013, the former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki who was then the Senate Committee Chairman on Environment and Ecology declared that

Nigeria’s daily firewood consumption stands at 266 million kg.

Saraki said this at the unveiling of the “Face of the Earth Africa (FOTEA)’’ to commemorate the 2013 World Environmental Day.

The senator said such consumption was too enormous for the country’s forests to bear, and could lead to deforestation which could also be dangerous for the uplift of the economy.

According to an article published by the University of Science and Technology, Aliero, Birnin Kebbi in June 2023, Nigeria has the potential to generate 12,522 MW of electricity, but can only dispatch 4000 MW, which is insufficient for a population of over 200 million people as of 2022. Therefore, Nigerians use solid fuels including firewood and charcoal as an alternative to insufficient electricity for domestic use. The consumption of firewood and charcoal in Nigeria is estimated at 23,745,458 tons and 4,828,689 tons, respectively in 2021, by far the most consumed domestic solid fuel sources in Nigeria. Although there are domestic solid fuel alternatives, such as dung, agricultural residues and coal, to firewood and wood charcoal, their sustainable adoption has been slow in Nigeria, indicating that there is insufficient knowledge of domestic solid fuel sources.

In Gombe, 99 percent of citizens rely on using firewood to cook their foods according to the state commissioner for Environment, Water and forest resources, Ahmed Saidu Muhammed Fau.

Gombe, like most Northern states, is a semi-arid region with few trees to protect the soil from desertification.

Fau who spoke at the training of 400 artisans, scavengers and selected individuals on climate change, fabrication of efficient stoves and briquettes from farm produce wastes organised by the North East Development Commission NEDC said governments and stakeholders must go beyond rhetorics to engage the communities in advocacy to point out to them the dangers of falling down trees without replacing them.

“I can say that 99 percent of Gombe citizens rely on using firewood or charcoal to cook their foods. Now, there are many ways of producing charcoal from farm bye products like rice shaft, coconut shell, maize husk and others. The government and agencies like NEDC will have to come together and buy these machines and provide them at strategic areas. The moment people know that there is an alternative to falling down trees, I am very sure they will imbibe that culture.

“Although we may not achieve these hundred percent, it will take us somewhere. It’s just like what we did in stopping smoking. Not many people think smoking can be stopped in public places but now it has virtually been achieved. So I believe that with strong commitment and unity of purpose, we will get there,” he said.

He said it is very painful when you drive around and you see the amount of destruction that has been done with regard to the falling of trees but regretted that governments and other stakeholders have not provided an alternative to them.

“The use of firewood is all about the poverty level of the people and that is just it. We can’t expect everybody to use gas or kerosene for cooking because not everyone can afford it. Even if these products are distributed free to the people, would they have money to continue purchasing them? So yes, what has happened in the country in the past and what are happening now have roles to play. This is everybody’s responsibility, it’s not only the governments that have to shoulder it,” he said.

Gombe State with it’s 3.9 million population is one of the highest firewood consuming states in the country even though it is battling with heavy gully erosion sites that have almost consumed major institutions in the state like Gombe State University, GSU and high brow area like the GRA in the state capital.

Beyond the extremely poor purchasing power of the citizen fossil fuel like LPG and kerosene for cooking, the state is also grappling with a huge number of illiterate population who do not know how to use LPG.

Recently, Gombe State University had to ban the use of gas in the school following the burning of a hostel by the students. Similarly, because of the several cases of burn recorded from gas explosion and the high cost of purchasing it, many are also reluctant to switch to the use of gas as an alternative to firewood.

“When the state university banned the use of gas in hostels in the campus, they allow the use of kerosene but this further worsen the situation for already impoverished students community,” said Ahmad, a student of GSU.

He said with the high cost of kerosene, students are forced to completely abstain from cooking beans, the most popular food for students.

“We are limited to cooking only spaghetti, noodles and rice because those ones take lesser minutes to prepare in addition to the fact that it will save us more kerosene,” he said.

Selling of firewood is a booming business in Gombe and it’s not limited to the lower class alone. At highbrow areas like the GRA and Federal Low Cost, firewood are supplied daily to residents for cooking.

“Before, a bunch of firewood cut into ten pieces or less is sold for N60 but now the price has increased to N120,” said Malam Bello Sanni.

Sanni said he has been in the firewood business for more than 35 years and it is what he depends on to feed his two wives and twelve children.

