  • Terrorism in Nigeria not religious, says Thompson

THE Senior Pastor of Living Waters Unlimited Church, Rev Ladi Thompson has said the ongoing insurgency is not a religious war but satanic onslaught against Nigeria.

Thompson spoke at a breakfast meeting organised by Christian Press Association of Nigeria in Lagos.

He said every nation in the world that is progressing has already recognised that there is a new form of warfare disguised as terrorism.

The warfare, he pointed out, uses what they call hybrid effect. “It is well documented all over the world that it a global warfare with local faces, it is well documented that those warfare has never existed before.

“We are not dealing with a religious problem; it is not a religious problem. It is not primarily an Islamic problem, it is designed that anybody who treats it like a religious problem is like a neighbor pouring petrol into the fire to help you quench the fire in your house”.

Nigeria, he stated, is “a nation at war. It is a new time of war. It is a special type of war. If after declaring that and we get the entire nation to face it that we are at war and define the kind of war, we will make headway in the fight against insurgency in Nigeria.”

He took a swipe at the church for allowing itself to be distracted by the ongoing insurgency by failing to preach the gospel of Jesus that is able to save the sinners and make them to be new creatures in Christ.

He added the “Church solution is the position of non-violence communication, our position is fixed.

“I have mentioned to people that God loves Shekau like he loves anybody here; there is this expression of God that while you were yet sinners He loved you. So God does not hate Shekau.”

He noted God has ordained the church as his mouth piece and “we are the ones who will face God on this aspect for the purpose of his kingdom before sensationalism.

“We are here to fight for the future of Nigeria, for religious liberty, for our own destinies, to ensure that there will be light that darkness does not cover Nigeria.”

He further said God does not hate a Fulani herdsman and “if your heart is beginning to hate, you will be cut off from the solutions of the kingdom of God. So the church is not allowed to rejoice over violence.”

  • Abiara to Fatoyinbo: go back to God

Founder of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Agbala Itura Lagos, Prophet Samuel Abiara, has advised embattled Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) to seek the face of God for restoration.

Abiara said with the help of God, he can overcome the rape accusation against him by celebrity photographer Busola Dakolo.

He however cautioned his accusers to be wary of their utterances because God is the ultimate judge.

In a statement last week in Lagos, Abiara said Fatoyinbo will overcome if he “goes before God and iron things out. I believe God will talk to him and restore him.”

He added: “My advice to Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo is to go to the presence of God and believe this time will pass, you will overcome.”

To his accusers, Abiara said: “I want everybody to be very careful because God is the all- knowing.

“He is the true witness of what actually happened between them. The word of God says we must not judge anybody.”

The rape accusation, according to him, is a dent on the body of Christ. He however said nobody should rejoice over the development.

“This issue is not good news at all for the body of Christ. As human being, some people will be rejoicing because of this allegation.

“It is nothing to rejoice about.  Indeed it is very sad news for all true ministers of the Gospel.”

To those trouncing the church over the issue, Abiara said: “All accusers against the body of Christ and the man of God must be careful not to be judgmental. Let God himself intervene.

“All accusers and those that carry fake news on social media, you must be very careful not to cause havoc in the body of Christ and the ministry of men of God.”

He counseled members of COZA to stand by their pastor and the church at this troubled moment instead of leaving.

“This is not the time to leave the church or abandon the man of God because of the entire allegations against your pastor.

“It is time to bring to memory how his life and ministry has been a blessing to many lives.

“Though it is very cloudy and stormy, I promise that the storm will soon be over. It is good to stand by your Pastor.”

  • Methodist Prelate decries England Church’s decision on same sex marriage

The Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Rev. Samuel Uche, has decried the decision of the Methodist Church in England to adopt the same sex marriage and other forms of gay and lesbian activities.

Uche spoke on Thursday while briefing newsmen at the Wesley House Marina, Lagos, saying that same sex relationships were contrary to God’s principles and laws.

“The British people told us that polygamy and polyandry is bad; why are they becoming morally and spiritually deprived?

“We will never accept it; Methodist Church Nigeria will not accept it, as the official mouthpiece of Methodist Church Nigeria and Diaspora.

