  • African Church Agege gets new Baba Ijo, chiefs

The African Church Saviour’s Cathedral, Agege Lagos has  installed a new Baba Ijo and chiefs.

The church also confered Christian chieftaincy titles on its industrious members.

Chairman, installation Committee, Barr (Sir) OlusholaAbanikanda said the honour was to appreciate members for years of selfless services in God’s vineyard.

“All the new chiefs are men and women of excellence who have been putting on display their talent, time and treasure.

“We particularly want to single out for recognition the office of Baba Ijo. It is the pivot and the point of contact for other male chiefs and menfolks in the church,” he explained.

He said the enthronement of a new Baba Ijo often signifies the beginning of a new era of anticipated dreams, expectations and goals.

In his sermon, the Bishop of Agege Diocese, RT REV. Hezekiah Adetoro (JP) charged the new Baba Ijo and other chiefs to support and initiate programmes for the welfare of indigents in the society.

He described the new chiefs as beacons of hope for the hopeless and light for those still wallowing in darkness.

Reading from 1Timothy 5: 17-22, Adetoro charged them to demonstrate exemplary leadership quality and commitment to the work of God.

He said they should see their new positions as a call to serve and do more in propagating the gospels as well as lending helping hands to the less privilege around them.

The new baba Ijo, Elder Adisa Oluga (JP) expressed appreciation to the church for considering him worthy of the honour.

Oluga, who is also the Asiwaju of Oluga Kingdom in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State, urged Christians in the country to continue to pray for peace and stability of the nation.

  • What is in the word that heals? (2)

In last week’s edition, we saw Jesus identified Himself as the Great Physician and how He can heal all manner of sicknesses and diseases –including raising the dead, by His Word (Jeremiah 8:22; Matthew 4:23; 9:12-35; John 11:40-44; Revelation 1:18).

We also discover from scriptures that every redeemed child of God has access to the revelation from God’s Word that guarantees our healing. That is why the Bible says that it is given to us to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God. It is the degree of our access to God’s Word that determines our level of dominion over sicknesses and diseases (Ezekiel 37:1-14; Matthew 13:11; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

Unfortunately, there are many believers today, who do not know Jesus as the Great Physician, or His capacity to heal all manner of afflictions. Neither do they know the price that He paid to guarantee their right to total health. This is why God said that believers are taken into captivity and destroyed –not by the devil, but their lack of knowledge (Isaiah 5:13; Hosea 4:6; John 8:32).

In this week’s edition, we shall explore, what is in the Word that heals?

    • God’s Word is medicinal: Every time the light (revelation) from the Word breaks forth in our hearts, our health supernaturally springs up because God’s medicinal and curative virtue resides in His Word. As it is written: Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rearward (Isaiah 58:8; see also Psalms 119:130; Proverbs 4:20-22).

There is a very clear illustration in scriptures of how revelation destroys the frustration of sicknesses and diseases. It is written: His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth (Job 33:21-25).

We must understand that God’s Word does not only teach us principles, but also empowers us to walk in the reality of our inheritances, which include total health.

    • The Word of God is surgical: God’s Word carries surgical virtue that is able to open up any part of our bodies, remove the source of sickness and disease, then, stitch us again to live healthy lives. Remember the Bible says: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

“Sharper” and “Piercing” here connotes the surgical nature of the Word. This scripture helps us to understand that God’s Word has all-round healing capacity to cut through and quicken our spirit, soul, body, bone and even the marrow to remove whatever is tormenting us. Furthermore, God is the Super Surgeon, Who has the surgical knife of the Word which He uses to operate on His children. He used that knife to pierce the side of Adam, brought out a rib to make Eve and stitched him in such a way that no recuperation was required.

Therefore, whatever is not curable in our bodies can be repaired by the surgical knife of God’s Word.

    • God’s Word is creative: God’s Word has unlimited capacity and ability to re-create whatever part of our body is missing or stolen by the devil. That means, whatever is incurable in our body, is repairable; if it irreparable, then, it is replaceable by the creative treasure in the Word. The Bible says: Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear (Hebrews 11:3).

In conclusion, we must recognise that healing is part and parcel of our redemptive package; thus, sickness is not our portion in Christ Jesus (2 Peter 1:4).

