    Be careful of your relationships, cleric tells youths

    The Associate Pastor of Kingsword International church, Lekki, Ms Oluyele Olubiyi has advised Christian youths to shun all form of ungodly relationship as they are capable of distracting them away from God’s purpose for their lives.
     
    Olubiyi said this at a seminar for youths organised by the Youth Fellowship of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Higher Ground Parish, Alakuko, Lagos.
     
    The event tagged Rethinking Relationship brought together over 100 youths drawn from across Lagos state. It features prayers, bible teachings, song rendition, networking session among others.

    She said that many youths have become a prey and have lost their focus and purpose in life because of wrong relationships, adding that any relationship that does not have its root in Jesus Christ is prone to abuse, heartache and disappointments.
     
    She noted that everything in once life is created just the way God wants it. We are not an unwanted pregnancy. God was not distracted when we were conceived; hence we must involve God in all that we do, especially in the relationships that we keep.
     
    She stressed that we must love God and when we are in love with someone, we do all in our power to make them happy and fulfil their heart’s desires. It’s God’s heart desire that we stay pure and remain a virgin till we get married.
     
    Olubiyi added that for young people who are confused and bound by pressure to do wrong, said “you need to speak with someone. Don’t be ashamed. You are not the only one struggling to live a life of purity.
     
    [quote]She opined that staying sexually pure for Christian youth is not just an old time tale but God’s command for his children who want to please him.[/quote]
    “You can decide to use your background as a reason to wallow in self-pity and bad decisions or you can choose to make something good with your life. The choice is always with the individual”, she said.

    In his words, the President of the Youth Fellowship, Kehinde OLUSHOLA said that the seminar is set toward helping teenagers and youth avoid the pitfalls of moral degradation, domestic violence and increasingly cases of a divorce rate in Nigeria.

     Nigerian young leaders get grants to fund health projects

    Women Deliver, a global advocacy organization has announced the award of seed grants of US$5,000 each to 20 young leaders in 15 countries around the world. The grant is to support a six-month project aimed at advancing girls’ and women’s health, rights and well-being in their communities, The Nation learnt yesterday.

    Boris Nwachukwu, a medical student at the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria got the grant to fund a  project  aimed at improving services and increasing access of students to the Youth Friendly Centre of the University of Port Harcourt.  Boris will work on building the capacity of 500 students of the institution on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and contraceptives choice through digital media campaigns and other targeted efforts.

    The second Nigerian grantee, Olaoluwa Adagun is the founder of the Girls Pride Circle, an initiative which aims to advocate for girls’ right and empowerment. Her project tiled, “ Safe Kicks Initiative: Adolescent Girls Against Sexual Violence”,  will  work on the education and empowerment of  250 adolescent girls as well as the mobilization of key members of the community to adopt a Community Action Plan. Olaoluwa hopes that the project will prevent sexual violence against adolescent girls in Alimosho Local Government by 2017.

    The third Nigerian on the list, Isaac Ejakhegbe would be working on a project tagged “My Body, My Right”, to be focused on Female Genital Cutting (FGC)   practiced among many groups in Nigeria. This project aims to fill gaps left by the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) of 2015 through advocacy, community mobilization, and digital media efforts. The goals are to achieve widespread awareness of VAPP throughout Nigeria and to ensure its enforcement in incidents of FGC in Esan West, Edo State, Nigeria.

    Isaac holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Physiology from the University of Benin and a Masters of Science degree in Applied Health Social Science from the school of public health, University of Ghana.  With over five years of experience working in health promotion; maternal and child health care provision, and family planning, Isaac currently volunteers as a program officer at the Women Health and Action Research Centre and also works as the Assistant Managing Editor at the African Journal of Reproductive Health.

    In a press statement made available to The Nation, the Chief Executive Officer and President of Women Deliver,  Katja Iversen  remarked  that  “With the new Women Deliver seed grants, 20 inspiring young leaders from 15 countries can catalyze action and improve the lives of thousands of girls and women in their communities.”