“What I am saying now is the opinion of the church; we will not allow and accept it, and if they go ahead to ratify it by 2020, we will severe relationship and connections with them.

“If they do not have moral fibre, they should invite Methodist Church Nigeria to re-christianise them.

“This is satanic, and it is coming from the pit of hell,” he said.

The UK’s Methodist Church had taken a step closer to embracing equal marriage, after members overwhelmingly backed a measure that opens the door to same-sex unions.

The Church members at the Methodist Conference in Birmingham on July 3 voted overwhelmingly in favour of a policy that could lead to the church embracing same-sex unions.

The motion, which passed by 247 votes to 48, “consents in principle to the marriage of same-sex couples on Methodist premises… and by Methodist ministers, probationers or members.”

The vote does not automatically mean same-sex weddings are permitted, however, as the proposal will require a second vote at the July 2020 conference.

  • Wisdom gateways to financial fortune!

Welcome to July! I believe everyone of us must have been baptised into the grace to see God’s plan and purpose come through in our lives as individuals, through the diverse teachings and impartation of grace all through the month of June, 2019 and because whatever the Lord does shall be forever, my prayer is that everyone’s encounter shall continue to speak all through the days of our lives in Jesus’ name! Amen! Today, we shall focus on: Wisdom Gateways to Financial Fortune!

We discover from scriptures that even though God has ordained that we enjoy a life of abundance and command financial dominion, yet the Bible says: Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom (Proverbs 23:4). But nature abhors vacuum, if we are not to labour to be rich, then what are we to labour to do? Clearly, we are called to labour to be a blessing, so we can continue to be blessed …for it is more blessed to give, than to receive (Acts 20:35). For instance, it was in the heart of David the king to build God a house and God enriched him supernaturally. In the same vein, the Macedonian Church in spite of their poverty, their liberality launched them into financial dominion (2 Corinthians 8:1-3/9; 1Kings 8:17-18). All liberal souls both in Bible times and in our contemporary history enjoyed financial fortune and commanded financial dominion. Therefore:

ü         Chasing after wealth for the purpose of accumulation and consumption and not for distribution usually leads to a wreck (Luke 12:16-21; 1 Timothy 6:6-10).

    • Craving wealth by all means will lead to a crash (Joshua 7:20-25; 2 Kings 5:20-27; Matthew 27:3-5).
    • Craving to be a blessing will lead to a world of financial fortune (Job 29:4-17).
    • A commitment to promoting the Kingdom of God with one’s resources will culminate in financial dominion (1 Kings 8:17-18; 1 Chronicles 29:3-6).
    • Worshipping God with our resources will lead to a world of financial wonders (Genesis 22:1-18; Isaiah 51:1-3; Galatians 3:13-14; 1 Kings 3:3/13).
    • Commitment to being a blessing to the needy will bring any man into realms of financial fortune (Nehemiah 1:1-4, 2:1-10; Job 29:4-17).
    • Craving to help others while we are in need is key to a world of financial favour (2 Corinthians 8:1-7/11; Nehemiah 1:1-4, 2:1-10).

However, we must understand that wherever our commitment to being a blessing stops, that is where God’s blessings stop because we can never be blessed beyond our commitment to being a blessing. But, when we are positioned to being a blessing, God’s blessings never cease to flow in our lives.

How can we keep Financial Blessings Flowing?

    • Remain faithful in our covenant practice (Luke 19:15-17, 16:2/10).
    • Be good managers of God’s resources at our disposal (Matthew 25:14-30; Luke 16:11).
    • Be accountable (Luke 19:15, 16:1-12).
    • Avoid waste by maintaining financial discipline (Proverbs 13:4, 18:9).
    • Commit to the demand of budgeting (Luke 15:11-13).
    • Invest as appropriate for profiting (Luke 19:23).
    • Maintain financial integrity (Proverbs 13:11; Jeremiah 17:10-11; Zechariah 5:4).