However, we must understand that until the light in the Word enters us, the powers of darkness will not step out. This is because only the revelation of the healing virtues we encounter from the Word can terminate the frustrations of sicknesses and diseases like a dream of the night. Henceforth, as you encounter God’s Word, I pray that your total and incontestable liberty from every form of sickness and disease be established forever in the name of Jesus Christ.

Furthermore, remember that healing is God’s children’s bread. Thus, until you become a child of God by accepting Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, you cannot access the healing virtues in His Word. That is what being born again means. If you are not born again yet, you can do so by saying this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!” For further reading, please get my books: Keys to Divine Health, The Miracle Meal, Fulfilling your days.

  • Baptist cleric canvases servant-leadership model

    Baptist cleric canvases servant-leadership model

Church leaders must operate as servants to be able to transform lives and please God.

This was the submission of President Lagos West Baptist Conference, Rev Dr Julius Adeniji.

He spoke at the inagural assembly of the Peak Leadership Forum in Lagos last week.

Adeniji said servant-leadership is the best model that will deliver optimum results in the business of soul winning and transformation of lives.

He said: “Servant leadership is the crux of faithwalk leadership, as effectiveness and achievement are measured by the quality of service a leader puts in his organisation.

“ A leader must put first the interest of the people they serve at heart and also have a clear vision in their heads.

“The primary goal of a good leader should be in the best interest of those they are leading and they gain personal satisfaction by observing the growth and developmentof those they are serving.”

He cautioned against vanities, pride, ego and greed among church leaders, saying they must commit to serving the flocks under them.

  • Love…the most excellent way (8)

The topic love is inexhaustible, there is so much to know and only God will teach us all we need to know about love and the grace to apply them.

A certain lawyer asked Jesus a question, though his motive was to test Him, he asked “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “what does the law of Moses say? So he answered and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.” And Jesus said to him you have answered rightly; do this and you will live” The man wanting to justify his lack of love for some kinds of people, asked “who is my neighbour?” Jesus replied with an illustration: “A certain man going on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a Jewish priest came along; and when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Levite (a Jewish Temple-assistant) walked over and looked at him lying there, but then went on. But a despised Samaritan (the ones seen as having a polluted religion) came along and when he saw him had compassion, so he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine; and set him on his donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he gave the inn keeper two denarii and said ‘take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ “So which of these do you think was neighbour to him who fell among the thieves?” And the lawyer said, “he who showed mercy on him, and Jesus said to him, “GO AND DO LIKEWISE”

You see, irrespective of our differences- religion, tribe, culture, tradition, social status etc. We are to show love to all. Your actions show who you are and the God you worship. If you serve the living God, then you will love for God is love. A young girl once said to me that she hated a certain group of people; insinuating an alliance to dislike them because of their behaviour. She was shocked when I said to her that I love them, teaching her that God doesn’t want us to hate anybody irrespective of our differences. Even if someone we know isn’t behaving the right way, our duty is to pray continuously for the person to change and never get tired of praying (remember love suffers long; it’s very patient and doesn’t give up easily), also counsel such in love. Hatred can lead to violence and we are not to give room to violence (violence is never a solution to issues, it will rather fuel it), don’t join in evil behaviours but live in love for love doesn’t rejoice in evil but rejoices in the truth.

If you truly want to live eternal life in heaven, then show love…

“When Jesus comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.

Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

The righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

You see, Jesus teaches us THE MOST EXCELLENT WAY to live; a way leading to heaven at last.

To be able to live in love we need first to accept God’s son Jesus Christ who He sent to set us free from sin, teaching and helping us to live a life pleasing to Him; a life of true, unconditional, undying and unending love. Love perfects all things leading us to eternal life in heaven.

So dear friends, if you truly love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and you love your neighbour as yourself, it will show in your good works. Good works is a result of a good heart, a godly heart given only by Jesus.

Whether Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba…Teach love, speak love and show love. Say No to hatred and No to violence.

  • ‘How change agenda can work’

    ‘How change agenda can work’

Regional Secretary of International Fellowship of Evangelical Students in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa (IFES-EPSA), Rev Gideon Para Mallam, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on the current administration and state of the nation. Excerpts:

You were one of the clerics that supported the change of government in 2015. Would you say your decision has been justified based on the realities on ground today?

2015 was a year in which any sane Nigerian knew that change was the more expedient path to advocate and go if the nation was to be salvaged from the rampaging violence of the insurgent Boko Haram terrorist group.

