  • Comedians light up #HarvestersUnwind

It was billed for 4pm but families started arriving as early as 2pm. By 3pm, the expanded auditorium of Harvesters International Christian Centre was already overflowing. Worshippers that attended the four services of the church refused to go home.

They sat in groups eagerly awaiting the kick-off of the much-anticipated Comedy, Dance and Music event: “Unwind with Emeka Smith and friends”. By 3:30pm, the two auditoriums of the church, the galleries and adjoining streets had been filled up; organisers had to regrettably turned back guests.

When the show finally started, guests had been thrown into a frenzy. Young families, some with kids, were transfixed on the colourful rostrum. They had come to unwind after a tedious work week.

Popular comedian, Emeka Smith, who is a member of the church, said he decided to invite his friends in the industry over to offer young families in Lagos a “platform to laugh, mingle and unwind.” He said the fast pace of a cosmopolitan city like Lagos has forced families to drift apart, sparing no time for rejuvenation.

“All we have got is our families. God forbids anything goes wrong but we have got nobody apart from God and our families. So, we have to treasure that great asset and create time to unwind in God’s presence with holy laughter,” he explained.

Emeka Smith started bringing upstage the A-list comedians at hand one after the other: AY, Omo Baba, Funny Bone, Larry Jay, Ajebo and a dancing group, D Flex.

The comedians got down to business and cracked ribs effortlessly. Husbands and wives exchanged banters; seeing themselves in a new light. Their kids joined in the euphoria, revealing their milk teeth.

Harvesters also engaged the social media as part of preserving the show’s memories: guests were encouraged to take selfies and tweet with the hashtag #Harvestersunwind. It trended on twitter for another two days with many intriguing pictures.

But the show was not just about comedy and dancing, many attendees had the wonderful opportunity of encountering the Change that Harvesters stands for. Pitching for change, Harvesters Lekki Centre Resident Pastor, Deji Agboade, opined that the fun the young families just had will be incomparable with the eternal comfort that awaits them in heaven.

Agboade appealed to them to turn over their lives to God, saying God has the willingness and capacity to change their stories for good here on earth and in the hereafter. “If you give God a chance in your life, He will turn it around and make it better than you can imagine,” he stressed.

Harvesters Executive Pastor, Dayo Ogunrombi, said the show was the church’s way of “having fun in an unusual environment.” He said Unwind was designed to be appealing to the unchurched and hopefully soften their hearts to God.

Harvester’s Senior Pastor, Bolaji Idowu, said the show was crafted to emphasise the family-friendly disposition of the church. “Our mission is influence,” he began. “We desire to create a setting for families to bond and thrive. That is why young families find this place irresistible.”

This, he explained, is responsible for the astronomical growth of the church. While its Gbagada headquarters hold four services every Sunday, the third service of its Lekki centre is kicking off in September. The Ikeja Centre is also opening in the same month to accommodate the yearning of young families for an atmosphere filled with love and God.

Idowu said: “Our greatest asset is love. We love people to a fault here. We tell them to come the way they are and God will turn their lives around. We are heavy on love and that is why we are becoming a safe haven for young families.”

  • Experiencing the wonders of settlement in the word!

Welcome to your regular column. From scriptures, we understand that encounter with God’s Word is the master key to a world of all-round settlement. For instance, until Joseph’s word came, the Word of the Lord tried him. But after his word came, the king sent for him, loosed and settled him in a grand style. We also saw how God sent His Word into Jacob, bringing him out of the ordeal of his life. It is also said that God sent His Word to settle our health issues and deliver us from every form of destructions (Psalm 105:19-22, Isaiah 9:8, Psalm 107:20; 1 Peter 5:10; John 10:1).

This helps us to know that we are redeemed to live pressure-free, anguish-free and distress-free lives. In the light of this, we are not permitted to live under pressure; at least, not beyond a while, because every issue of long continuance is a curse. As it is written: Then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. But thank God Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, which includes that of any long continuance (Deuteronomy 28:58-59; Isaiah 10:25; Galatians 3:13-14).

