  • Why African clergymen said ‘no’ to Pope

Why African clergymen said ‘no’ to Pope

    • By Tajudeen Adigun

It was a revolt of people who had been earlier indoctrinated by the white missionaries to embrace Christianity, belief in God, and persuaded to drop their idolatrous ways of life. The white man’s evangelism hit the bull’s eye as Africans took the white missionaries’ message of God and Christianity hook, line, and sinker. It was wholesomely swallowed, changing and rejecting the perception, belief, and everything that they had earlier believed. The new ways and beliefs brought by Christianity had completely permeated the people’s lives and style of living.

So, when the mentors, the advocates of Christian ways of life, now turned around to sell a new deed that was strange to the earlier doctrine they were imbued with, deeds that incurred the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, such as gay marriage, lesbianism, transgender that were not found in the religious dictionary of Christianity, but now advocated by Pope Francis as the new symbols of liberation and freedom, the African bishops had no option, but to say ‘No’. This was fouling the atmosphere of decency and piety as instructed by the Holy Bible. They could not reconcile the belief in God’s ways of life that had been earlier sold to them and the new agenda of the Pope directing Catholic Church priests to bless same-sex couples. It was, therefore, not a surprise that they said ‘No’ and embarked on a collision course with the Pope, who has emerged as the chief spokesperson of same-sex couple marriage and lesbianism. The Pope, in a display of what could be described as an accommodative large-heartedness, advocated the blessing of a same-sex couple by Catholic Church priests.

This did not go down well with the bishops and priests who were indigenes of Africa. The bishops did not make any pretense about their belief that the Pope’s instruction was against the word of God in the Bible. They rose in unison and anger, saying that the Pope’s stance was nothing but a dagger to the church’s heart.  A repackaged paganism. With one voice, they opposed what they tagged a march to Sodom and Gomorrah. They reminded the Pope that it is heresy for any man of God to pray for a couple that is not a man and a woman in a holy union. And here is the spiritual and administrative head of the Catholic Church advocating what made God destroy the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah. This is not only profane but a total absurdity.

The biblical narrative said that Abraham had met the holy angels of God on their way to destroy a city, Sodom and Gomorrah, that was steeped in sins that were repugnant to what was holy and God’s ways. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were neck-deep in lesbianism and gay relationships as men shared anus sexual pleasure among themselves.

Abraham had interceded and pleaded that God should pity the sinners and allow them to repent. God said that if 10 percent of the city’s residents were found to be holy and in compliance with God’s instructions, the city would be spared. In the absence of such people, Abraham said he had family members in the city. Lot was the head of the family and Abraham pleaded that Lot and members of his family should be spared. God accepted the pleadings of Abraham and spared Lot’s family from the calamitous of being burnt to ashes. Members of Lot’s family were, however, under strict instruction not to look back as they were exiting the city. Lot’s wife, either out of folly or pig-headedness, did look back as the family members were exiting Sodom and Gomorrah and she instantly became a pillar of salt.

Most Christians, not to mention those who had undergone theological courses that qualified them to become priests, bishops, and men of God are all aware of this biblical story. Perhaps that was why the African bishops were shocked that the Pope had turned himself into a salesman of priests blessing same-sex couples, which was nothing other than what miffed God to incinerate Sodom and Gomorrah in the past.  Is it not, therefore, surprising that the Pope, who is the postal boy of religiosity, spirituality, and regent of God on earth has become the promoter of lesbianism and gay marriage?

The Catholic Church was the first church on earth. It came to life during the Roman Empire. It assumed as it were not only the religious and spiritual supremacy but also the political sovereignty of the Roman Empire. The orthodox churches, such as Methodist, and Anglican,  among others, came later after the protest of a German clergyman, Martin Luther. Pentecostal churches were to follow later, emerging from the crucible of the orthodox churches.

Earlier, the Anglican Church or the Church of England had come to Nigeria and perhaps Africa with the sugar-coated tongue selling gay marriage, lesbianism, bisexual, and transgender agenda to the continent. The salesmen, however, met a brick wall as the Anglican Church clergy in Nigeria said no. This was one of the reasons that gave birth to a change of name and the Church of Nigeria came to life. The Church of England came to Nigeria on the wings of the British colonialism expedition.

