  • How to be a successful entrepreneur, by expert

How to be a successful entrepreneur, by expert

Going by the gloomy economic climate in Nigeria, those who wish to make progress must take decisions which enable them to move in terms of career and geographical locations.

This was the view of a business coach, Gbenga Ogunbowale at a business seminar held at the Foursquare Gospel Church, Aba Ibeji, Odo Ona Kekere, Ibadan.

Ogunbowale, who is the Co founder and CEO of Grand Master, an online platform that connects grant seekers to funding, informed his audience that to excel as an entrepreneur, since paid jobs are no longer readily available, one must imbibe five habits of of successful entrepreneurs.

The first, he noted was the need to have a mentor. Sometimes, he said “your mentor can be that person you are very familiar with but who have made a success of whatever he or she is busy doing.”

The Tony Elumelu Fellow noted a mentor may even be your junior in age but he has superior experience at doing something in a manner that it translates into money .

Aside mentorship, Ogunbowale said resigning from a job for another or going into business is one sure way of making more money judging by our current financial climate.

Although he acknowledged that not everyone is cut out for business, he observed that the practice of joining the Joneses in the same business is not a guarantee for success rather, he opined that successful entrepreneurs succeed because they dared to be different.

He listed the five habits as daring to be different , learning new skills, being impact driven, trying something else if what you are presently engaged in is not fetching you your desired income and seizing opportunities such as are available from grants and government agencies.

The Pastor of the Church, Dr Damilola Lewis, explained that the rational for organizing the seminar was because the church has an army of young members and struggling adults whose lives and financial straits, he feels will be positively impacted by the seminar.

The chairman of the organizing committee, Bayo Arohunmolase said most attendees were greatly impacted judging by their comments and activities after the seminar as some were already thinking and taking steps to register their own businesses while some are already preparing their project proposals with the intent to seek funding grants.

  • ‘It will take 50 years to clear Nigeria’s mess’

‘It will take 50 years to clear Nigeria’s mess’

Sound Character is an inspirational book that has made so much impact in the lives of several primary and secondary school students across Nigeria since its first publication in 2005. Spiritual and financial partners with the God Father and Family Church International, Akure, Pastor David Adegboyega, the author of the highly compelling educational book spoke to Adeola Ogunlade on the making of the book and how Nigeria transformation is hinged on character transformation.

What were you doing before your present vocation?

I worked at Media Perspectives Limited for 17 months and then joined First Bank on 18 March 2008 till 25 March 2022. In view of the passion to raise a critical mass of young Nigerians to whom corruption is not an option, I took a bow from the bank to focus on this passion.

My 14 years with the First Bank have prepared me for this journey to transform Nigeria. To transform Nigeria will take us the next 50 years because the decline we see today happened over the last 50 years. I call this the #50YearChallenge. For that to happen, we must work with the teenagers and younger ones today and for the next 50 years, so we do a bottom-up cleansing of the people.

What informed your passion for sound character cultivation?

As I mentioned above, the need to raise a new generation of Nigerians to whom corruption will not be an option informed my passion. Also, the need to engage young people on how to manage freedom because I have realised that freedom is a combination of two words ‘free’ and ‘dom’ which means that you are free but within a ‘dom’ain. The question is what determines the domain? While in secondary school, the teachers, assembly, lights out in the dormitory, weekly hairdo for the girls, etc. helped to define the domain of their freedom. But by the time our young people enter higher institutions, they find freedom so there is a need to engage with them on how to make the best of it.

My passion is fueled by the vision of a new nation, and that means new people and that means the young ones of today because they are really the tomorrow we dream of. I love the song by Timi Dakolo ‘Great Nation’. A part of it says: “We’re all we have, we’ll defend our land, we believe in this nation, and we know we’ll get there.” That song inspired me to work with HarnessMusic to create the sound character theme song.

What are sound character and its significance to a healthy society or nation?