Therefore, any issue beyond a moment is anti-covenant; it is not permitted and must be resisted (2 Corinthian 4: 17).

What is a While or a Moment?

    • A moment connotes ‘Now’: As it is written: For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).
    • It also connotes ‘Today’: As stated above, “…Behold, today is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Furthermore, the Word says: Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even today do I declare that I will render double unto thee. That means there is a ‘today settlement’ agenda (Zechariah 9:12).
    • Overnight:It is written: For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning (Psalm 30:5). This signifies an overnight settlement.
    • Three days: It is written in Hosea 6:2: After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight.

In the light of these, we must understand that when God settles us by His Word, no devil can unsettle us.

Furthermore, there is a Covenant Way Out

We must recognize that we serve a covenant-keeping God. As it is written, My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips (Psalms 89:34).

    What is a Covenant?

In our context, a covenant can be defined as fulfilling the conditions attached to any promise of scriptures so we can have them fulfilled in our lives.Any time we fulfil the conditions attached to any promise, God’s integrity is committed to perform. The Bible is not a Book of promises; it is a Book of covenants. That’s why it is called the Old and New Testaments. Note that Testament also means Covenant. However, we must understand that every provision of scripture places a demand on us to access them. This is why Christianity is a faith of responsibility.

Remember, it is written: Whatever He tells you to do, do it. For instance, salvation is free, but it takes our repentance to access it. In like manner, concerning the subject of settlement, the Bible says: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light(Matthew 11:28-30).

There is what to learn and know, to enter into His rest. As it is written:The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace (Isaiah 59:8).

From the above scripture, there is the way of peace that must be learnt, before we can be established in God’s peace and it is through We must bear the yoke of learning by loving the Word of God, which in turn settles us (Psalm 119:165).

Friend, we must understand that until we are born again, we are cannot access the realms of settlement. Are you born again? You can allow Jesus Christ to take the wheels in your situations as your Lord and Saviour? Say this prayer of faith:”Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • ‘Our church‘ll never marry same-sex couples’

The presiding pastor of Dominion International Centre, Houston Texas, Pastor Toye Ademola, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on the same-sex challenge in America and sundry issues. Excerpts:

You have been in Nigeria for a few weeks. What feelings have you been nursing?

It’s been wonderful and I love coming back to Nigeria. The Spirit here is great and I thank God for what churches here are doing. It’s good to be back at home and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Anytime I come back, I am always challenged because this land is anointed. The move of God is mighty upon this country. The Lord has been helping us to be solid ambassadors of Jesus Christ in the United States of America through the solid foundation we got here.

Well, you said Nigeria is blessed but many say Nigeria is cursed and that is why we are still not moving forward. Is Nigeria cursed?

No, Nigeria is not cursed. Nigeria can’t be cursed because we have God’s children all over the nation. Before the last elections, people said Nigeria was going to break but because of the prayers of the saints, we are still standing.

If you compare Nigeria of ten years ago with today’s Nigeria, you will realise that we are not where we used to be. We are developing and Nigeria is not cursed. We cannot be cursed because there are great children of God here. I have been to many countries but I don’t know of any that parades the great men and women of God we have here. So, Nigeria is blessed.

Well, they argue is the nation is not cursed, we won’t be here we are…

…You see, it will be. It is so easy to destroy than to build. It will take time. If Nigeria is still standing, it is a sign that there is hope for Nigerians. There was a time Nigeria was not the first economy in Africa but Nigeria is taking its place back. We are regaining our prestige in the comity of nations. So, Nigeria is highly blessed.

In those days, you don’t want to identify yourself as a Nigerian in the western world but now if you tell people you are a pastor from Nigeria, they respect you and the anointing upon you. So, we are highly blessed.

But how come every minister wants to jet to western countries for ministries?

I don’t think it is all ministers. Yes, those who don’t know their place in destiny might hustle around but those who know where to be and what to do will never hesitate to stay back home.

If God is calling you to be in any part of the world, there is nothing stopping you from going there. But if He asks you to stay back, go ahead by all means and follow Him. Remember the message has given us is not just for Nigeria but the world. That is why you see us going everywhere.