We must understand that giving does not only guarantee access to financial or material returns; rather it is a covenant that qualifies to be defined as our Kingdom life insurance policy because it provides access to having all our needs met, including restoration of our health and healing miracles (Philippians 4:15-19; Proverbs 10:22). As it is written: Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness (Psalm 41:1-3).

When we give, we are entitled to full scale restoration of our health among others. Like the Widow of Zarephath who had her son restored to life on the platform of her seed (1 Kings 17:8-24). The Shunammite woman also had her son brought back to life through their family seed (2 Kings 4:8-17). The Centurion that built a synagogue enjoyed special attention from Christ for the healing of his servant (Luke 7:2-6/10). Oral Robert was dying of tuberculosis when he told his grandmother to check his suit pocket for his tithe because he didn’t want to die owing God. As a result, he was healed through that seed as a teenager and lived to be over ninety (90) years old.

In conclusion, giving with wisdom is a major gateway to financial fortune which secures special attention for us with God in the days of trouble and guarantees a healthy life. However, you can only access this level of giving if you are born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I know I am born again! For further reading, please get my books: Walking in Wisdom, The Wisdom that Works and Winning Wisdom. • Iroh consecrated Bishop

The General Overseer of Christ Unity Ministry, Oke Afa, Isolo, Lagos, Rev Oluwafem Iroh, has been consecrated as a Bishop.

His wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo Iroh, the Senior Pastor of the Christ Unity Ministry, was also ordained as an Apostle in a ceremony that attracted many servants of God across Nigeria and abroad last week.

The Bishopric Consecration was performed under the auspices of Restoration of Grace Fellowship International (ROGFI), Alabama, USA.

The new Bishop and the Apostle were consecrated by the Founder of ROFGI, Bishop Marcus Glessman in company of Bishop Mbamba Aristides, President, ROGFI from Cameroon).

They were also:  Executive Vice President ROGFI Kenya, Bishop Julius Agani; Bishop Inyang Asuquo, Bishop Francis Shopekan and a host of other servants of God.

Glessman described Bishop Iroh as one of the clergymen Nigeria should be proud of, adding that God sees in him good qualities of a leader and commitment to propagate the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

These virtues and sacrifices, he stated, informed his consecration as Bishop by his organisation.

He said the ROFGI has different branches across the world with the ordination of Iroh expected to give it a rooted presence in Nigeria.

To Bishop Iroh, a native of Sagamu in Ogun State, the new office is a call to serve God and humanity than he had been doing before.

He noted that he was reluctant to take the Bishopric office when he received the letter until he heard directly from God.

“I did not lobby for this; I think it was just the grace of God. This new role in the vineyard of God is for me to do more to serve God and humanity,” said Iroh, who was conferred with the title of Borokini of Lagos by the late Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, the Oba of Lagos in 1993.

He however relinquished the same title in 1998 after he was called to become a minister.

His wife told reporters: “I’m so happy for what God has done to further confirm His calling upon my life and what left for me to even do more to reach out to the world and tell them how wonderfully God is.

“Reward for a job well done is more work and I see this as a great opportunity to serve my God at this next level.”

  • Increasing moral decadence worries CWON, establishes boy- only school

The Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON) is concerned with increasing wave of moral decadence in the country.

It insisted government and citizens must rise to addressing it in the interest if future generation of Nigerians.

National President of the organisation, Barrister Cecilia Nwanneka Okolo, stated these in Abuja.

In view of its concerns, CWON has decided to establish an all- boy boarding school in the heart of Abuja to train children as a way of addressing the growing ills in the country.

She said the body discovered that a lot of attention has been given to girl child education, while leaving the boys at home, adding that “after training these girls, they come out and meet these untrained boys and the vicious circle continues”.

She disclosed the all- boy school, which is expected to take off in September 2019, will partner with parents for the education of their children.

She said: “The Catholic Women Organization Nigeria (CWON) has been in the forefront of qualitative education anchored on high moral standards.

‘’Over the years, the Organisation has established Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools across the length and breadth of Nigeria at all levels of the organisation.

“The CWON had identified the absence of moral and civil education as some of the root causes of moral decadence and other ills in the society, especially alter the takeover of schools by the government at the end of the civil war.