He said he got up to five trucks of firewood every week and are not even enough to meet the demands.

When asked about planting trees to replace those cut for firewood, Sanni said he knew nothing about that as he was not the one cutting the trees from the forest.

Mohammed Segiru, the chairman of firewood traders said he has been in the business for 30 years.

According to him, another bunch of firewood bigger than the smaller one used to be sold for N100 before but it has gone up to N300 now.

He said people in Gombe prefer using firewood to cook than kerosene because kerosene is now expensive and not even available. Segiru added that the quantity of firewood consumed by a household depend on the size of the household.

According to him, ebony and neem trees are in high demand because they burn fast like gas.

For a state facing the challenge of deforestation, firewood is increasingly becoming scarce in Gombe and the traders have to go as far as Bauchi state to get the firewood.

“We go as far as Bajoga, Dukku or Bara in Bauchi state to get all these firewoods,” he said.

On the other hand, Muhammed Adamu said he could not use firewood to cook in his house because his wife is asthmatic.

“I use charcoal because my wife is asthmatic and cannot use firewood . If we even use small firewood, she will run into crisis and end up in hospital. Before we used to buy a bag of charcoal N650 or N700 but now the price has risen up to N5000. Now is I buy the N100 one it cannot cook more than just two times. My wife cannot use gas because she comes from the village and does not know how to use it. There was a time our neighbor’s house was set ablaze by someone using gas. A lot of our people here are illiterates and so using gas may be very difficult and the fear of using gas is another thing,” he said.

He said the rates at which prices of food items and other commodities are rising has further worsen the poverty level in Gombe.

Adamu Bulus, a civil servant in the state lamented that that as a graduate he receives only N38,000 per month.

“And that was because of the N10,000 increased across board for all civil servants, before my take home pay was just N28, 000.”

According to him, the poor remuneration of civil servants in the state is not helping the matter at all.

“That is why even people like us who knows better have no choice than to use firewood or charcoal instead of gas. Also, if you don’t know how to farm, there is no way you can sustain decent life here in Gombe with just N38,000 salary,” said Bulus.

Madam Sofia Maina, a food vendor at Station said she cannot use kerosene or gas because they are too expensive for her.

“How much am I making a day?” She asked. “If I have to use any of the two then I will make no profit at all.”

Although the state government embarked on a 3G afforestation project aimed at planting trees across the state, the rates at which men are falling trees everyday is obviously counter productive to such projects.

Already, the Kanawa forest reserve in Kwadon near Gombe is a victim of the indiscriminate falling of trees for firewood. The forest well known for its mangrove trees in a subsaharan climate is fast disappearing sure to the uncontrol and negligence on the part of the authority in charge.

Similarly, dry season farmers have also taken over the reserve, sharing the farmland and falling the trees to pave way for sunlight on their farms.

  • FG drives wealth, job creation with research commercialisation

FG drives wealth, job creation with research commercialisation

The federal government quest to create wealth and make jobs available to all has received a major boost.

This became self-evident last week with the flurry of activities at the nation’s foremost Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi [FIIRO] as the Institute’s management led the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) on a tour of its facility.

The Minister of IST, Chief Geoffrey Nnaji, who was on his first official visit to FIIRO, could not hide his surprise and elation at the vast opportunities and finished research works which he said if harnessed by business men, and commercialised will fetch Nigeria huge amounts of money.

The extensive tour took the Ministerial entourage through the FIIRO cassava pilot plant, the Institute’s pavilion which houses the proto type equipment, the imposing engineering building, the FIIRO Dome, where the Institute showcases all their products which have been concluded and ready for commercialisation. The tour ended with visits to the various laboratories.

Addressing the Media, the Director General FIIRO, Dr. Jummai Tutuwa said innovation and technology hold sway in issues of national development. She noted that the institute has been at the forefront of boosting innovative research on all the available raw materials in Nigeria, both agro-based and mineral excluding oil, which has yielded positive solutions.

Dr. Tutuwa said that the Institute has developed over 250 research and development technologies and has completely packaged over 100 of them ready for immediate transfer.

The amiable DG of FIIRO, disclosed that the food, beverage, pulp, paper, textile, cement, paint, soap and cosmetics as well as the engineering industry amongst others have benefitted immensely from the Institute’s research and development results.

“The Institute is spurring economic development through job creation and technology transfer and has trained over 500,000 techno-entrepreneurs on its various developed technologies”, said Tutuwa.