It was in between the deliberate moves of the two churches, the Catholic and Anglican to ram gay marriage, and lesbianism into African minds that the political version tagged: the European Union-Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Countries partnership agreement came. The promoters brought with them tempting subsidies and subventions that were not easy to shun. They were, however, surprised that country after country in Africa said no. That was before the clergymen voiced their opposition to the agenda. They said capital’ No’. The clergymen were not alone in this. It’s on record that former President Goodluck Jonathan and many other political leaders in Africa refused to sign what could rightly be tagged a devilish pact.

What put off African clergymen and, of course, governments in the continent were the immediate implication of the pact for any country or association that signed it. First, the policy of the pact would usurp the primary position of the country’s constitution on related issues. In other words, the pact becomes superior to the constitutions of the countries that signed it.

If the pact on transgender, gay marriage, and lesbianism had been ratified by African countries, it would have been a giant step on the path of promoters of the agenda of the New World Order and their resolve to remove the idea of God in the minds of people.

In 1800, a document tagged: The Protocol of Elders of Zion hit the public in Britain. Its major thrust was the promotion of science above God. Most of the promoters, who were members of the Lunar Society, were products of Edinburgh University. They were not only against the monarchies but were also spearheading the promotion of the removal of God’s ideas from people’s minds. Charles Darwin, that popular scientist, was the leading personnel of the Lunar Society’s cause for science. They believed that science was the new champion for solving human problems and overcoming their challenges. If people, who believed in the power of knowledge and science were shouting and singing its praise from the rooftops, it’s an embarrassment, of the highest order, for the clergy to join in the eulogy of science and the relegation of God to the background in the affairs of men.

The New World Order is premised on the belief that freedom should not be compromised. Every person is free to live the kind of life that appeals to him or her. Provided, he or she does not encroach on another person’s right and freedom. No obstacle should be allowed to hinder people’s enjoyment of freedom. Fueled by pragmatism, the advocates insisted that people should live as they wish. Gods or religious injunctions should not be allowed to hinder their freedom. They resolved that dogmatism that hangs everything about life on fate should be kept at bay. Observers have, however, attributed the new quest for rejection of dogmatism to the gift of the sixth sense. The ability of man to engage in abstract thinking and dwell in the realm of imagination, thus indulging in speculation that sometimes has no solid structure in reality could be vague, spelling disaster for the speculators.

On this note, Pope Francis, who was shocked that the clergymen in Africa revolted and outright rejected his direction on blessing same-sex couples, fingered the preponderance of African culture for their uncompromising stance on same-sex couples.

To Africans, only man-and-woman should be husband and wife. Same-sex as advocated by the pope, to them is not in compliance with God’s order. That is why it must not be touched with a 40-meter pole.

Adeboye assures wind exposing corruption will continue in Nigeria

The General Overseer, of The Redeemed Christian Church (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye has called on Nigerians not to relent in their prayers for God’s continual mercy on the country, adding that the wind currently blowing in Nigeria, exposing some level of corruption that Nigerians never thought of cannot be stopped, but will certainly continue.

Adeboye said this at the RCCG headquarters, The Throne of Grace, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, recently, during the monthly thanksgiving service.

He spoke on the topic ‘When the wind blows,’ where he also prayed for businessmen and women, professionals, traders, market men and women, artisans and their families.

Adeboye emphasized that the level of the unstoppable wind that is blowing in Nigeria, it behooves those that have any hidden secret or simply put, have a skeleton in their cupboards and would not like to be exposed to do something about it before it is too late.

He reminded Nigerians of the prophecy at the beginning of the year that though things would appear very difficult at the beginning, there would be relief at the end of the day.

He therefore pleaded with Nigerians to continue to pray to God for mercy because no one knows for how long the suffering would be.

He also underscored the importance of crying to God because it is only the commoners who are feeling the impact of the difficult time as those in power do not.