When God told me to move over to America, I was convinced I was not going there for dollars but to fulfill the will and work of God. I come back and move around but I am not in the west because I have to or want to but because God asked me to. I believe I am not the only one. Those who God called for the West will be there and those He wants back home are here.

My advice for ministers will be to hear God well and be sure where He wants there to function. We are all building the kingdom. If He does not ask you to go somewhere, everyone will know in a matter of time.

Some Christians over here are wondering how church leaders like you will cope with the legalisation of same-sex marriage by the American Supreme Court. If a gay couple asks to be married in your church, what will you do?

Our bye-law clearly states that we don’t believe in homosexuality. It is a sin against God and humanity. If anybody comes to our church that they want to be joined, the answer is no. And such person cannot sue us and there is nothing the government can do about it. Our bye-law states that we are a church that does not believe in homosexuality.

And I live in the state of Texas that protects churches to live out their bye-laws. So, there is nothing to worry about. So, if the government and some sections of the country believe in homosexuality, it doesn’t mean is everyone in America believes in it.

We cannot join gay couples because we either stand with God or get out of the way. The word of God is the final authority on same-sex, not the government of America and there is nothing they can do about it. We are praying for revival in America and trust God to show up.

Many are worried traditional Christianity is dead in America with the policy. Is that true?

I don’t believe that at all. It’s like saying every Nigerian is corrupt. Is that right? There are still honest people around. We only need to pray more in America for revival.

President Muhammadu Buhari appears to be in a quagmire on those to form his cabinet. If you were to advise him, what would you be saying?

I will tell him to take the right step he’s taking now. If you want to be a good leader, you need to know what you believe in and stand by it. If He chooses anyone that comes his way, they will mess him up. It is better for him to wait and scrutinize the people that he believes will do a good job.

I will tell Mr. President ‘I salute you sir. Keep doing what you are doing.’

But is he not too slow?

He is not. You can break anything in less than a minute but you cannot manufacture anything in less than a day.

What is your advice to the church in Nigeria?

I will say don’t allow the spirit of merchandise to creep in. You have been strong in prayers. Continue in that path and keep yourself from the love of money and the spirit of merchandise.

  • Customers, members or converts?

A careful study of modern churches will reveal these categories of people. Most churches of today have either one of these people in majority and they will determine the health or otherwise of those churches.

    1. Customers

These are people who only come to the church to collect blessing of healings, miracles, signs and wonders. They seek for prayers and ministrations for one afflictions or the other. They move from church to church every now and then. They want prophetic directions but are not interested in serving The Lord. They largely see God as Father -Christmas who is obligated to give to them and meet their needs, either they serve Him or not.

Preachers also play along by only telling them what they want to hear and use their swagger to fleece rather than feed them. Such churches operate largely as Hospitals— where people come for solutions but don’t stay. Constant movement of people in and out of the church is very rampant. No stable members and back door loses is frequent.

    1. Members

These are regular and nominal church members. They are both cultural and nominal Christians who have been in church for a long time, but are not in Christ. They are more faithful to the church and their leaders than to Christ. They believe more in what their leaders says than what the Bible says. Most times, they become stakeholders, power brokers and cliques in the church. Their lifestyle drives people away from the church because they are eyesore to others. You can be members of a church, yet you don’t really know The Lord. Ask Judas, Ananias and Saphira and Diotrephes in the Bible.

    1. Converts

These are people who truly repent of their sins, have personal encounter with Christ and experience true inner transformation by the renewal of the Holy Spirit. They have moved from darkness to light and from serving sin, Satan to serving The Lord in truth and Spirit.

They are growing to true disciples of The Lord and daily showing the fruits of salvation in every area of their lives. They are FREE from lies, bribery, fornication, adultery and corruptions of this life.

Now, the big question is this, which one these three people are I the majority in our churches?

A true healthy church demands for more converts than customers and members. And it will have to start with pastors and our pulpits. What is being regularly dish out from the pulpit is what will determine the kind of people that will fill our pews.

