Indigenous movies excite consumers more, says Nollywood Director Owu

It was excitement, glamour as people from different walks of life gathered recently in Lekki, Lagos to watch the screening of the epic film ‘Asiri Ade’ by Nigeria Nollywood’s esteemed director, Adeoluwa Owu.

‘Asiri Ade’ unfolds a compelling narrative of politics, love, and intrigue, as two kingdoms consider a royal union for different motives. With elements of hidden romance, a lurking killer, and a power struggle, the film encompasses a blend of epic, romance, and thriller genres. The production quality, authentic storytelling, impeccable character delivery, and masterful post-production underscore Adeoluwa Owu’s genius extraordinary filmmaking skills.

Acknowledging the challenges and excitement that marked the filmmaking journey, Owu said “The outcome is a film that promises an unforgettable and immersive experience for audiences. “Asiri Ade” is not just a film; it’s an artistic endeavor that showcases the creativity, dedication, and passion of all involved”.

Speaking about consumers attitude to indigenous films, he said that he is excited that Nigerians are  clamoring for and embracing  indigenous stories  in recent times as against the past where such stories were not appreciated.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, he said ‘’I am excited that Nigerians are beginning to troop out and clamour for stories that are indigenous and personal to us; case study is “Jagun Jagun”; ‘’Anilulapo’’, and now,  ‘’Asiri Ade’’.

‘’I am excited that these have opened up and it is no longer a thing in the past where people will be like, ‘Nigerian film, I am not interested’; it is now, ‘Nigerian film, oh, what do they have to offer’.

Mojisola Sapara, Director of Content Acquisition & Distribution at Papaya Studios, emphasized the studio’s mission to bring fresh and diverse stories to the screen. Through

collaborations with top talents and fostering creative innovation, Papaya Studios aims to shape the future of entertainment in Africa.

‘’That is what the narrative is right now and it is just beautiful to watch this change and the switch, ‘’ he said.

The director, who is also the supervising producer for Asiri Ade, said the movie was an epic story of love and mystery, saying ‘’It tells a story of love interest and a conflict within families and royalties.’’

‘’I am super excited that the world can get to see it because it is an epic story; however, it required that we looked for a location that could depict the time and era.

‘’So, the film is set back in 1885 in old Oyo, Nigeria, where kings and royal families were still at the helm of affairs of society.

‘’We had to do a big construction, production design,  built an entire village, just to be able to be able to match what we were trying tell.

‘’So the biggest scale of it was getting the aesthetics to look right and getting the right actors to play the part; and being a Yoruba film, it was also essential that we got actors that could fluently deliver in expressions and Yoruba dialect properly.

‘’Those were the initial challenges apart from the basic film making challenges, but we were able to surmount every situation, especially as this was done with Papaya studios, ‘’ Owu said.

One of the cast in the movie, Mike Afolarin, described the movies as a wonderful story, serving as a reminder that every action had repercussions at some point.

‘’Therefore, we should just be mindful of our doings and dealings because like one thing you do today, can come back to bite you at any time.

‘’So, I think that is the core message from this movie and it was such a great opportunity for me to play a Yoruba character; I love challenges and took it up, hoping to see how it comes out, ‘’ Afolarin said.

Another cast in the movie, Bolanle Ninolowo, who commended the industry, said, however, the major challenge in the industry include poor remuneration for actors and crew members.

The epic film boasts a stellar cast, including renowned actors Gabriel Afolayan, Bolaji Ogunmola, Omowunmi Dada, Fathia Williams, and other exceptional talents.

  • Soaring prices, FCCPC’s tardiness make Price Control Board inevitable

Soaring prices, FCCPC’s tardiness make Price Control Board inevitable

There is a tweet that I came across last week: it says that if you want to pay for something and the seller’s phone rings that you should quickly make payment before the seller picks the call because if he\she picks the call before payment is made that the price of the goods will automatically go higher because the caller will tell the seller of the latest price increment. That is the sad reality in Nigeria now.

Sharing his experience, Mr. Kenneth Bode recently contracted a furniture maker to do some work for him. They agreed on a price and he immediately advanced him some money. He was supposed to pick the work after one week. Three days later, the furniture maker called him to say that he had gone to market to purchase wood and other materials for the furniture only to find out that prices had gone up.

He told Mr. Bode pointblank that he was ready to refund him if there was not an upward review of the previous price they agreed on. Exasperated Mr. Bode had to add almost up to 30% of the price that they previously agreed.