Character is the inner form that makes anyone or anything that it is. It is the essential content a person is made of, the inner reality and quality in which thoughts, speech, decisions, behavior, and relations are rooted. Character is a combination of qualities that make up a person, and it could either be good or bad. It is the invisible part of a person that governs conduct. Sound Character attributes show you as a person of value and positive influence on society. Sound Character attributes include godliness, patience, hard work, integrity, obedience, humility, responsibility, perseverance, and biggest of all, love. The greatest significance of sound character is that it helps us manage freedom. And, don’t let us think this only pertains to young people. Everyone is constantly challenged by freedom, and the antidote to managing freedom is sound character. The few sound character qualities highlighted above are enough to transform society or nation. Take ‘patience’ as an example. Just imagine for a moment how our roads will be if everybody is patient with the other road users. Imagine arriving at a junction where four roads meet, and where the traffic light is not working. Can you just imagine everyone being patient and allowing others to go in their turn? This sounds like Utopia! But we can make it happen if we dare. If you dare to be, you will become. Sound character impacts the four pillars of society which are the home, education, religion, and the media. Imagine when these sound character qualities hold sway in all any of these pillars.

Tell us about your book, ‘Sound Character: Maxim for a Successful Future’, that many public and private schools have infused in their curriculum.

The book contains daily nuggets on sound characters with cartoon illustrations. It is intended that this is used daily during the assembly to speak with the students while parents can use it at home during their family devotion. It is a very handy book with incisive nuggets.

Altogether, about 40,000 copies have been printed and distributed. Several well-meaning individuals and organizations have made this happen. The first person to blow my mind on the possibilities of the book is the Wife of a former Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, who branded 10,000 copies to celebrate Nigeria’s 52nd Independence Day Anniversary in 2012. First Bank, where I used to work, did 17,000 copies. Hon. Jide Jimoh, then Chairman, Yaba LCDA (now Honourable Member of the House of Reps, Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency) did 1,000 copies in 2014. A fashion SME, Brand Collections by Nene, did 1,200 copies in 2022, while my wife and I have done over 5,000 most of which have been given out. Several schools including some Federal Government Colleges have bought the books. The most interesting is a school by name Immaculate Grace School in Ojokoro area of Lagos; where the books have been used for the past 10 years everyday at the assembly where teachers and even the students have a roster for reading and explaining the book at the assembly. Recently, Sceptre Comprehensive College in Ketu area of Lagos shared a testimonial of a student returning some amount of money because they are being taught sound character. I was thoroughly awed.

The book has impacted across the country through the support of volunteers such as Seyi Okewale when he served in Wamba LGA of Nasarawa State, Ayo Emmanuel Ojo when he served in Onitsha, Anambra State, John Ikhatalor when he served in Jos, Plateau State. Chinyere Okafor also gave me the opportunity to impact students at Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State. I can go on and on but we are only just getting started.

How does the book aid the intellectual, moral & social growth of children?

The philosophy behind the book is that what we put into education today will reflect in our society tomorrow. Children are tabula rasa, meaning clean slates; they do not have any preconceived ideas giving us a good chance to ingrain the desired values in them. The sound character book aids the intellectual, moral, and social growth of children as they daily interact with the quotes and cartoon illustrations. The illustrations tell a thousand stories that children can interpret in their own way, and own the meaning. This is even more powerful than when someone tries to explain the meaning to them. I have amazing testimonials from proprietors and proprietresses. The book also has versions for parents where they can write for their children on sound character; their handwriting then becomes their voice when the child is thousands of miles away from home. There is also a 31-day calendar version which can be hung on the wall in each classroom or bedroom. All these help to reinforce the sound character message.

  • Row in Gombe over day-old baby recovered from pit latrine

Row in Gombe over day-old baby recovered from pit latrine

Residents of Nina, a community in Bagadaza area of Gombe, the capital city of Gombe State, woke up recently to the shocking discovery of a day-old baby thrown into a pit latrine by her mentally ill mother about one and a half hours after she was born.

By the time a young woman in the neighbourhood found the innocent tot crying for life, its entire body was not only soaked in faeces, it was covered by ants and maggots.

Sources at Nina neighbourhood told our correspondent that Baby Destiny Godswill

was discovered in the pit latrine by one Mercy Musa Galadima, a 28-year-old daughter of a resident named Monica Musa. Mercy was said to have been asked by her mother to clean the bathroom/toilet for her uncle and his wife who spent the night with them so the couple could have their bath before embarking on their journey to Jos.