Remember, if we don’t lead the people to God by preaching the undiluted gospel of Christ regularly, they will nonetheless lead us and our churches away from Christ.

If we fail to give altar call for genuine repentance from sin and ungodly living, our churches shall be filled with customers and cultural Christians and will never become a Rapturable church.

My newest book, DISCIPLESHIFT TODAY will HELP every sincere pastor raise more converts and disciples than customers and routine members.

  • ‘Churches teaching too many wrong values’

‘Churches teaching too many wrong values’

Nigerian-born Pastor Sunday Adelaja is the founder of Embassy of God Church, Kiev, Ukraine, the largest Pentecostal church in Europe.  He spoke with Sunday Oguntola on the wrong concepts that churches in Nigeria are promoting. Excerpts:

During your last visit to Nigeria, you were emphatic that the church was the major problem with the nation’s stunted growth. Do you still maintain that stance?

I wish to state categorically that I am not talking about any particular ministry. There is nothing personal at all. I am not against any man of God or any denomination. I’m just pointing out what I believe is the truth about the situation in our country.

I wish to appreciate all the men of God that have labored in our country. I think they did their best. I believe they taught us what they know. But we still have to admit that things were wrong and these things have to be corrected.

What are some of these things?

In my opinion, the leadership and the structure of the church in Nigeria are as guilty as the politicians. We Christians like to judge, condemn and point fingers at the politicians. In some cases some churches are worse and some of the practices in churches might be worse than what the politicians do.

I am a strong believer in the fact that whatever is happening in any country, the number one cause of it is the damaged value system of that nation.  I think we have a faulty and perverse value system in Nigeria. That is the root cause of all our problems, not just political leadership.

The political leadership comes from our society. Our leaders are not been imported from Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau or from some exotic places like Fiji totally different from us. They are not bringing their strange fire to our camp. No!!!

    How do you mean?

For us to have a corrupt value system as a nation and then be hoping to produce godly leaders is hypocrisy of the highest order. It doesn’t just happen!

It would take a miracle to have such leaders, what would normally happen is that even when such leaders emerge they would be largely opposed.  They would be criticised because what they are doing will not make sense to most of the citizens. Most of the people on the ground profess different value systems.

The value systems the reformed leaders are bringing to our society would conflict with the ones that people are used to. The people would be condemning them. The conflict equals clashes. That means there would be controversies and disagreements.

That is what happened when we had a quite disciplined, god- fearing, pious leader in Muhammadu Buhari in the ‘80s. He was overthrown and the people rejoiced because the discipline and order he was bringing to our people was totally strange to them.

We are used to living the way we like to live. We are used to keeping our freedom, our liberty, our way of doing things. If we now have a god -fearing leader that wishes to develop the country, he would have to first alter the way we do things. Until we change, nothing changes. We didn’t want to change, so when Babangida who was more like us overthrew Buhari, we were happy.

How does the church come in then?

The truth is that our value system comes from our pulpit. Our value system comes from our religious beliefs. Our value system comes from our religious practices. Our value systems come from our educational system. In Nigeria, the authority of the religious institutions is much higher than the authority of the educational system.

So, most of our value system is influenced by faith and religion. That is why I am saying it is the faulty and corrupt messages we have introduced to our pulpits that is responsible for producing corrupt practices in our society.

Can you give examples of this?

A pastor could say that somebody would be a millionaire before the end of the year. Whereas we are in November or December and there are 500 people in that auditorium. All of them will shout amen!!! Yet Pastors don’t correct them saying that no, you would not become a millionaire before the end of the year even if you shout amen for the whole day.

The only person that would become a millionaire is the person that has worked for it. The only person that would become a millionaire is the person that has at least signed a contract. When pastors don’t clarify that, everybody begins to believe that some miracles would happen.

So when such a member goes to his office and he sees an unsigned check, for a million dollars and nobody is claiming responsibility for it, he claims it. He believes that it is God that has provided for him. That is how corruption gets from the pulpit to the society.  That particular member would claim that God has answered his Pastor’s prayer.

