  • ‘Ministry must not be on gifts’

‘Ministry must not be on gifts’

Bishop Humphrey Erumaka is the General Overseerof Word Base Assembly. He spoke with Yetunde Oladeinde about life in the ministry, challenges and the forthcoming crusade tagged My unbeatable God.

How has it been running your church for over twenty years?

The church clocked20 years in 2014 and it has been a wonderful experience. When we started, we were in a smaller church but we are now in this magnificent building.

We have two other branches in Ejigbo and Magodo in Lagos. In addition, work is in progress in Lekki and we have more expanse of land.

We also have branches in Owerri and Umuahia. In the ministry, I have travelled to all the continents of the world except Russia.

We have also supported missionary works all over the world. For us, the word of God has kept our church.

We have stood on the clear veracity of the word. I believe that the ministry is not founded on gifts but the word of God.

When did the call come for you?

I trained as a journalist and practised. In 1988, God called me to full time ministry.

For the first six years, I travelled for the ministry and erected a building where we started from. The word of God is progressing and I never felt like quitting at any point but felt things could get better. Ministry is a journey of faith; you can’t do much without him showing up.

As an ex-journalist, how many Christian books have you written?

I have written ten researched books. One of them titled Restoring mandate dignity won the triumphant award in North Carolina. The latest called Book of errors won another award. One of my classics is titled Divine power deposits and the best is called Sustainable friendship.

Interestingly, one individual has printed over 12,000 copies and shared free.

What are some of the challenges in the ministry?

Most of the common challenges are meeting up budget to schedule project dates starring at you. If you start trusting Him,

He would not abandon you midway.

How would you describe the state of the nation at the moment?

The situation appears unstable especially regarding the presidential elections in parts where Boko Haram has exercised damage.

It is more of a national disaster. I have been to top clergy meetings where we donated money in good measure to send to our brothers in the north. We are doing our best but how much can you help a man who has lost house, family and more?

When there is peace, things would be restored. There is war, whatever you give is a relief. We need the crisis in the north to stop and we must stop politicising it.

Despite the fact that there are many churches, unrighteousness is still the order of the day. Why is this so?

That is not in the absolute sense. Put the other way, you can imagine what would have happened if there are no churches. People do not need the church to be righteous. You have the positional righteousness which you receive from Christ as a free gift. The Bible says he that is righteous doeth good and has right consciousness.

A Muslim can be right conscious but that does not give him the positional consciousness. When a people in a nation are righteous, then righteousness exalts a nation.

A lot of people have the positional righteousness but you have to teach them to be right conscious.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

At the moment, we are working on our annual festival of power and prayer crusade, which will take place from 4th to 11th January. It is not all about the church but the community.

It is a period when we open our doors to members of the public. Over the years, a number of testimonies abound to the extent that it is now the community that demands for it. The theme for the next edition of the programme is tagged  My unbeatable God.

Our God never fails. We have done it for six years and it is usually a time to wait on God to start the year on a positive note. It is better to wait on the Lord because if you do not do it HIS way, you may go round looking for what God has placed just next door  to you.

Prayer is a two-way thing and it is better to pray and ask for direction. The programme is interdenominational and we have a number of speakers that include Sam Ihenacho from Enugu; Pastor Diallo from Canada and friends from  within the country.

For music, we have people like Frank Edwards, Sharon and David Moore for our all praise night on Friday. In terms of security everything is intact; we have surveillance gadgets, police and vigilance groups involved.

What are some of the testimonies from previous programmes?

Over the years, we have had a number of cases of healing; declarations are made in terms of God’s  blessings and breakthroughs. A number of people who have been married without children come the following year with their own children.

We also have cases of those who did not come to the programme but they were touched in their homes as well as those who built properties within the year.

Of course, there are also testimonies about the testimonies about the baptism of the Holy Spirit  and people who also got clear cut instructions that led to relocation.

If you are the president of Nigeria, what  would you do differently?

The greatest challenge in Nigeria is poverty and it is orchestrated by corruption. Nigerians are  not lazy but the opportunities and facilities are not favourable.

In China, people are running factories from their garage but here we have issues with electricity. This leads to restiveness and makes our youth available tools.

    •Distributes cars, grinding machines, others

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Presiding Pastor of the Word of Life Bible Church Warri, Delta State, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has been described as a true Christian leader who practices what he preaches.

Imam Mohammed Saidu from Maiduguri, Borno State stated this at the annual poverty alleviation programme of the Eagle Flight Micro Finance Bank, a brainchild of the Word of Life Bible Church where items such as seven brand new Hyundai Grand cars meant for taxis, 20 tricycles, 100 grinding machines and several other consolation gifts were given out to people.