But as soon as Mercy entered the bathroom/toilet, she heard the cry of the baby but thought it was a cat that had fallen into the pit toilet. Mercy immediately called the attention of her mother who on getting to the scene realised that it was the cry of a baby.

Monica Musa immediately mobilised her family members to break the pit latrine and rescue Baby Destiny with her nose, mouth and ears covered with faeces, maggots and ants.

Monica immediately cut off the umbilical cord, washed the baby and took her to the hospital for medical attention.

Monica, who named the baby Destiny, told our correspondent in an interview that immediately she heard its voice in the pit latrine, she knew it was the cry of a baby.

She said: “When I heard the baby cry, I told myself that this is a life and it must be saved. So I mobilised my children who broke the pit and went into it to rescue the baby.

“The baby’s cry sounded like a cry for help and I felt that compelling pressure to urgently do something to rescue her.”

Baby Destiny’s mentally deranged mother, 26 years old Vivian Usman, was said to be a neighbour who only came home occasionally to pass the night in her premises. She was said to have been impregnated by her boyfriend identified simply as Daniel.

Destiny was said to be Vivian’s fourth child though she had earlier lost one of them. Destiny’s elder sister was said to have died of starvation because Vivian, the third of Usman Alhaji’s eight children, failed to breastfeed her.

Eight of Alhaji’s grandchildren under the age of six are living with him in his three-room apartment at Kushi, a village of Filiya in Shongom Local Government Area, Gombe State. Kushi shares border with Koma village in Taraba State.

Musa depends only on farming to sustain his family of eight grandchildren and a daughter, Vivian, who are living with him. He does not enjoy the best of health and reeks heavily with local gin.

Immediately baby Destiny was rescued, Monica suspected that Vivian was the mother, having previously confronted her that she was pregnant but she denied it.

Asked about the baby, Vivian confessed that it belonged to her and was shocked to find that it was still alive. However, her unstable mental health was evident as she laughed repeatedly while answering the questions put to her.

Following the shocking discovery, Madam Monica sent for Alhaji (Vivian’s father), who on arrival was shocked by the incident.

He said: “I couldn’t believe what I saw. But I am helpless because I cannot take custody of the new baby.

“I already have eight grandchildren dumped with me by their mothers. One of them is five years old Jessica whose mother dropped with me and has never looked back for almost six years now.”

Consequently, Alhaji agreed to live Baby Destiny in the care of Monica in the interim, particularly because Vivian could not breastfeed the new baby.

“So in order for her not to suffer and die like the previous one, I decided to live her with Madam Monica Musa,” Alhaji said.

But as the story of a baby found in pit latrine spread in the area, it attracted the attention of a staff member of Gombe State Ministry of Women Affairs who reported the matter to the ministry.

Two weeks after her birth and rescue from the pit latrine, officials of the ministry visited the home of Madam Monica and forcibly took the baby from her, saying that it belonged to the state government.

The action of the government officials attracted the attention of Pastor Joshua Kadala, who accompanied madam Monica to the ministry where the baby was detained and allegedly sold to a family at Federal Low Cost area in Gombe without the knowledge or approval of Madam Monica and the baby’s grandfather, Alhaji, who had asked that the baby be kept in Monica’s care.

Monica said: “When we got there on that day, they told me that I should come back for the baby in five days time because they wanted to take her to the hospital for medical treatment.

“They said if I wanted the baby to be in my custody, I had to fill a form requesting for her and the state government would grant the approval.

“I was shocked when I went back five days later to discover that the Director of Social Welfare in the ministry, one Mrs Asabe Adamu Malami, had already filled the form and put the baby in her custody.

“Later, we learnt that the baby had been sold to a woman at Federal Low Cost without the knowledge or approval of the parents.

“I feel so bad because I rescued the baby and I know that God has a purpose for her life; that was why He used me to save her life.

“After we broke the concrete pit latrine, my daughter went into it to rescue the baby. So, how can government officials now come and forcibly take the baby from us only to sell her to somebody without respect for human life?”

Pastor Kadala, who had been following Monica through her battle to secure the custody of the child, said it was unfortunate that government officials could be so callous in the way Monica and baby Destiny were treated.

He said: “I was particularly not happy at the way the Ministry of women Affairs handled the case of Baby Destiny, and even more surprised that rather than being grateful to this woman for saving a life, she is being treated like a criminal.”