According to her, numerous entrepreneurs have established production enterprises based on the technologies acquired from the Institute, adding that millions of jobs have been created through direct and multiplier effects of these entrepreneurs.

Emphasizing on what he said before, the Minister Science and Technology said “We must produce, we must get people employed. We must commercialise the research we have. There are so many of these research products we have on the shelf that have not been touched. If Nigeria can concentrate on bringing out these research products, then Nigeria will change overnight”.

“I keep saying that to move this country forward we need innovation, science and technology. We are the focus of economic development, there are no two ways about it and that is why I keep praying that more money be allocated to places like FIIRO so that those researches can see the light of the day.”

Speaking about the FIIRO cassava pilot plant, he noted that with cassava alone that we can make fortunes in this country. “We have quality cassava machines here. Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava in the whole world. We produce 64 million metric tons per annum. With the strength we have now, H419, we will multiply it to 120 million metric tons and make a lot of money.

“From cassava, we can have feed for poultry, cows using cassava peels, then you can get on to getting starch, sorbitol, flour etcetera. We have to stop importing and look inwards,” he said.

Commending the DG FIIRO, the Minister described her as capable hands and said he has been discussing with her and that “part of our focus going forward will be to start doing pilot planting so that we have as many cassava, as many plants as possible so we can use the leaves, stem to make papers.”

“We are also using this opportunity to appeal to investors that go outside Nigeria to import machines, to look inwards as we have better, solid and durable machines that can last very long in FIIRO. We are inviting investors to come here and see what we have so as to commercialize most of these things,” appealed the Minister.

  • Are customer reviews good or bad for business?

Are customer reviews good or bad for business?

This write-up was prompted by the current brouhaha occasioned in the social media between the supporters of Mrs. Chioma Okolie and those of Chief Eric Umeofia of Erisco Foods.

It would be recalled that Mrs. Okolie had given a negative review of Nagiko tomato paste and since then there has been a war between the reviewer and the manufacturer.

This report therefore hopes to show that even the occasional negative reviews can be transformed into a golden opportunity for growth. A well-handled negative review can showcase your commitment to customer satisfaction and highlight your ability to turn frowns upside down.

In a world where everyone seems to have an opinion (and a smartphone to share it), customer reviews have become the glittering gems of the small business realm. These tiny nuggets of wisdom hold the power to make or break a business faster than you can say, “Is there a manager I can speak to?”

Nearly 95% of consumers read online reviews before making a purchase. Reviews have transcended their humble beginnings as mere star ratings to become the lifeblood of small businesses everywhere, breathing life into their reputations, fostering customer trust, and propelling growth. They serve as the digital high-fives from satisfied customers, holding such sway over our decision-making that they could probably convince us to buy snowshoes in the middle of the Sahara.

Why are customer reviews so important?

They build trust and credibility. Trust and credibility are the dynamic duo that can make or break a small business. In the tumultuous realm of business-customer relationships, trust reigns supreme. Picture this: a potential customer stumbles upon a small business website, hesitating on whether the site is legitimate. Customer reviews can reassure a hesitant buyer that this business is the real deal. These testimonials fight off skepticism and doubts with their authenticity.

How can you encourage your customers to leave reviews? The best way is to simply ask. You can also offer incentives to customers who leave a review (positive or negative), like a chance to enter a monthly giveaway. And don’t forget to thank them.

  • ADVAN seeks stakeholders’ intervention over ARCON’s arbitrary policies

ADVAN seeks stakeholders’ intervention over ARCON’s arbitrary policies

The Advertisers Association of Nigeria [ADVAN] has called upon the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria [ARCON] to pull the reins on its regime of arbitrary policy initiatives and embark on critical stakeholder dialogue and engagement to foster renewed hope and support for the industry.

In a statement issued by the executive council members, ADVAN pointed out a lot of loopholes in the 2022 (ARCON) law and asserted that the new law has several provisions that are clearly unconstitutional.

For ADVAN, a major item that has stood out is that ARCON, according to the law, is allowed to set up a tribunal that would hold ‘trials’ for any persons or organisations that contravene the provisions of the ARCON law.

According to the Press statement, ADVAN said that this provision is an “extremely concerning development, because Nigeria as a democratic entity has clear separation of powers between the different arms of government.