He described the gesture by the church as a practical expression of love.

He said the CAN president has always been a man of the people and a bridge builder between the christians and the muslims.

Oritsejafor, who also inaugurated the new headquarters of the bank at the programme, said he was quite excited and very fulfilled because the true essence of christianity is to love.

According to him, the Eagle Flight Micro Finance bank was set up about nine years ago to provide banking services to the less priviledge in the society and offer soft loans to indigent members of the society.

He said it is part of the church’s effort at reaching out to the downtroden in the society who cannot afford the huge interest charged by commercial banks.

Also, he said the gifts are given out annually to assist the people in their businesses.

One of the guests at the event, Professor Mohammed Al-Amin, managing director of the Federal Housing Authority,  described Pastor Oritsejafor as a true christian who practices what he preaches.

“It is a practical manifestation of the religion. Many pastors across the country have been preaching but Pastor Oritsejafor really has been wolking the preaching,” Amin stated.

He, however, enjoined the CAN boss not to restrict the gestures to Warri alone but to extend it to all parts of the country because it is all about love.

Two of the beneficiaries of the cars, 24-year-old Augustine Chinaso and 20-year-old Dazide Boy, said they were overwhelmed with the unexpected cars given out to them.

Chinaso  thanked the Church for its magnimity, adding that he would forever be grateful to the church for lifting him out of poverty as the taxi would be a source income for his sustainance and finance his education.

According the Chairman of the Bank, Rev. (Mrs.) Helen Oritsajafor, the poverty alleviation programme aligns with  Oritsejafor’s desire to minister not just to the spiritual need of man but also to the physical and economical needs of human existence.

Furthermore, she  said the bank turnover has risen to well over N25bn with a staff strength of over 300.

The bank, she added, has empowered and registered about 3.5m micro credit groups with a cash value of about N2.5bn.

Mrs. Oritsejafor explained that loans have been granted to Small Medium Scale Enterprises to the tune of N10bn and corporate bodies with a cash value of N15bn.

“To further encourage entrepreneurial development and inculcate the culture of savings, the bank has approved the opening of accounts with a minimum balance of just N500 for savings, N1,500 for current accounts and N2, 500 for corporate accounts.”

  • Don’t lose hope, Okonkwo charges Nigerians

The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission(TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, has advised Nigerians to hold on to hope in the face of daunting challenges facing the nation.

Okonkwo, in a New Year message, said: “I urge every Nigerian to always go to God in prayers and not lose hope because the worst thing that can happen to any person or nation is not to have hope.

“If you lose hope, then there is no point living at all but since there is hope and a place to run to, then, it is best we seek refuge in that place and be sure of tomorrow.”

He tasked Nigerians to lift up the nation in prayers on the forthcoming elections.

“I specially call on all Christians to pray that God will cause us to have credible elections and good governance, because I believe that Nigeria has a great future which God has laidout plans for,” he stressed.

Okonkwo appealed to Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voters Card(PVC) to  “re-direct the ship of the nation in the right path.”

He pleaded with agents of destabilisation involved in suicide bombings and terror attacks to desist and give peace a chance.

  • How I made accordion popular

    How I made accordion popular

Reverend Sola Rotimi and the Triple S Ministries is popular with his hit songs Father bless my home, Bami wo ni awoye. The gospel artiste who is passionate in propagating the gospel through songs now lives abroad. He speaks with Adetutu Audu on his music and evangelism ministry.

The kind of gospel music you sang is different from what we have now. What do you think is the problem?

The main problem is that the artistes now are plagued with the perils of the end time. If one is not careful, it is easy to derail from faith because it will come gradually. Most of them do not give their time to study the bible. When I was the president of the gospel musicians in Nigeria, I always tell them, you cannot sing the whole bible without studying the bible, no matter how gifted you are.  For instance, my song, Bami wo ni awoye was inspired by the story of Eli whose children became children of Belial. We need to pray for our children.

When you study the bible you get a lot of inspiration, but if you don’t, there is the possibility of doing it your way. Gospel beats, rhythm, tempo should also be conducive to contrition. There are beats dished out in some of these songs which immediately you listen to it transport your mind to the dancing steps you see on TV.

People dance Makossa, Fuji, right in the church. That is not okay. We are preaching that the secular world should come to Christ but now there is no difference between the two.

That is the reason we have different types of gospel musicians. I was in the choir for years but I was not born again. However, one day I listened to a message from one of our district superintendents who said Jesus said it is not everybody that calls Lord, Lord that will go to the heaven. Whosoever that is born again will go to heaven. So I made up my mind; God, if truly you save people, save my life.