“It has been more than five decades since the negative consequence began to take root in our national psyche, with resultant moral decadence, indiscipline, unbridled greed, kidnapping, insecurity, lack of respect for human life, cultism and drug abuse, etc.

“Having built and developed the school apostolate at all levels, the National Body conceived the idea of having a college where we shall contribute to addressing these societal ills. The CWON dreamt of a college which would combine academic excellence with good moral upbringing. The Cor Mariae Boys College will therefore take off in September 2019, by God’s grace.”

She added: “It is common knowledge that the home is the first school and parents are the best teachers of their children.

‘’In a unique way, parents will largely contribute to the progress of their children at Cor Mariae College. In that respect, specific interventions will be designed for the benefit of the students, parents and the school.

“The school will partner with parents for the education of the pupils.

‘’We shall establish an advisory system whereby trained advisors basically follow up on a child’s formation morally, spiritually, academically, etc. A lot of emphasis will be placed on inculcation of virtues in the young ones.

“There will be Chaplaincy activities for fathers and for mothers. There will also b get together with parents who will be required to attend some mandatory programmes for their benefit and for their children’s benefit. All in all Cor Marie aims at holistic development of the student.”

  • The Elevation Church inspires teenagers at Navigate conference

The annual teenagers’ conference of The Elevation Church (TEC) tagged Navigate holds from July 15-19.

The theme of the conference designed to instill an upright character in teenagers by equipping them with invaluable skills and virtues to thrive in all facets of life is iRise.

It holds at the Pistis Conference Centre, Lekki.

Lead pastor and founder of The Elevation Church, Godman Akinlabi, said: “The failure in instilling in children the necessary values, virtues, character, life and vocational skills, whether deliberate or not, has created a detrimental impact on our society.

“The leadership and character gaps witnessed in adulthood, can mostly be traced to a person’s formative years.

“As a church, we strive to contribute to a brighter future for these teenagers, and by extension our nation, by inspiring and instilling the right set of values at this critical age”.

A statement by the church explained teenagers will be taught vital life skills to thrive in the 21st century such as personal branding, time management, people skills, leadership development, goal setting, etiquette and many more. They will also be taught career and vocational skills such as music, creative writing, photography, filmmaking, public speaking, fashion design, cooking, amongst others.

In a similar development, the Greater Lekki expression of TEC – located in the Sangotedo area of Lagos – will expand its service offerings into three services to accommodate more people from today at the T&T Events Centre, opposite Crown Estate, Sangotedo, Lagos.

Service times will be 7.30am, 9.30am and 11.30am respectively.

  • Church holds free medical outreach in Lagos community

I am grateful to the church because I have been suffering but no money to visit the hospital. I was tested and the doctors gave me drugs after the result came out.”

Those were the words of a student from Benue State, Aondohamba Samson, after undergoing a free medical outreach by Cedars House of Grace church in Agungi and Ajiran communities in Lekki area of Lagos.

As early 9 am, members of the communities thronged the open field that hosted the outreach.

Over 400 people from all works of life and religious beliefs benefited from the intervention.

About 20 medical workers, comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, who are members of the church, were on ground to attend to patients.

The beneficiaries, having been screened for the common diseases, were given drugs.

The experts made some referrals the cases that were beyond them.

The church also provided spiritual counseling for the residents.

The Senior Pastor of the church, Gbeminiyi Eboda, said the initiative was one of the ways of giving back to the society and helping government to prevent and combat different diseases.

He described the opportunity to give back to the communities as an honour and privilege.

“There is nothing that God blesses you with that you end with you,” he stated.

Eboda noted the church was out to minister to physical and spiritual needs of the people.

Eboda stated that real bible ministry must be targeted at the totality of the being –spirit, soul and body.

He explained: “With our spirit we contact God and the extra empirical world.

“With our soul we are able to relate intelligently with the material world and, our body gives the legality to function here on earth”.

Chairman, Planning Committee of the programme, Temitope James, said the church spent over a million naira to organise the event, despite the fact that all the experts were volunteers.