“A regulatory body for advertising cannot set up a tribunal with powers to hear, try, deliver judgment and sentence, as such is clearly a violation of the constitution of the nation.”

Continuing ADVAN noted that “ARCON cannot constitutionally act as both the prosecutor and the judge in relation to matters which they have by themselves, labelled as advertising offences”.

It said the tribunal constituted by ARCON is merely an appendage of ARCON and it is propagating the agenda of ARCON.

The body recalled that in January 2024, ARCON issued notices to law abiding organizations in Nigeria on various unclear charges of infractions, with fines up to N1 million per infraction. “It is critical to note that these organisations include multinationals, Indigenous conglomerates and various levels of businesses that serve as the backbone of the Nigerian economy. ARCON has now issued notices to the CEOs of these organisations to face the ARCON ‘Tribunal’ on various claims of infractions.

Read Also: Speaker Abbas, Deputy mourn Olubadan

The body said it vehemently opposes the harassment of its members (which are corporate entities that utilize advertising and marketing to promote their goods and services).

It said the harassment and threats of criminal trials of CEOs of both local and multi-nationals is antithetical to the reforms being proposed by the Federal Government through the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council on Ease of Doing Business (PEBEC), and the need to remove all forms of bottlenecks in driving the Nigerian economy.

ARCON has severally insisted that its reforms are targeted at enthroning transparency, equitable practices and growth of the Nigerian advertising industry. For the tribunal, the government declares that it is an independent specialized judicial body established to ensure equity and openness in all disputes allegedly committed under the Act.

ADVAN also denied that it made contributions to the Advertising Industry Standard of Practice (AISOP) midwifed by the then Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), now ARCON.

According to ADVAN, “It is worthy to note that while the leadership of APCON, now ARCON claimed that it invited all critical stakeholders to deliberate on the AISOP: “The truth is that ADVAN has clearly stated on several occasions, both in private with the Registrar of APCON Dr Lekan Fadolapo and in many public fora, that not a single contribution presented by ADVAN was included in the AISOP.”

  • His Word and Your World!

    His Word and Your World!

    • Text:  Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou? Ecclesiastes 8:4

Words spoken are very potent in the determination of the course of human lives, families or nations, either towards the positive or the negative ends. (James 3:5,6). When words are uttered, they have the capacity to become altars in the world space. In the face of the confessed Word of God however, the hitherto established altars of human words are altered, and the world is made a best place. The world of the Shunamite woman was turned upside down when she lost her son but her weeping was turned into joy because she trusted the Word of God that it shall be well, and it was well eventually, as the boy came back to life (2 Kings 4:18-31). I therefore declare by reason of divine commissioning that God will fully restore all that are yours to your rightful state and positions in the name of Jesus Christ. Please remember that, words can build a nation and also has the capacity to destroy a land.

Are you experiencing discomfiting issues in your world through your words? Aren’t things adding up for you as desired? Are you grossly discontent with happenings around the country, with regards to the economy and/or security and you have joined the faithless in our space? Are you finding it challenging to make ends meet at such a time in the country, and considering the option of eloping from Nigeria called “ja pa”? I have good news for you dear beloved brothers and sisters, through the grace of the positive confessions of the Word of God, your world and our corporate world shall be a better place. The economic situation of Nigeria shall be revived and the present insecurity, more pronounced in the North today, shall be a thing of the past. Nigeria shall rise again in the name of Jesus Christ.

The substance of the power of words is largely a function of who spoke what. King Solomon, a man who knew lots about power of words and authority, a man who by his word gave several legislations in Israel as king and no person had the power to contradict or contravene it, declared from our text that the word of the king is power. He also said that wherever the word of the king gets to, his power is effectual there hence he asked rhetorically that: who can question the word of the king?

It is very important to note that you have a King who is the king of kings. I mean, a king with global jurisdiction. The king who takes the prostrate of other kings. The king who with His word overrules the pronouncements and decrees of earthly kings. Lamentations 3:37 says that, “Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, when the Lord has not commanded it?” The Almighty God is the King who can kill and make alive. He can bring down and He can raise up. He can make poor and make rich. He can raise the poor and needy from the dust to sit with nobles and inherit a seat of honor and glory (1 Samuel 2:6-8). When this King speaks, the mountains move; when He raises up His voice, valleys are lifted and when He orders, rough places are made straight. His words are law. He said in Psalms 50:10-12 that, “every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.”