You became popular with accordion. What inspired this?

Our choir master left to further his education and we had an accordion in our church. So there was no one to play. Since I became born-again, the pastor took interest in me and encourages me. Initially, I was shy and could not play and sing with it simultaneously. One night, I prayed and said I wanted to be a big evangelist like the late Apostle Babalola who incidentally was from my home town.  He answered my prayers by the third day. I was able to change tunes of hymns and most of my lyrics I got from the bible. I started going round the major cities to play the accordion. I was working at the paper mill then. I would leave home early as 5am and evangelise through singing. By the time I got to the office, they would be talking about the angel who came around singing. My love for evangelism became so intense that I was always either on casual leave or annual leave. The day my secret was opened was when a train that usually came to Jebba broke down.  The Holy Spirit told me to minister in the train. I later met people who invited me to minister in their churches. People came from far and near to listen and, alas, people recognised me. Holy Spirit taught me all I know, I never went to any music school. However, in 1976, when my boss in the office could not stomach this kind of truancy again, I had to resign to become a full-time gospel evangelist. I am a solo performer. When I started this in Jebba, I was one-in-town. It was funny to some people to see me play and sing at the same time. It made me peculiar.

I tell stories with my songs. I do preach also, but these days, people tend to like choruses and some beats alongside it. I have now resolved to have a group that sings with me. I have tremendous joy when I see people who play the accordion, a musical instrument I made popular in Nigeria. When I started, I was about the only person playing it.

    Do you still play it?

I play almost every day. In the U.S, they fell in love with my accordion because it is only the Spanish, Italian and the German who play it. They are only familiar with violin in the U.S. In the plane, they usually force me to play and I see it as an opportunity to minister. Till date, I have used more than 10.

People have argued that secular music is more rewarding than gospel. Why did you stick to gospel?

After I resigned from the paper mill, at a point when I was playing the accordion, I abandoned it, that it was not financially rewarding. I went to learn printing after five years, with the hope of graduating and establishing it big time. I was sitting with my colleagues when a man accosted me in their midst that God said I had abandoned the work he gave me. I ran after the man, but I could not see him again. But as I was reading the bible, I came across the story of the parable of the talent, so I asked God to forgive me. Also, the testimonies of people after they discovered I was the ‘angel’ that had been singing.  I met someone who introduced me to the person who recorded my first LP.

What are you working on currently?

Right now, we are putting all works on compact disc and DVDs. We already have about 23. Among which is Father bless my home because this generation is familiar with it. And another old song for the old generation, they would be released before Christmas.

  • ‘Nothing mysterious about the Trinity’

    ‘Nothing mysterious about the Trinity’

The Zonal Superitendent of Foursquare Gospel Church Orile Agege, Rev. Adedeji Adeoye, believes that trinity is an unambigious concept undeserving of the controversies it has generated. He spoke with Sunday

hat motivated you to write on a controversial subject like trinity at this point in time?

I believe nothing could have motivated me more than God to write. Well, this is not my first title. My first was in 1985. But this time around, I believe the motivation must have been the controversy itself. I think that people must understand that the issue is something God wants us to understand.

Are you saying that the concept of trinity is not a mystery?

There is nothing like a mystery. I believe it must have been mystified by theologians to make us believe that it is something out of the blues. The fact is that God has been very clear that He manifests in three persons. It is there in the Bible right from Genesis. The story of creation introduces us to the concept of one God in three forms. So there is nothing mysterious about it at all. It is only men that are trying to make it something mysterious.

How long did it take you to write this book?

It took me twelve to thirteen years. Out of these, I spent ten years to pray everyday for God to show me the truth and reveal Himself to me. I kept saying, “God, show me yourself. Let me understand your word.” Then, the moment I started saying those prayers, this book took a dramatic turn. I started getting revelation and insights that make the writing so easy and seamless.

Now that the book is out, are you bothered not many will get to read it because it is on a controversial subject matter and not many people read too?

I am not bothered at all. First, let me say the concept of trinity is not controversial. It is a biblical, scriptural and logical truth that mankind has been trying to deny for many centuries. Logically, it is a truth; theologically too, it is not controvertible. But then you know people like to raise dust when something is not too clear to them.

Secondly, I am not bothered that not many will get to read the book. There is no single book that everyone will read. The Bible is the most popular book but how many people have read it? So, I am not bothered or worried at all. Once hundreds of people get to read it and understand what God is saying about Himself, I am fulfilled.

You sound so convinced about the concept of trinity that has torn Christianity apart. What is the basis of your conviction?