Like Bode, Mrs. Obiamaka Nwoye laso suffered the same fate. She bought a 50kg bag of foreign short grain rice from her customer of many years in November 2023 at N41,000. According to her, the long imported rice grain was selling for N51,000. However, a few weeks after that, she kept hearing from different people that the price of rice was going up every day. On the 5th of this month, she called the same rice seller and she told her that foreign short grain was selling for N60,000 while the long grain was selling for N64,000. Two days later she called the same rice seller and she told her that short grain was now selling for N69,000 while the long grain goes for N74,000.

Also, Mrs. Funke Adeyo said she bought a D’erica cup of beans for N700 early last week. The next day she gave her daughter N700 to buy the same beans from the same shop but her daughter came back without the beans because the price had gone up to N750. By the next day again the same beans from the same shop had gone up to N800. The same thing applies to all products.

A bag of cement that was selling for N5,200 sold at N7,500 last weekend. By the time you are reading this, the price would have jumped up going by the way prices are jumping up in Nigeria.

Most supermarkets no longer put prices on the shelves because prices change almost every day. Emeka Orji who went to Shop Smart Supermarket in the Island said he was so frustrated because you will have to take every product to the checkout counter before you can know the price of what you are buying.

“It is only when the cashier scans the barcode that you can see the price, making shopping very difficult.”

In a recent press release from the government regulatory agency Federal Competition Consumer Protection Agency, FCCPC admitted that participants in the food chain play a major role in the arbitrarily increase in prices of goods.

“The Commissions surveillance efforts suggest participants in the food chain and distribution sector including at the retail level are engaging in conspiracy, price gouging, hoarding and other unfair tactics/strategies to restrict the supply of food, manipulate and inflate the price of food in an indiscriminate manner, this conduct violets both moral and legal codes. Taking advantage of consumer anxiety and vulnerability to inflate prices, and restrict or distort competition is obnoxious, unscrupulous, exploitative and illegal.”

In the view of analysts, the Nigerian market is free and mostly unregulated thus sellers and producers of consumers goods are allowed to peg their prices wherever tickles them and wherever satisfies their greedy urge, they are only forced to readjust the price by competitors or by other market factors and never by the Nigeria government, unlike other countries where the government mandates services providers and sellers on the price range they are to peg for a product or service.

In choice cities like Abuja, Lagos or Port Harcourt, landlords and house owners charge arbitrarily for rent on houses with the perception that if a particular tenant cannot afford to pay the rent, there are other tenants who are willing to pay whatever rent that is fixed on the house.

Transport companies as well do raise their fare arbitrarily, without any control or regulations.

Thankfully, the Price Control Board, an agency under the Federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have the primary statutory duties of these agencies are to protect consumers, make sure they are not being cheated or ripped off by producers and service providers and fix prices for some popular basic consumer goods, but these agencies, sadly are not just doing enough.

It is so bad that most Nigerians do not even know that there are government agencies that have been charged to control prices and are also charged to prosecute service providers who charge exorbitant prices. They need to be more proactive now than before because producers and service providers due to the economic hardship and high cost of raw materials are shifting all the burdens, including tax to the final consumers.

Good enough, Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC noted in statement that in rare situations and pursuant to part X1, and section 88 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, [FCCPA], that the Commission may advice the President fix the prices of certain goods and services based on empirical evidence.

    Words uttered are altars (3)

Text: “….As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you” – Numbers 14:28

    • Henry O. Adelegan

From the preceding messages, it was brought to the fore that following the grumbling of the Israelites, God told Moses and Aaron that what the people grumbled about must be their possession. Consequently, God cursed them and said that, anyone who is above 20years of age will die in the wilderness and their young ones will embark on a journey of 40days for 40years. The Israelites were rewarded according to their confession. It was further highlighted that when we are in agreement with God, according His words, such confessions shall come to effortless manifestation because God puts His word above His name (Psalm 138:2) and even if heaven and earth pass away, His words shall stand forever (Matthew 24:35).

Not only that, God has promised that as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is the word that goes out from His mouth, it will never return to Him empty but shall accomplish what He desired and shall achieve the purpose for which He sent it (Isaiah 55:10,11).