To enable you get the benefits of His word, the King of kings said in Joshua 1:8 that, “This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written inside it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shalt have good success.” Beloved, a wordless Christian is a deprived Christian who is tossed about by the wars of this world. A wordless Christian is an unknowledgeable Christian, unfortunate and challenged.

What you need to do that will make you to tower above evil words, free you from the challenges of this world, make you live a prosperous life and provide the platform for you to enjoy the promised Full restoration of the Year 2024, is to ensure that His Words are always in your mouth and confess daily only what is written and not what you are seeing. You must meditate in the word of God daily and do all His biddings. Please come to Jesus at this time of Lent, accept Him as your Lord and Saviour, have faith in His capacity to turn things around for you and allow the Holy Spirit to have His way in your life and situation. As the Lord lives, you shall tower above evil words, be above the demonic wars of this world and you shall testify to God’s goodness and faithfulness in the name of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, help me by the power of your Word and restore us fully, in the name of Jesus Christ

  • It is His mercy and not your merit

It is His mercy and not your merit

    • By: Henry O. Adelegan
    • Text:”…..Nebuchadnezzar……was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen…….” (Daniel 4:33)

Whatever you are in the public space, whosoever you are in the polity, wherever you are in the sphere of decision making, your parental upbringing, your beauty, brilliance, talents or abilities, all that you have acquired in life and the position you are occupying in the family, place of work, church or nation are all products of God’s grace, and not predicated on your works (Ephesians 2:8-9; cf 1 Corinthians 4:7). All that you are flaunting which are giving you a false sense of importance are through His mercy and not your merit. The only character that can sustain His mercy on you, keep you standing and never allow you go down in relevance, influence and power soon is humility. Jesus Christ was an example of humility. Despite being God, He humbled Himself to the gruesome end on the Cross of Calvary. On the third day, God raised Him from the dead and rewarded Him with a name that is above every other names and that at the mention of His name every knee shall surrender (Phil. 2:6-11). It is based on this backdrop that Paul the Apostle admonished in Philippians 2:5 of the indispensability of having the same mind of humility like Jesus Christ – all are from mercy, and not merit.

It is people who are either ignorant of the doctrine of times and seasons (Ecclesiastes 9:11) or that are a product of questionable parental upbringing who feel that they are above board and are consequently haughty, uncontrollable, unapproachable and wicked when they attain positions of authority. Perhaps it is important to remind such people that power is transient. Someone was where you are yesterday. You are there today and another person is waiting by the door to take over all of you from you. You are a product of His mercy and not absolutely based on your merit. The source of mercy has the final say. He said to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion. So then, it is not of him who wills, not of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy”.(Romans 9:15,16)

The truth of the matter is that God is the only Eternal Father and He is the Ancient of days (Daniel 7:9,13,22).  He said that, “By me, kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth” (Proverbs 8:15-16; cf 1Samuel 2:6-8).  He is the Almighty God (Gen. 17:1), He has all powers at His command (Psalm 62:11) and gives it to whosoever He wills (Romans 13:1). More importantly, He has power to install whosoever He wills as king; and, at His perogative, He can remove installed kings. When the Israelites demanded for a king, He was the One who gave them Saul the son of Kish, but when Saul went against His command, He didn’t look at Samuel’s penitent outlook and repentant heart to give Saul another chance; He removed and replaced him in a jiffy (1Samuel 15). He is the Brightness of God’s glory, the Buckler to the upright, the Captain of our salvation, the Breastplate of our righteousness, the Chief Cornerstone and the Jehohah Elohim.

King Nebuchadnezzar was a very powerful King over Babylon, a king who had God’s delegated powers and authorities “… over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant” (Jeremiah 1:10). One day, King Nebuchadnezzar became so self-conceited about all that God had blessed his life with and appropriated all the blessings to himself – he became so garrulous and egocentric like lots of leaders in our official spaces (Daniel 4:29-31). “…….But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him” (Daniel 5:19-29) King Nebuchadnezzar was chased out of the palace like an animal because of pride but when his sense was restored, he begged God for forgiveness and was restored after many years in the forest as an animal (Daniel 4:34-37). It is His mercy and not your merit!