Counsel to Alhaji and Madam Monica, Barrister Wunfe John Nimfas, in a petition to the Department of State Security (DSS) office in Gombe against the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Naomi Awak; the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Benjamin Wabida; Director Child, Mr. Marcus Joseph; Director Social, Mrs. Asebe Adamu Malami and Jerry Sanni Mol’Amboke, a staff of the ministry, accused them of complicity in the act of child trafficking and/or sale of a grandchild of Usman Alhaji in custody of Mrs. Monica Musa.

Nimfas, in the petition, described the incident as a classic case of child trafficking and/or sale of child by government official under the pretence of exercising their statutory power.

He asked the DSS to use its good offices to hurriedly wade into the matter and bring the culprits to book.

“It is our brief and we verily believe that our client’s daughter by name Vivian Usman delivered a baby girl out of wedlock on the 2nd May, 2022 at Bagadaza in Gombe. Thereafter, the said Vivian, who was believe to be suffering from strange and erratic mental insanity, threw the baby into a pit latrine in a house belonging to one of our client Mrs. Monica Musa at Bagadaza.”

He said the attention and concern of Madam Monica, the owner of the house, and other occupants was attracted to the toilet area due to the baby’s voice coming out from the said pit toilet, and having realised that it was a baby, hurriedly broke down the pit toilet and rescued the baby who was wrapped in a sack.

According to him, Monica,  with the assistance of a nurse that lived in the area, cut the umbilical cord, washed the baby and rushed her to the hospital for proper medical examination and medication.

He said Monica, being a mother, suspected that Vivian could be the one behind the act, having noticed some changes and therefore summoned her wherein Vivian confirmed that she was the one who delivered and threw the baby into the pit latrine.

“That having found that Vivian is the mother of the child, Mrs. Monica sent for the father of Vivian to come from Kushi of Shongom Local Government of Gombe State.

“That after meeting Vivian’s father with other relations at Bagadaza, Mr. Usman Alhaji entrusted the baby to Mrs. Monica to continue looking after the baby, considering the role played by Mrs. Monica in rescuing and saving the life of the baby, however, pending the whole decision that will be taken by the family as to who will have the custody of the baby.

“That the above decision by our client, Mr. Usman Alhaji, was taken in the best interest of the child, putting into consideration the mental and physical health condition of Vivian, as she cannot take proper care of the baby.”

    Gombe

The petition stated further that soon after Mr. Usman Alhaji left for Kushi, some people who identified themselves as staff of the Gombe State Ministry of Women Affairs came to his client’s

house at Bagadaza and demanded that she should hand over the child to them or risk been arrested by the police.

However, Mrs. Monica refused to hand over the baby to them or cowed by their threat. “Thereafter, the said staff called and asked how much they could offer to Mrs. Monica to release the baby to them. Still, Mrs. Monica remained firm and was never moved by the huge offer.

“Soon after, a staff of Ministry of Women Affairs by name Bitrus Madugu, acting on the instruction of the Director Social, Mrs. Asabe Adamu Malami, came to our client’s house and ceased the baby from our client to the Ministry of Women Affairs. The baby was directly brought to Director Social.

“Our client followed the said Government Staff to Ministry of Women Affairs but was told by Director Social to come back after five (5) days, that the baby would undergo proper medical examination to ascertain her wellness before handing over the baby back to Mrs. Monica. Our client went home with the hope and expectation that the baby would return to her as promised by Director Social.

“That after a week, our client received no call from the Ministry of Women Affairs. However, an Application Form for Child Adoption was brought to her by Jerry Sani which our client filled and submitted same through Mr. Jerry that brought the form to her.

“Three weeks after and without a call or response from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Monica got hint that the baby was already given out for adoption to somebody.

“That sequel to the above, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Women Affairs with Permanent Secretary, Director Child, Director Social, Pastor Joshua Kadala, Apostle Zarma Istifanus and Mrs. Monica Musa.

“At the meeting, Director Social Mrs. Asabe categorically confirmed that it was Honourable Commissioner that directed her to instruct Mr. Jerry to obtain Police Report to the effect that Jerry found the baby in an uncompleted building and that the Commissioner had expressed interest over the baby.”