“We try to be as comprehensive as possible. We don’t just test people, but allow them to go to the general practitioners first, then after the consultations; the doctors will determine who need what kind of investigation.

“If we cannot carry out the diagnosis, we refer the patient to a diagnostic centre to have the right test done.

“Here, we have ophthalmologists who give free spectacles to patients with identified eye problems.

“We screen them for malaria, upper respiratory tract disease, hepatitis, high blood pressure, sugar level and the dental problem.

“We have seen over five cases of hypertension today. There was a 24-year-old young man that we screened who had a BP of 160/99 which is abnormal.

“Hypertension in a young adult is very rare, so we have to follow him up to know the possible causes and to give him a comprehensive treatment,” the medical practitioner stated.

He believes that the future of Nigeria robust health care system lies in primary health care.

He said that was the level where a lot of prevention takes place.

But he stated that it was sad that cases that supposed to have been taken care of at the primary health centres were found at the tertiary health institutions.

He added when the people are healthy it would increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country, and explained that there would be high productivity.

On how often anyone should go for a general health screening even without any symptom, James said people should have a yearly full medical evaluation done.

But he said the reason most people don’t carry out regular check-up was the fact that access to quality health care was nothing to write home about in Nigeria.

  • ‘How fallen ministers can be restored’

President of International Church Growth Ministries, Dr Francis Bola Akin-John, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on how gospel ministers can seek restoration after moral failure and other issues. Excerpts:

There have been outcries over recent moral failures on the parts of gospel ministers with many saying they constitute a slap on Christianity. Do you share this sentiment?

Well, I will look at it from two angles. One, yes it is a slap on the church to the extent that pastors are very crucial. Pastors are supposed to be above board and serve as credible examples. They are the Shepherds of the church. So when one of us falls, it is indeed a dent. What happens to one happens to all. People will say they are all immoral people.

The society will assume we are all the same. They will tend to believe we are all cheats. So, to that extent yes it is a slap. But on the other hands, these things are not new. There are always people who abuse their offices and privileges.

The Bible is awash with people who took advantage of people and their offices. It has always been there. Look at America, look at the Catholic Church. Look at world leaders. You find that leaders generally misbehave and abuse trust reposed in them.

Yes, the church should be an exception but it is sad that these things happen among us too.

But there are those who believe the victims should not have gone public with the dirty details to spare the church. Should these things be covered up?

No, I don’t believe there should be cover-up at all. When things like these happen, people express sentiments and opinions. But we should always go back to the Bible to check. In the Bible, God does not cover the sins of His servants.

Once you start dabbling into sin, God will warn you. But when you don’t repent, God will have no choice than to expose such persons. I always say that if you and I wrote the Bible, we would have yanked off the adulterous affairs of David. We would have spared Abraham and other fathers of faith.

When so-called servants of God dabble into sins; when sins become our way of life, we are going against the dictates of God. It is scriptural to cry out and expose sins. Anybody who is living in sins without repentance will be exposed. Nemesis will soon catch up with them.

We must not cover crimes, abuses or misbehaviours as Christians. We should expose them in love. We should not gloat over the falling of anybody but we should expose especially when the person is not repentant.

Besides, God can orchestrate the exposure. And that is the truth. It is all there in the Bible because God is not the respecter of anybody. If it is once, we can forgive and endure. But once it becomes persistent, it must be exposed.

If a man of God falls, what is the process for restoration?

Galatians 6:1 says if someone is found to have fallen, those standing should restore in the spirit of love, careful not to fall too. When a church leader falls morally, he must be rebuked and corrected. He must be disciplined and recalled from the pulpit by spiritual fathers. That is where accountability and mentorship come in.

That is why a Pastor must have a Pastor that he answers to. He must have a board that he answers to. When the evidence becomes clear that he is at fault, he should be disciplined. It is not a discipline to destroy but to seek the face of God and reconcile with those who have been abused.

You remember Ted Haggard fell into sin and he was covering it up until somebody called in during a live show to say ‘look, I am your male prostitute’. He denied it but the person went on to provide concrete evidence.