Brethren, humility is one of the hallmarks of Christianity. If you don’t want the hand of God to be against you, take stock of areas where you have been exhibiting pride, appreciate God for bringing you this and thus far, ask Him to forgive your sins, put off the garb of pride, ascribe all the glory and honor to whom it is due (God Almighty). Remember that you are a product of His mercy. Pride leads to shame (Proverbs 11:2), brings quarrels (Proverbs 13:-10), leads to destruction (Proverbs 16:18) and brings down from the lofty height like King Nebuchadnezzar (Proverbs 29:23). It shall continue to be well with you in the name of Jesus.

Prayers: Father, deliver me Your object of mercy from pride and clothe me with the garment of humility all the days of my life, in Jesus’ name.

  • Triumph over the storms of life

Triumph over the storms of life

Text:”…. he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side….. And there arose a great storm of wind….” ( Mk. 4:35,37)

A storm is a dangerous wave that has devastating tendencies; while there are natural storms, we also have spiritual storms. When a natural storm occurs, it comes with severe collateral damages such as displacement of organised settings and structures, disorganized structures and distortion of set orders (Job 27:21). To reduce the destructive consequences of a natural storm, captains of ships are always advised to avoid stormy locations. Where a natural storm cannot be avoided and it occurs however, the passengers are commanded not to loiter in the ship, luggages are properly organised in their compartments, breakable utensils are securely kept out of the reach of passengers and  cargoes are jettisoned to lighten the weight of the vessel, among other safety measures.

While the effect of a physical storm can be sighted and ameliorated, a spiritual storm is however not visible to human eyes and it is much more destructive. A spiritual storm evolves suddenly like the experience of the woman with the issue of blood, the unanticipated affliction of the great Naaman with leprosy and the shocking death of the only child of the Shunamite woman from a seemingly ordinary headache (Mk. 5:25-26; 2Kings 5:1-14; 2 Kings 4:18-20). Besides that, it is worthy of note that a spiritual storm can emerge from an ordinary misunderstanding among couples leading to separation or divorce and can manifest in sudden unexplainable behavioral change. A spiritual storm is visible when a thriving business venture on spur of moment begins to go down; it is observable in perennial visits to Doctors for changing ailments, it is noticeable in unexplainable loss of revenue, seeable in increasing expenditure without commensurate increase in income, obvious in inability to meet up with matrimonial and occupational demands, remarkable when friends are suddenly turned to enemies and observable when there is unjustifiable dislike or hatred by superior officers etc.

From our text, Jesus Christ informed His disciples about a journey to the other side, a journey from one location to another which was basically targeted at freeing a great Evangelist who was destined for greatness but tied down and bound by powers of darkness (Mk. 5:1-20). On their way to the other side, a great storm arose with the intention to hinder them. The fretful disciples drew the attention of the Ancient of Days to the raging storm and with a word, He rebuked the wind and the raging storm stopped. Eventually, Jesus Christ arrived safely at the destination and the great man who was bound was released from the captivity of the wicked and he became a great Evangelist in Decapolis. I therefore pray that the power of God shall frustrate the threat of storms around you, shall suspend laws of nature for your sake and His power shall take you from where you are to where you are supposed to be in the name of Jesus.

Brethren, kindly be informed that with Jesus Christ in the boat of your life does not exclude you from a spiritual storm. This is suffice to say that being a born again Christian, a church worker or a Pastor does not shut you out from the challenges of a storm (Psalm 34:19; John 16:33). It is nevertheless pertinent to note that it doesn’t matter what your experiences are today, you are not hopeless, because there is a God who specialises at making ‘the storm calm, so that the waves thereof are still’ (Psalm 107:29). He is the One that is “a refuge from the storm” (Isaiah 25:4) and He is the One that “sits upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22). He is your God and He will never allow you to be put to shame. I have good news for you my dear brothers and sisters, the present storm that you are wading through has a terminal date with Jesus Christ. There is no storm that can stop you. Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. This is your morning of joy. This is your morning of new beginnings. As the storm came to you through one way, it shall surely disappear through another way. As the Lord lives, you shall surely get to your Promised Land.

I therefore encourage you at this time of Lent, to build your life on the Rock (Matthew 7:24 cf Romans 9:33), allow Jesus Christ into the boat of your life, surrender your life to Him, confess your sins and ask Him to forgive you, ask Him to come into your life and take full charge, make a commitment to live for Him henceforth, call on Him at all times, obey Him in all things and have faith in His power to deliver. As the Lord lives, the storms within and around you shall be silenced and you shall get to your other side of greatness and testimonies in the name of Jesus..