The petition stated that it was Mr. Jerry who went and furnished the Police with the false information leading to the Police Report issued to the Ministry of Women Affairs.

“Our client, Mr. Usman Alhaji, was also at the Ministry of Women Affairs in company of Pastor Kadala and Mrs. Monica, where he met with the Permanent Secretary, and for a reason best known to Perm. Sec, advised that a written Agreement be executed between Mr. Usman Alhaji and Mrs. Monica with regard to the custody of the baby before the baby could be released to them.

“When all entreaties by Mr. Usman Alhaji to get his granddaughter from the Ministry proved abortive, he wrote and demanded the release of his grand- daughter from the Ministry of Women Affair on 9th June, 2022.

“Surprisingly and in another twist, the Perm Sec further directed our clients to obtain a clearance Report from the Nigerian Police before the baby could be released to them. However, after visit to the Police Headquarters Gombe by our client in company of Pastor Joshua Kadala, the Police through 2/i.c Gender confirmed to our clients that it is not within their power to do so.”

The petition also stated that the Police through 2/i.c Gender are equally aware of the fact that Mr. Jerry, acting under the instruction of Director Social Mrs. Asabe, had furnished the Police with false information, leading to the said Police Report issued to the Ministry of Women Affairs. However, nothing was done by the police to bring the culprit to book.

“Our clients in company of Pastor Joshua Kadala went back to the Ministry of Women Affairs from the Police Headquarters and informed them about the position of the Police. But to our client’s greatest surprise, they were told by the Director Child Mr. Joseph Marcus that the child belongs to Government and therefore could not be released to our clients. That the said officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs never disclosed to our client where they took the baby to and who is in custody of the child besides stating that Government owns the child.”

Barrister Nimfas said “it is shocking and highly embarrassing to know from the series of audio conversation recorded that the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, the Permanent Secretary, the Director Child, the Director Social and Mr. Jerry Sani were complicit in either surreptitiously selling the baby or illegally abducting the baby and giving her out by way of adoption to a high profile individual in the society, as our client got the hint that the baby is currently with a woman who resides at Federal Low cost Gombe.

“It is pertinent to point out that since the grand-father to the baby in question is alive and had willingly given the custody of his grand- daughter to Mrs. Monica albeit temporarily, the Ministry of Women Affairs Gombe State cannot therefore seize the baby against the will of her grandfather and Mrs. Monica who rescued the baby and who was taking care of the baby at the instance of the grandfather before the baby was illegally and forcibly seized from Mrs. Monica.

“It is quite unfortunate that instead of the Ministry of Women Affairs to do the right thing and ensure that the baby remains with her blood relations since they are identified, they resorted to all sort of illegality and threat against our clients, threatening possible criminal prosecution should our clients insist on having the baby. In fact, one wonders which offence was committed by our client to warrant being prosecuted by the state. While we condemned in totality the attitude of Miss Vivian for throwing the baby in the toilet after delivery and which is criminal, we equally sympathise with her health condition, both mental and physical, which we believe triggered her action.

“The state may wish to arrest and prosecute Miss Vivian. However, it is expedient and honourable for a responsible government to be more concerned about restoring her mental health condition than arresting and prosecuting an individual with mental insanity.”

When our Correspondent visited the office of the Permanent Secretary Women Affairs in Gombe, he was said to be out of office for a seminar.

Although the Director of Social Welfare, Mrs. Asabe, was on seat, she insisted that she would not violate protocol by talking to the press, adding that only the Permanent Secretary had the right to do so.

After waiting for more than one hour, our correspondent left his number with a staff member of the ministry so that he could be contacted whenever the permanent Secretary was around, but at the time of filing this report there had been no response from the ministry.

At Kushi village, the grandfather of Baby Destiny said all his efforts to get his granddaughter back from the ministry had yielded no result, adding that he was finding it difficult to get transport fare to travel to Gombe to pursue the matter.

According to him, the mental health of Vivian, his daughter and mother of baby Destiny, is a bit stable now because he was using traditional medicine for her.

Apart from being mentally sick, Vivian is also HIV positive and asthmatic. She depends on the ARV drug which she takes once every month at the General Hospital Filiya.