Ted Haggard’s spiritual father went to his church the following week and withdrew him from the pulpit. He gave him the process of restoration and started watching him. Haggard was humble enough to go through the process. Today, he is back in ministry though not in that church. He has founded another church. That is how it should be.

The only problem we have is we have lots of pastors who claim someone is their spiritual fathers but do not submit to their authorities. When they fall into errors, they don’t submit themselves to be corrected and restored.

You see a situation where a pastor divorces and marries another woman and still continues on the pulpit. He is not remorseful but carries on as if nothing has happened. They have spiritual fathers that do not call them to order. They just pay their tithes and offerings to them.

There are pastors that sleep around. They have to stop preaching. Pastors that have children out of wedlock must also stop preaching. What they are doing negate the scriptures. They must demonstrate they believe in what they preach.

They must stop preaching and submit to discipline for restoration. I have heard people saying too that only Christianity fights its wounded soldiers. That is a very wicked statement. If a soldier is wounded in battles and you offer to help and the wounded soldier says he is not interested, what do you do?

I have seen situations like that a lot. A pastor keeps sleeping around and keeps saying ‘you cannot discipline me. You are just my spiritual father’. What do you do to such men? We should submit ourselves to authorities. They must withdraw from the pulpit until they can prove they have repented. They must go back to God for restoration until their weaknesses are dealt with. Then they can turn back and preach the gospel. That is how to bring honour and integrity to the pulpit. That is when the society can respect us that we are real and representatives of Christ.

Do moral failures discredit the body of Christ?

To me, it is sad and unfortunate but it has happened all over again. I just hope this can bring revival. But this does not discredit the church at all. We cannot discredit Christ, who says I will build my church and the gate of hell will not prevail over it. It is only men that do not follow Jesus and abuse their offices, taking advantages of followers that are discredited.

God will continue to use men and do wonders. That is why those of us who call ourselves His servants must be careful. We cannot discredit God. We can only discredit ourselves. Once we don’t submit to the leading of God, we will destroy our names. God has people in secret loyal to Him.

We have to be careful that we do not abuse our offices and privileges. We must never molest the women, men and children. We must not use prophecies to hoodwink rich men. We must be careful to be found faithful by men and God.

  • COZA: Run away from evil, Adeboye advises youths

    Adeyinka Akintunde

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has called on youths to stay away from all forms of evil and lusts.

He noted that there is no way a man can run away from the evil he has committed, no matter how long he has done it.

He said this at the Redemption Camp during the July 2019 Holy Ghost Service of the church.

In the programme tagged “Swimming in Glory, Part 7 – Born to be great”, the cleric noted that when a woman accuses a man of an offence, nobody would be interested in the defense the man wants to offer.

He mentioned no names, but he spoke against the background of recent allegation against Biodun Fatoyinbo, senior pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA).

A celebrity photographer, Busola Dakolo had gone public with an allegation that Fatoyinbo raped her at her parents’ residence in Ilorin when she was only 16. The allegation had drawn flanks from diverse quarters, forcing Fatoyinbo to “step down” from his position.

Adeboye said: “You must abstain from every appearance of evil. The elders say “what you are not going to eat, don’t smell.

“It is written, There is nothing hidden that will not come to the open. Sooner or later, your sins will find you out.

“If you have given your life to Jesus, and you continue in sin under the guise of grace, your sin will find you out.

“When a woman accuses you of something, nobody is going to listen to you; they will listen to the woman. When they ask for witness, she will say ‘do they call people to such a thing?’

“The same bible that says, resist the devil and he will flee is the same bible that said when you find yourself facing youthful lust, you should flee.

Reacting to those that call him old-fashioned, the general overseer said: “I agree that I am old-fashioned. That is what they called me when I said that I will never have a private secretary who is a woman.

“I was ordained in 1975 and I am still surviving. It is better to be old-fashioned and live than to be modern and die.”

The general overseer had previously advised that everyone should always pray that God will have mercy on Nigeria so the shedding of innocent blood will end, noting that God stopped the Ebola virus in the country because at that time, “the cup of Nigeria was not yet full.”

He announced that the church would be holding its annual convention from 5th to 11th August, 2019 with the theme, “And God said”