He would boldly come to give testimony the following Sunday while the naïve and ignorant members would shout hallelujah! Meanwhile they too are expecting similar miracles and on and on. That is how the vicious circle of corruption from the pulpit to the whole country runs.

    But isn’t breakthrough real?

Breakthrough is a word from breaking forth. Water, springs or streams break forth from under the ground. For it to break forth, it must have been forcing its way for ages or for years before it all of a sudden breaks through.

The breakthrough that we see all of a sudden is as a result of hard work, invincible hard work. Yet we don’t emphasis the hard work aspect, we don’t emphasize the preparation aspect. We only emphasize the breakthrough. We think that those breakthroughs only come through prayers. That is another root of corruption.

Everybody goes out of the church looking for a breakthrough. So any opportunity they see, even though they are not legal, which they didn’t labor for, they want to take advantage of. We are promoting through our preaching and teachings from our pulpits the culture of getting something for nothing.

That means, I don’t need to do much but I can get something I can become rich. That way we are promoting corruption in the whole country. Instead of us to promote the culture of hard work before profit, we rather promote frivolity from our pulpits.

So, all miracles have to be worked out?

The rule of life is that you work hard for your results. You don’t wait for grace or favor to give you results without working for them. We don’t teach people in our churches that truth.

If you don’t work for wealth even if you get that wealth through your parents, relatives or spouse, you are still a thief (Prov. 28:24). You are robbing the people who gave you that wealth.

That is because somebody worked for what you are claiming. How can you just be going to church and claiming something for yourself? That is another faulty doctrine we have, that promotes corruption in the country.

When you teach that people can claim anything, how can they claim when they are not qualified for it? How can they just claim simply because they have greed for it? We are promoting greed, we are promoting lust.

There is no product without the process of production. We tell people they can get something by faith, to only believe. We tell them to just give offerings. We teach them about faith offering. We teach them about tithe and offering. Not that I don’t believe in tithe and offering but that is not the way of receiving wealth. It is the way of preventing curses from coming to your resources.

For you to really have wealth, giving tithes and offerings are not enough. Tithes and offerings open up heaven to you. God doesn’t send money from heaven. You have to go to work and be involved in the process of production. It is only that way wealth and riches will come to you.

Another problem we have in the nation that is contributed by the church is that we teach millions of people that they should expect miracles. Pastors teach about miracles without telling them the truth about the order of life.

The way we are all supposed to live on a daily basis is not through miracles or by miracles. We are supposed to live by laws and principles that God has placed in the laws of nature, in the principles of life and order.

Life depends on laws and rules. But we tell people about miracle, miracle, miracle. No matter what you talk to a Nigerian about, they will tell you about the fact that God will do it. We are asking God to do for us what he has asked us to do for ourselves. There is no way God can do for man, what man is supposed to do for himself. There is no way man can do for God what God can only do.

Most of our prayers in Nigeria maybe about 80 percent are a waste of time. This is because we ask God to do for us what he has asked us to do for ourselves or we ask God to do for us what he has already done.

Thanks to that deceptive teaching, our people expect miracles from morning till night. Our people are looking for miracles. So, any opportunity that presents itself godly or ungodly we take as God’s miracle or blessing. That is a major factor encouraging corruption in the land.

In the real sense we don’t teach people that the possibility of miracle is not the order of the day. It is only two percent of our daily life that should depend on miracles from God. The order of life is the observation of God’s laws and order. Obedience to the laws of God and the society brings wealth and blessings.

Oyedepo donates to Boko Haram victims

    •’We share in your grief’

The founder of Living Faith Ministries, Bishop David Oyedepo has encouraged widows and children of persecuted Christians in northern parts of the country to take solace in Jesus Christ and his reassuring words of hope in the face of oppression.

He spoke during the donation of food and domestic items to the Stephen Children Home Abeokuta, Ogun State at the weekend.

Over 50 widows and 400 children orphaned by Boko Haram fighters in Kaduna, Plateau, Gombe, Kano and other parts of the north are taking refuge in the home.