Vivian, looking calm and healthy now, works on her father’s farm to support him in taking care of the eight grandchildren that are living with him.

  • When WEBIC ministers returned to classroom for spiritual growth

When WEBIC ministers returned to classroom for spiritual growth

TAKING a cue from the corporate world where serious organisations priorities training and retraining of staff, ministers of World Evangelism Inc.(WEBIC) returned to the classroom recently to sharpen their spiritual skills.

They are obeying the directive of the Spiritual Head, who is also the Founder/General Overseer, Prophet (Dr.) Samson Ayorinde to assemble once in a quarter to learn more about spirituality and leadership skills.

As early as 9 am that Saturday morning, virtually all the ordained ministers from all the branches in Lagos State turned up at the Youth Church in the church’s headquarters for the event.

Participants clutched their note pads and other electronic gadgets to jot down notes as they listened to the Resource Persons. Those in attendance were Senior Pastors, pastors, Sunday school teachers, Prayer Warriors, and other leaders in the church.

Coincidentally, the date of the seminar fell within WEBIC 2nd Half Year Fasting and Prayer

The event, WEBIC National Conference, had the theme: ‘One fold, one shepherd..’

Speaking at the event, Ayorinde went down memory lane to tell participants how God gave him the vision to start the church.

He said he was an atheist and student of Architecture, Ahmadu Bello University(ABU), Zaria Kaduna State. “I had that audible noise in 1986 at ABU, saying go and preach my word. I got Gideon’s Bible. I started reading it.”

According to Ayorinde, “a Christian student friend whom I have resisted his preaching was surprised when he came into my room, met me reading the bible. I told him I would like to be born again. He led me to accept Jesus

“A few days later, I was speaking in tongues. I converted a Muslim student who also went back home to convert his parents.”

Ayorinde told the participants that the training they went through on July 16th would prepare them for the restart of the crusade.  “Don’t be distracted. Stay focused. Stay put. Distraction is inevitable. I was called to go into mass evangelism (Crusade). I didn’t want to start a church, but God said I must. In obedience, we started World Evangelism Bible Church.”

Quoting John 15:1-7, he admonished the participants to abide in their calling. He urged them to avoid murmuring and dispute.

“Let us settle our differences amicably because the Lord is coming back soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Resource Person for the training, Rev. Joseph Owoseni, spoke at length on the topic, “The Good Shepherd “Quoting from Ezekiel 34 and John 10:11, he said a shepherd must be able to meet the needs of his sheep (flock).

Relying on the import of Ezekiel 34, Owoseni said God would remove and curse a shepherd who couldn’t keep his flock, adding that there are challenges ahead of the church, but as pastors, we must not bow under pressure. He said God doesn’t joke with his flock. Any shepherd who fails in his duty, the Almighty will replace him.

Martins: Faithful soldier of Christ goes home

Oover the fifteen-plus years, I have known Pastor Femi. I discovered in him a deep determination to apply all of his energies to achieve the tasks God placed in his hands. He did not spare himself to do God’s work. Even down to the end of his life, he put duty above comfort, and sought to be a faithful soldier and steward.”

These were the words of the Founder, West Africa Theological Seminary (WATS), Gary Maxey, as the Provost of West Africa Theological Seminary (WATS) Lagos, who passed away on Saturday May 28th, 2022 was laid to rest on the 1st of July 2022.

The burial rites which lasted for five days commenced with a service of songs on June 29th, 2022, at West Africa Theological Seminary, Ipaja, Lagos.

Speaking at the Christian wake, the Bishop Theologian and the Bishop of the Ilesha Anglican Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Professor Dapo Asaju, urged Christians to emulate the exemplary life lived by the late Provost of WATS.

Asaju said, “character of a true believer is to find refuge in our Lord Jesus Christ; Heaven is our home, our dwelling place. This is why children of God are not afraid of reaching the final destination.”

Speaking at the outing service on July 3rd at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Lagos Diocese, Igbogila Circuit, Archbishop of Lagos Methodist Church, Nigeria, The Most Revd Dr. Isaac Ayobami Olawuji urged Christians not to be afraid of death.

The attendance of the event by church leaders across denominations, representatives of the Local Government Councils, international bodies, the media, WATS Board of Trustees, Governing Council, and past Provosts both physically and virtually attested to how worthy the late Martins was.