Stemming the tide of corruption which was just too rampant in government at the time required a new direction and leadership change. Such change is healthy for our democracy.

Let me quickly add that if the current APC government fails to deliver, come 2019, I will equally support their ouster through a normal democratic process, credible elections.

Politicians are taking Nigerians for a ride too much and we the people must teach them lessons to bring them back to their political and normal senses.

What I did in 2015 was nothing personal but things were not moving in the right direction for the country than hence my support the agenda for change.

Where would you say this administration is getting it right and what needs to be changed?

I still believe the current campaign against corruption should continue but this needs to be done is such a way as to not make it look like a selective affair.

Also, the seriousness with which this administration is tackling the terrorism challenge and other insurgencies should be supported. We must use force in some instances and in others find ways to dialogue and negotiate a settlement without compromise or mortgaging the future of our children.

But this administration has been very unimpressive in the way it is tackling the whole question of ravaging Fulani herdsmen who are today marauding and terrorising the nation especially the Middle Belt minorities. Why is the President always silent? Does he hate the Middle Belt people so much as to note care what happens to them?

Our President’s silence is not only disturbing and unfortunate but it appears the herdsmen are acting as if they are emboldened to do maximum damage in wasting lives around the nation.

Buhari also needs to double intentional response and efforts on the economic fronts. Economic woes have no ethnic color or religious distinction whether you are Bachama in Adamawa State or Jaba in Kaduna State, a Muslim in Zamfara State or a Christian from Warri, we all suffer the present economic bite in Nigeria.

How is your assessment of the ongoing anti-corruption war?

I personally find it difficult, given the arrests and some of the EFCC celebrated. Cases of corruption are mostly those of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Are thesethe only faces of corruption in Nigeria today? I have said this over and over again that the fight against corruption should be made a Nigerian fight and not just a Buhari fight, if this is to succeed and make some appreciable impact in society which will outlive any administration.

The President Buhari as a one-man anti-corruption hero approach won’t go far enough. There is no doubt that he has been championing the fight against corruption but I am convinced that there are many more such champions in Nigeria.

The government needs to fish out and bring them on board. So far, one is not seeing that happening. As an ethnically diverse and multi-religious nation, we need to rid ourselves of the false mentality that there exists one ‘super-hero’ who can succeed as a loner in winning the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

I am afraid, the problems confronting Nigeria are myriad and the sooner even the APC government know that they alone cannot solve these, the better.

How can Nigerians beat the biting economic recession?

We need win the recession challenge by changing our economic lifestyles from a consuming nation, which imports virtually everything under the sun to focus more on intentionally promoting local manufacturing. To me, these are the real challenges our President should address

Let this nation wisely prioritise by focusing on and developing the agricultural sector. The Middle Belt can successfully be the breadbasket of Nigeria. There is need to guard and protect the Middle Belt Savannah region instead of turning it into the present killing fields it is fast becoming.

The political danger of land-grabbing and the attendant consequences of endless generational war need to be addressed if agriculture is to be pursued also.

The present emerging phenomenon of land-grabbing is a dangerous development which will be a generational conflict. It’s worse than any insurgency conflicts. Let’s learn fast from Europe. It’s never too late.

President Buhari needs to buckle up otherwise it will go down in history that he was Nigeria’s President during whose time, Nigeria moved from being the largest economy in Africa as at 2015, into recession in 2016.

Visionary appointment of able hands especially those who will turn the tide of our economic woes is much needed instead of excuses and explanations which we keep getting.

One year is enough for some initial positive signs of where we are going economically to signpost. I read how our Minister of Finance announced that Nigeria is now in official recession with a caveat that it is not just Nigeria, but other countries too.

I found that very strange, why do we have to justify a recession instead of providing specific steps on how we could come out of it? We all know the solutions are not easy to come by but how we explain things to the public is critical.

Is there still hope for Nigeria based on rising militancy?

I am essentially saying that there is hope for Nigeria in stemming the tide and coming out of the present rising militancy in the nation.

The rising tide of not just militancy but insurgency can also still be addressed through providing social justice and good governance. Many have cried for the restructuring of Nigeria and to my mind such cries should not be ignored.

As for the insurgency posed by Boko Haram, this represents not just a home but global challenge. This is being addressed  but it won’t be easy to eradicate this totally due to the Islamic ideology of those who seek to Islamise Nigeria by force of arms. Hence the success of the President in fighting Boko Haram being witnessed at moment needs to be commended and encouraged.