Well, let me share with what happened in February 12, 2012 when I was writing the book. God gave me the opportunity to see Him in human form during a dream. I was transported into His presence and I saw Him manifesting in the three forms. There was a table before Him and He asked Jesus to give me a new garment.

It was so joyous being in His presence. I was elated and did not want to return. I was still enjoying His presence when I woke up. And since that day, the book took a dramatic turn. I wrote with more insights as God revealed so many passages of the Bible to me.

You read architecture. How did you leave that for full time ministry?

I believe that working for God is the best form of fulfilment in life. I still practice with a firm but I am fully into the work of God. I enjoy what I am doing and God has been faithful to me. I am humbled and honoured to be the vessel God has chosen to reveal the age-long secrets about the trinity.

But I am sure the fact that the book is on theology will put many people off

Well, you know theology is simply the knowledge of God. Deep within every man is the crave to know God. On the basis of that, I believe many should want to know. But then only those God has elected will benefit from the insights shared in the book.

What particular message did God give you for the world during your encounter with Him?

God stated that He is the same one manifesting in three forms. There is no ambiguity at all. He wants us to believes He is God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit.

Two, He is coming back soonest to take the faithful ones home. His coming is at hands. And He wants all of us to be prepared to receive Him any moment from now.

  • Kumuyi warns against electoral violence

    Kumuyi warns against electoral violence

The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, has warned candidates, politicians and their supporters to refrain from violence if results do not go in their favour in the 2015 general elections.

He also charged Christians to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to be able to elect leaders of their choice at the polls.

The mathematician-turned- preacher was in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital where he held a three-day crusade tagged “Three Days of Extraordinary Encounter With the God of Miracle” at Deeper Life Campground located in Ajebamidele area of the city last week.

Governor Ayo Fayose; his wife, Feyisetan; Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola; his wife, Janet; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Modupe Alade; political leaders, traditional rulers and religious leaders attended the programme.

The holiness preacher warned against  voting on premordial sentiments like ethnic or religious backgrounds, urging the electorates to vote candidates they believe would serve them better.

His words: “Concerning the 2015 elections, we have the ruling party and the opposition parties but those of us in the populace should look at the candidates.

“What we followers should look at their records and vote not according to religion or ethnic background and that is the best thing for us to know, we should move away from ethnic or religious affiliations.

“People should vote based on credentials of the leaders. We have to look at the records of those that are contesting for us to elect credible leaders that will bring development.

“This is the more reason why people should speak brought the ballot by participating actively in the electoral system.

“There shouldn’t be thuggery, rioting or burning of things, the good of the people should be paramount to those seeking for the votes of the people”.

Kumuyi explained that his coming to Ekiti was a divine arrangement as “this will be the first time in my over 40-year ministry that I will be in a location on 24th, 25th and 26th of December.”

According to him, he is rounding off his  nationwide and continental evangelistic outreach with a visit to Ekiti saying”it’s like God has reserved the very best for Ekiti.”

The cleric who declared peace, unity and prosperity on Ekiti land prayed that the state will move forward and every family will be blessed a rivers of miracles  will flow.

“There is going to be peace, unity and prosperity in this state. This state will move forward and it will not go down,” he prayed.

Responding to more questions on the disposition of Deeper Life members to the 2015 general elections, Kumuyi charged his teeming church members to do everything possible to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to have a say in emergence of leaders at the polls.

Kumuyi said further, “On my own, without journalists pushing me, I declare now that all Deeper Life Bible Church members should go and obtain their voter cards so that they can vote  in the 2015 elections.

“If somebody is not serving us right, we have opportunity to speak with our votes but you should not vote somebody just because he comes from my area or because he comes from my church.

“All Deeper Life members must get their voter cards. It is good for citizens to participate in he electoral system so that when your leaders are not doing well, you will have the right to complain.

“So Deeper Life members, get your cards, go and vote”.

Kumuyi clarified a statement credited to him in which he was quoted to have said that he did not believe in Christmas.

According to him, what he said was that nobody is sure that December 25 is the birthday of Jesus Christ but everybody knows that Jesus Christ was born.

He stressed that emphasis should not be on the day he was born but his essence of coming to the world to save mankind.

Kumuyi also urged the church to take welfare of members serious, noting that his church is trying its best to assist the less privileged in the church.

  • Gbenga Adenuga back with concert

    Gbenga Adenuga back with concert

Multiple award-winning gospel singer, Gbenga Adenuga, has returned from a self-imposed sabbatical with a concert scheduled for Muson Centre, Lagos.

Tagged Worship With Gbenga Adenuga (WWGA), the concert, according to him, is “a time of inspirational, reflective and soul-rendering outpour of worship to the Almighty.”