The General Overseer who also linked the difficult time to the current rate of the dollar to the naira among other challenges that Nigerians are passing through, assured that there will be solace at the end of the day, but Nigerians need to seek the face of the Lord that it is time for the wind of mercy and favour to blow on Nigeria.

Olaomo urges church to build youths for future at anniversary

The Founder of The Mantle Prayer Ministry, Prophet Isaac Olaomo has called on the Church to rise and save the youths both in the Church and in the nation who are subtly and desperately being lured into the quagmire of worldliness with nothing to offer them but separation from God and bleak future with unfulfilled destiny.

Olaomo made the call at the 12th anniversary and thanksgiving service of the ministry themed ‘Covenant of Rest’ which took place at ministry Prayer Mountain, Sagamu, Ogun State.

Olaomo said the Church should create a strategy that would dissuade the youths from falling into the allurement of the world and it should be prayerfully and carefully done in a way that they would be able to imbibe.

He noted that the advantage for the Church is that the latter would be waxing strong and find it easy to fulfill her mandate while for the nation; it would be filled with righteousness and favour of God.

“Looking back into this 12-year journey, I see God’s faithfulness, true love from devoted servants of God, and unexplainable commitment of lovely children both spiritual and biological.

“The journey in the wilderness has proved the unfailing promises of God with proof of radical transformation of sinners into saints, singles in the pit of desolation given blissful homes, barrenness terminated and lots of nobody becoming somebody, ministers and ministries raised and hell depopulated to the glory of God.

He called on Nigerians to believe in hope against hope as he lamented on the unfavourable structure of Nigeria, with governors finishing their terms and becoming senators and recommended that lawmakers should serve on a part-time basis as the wealth of this nation is only being used to service a few sets of people in Nigeria.

He reiterated that the country would not be able to move forward as long as the present structure subsists.

l did not participate in Lagos PFN election, says Kasali

The Senior Pastor of Foundation of Truth Assembly (FOTA) Rev. Yomi Kasali has said he did not participate in the just-concluded election of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Lagos State Chapter as widely reported.

Kasali spoke with reporters at his church in Surulere, Lagos.

He said he never participated in the election as reported by some online publications.

“This is a response to an online publication about the just concluded PFN election for Lagos State.

“The online publication said I participated in that election that took place on Monday February 5th.

“This news conference is just to state the fact that I did not participate in that election as the online publication stated that my name was on the ballot,” he said.

Kasali, who said that his name which was on ballot could be either an error or mischievously, added that he chose the latter because of what transpired on Jan. 29.

“Before the election, I got a call from the South West Vice President  of PFN, His Grace, Archbishop John Osa-Oni.

“He asked me if I was available to attend the PFN meeting scheduled for Feb. 5.

“I asked him what for and he said it was an election that my name had been nominated to be the chairman of Lagos state PFN and he will like me to come and participate in an election process.

“My response after I thought about it was that I was not interested hence, I declined,” he said.

He added he did not believe in election but consultations for the sacred office because it remains a call to service.

“The reason why I declined is that it is an election. I did not decline to serve the body of Christ if they will like us to serve, I declined because of the process.

“This was how everything went until when the election was held and he told them that I declined but why is my name on the ballot.

“I called Rev Toyin Kehinde to congratulate him but he didn’t pick up, we thereafter exchanged text messages on the same.

“I am still part of the PFN family and we will do our bit as a church in our little way,” he said.

The South West Chairman of PFN. Bishop John Osa-Oni, who spoke to The Nation, admitted Kasali declined participation in the election but his name was already on the printed ballot paper.

He said he was surprised a private conversation went public. According to him: ”If everybody had kept quiet, it will not have generated any issue. The need for a State PFN Chairman is long overdue.

“Anyway, we had a situation like this in 1995, Pastor Enoch Adeboye was the National President of PFN and we had an election at the Foursquare Gospel Church, Headquarters in Lagos. Bishop Benson ldahosa was out of the country and then someone nominated Bishop Idahosa and Pastor Adeboye was also nominated. Bishop ldahosa won the election overwhelmingly. We are family,” he said.

He added: ”If he had won in a landslide will all these be said? You look at the pros and cons. I am the one and l take responsibility.”