But on the other hand, if you look at most of the demands of other militant groups in this nation, the key cause has largely been social injustice. The President told this nation some weeks ago that he is negotiating a possible settlement with the Niger Delta militants. This is a positive step.

My appeal to our President is for him to kindly remember the plight and suffering of other ethnic nationalities in Nigerian who have longed cried for social justice and marginalization. As a nation, we do not always need to wait until a group is pushed to the wall and be tempted to resort to militant means of armed struggles before we enter into negotiation with them.

A listening President can make a huge difference in the way Nigerians are governed. Will President Buhari be that listening President as part of stemming the tide of rising militancy in Nigeria?

  • Recession: Nigeria needs divine bailouts, says Okoroafor

Recession: Nigeria needs divine bailouts, says Okoroafor

General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Nigeria Rev Chidi Okoroafor yesterday declared Nigeria needs complete divine bailout to emerge from the biting economic recession.

The recession, he said, is beyond economic explanations and solutions.

Okoroafor said only God can rescue Nigeria out of the doldrums.

He stated this in a chat with our correspondent after the three-day South West Ministers’ conference at the Bethel camp, KM 46 Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

He also called on churches and Christians to pray vigorously for recovery of nation’s economic, stating that it has been seriously battered to the point that no solution looks possible.

According to him: “I spoke with somebody who should know if there was hope and he said only God can bail us out.

“No matter economic or human expertise, the recession will not go. We need to move the hands of God to intervene in the matter.”

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari, governors and the economic team to fish for competent hands across the nation that can salvage the situation.

Such persons, he said, might be in opposition parties but should be bought on board for creative ideas that will rescue the nation.

Okoroafor said: “Wisdom has no residential address. The wisdom needed to fix this country is already here. It is not necessarily in the presidency.

“You don’t need to be partisan to move the nation forward because the wisdom that will move the nation forward may be in members of the opposition party.”

He also advised the federal government to adopt the dialogue option with members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to address their grievances.

Dialogue, he said, may change the hearts of members of such violent groups.

No fewer than 1500 ministers of the church from states in the South west expressed support for Okoroafor.

In a communique after the conference, the ministers said: “The 18 administrative units have consistently maintained loyalty to the General Council under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Chidi Okoroafor and promise to continue on the same platform.”

  • What is in the word that heals?

From scriptures, we discover that sicknesses and diseases have spiritual roots and are raw oppressions of the devil. For instance, when Peter’s mother-in-law was plagued with fever, the Bible records that Jesus rebuked the fever, it left her and immediately she arose and ministered unto them (Luke 4:38-39; see also Matthew 8:14-17Mark 1:29-34).

That means it was not mere malaria, but a satanic oppression from the pit of hell. That is why there are many sicknesses and diseases in the world today that medical expertise cannot cure.

Again, the Bible says: The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered? (Jeremiah 8:20-22).

from the above scripture, we understand that God is hurt when we are hurt. For instance, it is common knowledge that any parent whose child is sick, will feel the sickness more than the child; particularly, the little ones, who cry because they can’t explain where the pain is. In the same vein, God, our heavenly Father, is always touched by our infirmities (Hebrews 4:15).

That is why the Bible says that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and power, Who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil because God was with him (Acts 10:38).

Furthermore, the Bible says: And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people (Matthew 4:23; see also Matthew 9:35).

That means Jesus has the capacity to heal all manner of sicknesses and diseases, and none can stand His authority, including death. Speaking to the Jews, who sought to kill Him, Jesus said, among others: Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live (John 5:25).

We saw this healing virtue flow when Jesus raised the dead daughter of a ruler and Lazarus, who was dead for four days. That is why Jesus Christ identified Himself as the Great Physician. His capacity to make whole is unlimited, instant, total and complete. It is written: But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Matthew 9:12-13; see also Jeremiah 8:22; Matthew 9:24-25; John 11:40-44; Revelation 1:18).