Donating the items under the David Oyedepo Foundation, the faith preacher said the nation’s Christian community was very impressed by the relentless commitment of the widows and children to the gospel of Jesus in the face of intense persecution.

He assured them that the church remains committed to reminding persecuted saints that they are never alone in their time of grief.

Oyedepo, who was represented by a team from the foundation led by Gift Okwuazu, expressed optimism that the insurgency in the north will end soonest.

According to him: “I am so happy for your resolve, commitment and we will continue to stand by you so that you will remain committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ even in the face of persecution, untold hardship and destruction of properties experience in northern Nigeria.”

The Director of Stephen Children Home, Rev Isaac Newton-Wusu, thanked Oyedepo for his continuous support.

He said: “We thank the church for believing in us as we work hard in taking care of the children of the persecuted saints and we will continue to expand and build fellowship.”

Newton-Wusu challenged the nation’s leaders to be sincere, upright and firm in their determination to put a stop to the insurgency in the north

He stated: “The decision is before our leaders to choose to confront evil and knock it out and nip it in the bud  or leave it to let it expand and when it expand it degenerates into a phenomenon that they never dream of because many of them will be sacked and probably they might seek exile somewhere else.”

  • Experiencing the wonders in the word! (2)

Last week, we began this teaching series with understanding that God’s Word is pregnant with wonders and this is why all miracle, signs and wonders are direct confirmations of the Word. We also explored some of the Wonders imbedded in God’s Word and how to access this wonders. This week, we will examine other virtues required to access the wonders in God’s Words, as we conclude this teaching series.

    • To access the wonders in God’s Word, We must be Spiritual: It is one thing to be filled with the Holy Ghost but it is yet another to be spiritual. We can be filled with the Holy Spirit and still be carnal. For instance, the Corinthians church was not behind on the gifts of the Spirit yet they were carnal. It is therefore important to be spiritual because a natural man cannot understand the things of God, for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned. The more spiritual we are, the greater our access to the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 1:7; 1 Corinthians 3:1-3; 1 Corinthians 2:14).
    • We must walk in the Spirit: It is written, I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day and I heard….”It takes a man of the spirit to hear from heaven. It is not enough to be born again, filled with the Holy Spirit and be spiritual, we must be men and women that walk in the spirit, this is because God can choose to speak to us at any time. If we are not in the spirit, we are sure to miss His directives and continue with our struggles in life. Therefore, we must mind the associations we keep, because carnal men are sure to corrupt our spirituality (Revelation 1:10; Romans 8:6; 1Corinthians 15:23).
    • We must desire more Revelation: More often than not, when things are not working, it is because our insight is inadequate. As we are all aware, we don’t fail exams because we don’t know anything; we fail because we don’t know enough. However, we know that God hates waste and that is why He only unveils treasures to those who are truly thirsty for revelation. As it is written, “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry land.” Revelation answers only to the thirsty; it is therefore our crave to know that opens the doorway to revelation (Isaiah 44:3; 1Corinthians 8:2).
    • We must locate our God-sent ‘Philips’: There are men and women sent our way to provide us with access into the deep things of God. For instance, the Holy Ghost instructed Philip to join the chariot of the Ethiopian Eunuch in order to open up his spiritual understanding. In the same vein, there are individuals appointed to teach and pastor us, and we are sure to be limited in revelations until we find them and engage to maximize all the revelations they bear. However, we should not only receive what they teach, we must also study their lifestyle and see how they apply the things they teach. This is why the Bible admonishes that: “We must not be slothful in business but followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Acts 8:28-36; Jeremiah 3:15-16; Isaiah 30:20-21; Hebrews 6:12).
    • We must engage our spirit in the search: Man is a three-in-one being: he is a spirit; he has a soul and lives in a body. The soul of man comprises his mind, which includes his intellect, his will and emotions. But our intellect is limited in capacity, because it cannot comprehend the things of God. It is only by our spirit that we can access the deep things of God. This is because, “God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” It is also humbling to note that most of the channels through which the scriptures were delivered, were largely ignorant and unlearned men. God simply poured out His plan and purpose for mankind through these ‘ordinary’ vessels. Therefore, it is by engaging our spirit in the search that we can access the deep things of God. Remember, the spirit of the man is the candle of the Lord that searches the inward parts of God’s belly. We must lit this candle and engage same in order to access the deep things of God (Isaiah 26:9; Proverbs 20:27; Luke 15:7-8; 1Thessalonians 5:23; John 4:24).
    • We must engage in the Art of Meditation: We need meditation to access the mysteries in the Word. As it is written, “Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom”. We need to separate ourselves and ponder on the Word, so we can access the mysteries in the Word. For example, the prodigal son meditated his way back to dignity. David also meditated his way into deep understanding. Furthermore, the Word admonishes that “We give attendance to reading, to exhortation and to doctrine, and to meditate upon these things; given ourselves wholly to the findings that we make, so that our profiting may appear to the world”(Proverbs 18:1;Luke 15: 14-20; Psalm 119:97-100; 1Timothy 4:13,15).