  • ‘How our teachings revolutionised companies in food industry’

‘How our teachings revolutionised companies in food industry’

As The Shepherd’s Flock International Church (TSF) celebrates its 20th anniversary, the Lead Pastor of the church, Rev. Tony Akinyemi, talks about the church’s 2024 DIVINE IMPACT SUMMIT which ended today, the impact of his healthy living ministry on the Nigerian companies in the food industry,  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects. Excerpts.

How you feel seeing the church clocks two decades this year on February 1, 2024.

We are full of gratitude to God for two decades of the commission. It didn’t look like it when we first started. All we had was God and the instructions He gave us. We had no financial or material resources to prosecute the vision. However, we had faith in the One who called and commissioned us, that He would provide all the resources needed to carry out the mandate – spiritual resources, human resources, financial and material resources, and He has been more than faithful in sending us quality and loyal men and women who have teamed up with us and laboured alongside us to get to this point.

We can only shout Ebenezer at this time, ‘hitherto as the Lord helped us.’ We feel extremely happy and joyful for the privilege of serving the greatest employer of men, the Almighty God Himself.

Specifically, what are you mostly grateful to God for as TSF clocks 20 years?

We are most grateful to God for the faithful and loyal men and women of skill, character, and integrity that God has used to support us. We are grateful that, despite some challenges along the way, we are still standing and growing in leaps and bounds. We are grateful for all that God has helped us to accomplish in 20 years. We are grateful that when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, TSF did not lose a single soul to COVID-19 in any of our parishes scattered all over Nigeria and abroad. God preserved every single one of us. We are grateful.

Briefly recap the vision that birthed TSF

The mandate God gave us is to raise holy, healthy & highly successful people using a new platform to accomplish the vision. We could have stayed back on our previous platform in the denomination where we were privileged to serve as pastors for 11 years; but God said we should create a new platform for the vision so that it would not be hindered in any way due to a misunderstanding of the vision, hence The Shepherd’s Flock International Church. We set out to start the vision by simply listening to directives from God and guidance from the Holy Spirit every step of the way. When He says “move”, we move, and when He says “stop”, we stop. Every step we have taken is by divine instruction, direction, and guidance, and this has made the work stress-free for us. Alleluia!

What were some of the early challenges of the church, and did you overcome them to keep the work going till now?

Of course, if we didn’t overcome our challenges, we wouldn’t be here celebrating 20 years! Like any other human being or institution, we have had our fair share of challenges but, to the glory of God, we have overcome them all because God has made us more than conquerors. Among many other challenges, was the challenge of the venue for our church services when we first started. Today, God has planted us on our property right now. Not only that, even all our parishes all over Nigeria have been blessed with their own landed properties, except only one parish, and we believe God that that one parish too will acquire its property soon. Even our parish in the UK is on its property to the glory of God. Even three parishes that we are yet to start already have their landed properties in place in Lagos, Ogun, and Osun states. To God be the glory!

You started the church with a unique dimension of healthy living teaching and services. To what extent has the healthy living dimension contributed to TSF’s growth in these 20 years

Well, we set out to teach healthy living to fulfill an aspect of our mandate. It was not intended primarily to grow our church numerically. We have other strategies for numerical church growth. We have been raised to be a blessing to the entire body of Christ in the area of healthy living and to the world at large.

For example, if a pastor general overseer,  a deacon and elder, or a church member from another ministry or denomination comes to our ministry to be ministered to in the area of their health, we sure are not going to expect that after we have ministered to them and they are healed, that they would now abandon their ministry and come to join us. No! That’s not our objective. We have been raised to fill a gap in the body of Christ, to minister to people so that they can be healthy and live long enough to fulfill their destinies and finish their assignments. By the way, there have been instances when unchurched people have come to know the Lord and joined our ministry through our healthy living teachings and medical outreaches.