However, we must recognise that Jesus, the Great Physician, heals largely by His Word, which is the Balm in Gilead. In other words, the healing virtue of Christ is domiciled in His Word. Remember, the Bible says that Jesus sent His Word to heal and deliver everyone from destruction. We also saw in scriptures how Jesus was teaching on a certain day and the power of God oozed forth from His Word and healed the sick. The reason for this is that every affliction is an operation of the power of darkness, and God’s Word is the light that illuminates us to dominate and dispel them cheaply. As we all know, no matter the degree of darkness, at the appearance of light, it surrenders; as light dominates absolutely and unquestionably (Psalms 119:130; Jeremiah 8:20-22; Ezekiel 2:2; Ephesians 6:12-15; Luke 5:17, 22:52-53; John 1:1-5, 9; 5:25; 6:63).

In July 1979, while reading one of Kenneth Hagin’s books titled, 7 Keys to Divine Healing in the city of Zaria, I discovered that total health is my right in redemption. From that book, I saw that Jesus took my infirmities, bore my sicknesses and carried them on His head; so, I screamed saying, “I can never be sick!” Furthermore, I saw Him take my place in sickness and disease, the same way He did for Barabbas, who went home free. That encounter liberated me forever! Moreover, I grew up in the village and I understand that when you take luggage from an old man coming from the farm, he walks home free. In the same way, I saw that Jesus took the luggage from my head as I returned from the farm of sickness and disease. Therefore, at the instance of the light of the Word, I declare an end to every assault on your health today!

Are you born again? This means, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord? If you haven’t, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • ‘Nigeria is overdue for restructuring’

    ‘Nigeria is overdue for restructuring’

Presiding Pastor of Living spring Chapel International Lagos, Pastor Femi Emmanuel spoke with Sunday Oguntola on why restructuring has become too important for the nation to ignore. Excerpts:

What’s your reading of the state of the nation?

It’s pathetic and we are retrogressing. We are losing grip; everything is in abeyance. The uncertainty is not what we desired and voted for. The government of the day seems to have lost grip of what governance is all about and the citizens are suffering.

The economy is down; naira is in a free fall and nothing is moving. The whole states are in redundancy mode; states cannot pay salaries; business men are crying; naira value is dead and its falling. Nobody knows where it would stop and of course when you have problem with the currency of a nation, it affects everybody.

    So you support restructuring?

    I support it seriously.

What type of restructuring do you support because restructuring means different thing to different people?

The restructuring we are talking about is that Nigeria with over 250 ethnic nationalities forge together in a marriage of convenience cannot continue like there. There are cries from different zones with different tribes calling for self-actualisation.

If we are going to have federalism, let it be true federalism and I think the national conference of 2014 will help us. It is amazing to me that the president is saying he has not even touched it and the document will gather dust on the shelves.

That is unfortunate because it is so clear that this nation cannot continue this way. So the restructuring I have in mind is the national conference’s blue print. We may not be able to accept all the recommendations there but there are good recommendations we cannot overlook.

We can’t accept recommendations like 18 additional states when the existing states can’t even survive but there are good ones. Community policing, state police and each state generating their resources, weaker central and more powers to the federating units are necessary to embrace. We can’t continue like this. The last administration ended up using 80 percent of the resources to pay salaries. How do you survive with that?

But people say we have the National Assembly there to determine these issues. Why do we need a special conference to decide on these?

The truth is democracy especially, the presidential system, if I want to be very frank with you, is not meant for us. We can’t run it. It’s meant for the mature minds; itsmeant for people who are humane; its meant for people who value integrity and their names.

It’s not for these corrupt thieving leaders we have. Everybody wants what he can steal. Look at the huge money stolen from the system. It’s surprising that Nigeria could be sustained till today. You remember was it not President Ibrahim Babangida that said he was surprised our economy hasn’t collapsed?

He’s an insider. He saw the looting that was going on. How could you could be stealing from the store and you are not replacing the goods? It will soon finish. I had expected that we would come to this point if corruption is not checked; corruption cannot be checked with the kind of system we are playing so to my mind, presidential system of government is not for us.

    So what is for us?

We have to go to parliamentary and regional. That’s the truth. Let’s reduce the size of the government so we can have money to develop infrastructure and give people decent lives. President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration ended up borrowing to pay salaries. They bought out money and shared it. How canany system survive that?

When I was Oyo Deputy Speaker, I moved the motion that we should return to regional government and people laughed. You see the truth is our political leaders are feeding us with tribal sentiments. One of the issues I had with former Senate President David Mark was that deception of creating more states when those we have are not even viable.