Friend, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord? If you haven’t, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

    Liberation Church empowers 150 youths

The General Overseer of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministries Dr Chris Okafor has reaffirmed his commitment to the empowerment of more Nigerians through his foundation.

Speaking while distributing N50, 000 each to 150 graduates of the skills acquisition programme organised by the foundation, Okafor said the gesture was to empower the beneficiaries to be self-reliant.

According to him: “The Liberation skills acquisition programme is to ensure that as we are not only preaching to people to be born again but also impact their lives positively by empowering them to do something for themselves.

“In most cases people come to the church for alms, food and help in one way or the other but giving them something to make money for themselves will reduce that.”

He hoped that the beneficiaries will prosper in their respective businesses through hardwork and dedication to service.

Okafor urged them to put their efforts into whatever they plan to do and pass on the empowerment skills they have received to others.

The church also gave out 13 cars to some of its deserving members.

  • ‘My ups and downs at 60’

‘My ups and downs at 60’

The Senior Pastor of The Stone Church, Ibadan Oyo State, Pastor Alex Adegboye, who clocked 60 last week, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on his life, family and marriage.
    Excerpts:

At 60, how would you evaluate your life?

For me, it’s been a mixed bag of ups and downs. I have been here for 60 years and a man of my age must have gone through a lot. I have been through some bad, some good and the ugly realities of life. There had been a few life-threatening situations like sometimes ago when I took a flight from Abuja to Lagos.

We were about to land but it was raining terribly and the pilot actually said, ‘I’m sorry I’m not sure we are going to land safely anymore. Fast your seat belts because we are going to crash land.’ Everybody began to pray anyhow. Some people urinated that day. There was one too that I took from Abuja to Ibadan here sometimes ago.

We were prepared to land when the plane just started going up again. It went up and up until we didn’t see anything again. So, one had seen a few situations that will make one appreciate life the more. So, it’s been a mixed bag but there have been more good than bad.

Were you aware you were going to live this long?

There is a book I’m reading now by Billy Graham Nearly home. He’s almost 100. When I read through it, I wondered if I would grow old as him. I have never really sat to think of how old I want I live. It is only in recent times that I started thinking of living up to 80 because that is the promise of God to me.

Before now, I have been engrossed doing the will of God. When I had this horrible encounter with armed robbers some 12 years ago, God spoke to me towards the end that He preserved me for His purpose. There were many instances during the period that I could have just died.

I realised that the older one gets, the more useful one becomes. When you are young, you make a lot of mistakes up to the point of almost self-destruct. But as you get older, you are wiser and more useful. So, for that reason, I want to live up to 80.

Were there dreams you set for yourself that have been achieved?

Well, I don’t think I was as smart as children of today. As a young man, I wanted to be very rich. I wasn’t going to get married but have a number of children from different women. When I met the Lord, I changed all that. As an architect, I wanted to design the skyline of Marina in Lagos.  I used to call myself God’s architect.