Billed for Agip Hall of the Muson Centre on Sunday 11th January, 2015 by 5pm, the concert is free but participation will be strictly by invitation.

Adenuga, in chat with our correspondent, said: “I have been off the worship music scene for a while. I got involved in other things but please don’t ask me what.”

He confessed to have “so, so missed that part of me and the truth is that I long to return actively to creating worship music and performance again.”

On the concert, Adenuga said: “I look forward to a great time in God’s presence and in the gathering of real people.”

He added: “This is definitely not your every Sunday worship experience. It’s some kind of fusion: street, trado, contemporary and church.”

  • In defence of the Trinity

    In defence of the Trinity

It takes a daring writer to attempt a expose on a controversial and hot issue. That is exactly what Rev. Adedeji Adeoye set out to do with his new book.

The book attempts to create better understanding on the concept of one God in three persons. For centuries, it is a concept that has sharply divided Christianity. Many non-Christians do not even believe in it, dimissing the concept as arrant nonsense.

Yet, it is in the troubled waters that Adeoye decides to fish. “I am aware that stating the concept of Trinity runs through the Bible is stirring the hornests’ nest,” he startes. But despite this, the author believes He has a divine mandate to unravel the mystery based on a personal story he shares in the introduction.

The book, as far as he is concerned, is a fulfilment of a dream a close fellow minister had about him several years ago. Bearing this in mind, he begins the exposition with denials of God’s trinity in part one.

He refers to several Professors of Theology who have written against the existence of Trinity or declared it a nullity. To him, the mystery has been hidden from professors’ eyes.

Part two deals with proof of God’s Trinity where the author settles down to really convince doubting Thomases on the existence of the Trinity. Relying on the story of creation as recorded in Genesis 1, Adeoye points out that the passage introduces us to the Spirit of God, God the father and Jesus.

The Spirit of God, according to him, was what moved. God the father was the one who decreed light into existence while Jesus is the word through which God created the world. “These three personalities, in reverse order, are therefore the God who saw, the God who said and called and the God who moved and also divided,” he submits.

God the son, he states, is the spokeman of the Trinity while the Spirit of God is the worker and God the father is the thinker. He also applies logics to the relationship within the Trinity to prove that indeed God is one and only.

Parts three and four concentrate on more and more proofs on the Trinity of God. In Chapter fourteen, for example, the author writes that the trinity of man is a forestate of the Trinity of God. God introduced Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In the same vein, God is triune.

To Adeoye, whoever does not doubt the existence of Abraham, Issac and Jacob should never doubt the existence of God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit.

This book is highly theological and logical. There are so many references to the Bible and other theological books. The author deserves great credit for the massive research that went into the book. The readers will indeed find the research materials enriching and captivating.

The author also succeeds in simplifying what otherwise sounds as a complex subject matter. He writes simple and makes his points concise. But he has an obvious bias to prove at all rate that Trinity is a reality. In doing this, he fails to answers several other objections from those on the other side of the defence.

But all in all, the book is a great work deserving of praise. The scholastic research that went into it is commendable. Believers in Trinity will find several other reasons to back their belief. Those who doubt it will also find reasons why to give it a thought. Indeed, the Christian world will find the book a worthy effort in defence on a doctrine that means so much to the faith.

  • How to recover all, by Olujobi

Christians will recover everything they have lost when they align with the purpose of God for their lives, the General Overseer of Wisdom Church of Christ International, Lagos, Prophet Bisi Olujobi, has declared.

He spoke at the 10th anniversary of the church in Lagos.

Olujobi, who began his ministry in Ibadan, Oyo State, over twenty years ago, relocated to Lagos in 2004.

He said he moved to Lagos in obedience to a divine calling to relocate to the city of excellence.

On challenges in the ministry, he said: “Definitely when you start something new, there are always challenges and that is a normal routine for anybody who wants to grow and achieve success.

“We have started the ministry over twenty years ago but we moved to Lagos ten years. We started at Ososami in Ibadan, Oyo State. Things are going well there, we have a branch in London too”.

On how ministry in Ibadan is different from Lagos, Olujobi explained: “We can’t compare the way people attend churches in Ibadan with the way they attend in Lagos because Ibadan people attend churches very well.

“If you talk of the spiritual aspect of worshipping God, the Ibadan people are trying.  They believe that they must make heaven. They care less about wealth.

“But here in Lagos, if you don’t preach about how people are going to make money and be rich, they won’t listen to you. They believe they have come to Lagos to make money so that is the area where worshippers in Lagos are different from Ibadan people.

“However, when a man of God knows what he is doing, he will balance his message and carry everybody along.”