He played on people’s emotions because we are over 250 tribes and we are suspicious of each other. We just want state for state’s sake so that it could be our own son, our own daughter there. We are not thinking of the resources to sustain the states and he was encouraging it big time.

You remember there was this unending visit to all tribes and he was saying ‘we would give you states; we would give you states’ when he knew he was deceiving the people. I mean leaders don’t do that. Leaders don’t play on people’s intelligence, play on their ignorance, play on their sentiments to just sustain their seats and keep sucking the money. Where would it end?

So this democracy presidential system of governance is not sustainable. There is the Nigeria factor. There is this tribal, religious card we play once we get into public office.

But when would we ever get over the sentiment?

We would never get over it

Why can’t we get over it?

We are not wired that way. Remember what is called Nigeria is a contraption. It is a lie. We are never the same people. This nation is never one. It was Lord Lugard’s creation. The British people saw we were never one but forcefully merged us. Remember the north was having indirect rule.

They studied us and they knew we are not of the same people and how do you merge people that don’t see thing the same way with different values, orientations and mindsets? There’s no way it has never worked.

It’s not working and it would not work because we are never the same people. We don’t have the same values. We are not seeing things the same way.

So we cannot eliminate that system?

If we are not careful and if we didn’t restructure the way we have explained it, we are heading for Dooms Day because we are not of the same people. So, let people who have the same history, background and orientation be together. I mean let us have a United State of Nigeria like we have in USA.

But the fear is that we go for a referendum, people will choose to go their different ways

It’s not possible because the military will still be federal. We would have stronger federating units with weaker centre. That is the only way we can handle these agitations for self- determination.

Niger Delta Avengers and IPOB for instance can have their resources to themselves and use it for their regional development. They then send a percentage to the centre. Let’s have aweaker centre and stronger constituents.

The southwest can generate agriculture. We are good in education and you sell what you have. What does Great Britain produce? For instance, Sweden has nothing to produce but they are living. They are catering for their people. Intellectual product is there. Agriculture is there.

The present system has made everyone lazy. How can a country have a mono product? A product whose price you can’t control?look at the oil price, the oil price is fallen and that is what we all depend on. It’s unfortunate.

    So, Nigeria must restructure?

We have to. If we don’t do it peacefully, we would do it by force. The government has lost grip. Do you see the government in control of anything? It’s all fire-fighting approach. We can’t stop kidnapping. We can’t stop pipe bursting every day. The oil is down. We can’t fix electricity; we can’t fix road. Do you think we can continue like this for the next 10 years?

Can you imagine it? Except something definite is done, except something is done to reverse this negative trend, where do you think we would be in the next 10 years? Would there be anything call Nigeria again?

That is why the earlier the government of the day swallows their pride, the earlier they face reality and say we can’t continue like this. Let us agree on certain issues and go for referendum because that is the most peaceful way.

So, we must get out of the logjam?

We must get out of it because we are heading for the rock.

Are you optimistic that we would get out of this?

I am optimistic if the government of the day would listen. They should return to the 2014 National Conference documents to move forward. I believe that conference was divine though Jonathan might have had hidden agenda too. But look at the huge money we spent.

Whether Jonathan had a hidden agenda or not, we were fairly represented; what we have in the National Assembly is not a representation of the people. An average member of the National Assembly is a stooge. An average member of the National Assembly bought his way there. So, they cannot make laws that will benefit us but there paymasters.

  • ‘Fasting, living apart destroying Christian homes’

Long fasting has destroyed many Christian families, a cleric, DrFezie Nnaji, has pointed out.

He said a situation where Christian couples deprive themselves of sex because of long fasting is not only unwholesome but also unbiblical.

Addressing reporters in Lagos last week, Nnaji lamented the homes of many great men of God are suffering as a result of long fasting.

He said Christians who hide under the pretence of fasting to deny their spouses sex are hurting God and the institution of marriage.

According to him:  “When you deprive your spouse sex, you are giving room for the devil to come in because suspicion will set in.”

Nnaji, who also warned against couples living apart, said such development amounts to tempting God.

“If you are living together and you follow your spouse wherever he goes, there is absolute trust,” he stated, adding “homes are tearing apart because people are not wise.”

Nnaji recalled a minister of God always travelling for mission works, leaving his wife alone.

The wife, he stated, confided in one of his friends she got a boy in the neighbourhood to satisfy her sexual needs.

He said Christian couples must be wise and committed to making their home a success.