Prayer: Almighty God come into the boat of my life, calm every storm, take me to the other side of my life, terminate my weepings and restore the joy of my salvation, in Jesus’ name.

  • Mothers, arise!

    Mothers, arise!

Text: “Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons …… said, Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom”. (Matthew 20:20, 21)

Every nation is a product of her motherhood. The resultant effect of mothers, when they are devoid of knowledge of their divine responsibilities, is that, the national space will be fraught with louts, thugs, hooligans, bad leaders in positions of authority and with the citizenry groping in the dark without knowledge of right life direction. Any society that is filled with badly behaved, rotten, ill-mannered, haughty, uncontrollable and indisciplined citizenry is an obvious failure of motherhood. Mothers, arise to your divine responsibilities! The passage of our text brings it to the fore the life of a mother who had knowledge of her divine responsibilities, a mother who latched unto her duties as a mother and was duly compensated by God. One day, the woman, Salome, wife of Zebedee, and mother of James and John, brought her two sons to Jesus Christ and made a request of Him to position them on his left and right sides in His kingdom. When the ten other disciples, children of mothers that were not alive to their spiritual responsibilities, mothers that were never heard of or seen all through the time their children were with Jesus Christ, knew what happened, they were upset with the two disciples.

Beloved mother, are you alive to your responsibility as a mother like Salome? What type of mother are you? Are you a baby who is rearing indisciplined and ill-mannered children? What type of wife are you? Are you proud in your relationship with your husband, and consequently disobeying God? Mothers, arise! Where are the Ruths in the church? Where  are the women who are loving, respectful and caring to their mothers in law? Where are the mothers that will say to their mother-in -law like Ruth “Incline me not to leave you. Where you go, I will go. Your people shall be my people and your God shall be my God”? (Ruth 1:16,17). Where are the “Jochebeds”, mothers who will sacrifice all to preserve the lives of their children, do everything to assist them fulfill divine purpose and free her family from the captivity of Egypt? (Exodus 1,2). Where are the sacrificial mothers like Esther that will be selfless and at the risk of their own lives would say to the family “I will go and meet the King, If I perish I perish”? (Esther 4:16). Where are the selfless mothers like Dorcas, the Shunamite women and the widow of Zarephath?

As mothers, you have divine responsibilities. God expects you to live lives that are worthy of emulation by people under your watch and care (1 Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:3,4). God wants you to be examples in humility, righteousness and right living. Abraham Lincoln said, “I remember my mother’s prayer and they have always helped me”. You are expected to provide leadership in the home and be models in Godly living, and not only as fashion models. You are duty-bound to match your words with your walk. You are to be very deliberate trainers (Proverbs 22:6) and lead your household to take responsibilities. You must guide your children to be able to stand alone in life and avoid absolute delegation of the care of your household to house helps and drivers. Give space for your children to know how to wash cars, cook and do their laundry. You must also be involved with their lives, know the type of films they watch and the online sites they patronize. It is important for you to know and befriend their friends, because association determines destination. You must teach them about the temporality of this world and let them know about eternity, morals, humility, kindness, holiness, diligence, respect to elders, faith, patience, time consciousness and management, service to God, philanthropic works (Proverbs 19:17) etc.

Kindly be informed that a mother who will be appreciated at the integrative stage of her life must be disliked by the children at the formative and normative stages of their lives. Like Salome, you must be sacrificial and be willing to give your comfort, time, talents and treasure for your household. You must also be disciplinarians (Proverbs 22:15, 23:13) and set family laws and boundaries (Proverbs 1:8, 6:20). You are obligated to be a woman of prayers. You must be discretional with trust (Jeremiah 17:5,6) and view of the fact that we are in that perilous time (2 Timothy 3:1-4), you must be watchful of that uncle, aunty, sister or brother, driver, house help, pastor, evangelist and deliverance minister you entrust your children to.

In conclusion, all husbands and children are duty bound to reciprocate the sacrifices of mothers and take care of them, honor and let them how much you appreciate them. Don’t wait till their passage before you write nicely worded tributes about them and commence renovation work on their buildings. Please indulge the mothers in your life with befitting lives and not befitting burials, celebrate them when they are alive, buy them cars, build houses for them, purchase good clothes for them and place them on monthly allowances. As you do all these, God will prosper your ways and grant you long life, and Nigeria shall be a better place for us all in the name of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, give us hearts to do your biddings as mothers, children and parents in the name of Jesus Christ