I wanted to be rich and support God’s works. I never wanted to be a pastor though I didn’t mind funding His works. However, God has bought me here and I have no regrets. I am very secured and fulfilled in what I am doing. I feel contented too. As for achievements, I will just say I am contented.

In your own eyes, how do you rate yourself?

I will say I am very, very successful in my own eyes. By the grace of God, I am doing what He wants me to do. In the early hours of today as I spoke to God, He made me see that He was happy with me. He asked me what I wanted as a birthday present and I said I didn’t want anything personally. I asked Him to do certain things in the lives of my people. As for me, I am okay. I have enough investment financially. I have landed properties; I could have more but they are not useful to me, except for my children.

How many foods can I eat? How much clothes can I wear? How many cars can I drive? I am so well funded and blessed. But for the same of my children, I have a few properties.

At 60, are you thinking of retirement?

Yes, I am. First, I am not going to ever resign or retire. But my roles will change in the ministry. I can’t retire because there will never be a morning I will wake and wonder what to do. I have a private practice that is still on. I still get contracts while my boys handle the field works.

The church has so many branches and projects going on. But I don’t want to continue to do this resident pastor of a thing. I’m going to be more into training leaders and will have to get somebody to do what I am doing now. So, I won’t ever retire but my roles will change. I can’t leave architecture either. I think I am engaged for life.

How did you meet your wife?

We were in UNILAG together. She was in palm wine drinkers club and I was in the palm wine drinkers club too. She was a Muslim. Then, we met again in fellowship and I thought it was a pure coincidence. I didn’t know how to present ‘my papers’ as we used to say. One day, I saw here speaking with a friend. He is Odusote while she was Akinsanya; so I thought it was just an Ijebu connection. The man joked that I should bring money. One day, I saw them talking and walked towards them. He already knew my intentions and left us alone. One thing led to the other and we have been married now for over 33 years.

Can you offer hint into how you raised your children?

All our children are married. They are all born again. I bought them up, not hitting them on the heads. I never sat them down to preach to them but I was a good example at home. I didn’t fight their mummy in their presence; keep a bottle of beer in the fridge but only prayed and read my bible at home as I would do in the church. I was not a hypocrite.

They grew up in the UK and if they didn’t have a solid background, they would have faltered. They got saved on their own at the appropriate time. While they were here, I would always give altar call in the church and they would come out. One day, they stopped coming out. I asked them why and they said ‘I think I’m saved now’. It was something they decided on their own despite growing up in the Western world. Only one of them remains there.

I will give kudos to me and their mum. They saw good examples, not just talks. Anybody can talk but can the kids look at you and realise you live what you profess? They made their choices when it was time to get married. And by God’s grace, they chose the flesh of their flesh.

What has kept your marriage together?

I will just say it’s the fear of God because anybody can do anything nasty at anytime. Every one of us is capable of doing what is not right. I will confess that I have been tempted but the fear of God has been an anchor keeping us together.

Do you fight or have challenges?

We have had challenges. Even now, there are still challenges. When you want to slap someone like this, you will remember the bible asks you never to do something like that. When we were younger, I used to keep malice and still go to church. If I was upset, I would not talk to her and refuse to eat. I realised that was childish. Sometimes, we wake up at nights to talk over issues.

I tell people that the basic is deciding the marriage will work. I tell couples not to fight as if they will never settle. Anybody that says he does not have quarrels with his wife is not honest. The reason some of us stay married is because of the fear of God. God says He hates divorce. If He didn’t say that, few marriages will be left.

Will you kindly disclose what you asked God to do for your members as a birthday gift?

Okay, I will. Some very, very committed members of this church are very sick. Some have terminal diseases while some have children who are very sick. So, I have a burden in my heart for them. So, I asked the Lord to heal them all. As a pastor, my members are very dear to me. They are all I have.

When I see them in a mess, I feel obliged to help them out. I don’t believe God is the only keeping them sick. So, I prayed for them that God will give them faith to access faith. I believe that sickness can be as painful as poverty and vice-versa. I believe not all of us will have a private jet or build a house in Lekki but we should all be healthy. So, I prayed that they will be in good health since Jesus already paid the price.