He was unquestionably a Christian figure and one of the most powerful Provosts to have served in WATS extended network around the globe and his platform as the Provost/ of WATS and the Alumni of President of Yaba College of Technology till his last breath allowed him to affect more lives, no doubt WATS Administrative Block has been named after him to keep his memory.

Martins’ passion and selfless endowment singled him out as a Masters’ student at WATS to become a member of the WATS Governing Council before he served as the Director of Communication and Development before he rose to enviable position as WATS Provost.

He was passionate about the greater glory of West Africa Theological Seminary. His vision and dream were to see WATS become the most cherished theological institution in Africa like Harvard University in the future.

The heart of Martins’s service at WATS was the priority of payment of staff salaries, his passion for raising scholarships for leaders in training; and his commitment to institutional development at WATS.

In his tribute to Pastor Martins, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said that the demise of a great man is always an irreplaceable loss not only to his immediate family but to humanity at large. The news of the passing unto glory of your late Provost, Pastor Oluwafemi Oluwagbemiga Martins on the 28th of May, 2022 was a rude shock, but then what can we do? He has gone the way ordained for all mortals.

  • How mystery fire killed our four boys, by Lagos couple

How mystery fire killed our four boys, by Lagos couple

For Mr and Mrs Anyaobi Michael Chukwudi and wife, who lost four sons in a fire incident last month, life may never be the same again. Nearly a month after, as they try to pick their pieces, the disillusioned couple tell their story to Gboyega Alaka.

HOW do you begin to placate a husband and wife who lost their four sons to a brutal midnight fire incident within a few days, leaving them with only one daughter, their youngest? How do they even begin to pick their pieces? Will they ever heal? Can their life ever be normal again? And to think that all their belongings, including photos that they could keep as memories, also perished, putting them in a destitute and pathetic situation. However, that is the lot of Mr Anyaobi Michael Chukwudi, 46 from Ibuzor, Delta State and wife, Faith Anyaobi Chukwudi.

According to Anyaobi, who hails from Ibuzor, Delta State, the unfortunate incident occurred on the 25th of June, 2022 at number 118, Tapa Road, Oke-Oko, Ishawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State around 1pm to 1.30pm.

“I was sleeping with my wife in my apartment at number 118, Tapa Road, Oke-oko, Ishawo, Ikorodu, Lagos, when I heard a shout of ‘Help Fire!’ from my children’s apartment. It was the voice of my first son, Prayer.  The four boys slept in one room and parlour self-contain apartment, while my wife and I and our youngest, a girl, Esther, slept in another room and parlour self-contain which we rented anew in the same compound and moved into just two days earlier.

“The former occupant moved out and we decided to rent it, since our own apartment was already too tight for us. When we slept that night, there was no light, so I switched on the generator; but when the PHCN brought back power, I got up, switched it off, changed the source of power and went back to sleep. It was not long after that I heard Prayer’s cry of ‘fire, fire, fire.’

“Quickly, I took the key to open our apartment, ran to the window to check and saw fire everywhere. I summoned courage and opened the door, but the fire was so much and I got severely burnt, so I ran out and called for help from neighbours. Immediately the neighbours started coming out to help. I went back in and rescued Prayer; I rescued TrustinGod, then I rescued Ebubechukwu. But the second born, Jeremiah, was burnt badly. He died right there. We took the surviving ones to the General Hospital, Ikorodu. Even my wife was burnt at the buttocks side. It’s only my daughter that escaped with the slightest burn.

“Luckily, they were attended to immediately at the hospital. Some neighbour had volunteered his car to take the kids there; so when we got there, we saw that they were already on drip and being treated. They did what they could; but they said the burns were too severe and referred us to Gbagada General Hospital that same night.

“We got there by 5.30am and they immediately attended to us, but unfortunately, we lost the second boy, TrustinGod. Then it remained Prayer and Ebubechuckwu. Immediately, they referred us to LASUTH, where we spent about three days, praying and hoping that the two boys survived. They said they had a machine that could aid their treatment there.

Unfortunately, Prayer and Ebubechukwu gave up in quick succession.”

“And to think that I initially thought of locking the door from outside! But I told myself that the boys are big enough. Besides, I thought there might be need for emergency. So I let them lock it from behind every night.