Please be reminded dear brothers and sisters that, things don’t just happen until they are commanded to happen by the Word of God. When you utter the written word, God makes your voice irresistible to the elements of the world. Changes only occur where and when they are commanded to occur in the place of prayers and complimented with action. You must therefore close your eyes and ears to whatever you are facing or happening around you now. Whenever what you are seeing is in conflict with what is written, opt for what is written, and what is written shall be your possession. The written words that are confessed in faith move every human, physical, matrimonial, occupational, economical and spiritual mountains, because the moment you open your mouth wide confessing His written words and become a loud faith talker, God will fill your mouths with loud and awesome testimonies (Mark 11:23; cf Proverbs 18:23) – words uttered are altars!

Lastly, the confessed word moves God to action. Jesus Christ said in John 14:10b that, …. ‘The words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works..” Jesus Christ said that I confess but it is God that does the work for me to possess. This means that whenever you speak in faith, it is not for you to know how it will manifest because the Almighty God will go ahead to perform His duty of perfecting what had been spoken.

Beloved in Christ, to enable you get maximum benefits from the positive words uttered during this season of Lent, you must confess your sins to Him and plead for forgiveness, ask Jesus Christ to be the Lord of your life from today, get acquainted with His declared words through association with a place of worship where sound word of God is preached, read your Bible regularly and ensure that the words read and preached reflect positively in your life and living.

Consequently, you must begin to confess what He said in His words and not what you are seeing, particularly concerning Nigeria. You must never limit yourself in the place of divine blessings because you are at liberty to declare your expectations by … ‘calling those things which be not as though they were.’ ( Romans 4:17). Please remember that WHATEVER IS TOO BIG FOR YOUR MOUTHS TO SAY, WILL BE TOO BIG FOR YOUR EYES TO SEE. As the Lord lives, your uttered positive words shall be your eternal altars in the name of Jesus Christ..

Prayer: Lord, guide the words of my mouth in line with your will and let the word confessed profit in my life life in Jesus’ name.

  • Words uttered are altars (1)

    Words uttered are altars (1)

    • Henry O. Adelegan

Spoken words are very powerful in the life and destiny of any person, family, organisation or nation. The words uttered, to the ordinary minds, are ordinary; but to the spiritually minded, words altered are altars – they are altars with capacity to make or mar lives and destinies. Spoken words gain entry into human lives and destinies in a very subtle manner and leave either a positive or negative impact. No wonder the writer of Proverbs in Proverbs 6:2 said that, “You have been trapped by what you said and ensnared by the words of your mouth”.

From our text, the people of Israel following the frightening words of the faithless spies raised their voices against Moses and Aaron, and they rebelled against God. They forgot all the miracles the Lord had done for them; the Israelites despised His mercies and spurned His might. In their ingratitude, they preferred death. Their murmur and vile words against God got Him angry, hence He decreed that their confessions must be their possessions. God told Moses that, as the Israelites have spoken vile words to Him so shall he do to them ( Numbers 14:29-37) – the words they uttered became their altars.

Beloved in Christ, while studying the Word of God is a key to public manifestation, validity is given to the Word read through obedience to what He says. It is however important to note that the process is incomplete when the Word read and lived are not confessed. Your confession is your possession! ( cf 2 Corinthians 4:18). A man of God said that “Every closed mouth is surely a gateway to a closed destiny. He that had shut his mouth has shut the pathway to his destiny”, because confessions leads to possessions. In 2 Kings 4:8-end, the Shunamite woman carried a dead son on her back and was rushing out of the house. When her husband saw her and asked if all was well, she operated in faith and said that all shall be well. Eventually, the dead son came alive and the words she uttered became her altar.

Dear brothers and sisters, it is pertinent for you to confess what you are seeing in the Word and not what you are seeing in the world, particularly at such a time when Nigeria is not exempted from the trending adverse global issues. It is mighty words, the unseen, that provoke mighty works that are seen. To be mighty in results, you must be mighty in words. Everybody’s world is a product of his words. God gave Himself unto us as an example of speaking what He desired into creation. In Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26 & 29, God spoke and in verse 31, He saw all that He spoke. Beloved, what you say is what you will see. It is what you say that sets the pace for what you see. You are a product of your words. When you speak what God says, His report shall overrule the reports of the professionals. Beloved, you are not supposed to wish or wait for a change, you are to speak change into being. Don’t look at what is happening around you, you must operate like the Shunamite woman, speak what the Word of God is saying. Don’t forget that things will follow a natural cause of action unless there is a declaration for it to be otherwise.