However, if you are talking about growth in terms of impact and visibility then it would be right to say that our healthy living teaching has helped us to be well known out there. Today, we have a fairly large following on social media because of our healthy living teachings. Two of my healthy living videos (one on Facebook and one on TikTok) garnered more than one million views each in less than one month after we released those videos. Our series on EXPOSE WITH TONY AKINYEMI, which we stream on Facebook and YouTube every Monday at 8 pm Nigerian Time, has a fairly good following too, and has been a blessing to many. Our RAPHA INSTITUTE OF HEALTHY LIVING  has also trained hundreds of Healthy Living Ambassadors (HLAs) both from within and outside our ministry who are also doing amazing things out there in the wellness & fitness industry. To God alone be all the glory.

Aside from the healthy living programmes, what are the other programmes of the church in which God has impacted lives in the past 20 years?

As I said earlier, our mandate is to raise holy, healthy, and highly successful people. We have published books and held seminars in all of these three areas. Our annual free 5F Conference is one of the programmes specifically designed to minister to folks in the areas of their faith, fitness, family, finance, and future. We aim to raise and discipline well-rounded and well-grounded individuals who will be able to radically transform their world for God’s glory and their fulfillment and joy.

We also run The Shepherd’s Academy, our free discipleship training programme for fostering spiritual growth and development and for building spiritual capacity. Our TSF Creche has been another platform to impact the lives of infants and toddlers very early in life. Our Rev. Tony Akinyemi Scholarship Foundation has been a lifeline for many brilliant but indigent students who may never have been able to get formal education if our ministry didn’t offer them scholarships. To the glory of God, we have helped to train several people who are now graduates in medicine & surgery, dentistry, agricultural science, mass communication, computer science, economics, accounting, business administration, engineering, education, you name it. Some of them even graduated with first-class honors. To God alone be all the glory!

What is the significance of the annual Divine Impact Summits (DIS) of the church that also marks its yearly anniversary?

Essentially, our annual Divine Impact Summits (DIS) are moments of taking stock and counting our blessings to reflect on what God has done in us, for us, and through us, to elicit deep gratitude and appreciation on the one hand. On the other hand, these summits also help to create both a platform and an atmosphere for Divine Encounter with God for all attendees. These summits are moments when divinity kisses humanity. Because the Divine Impact Summit (DIS) is held around February 1 of every year, we also use the occasion to emphasize the direction in which God is leading us in every New Year. So, the theme of the year is often the theme of the summit, so that our people can be taught the mind of God for the moment, the present truth, if you will.

US Court slams Nigerian blogger $50,000 for slandering MFM’s Olukoya

A United State-based court in Baltimore County presided over by Theresa Adams, has fined a Nigerian blogger $50,000 in damages for defaming the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Dr. Daniel Olukoya.

Three MFM US-based pastors had filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian blogger who recently relocated to America, after she made a defamatory statement, about the General Overseer of the Church in a video posted to her YouTube channel on November 28, 2023,

The court delivered its judgement in the matter with Case Number: C-03-CV-22-004424 and returned a unified verdict in favour of MFM USA and its three pastors, Grace Ugeh, Kunle Ladipo, and Adekunle Adekola.

Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Chief Legal Adviser worldwide, Barr Davidson Adejuwon said while reacting to the court case that the judgment is only a further confirmation of the word of God that says He (Jesus Christ) has built His church and no gate of hell in any form shall prevail over it.

“Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries is not just any church. It is an Apostolic Revival church of Christ with a great end-time mandate divinely committed into the hand of a prepared prophet and servant of God, Dr D.K. Olukoya the General Overseer of the Ministry worldwide.

“There is certainly no way you deliberately and devilishly collide with such and not be grounded.”

Adejuwon also implored the public and the media to always do proper checks against any form of falsehood before publishing their stories.

“I will use this opportunity to implore the public and our media men and women to always do proper checks before publishing their stories or sharing lies and falsehood against the church of Christ and men and women of God to ensure proper due diligence is done on any story sent to them before going to the public with lies against reputable institutions and personalities.

“We will not fold our hands anymore on such unacceptable trends in our society.

Before the court case, the Church claimed Ashekun had been spreading all manners of erroneous and fallacious statements, on social media, against the MFM Church and its General Overseer, thereby tarnishing and damaging the image and the reputation of the respected man of God and that of his ministry.