” I think it was because Jeremiah tried to open the door that she got severely burned.”

Chukwudi however have some good words for the hospitals, starting with the General Hospital Ikorodu.

“I’d say they attended to us well; they tried their best. They didn’t ask for money before commencing treatment. But when we arrived there, they asked for money. When they discovered that it was too severe, they referred us to Gbagada. Even in Gbagada, they started attending to them before asking us for money. Likewise LASUTH, where they said they had a certain machine that was needed to treat the boys. However, there was a bit of delay in attending to us there, until my wife started screaming at them that we were referred and our case was emergency.”

I felt like ending it all

Recalling how he felt during the whole travail, Chukwudi said, “When I lost my second son and saw the condition of the last two, Prayer and Ebube, I said ‘God, if you can even leave one of these two for me, I would be grateful’.  But when the last one gave up, I think I fainted and people had to rush to revive me and started placating me. I even felt like ending it all. It was, still is not an easy experience, but with God, my pastor and all the people around me, who encouraged me, I have been able to stay strong. I attend Covenant Life Church, Ikorodu branch and my senior pastor is Pastor Olumide Dada.

“My first born Prayer was 18. He had just finished his school certificate exam and waiting to take his NECO and JAMB; TrustinGod was 16 years old, he was in SS2; then Jeremiah was 13 years old in JSS1. Ebubechukwu was 11 years. He was going to take the common entrance examination.”

    Mystery fire

Curiously, Chukwudi said the fire and its source remains a big mystery nearly a month after.

“We had only stayed in our new apartment for two days before this fire incident. We were the only family in the two apartments in the house, so I cannot say it spread from any other apartment. Even while the fire was burning, there was PHCN light throughout, so we cannot say it was caused by any spark. Later PHCN people came to conduct an investigation and they said they found no spark anywhere. Even my gas was not on and the cylinder did not  explode even when everything in the apartments and the whole house had burned down. There was no petrol or any inflammable anywhere in the house; even the generator sat in its place while the fire raged, until the fire spread to where it was and engulfed it.”

Chukwudi said the matter was reported at the Owutu Police Station, and they later went to the scene to carry out their investigation, but nothing has come out of it.

Even the landlady (her husband who is the actual landlord lives abroad), who lives nearby, remains perplexed about the cause of the fire.

    Special appeal

Now, as he struggles to settle into his bleak reality, Chukwudi says his only appeal is to the government and the good people of Nigeria.

“As it is, we have lost everything. Aside our four boys, everything we owned was consumed in the fire. Even our phones got burnt. Right now, I am squatting at my Senior Pastor Olumide Dada’s place in Maryland, while my wife has gone to stay with her aunty in Akure. So, my immediate need is accommodation and finance to get back on my feet again. I am appealing to the government and the good people of Nigeria to come to our aid. My wife and I will appreciate every help. Before the fire, both my wife and I were engaged in recycling business.”

I almost ended it all – wife

For Chukwudi’s wife, Faith, life can never be the same again. As far as she is concerned, the only reason she is alive and breathing is God. Left alone, she just might have ended it all, because the horror was too much to stomach.

“I even wanted to kill myself, but people prevailed on me. My pastor and his wife were all over me, they kept staying by my side and placating me, preaching, praying, encouraging me. Assuming they did not take me to their house, I probably would have ended it all. Four children, all gone just like that?”

Asked if she suspected any foul play or if the fire could be a result of some carelessness, Faith said, “Not really. I was the one that  cooked that very night and I switched off the gas, so it is not as if we were careless.  I really cannot tell where that evil fire came from. Even my hot plate has been bad for more than three months, so it could not have been from there.”

Could it be from phone fire? Could the children have been charging their phones and slept off?

“No, they did not even have phones. Only the most senior had a phone, but I had seized it from him, because I noticed he was not having time for his studies, even when he had an upcoming exam to write. Also when I sent him on errands, he wasn’t concentrating, so I seized it, pending when he would finish his exams.”

She also made a special appeal for help.

“We will appreciate anything Nigerians can use to support us because we don’t have a house over out head as we speak. When the incident first happened, we were staying with our pastor before I moved to stay with my aunty in Akure.”