The Doctors might have told the woman with the issue of blood in Mk 5:25-34 that it had ended with her having tried for 12years  but she refused their report. The day she saw Jesus Christ, she said I believe that if I can touch the hem of His garment, I shall be made whole. Her confession paid off. She struggled through the crowd, she endured the beatings, she enjoyed the caustic rebukes, she didn’t complain about the shoving around and the pushing front and backwards of the multitude until she got to Jesus Christ, touched Him and the challenges of 12 years ended, even without a single prayer from Jesus – her uttered words became her altar!

The word of God is the highest level of words. God is the most high God, His word is the most high word. When a man chooses to speak the word of God or the words that are in agreement with the word of God, that man is operating in the highest level of language and power available to man. He is speaking from a frequency that is far above the devil, his demons and the problems they cause on the earth because everything in the universe were created by the spoken word of God and they all respond to the spoken words. It shall continue to be well with you and all that are yours this season of Lent and thereafter in the name of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, please guide the words of my mouth and let my confessed words facilitate my full restoration in the name of Jesus.

  • Consider your ways!

    Consider your ways!

    • Text:”……. therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways……” – Haggai 1:5

Regardless what you think about death, it will come to us all, sooner or later. The question is: Are you preparing for death? Please be informed that we are all closer to dying today than we were yesterday. It will therefore be logical to also consider: what about the “hereafter?”. What about life after this one is over? Is this all there is? A few relatively short years on this earth and that is it? Surely not, because after death comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27). We shall all give account of our stewardship before God (Romans 14:10-12; Revelations 22:11-13). Then, it shall be a time for separation and reward (Matthew 25:31-46). When the end comes, the question is: how will you be remembered? “The clock is running’ wrote an American historian and author, Alice Morse Earle, ‘make the most of today, yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift and that is why it is called the present”. Every day that you are greeted ‘Good morning’ is a day closer to that day for mourning and every ‘Happy new year’ felicitation is a year closer to the end of your years. Please, consider your ways before it is too late.

Many years ago, a very successful man who invented the dynamite woke up to find his Obituary in all the newspapers. He decided to use that very rare opportunity to find out people’s comments about him. The headline he saw among others was startling, “Dynamite the king dies, and he was the merchant of death”. After seeing that headline he became downcast and thought to himself if that was all he meant to people and if that was how he was going to be remembered when death came calling eventually. The man never wanted to be remembered as “the merchant of death” hence he decided to rewrite the history of his life. Like the message of God through Prophet Haggai to Sennacherub and Joshua the high priest to consider their ways, the Dynamite man considered his ways; he redefined his values and decided to embark on peaceful missions henceforth. That ‘King of dynamite’ was Alfred Nobel who is globally remembered today, not as a merchant of death but for the great Nobel prizes being awarded. Quite unlike Alfred Nobel, many in the world today are agog with dissipation of energy on issues of life and things that won’t add up eventually when this world ends; and very assuredly, the world shall end with us one day (Matthew 24:38-39).

It is baffling that with the way death has been coming for great people around, some are still ignorant that no one, irrespective of age or anointing, can stop death whenever it decides to come (Ecclesiastes 8:8). Death is certainly no respecter of persons. It doesn’t matter your age, educational qualification or status in the society, when death comes, everything will come to an abrupt end. Empires have come and been dumped in history books. Powerful politicians with great oratorial powers have come and been forgotten. Flamboyant preachers of the Gospel have died and have not been raised. Political office holders that have embezzled public funds to the point of causing the nation great pains have expired without taking a dime with them. Death will come for you unexpectedly as it came for people who were watching a football match involving Nigeria and South Africa at the recent African Nations Cup in Cote d’ivoire or as it came for one of our national pride, Roosevelt Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank holdings, with his wife, son and others in that unfortunate air crash. Your end too will come one day and it shall come unexpectedly. Haggai the Prophet is calling you, particularly our leaders at the home-front, spiritual positions and the three tiers of government in the states and nation, at this time of Lent, to “Consider your ways!” and I add this- before it is too late. It is important to let everyone, especially the political gladiators, know that everything with a beginning shall surely end somehow and sometime. It must also be remembered that everyone with a responsibility have an obligation of accountability and shall ultimately be rewarded for every overt and covert acts by God (Ecclesiastes 11:1; 12:13; Revelations 22:11-12). I recall with great pain in my heart what we were needlessly subjected to during the currency scarcity season in our country. That was the height of wickedness of man to man, all because of mischievous political calculations. May God forgive our leaders for the lives that were lost and hardship we experienced during that dreadful time.

Beloved, please note that you are a pilgrim here. Jim Reeves sang that, This is not your our home, we are just passing through….. Whenever your time is up, at a time unknown, you shall be called home. It will be apt to ask you: how do you think you will be remembered when that time comes? What will be the genuine testimonies of people about you in your community, your place of work, your family members and members of your church? Will you be missed or will they say chorus ‘good riddance to bad rubbish’? More importantly, will heaven be happy to have you back or will it be a case of a failed life? The word of God to you at this time of Lent is for you to reflect very deeply on how you have been living your life, to reconsider your ways, to come to Jesus Christ who came to deliver us from the pains of this world and regrets of life hereafter, to acknowledge that He is Lord and to ask Him to come to your life. You need to redefine your values like Alfred Nobel, repent of your past deeds, have a change of attitude, invest in the work of the kingdom, assist those that are less-privileged than you and be a person of love. As God lives, you shall testify here and not regret hereafter, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers: Oh Lord, help me and don’t allow me use the temporal pleasures of this world to destroy the bliss of the eternal home, in Jesus’ name.

Cleric urges Nigerians not to despair

Again, Nigerians have been told not to despair as the present economic challenge being faced in the country is temporary.

The General Overseer of Seed of Christ Golden Church, Apostle Solomon Mustapha also known as Sebioba expressed confidence that Nigeria would get out of the woods.

He also maintained that his prophecy that the naira will be strong again, and the dollar would be disgraced, will come to pass, saying he was only voicing what God told him

He, however, warned that the government and Nigerians in general should not expect that prophets would be the ones to fix the country.

Mustapha made the comments during an interactive session with newsmen.

He said he had no apologies concerning the prophecy he made that the dollar would crash against the naira because he only relayed what God told him.

“The work of the prophet is to declare the word of God. When I said the dollar would crash, I was simply obeying God. The point is that the following day that I made the prophecy, the naira began to gain value and it gained value for about a week before it began to lose value again. So, I wonder why people were picking holes in the prophecy. Prophets are to prophesy not fix exchange rate?”

He said it is unfair to blame a bad economy on the prophet who says what he hears from God.  “It was what God told me that I shared with the people. Elisha prophesied concerning the situation in Samaria in Bible times and things changed almost immediately. What happened in the time of Elisha was worse than what we are experiencing today. People were eating themselves. If God could do it then, he can do it now”

Mustapha, however, noted that the prophet can’t play the role of the government. “The role of the prophet is to declare the word of God. It is left for the government to do the needful” He said.

The cleric who claimed to have been called by God in early 2000 said he does not patronise those in government. “If they want to seek counsel on what to do, we can counsel. But I will not go out of my way to meet government officials. I stay in my lane.”

The situation in Nigeria according to him calls for concerted efforts on the part of both the government and the people.

He said, “We should pray. But then, I think we need to begin to change our confession concerning Nigeria. In the US, the slogan is, God bless America. Their dollar has the inscription, in God we trust. But what inscription do we have on our naira?” he asked.

According to him, “The prophecy of God concerning Nigeria is that the country will be better. And we must also know that prophecies may not happen immediately.”

He cautioned politicians and government officials against corruption while urging them to stop siphoning the nation’s wealth abroad and gratifying their selfish desires.

He pleaded with young people to begin to think outside of the box if they want to get out of poverty and the frustration in the country.

“Sometimes I wonder why a university graduate will keep complaining there is no job. If you went to the university to study a course, why must you be looking for a job when you can start something small? The bane of many young people is that they want to start big.”

He cited the instance of a veterinary doctor he counseled to start rearing chicken after he searched for a job to no avail for four years.

“The beauty of the story of this young man is that he has become a successful farmer now. He started with just about 10 chickens. His farm is now so big that he now travels in and out of the country. People should learn to start small. Anything you want to do, if you start from the top, you will come down.”

Citing his example, he said, “I left a five-bedroom flat in Ekiti, Ekiti State to go to Ibadan, Oyo State, to do ministry. God asked me to go to Ibadan. I left the comfort of where I was. My wife and I rented a one-room apartment in Ibadan and we pleaded with the owner of a primary school to allow us to use the place for our church meetings. That was how we started. Today, the ministry has grown.”

He said the ministry has been involved in many social works and has invested heavily in people’s health.

“Our ministry sponsors eye operations for about 200 people at every given time. We have a hospital in Abuja where these people are attended to. We house them, give them food for the period they are in the hospital, and sponsor their eye surgeries like the removal of cataracts. We also buy artificial limbs for people who need them.”