    The 20 grants are part of the Women Deliver Young Leaders Program, which provides opportunities for youth advocates to build and strengthen their capacity and skills and finds platforms for them to share their voices and experiences. The grants are funded by Johnson & Johnson, a founding partner of the Women Deliver Young Leaders Program and long supporter of youth advocacy.

    NYPF to launch N.5bn grant for entrepreneurs, students

    The Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF) in partnership with Heritage Bank and its development partners is set to launch a N500 million special seed fund (YESGrant) for young Nigerians.

    The Seed fund which is scheduled to be launched on Tuesday 22nd March 2016, is part of the NYPF efforts to grow more indigenous entrepreneurs, encourage the culture of self-reliance and deepen the Nigeria economy.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the Director of Communications Miss. Owomilere Obe, saying that the scheme was borne out of the need to address the enormous challenges young people go through in their quest towards achieving set goals in their small scale businesses and in their academic pursuits. She noted that the grant will enable young entrepreneurial postulants with creative ideas in Agriculture, ICT and creative industry start or expand their business concepts and provide over 500 Nigerian students schooling locally or abroad with tuition to pursue their academic dreams and aspiration in the areas of research and technological/scientific innovation.

    “The main objective of the NYPF (YESGrant) Programme is to deepen the Nigerian economy by deliberately encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurs in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas that will lead to massive job creation and also paying tuition for indigent students so that they can be relevant to the society by having relevant skills that employer’s needs. Jobs are a foundation of economic and social development, improving living standards, productivity and social cohesion. Jobs are responsible for moving people out of poverty”. She said.

    Owomilere, therefore encouraged all young person to apply through the grants application system that will be available online and provide all supporting documentation on or before June 2016 to be eligible for the first year disbursement to award recipients in August 2016.

    To qualify for YESGrant, prospective recipients must be between the ages of 18- 40, be registered members of the Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF), and be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) using their registered companies and have an account with Heritage Bank prior to disbursement of fund.

    Student’s award recipients must in addition provide their matriculation number and academic progression report.

    The Nigerian Young Professionals Forum, a non-governmental organisation has been in the forefront lead of building the next generation of business frontiers through intervention programmes for young Nigerians.

    In 2015, over 1000 carefully selected entrepreneurs made up of young business owners residing in Nigeria and in the Diaspora met at the International Conference Centre in Abuja for the debut of the Young Nigerians CEO’s Conference and Exhibition 2015 organized by the NYPF.

    The conference with the theme: ‘Promoting Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Building Economic Leaders for Tomorrow’, afforded young entrepreneurs in Nigeria the opportunity to exchange ideas with their peers from other parts of the world and also served as a platform for the young business owners to discuss challenges they encounter in their operations and its impact on the Nigerian economy.

    Idimu school wins the HIV and AID Football competition

    Idimu Junior Grammar school, Lagos has emerged the winner of the Kick against HIV and AIDS Football tournament organised by the Youth Empowerment Development Initiatives with support from Exonmobil, Mission 5000, MAC AIDS Fund and Grassroots Soccer held at Ejigbo Youth Centre, Lagos.

    The event tagged Getting to Zero had Ireyemi School, Ejigbo, Lagos clique the second price among six schools that participated at the event. The tournament feature health talk, quiz skill practice and free HIV and AIDS testing and counseling, testing and treatment of malaria, medical checkup, eye test, blood sugar test among others.

    One of the students from Idimu Junior School, Agidi Paul, who was very happy for the trophy won by the school in the tournament said that the tournament is a welcome development for them because beyond the fun of playing football, the message of HIV and AIDS was very instructive for them.

    “We are happy with this tournament because it reminds us on the need to avoid unprotected sex and un-sterilized object.  We promise to be ambassadors of this timely message for our peers back home”, he said

    Speaking at the event, the executive Director of YEDI, Anuoluwa Ishola said that the essence of the tournament was to use football which is an effective way to engage hard to reach out of school youth.

    Isola said “football is an effective HIV and AIDS prevention platform to promote behavioral change among young people all over the world. It is an education tools not a spectacular sport, young people retain knowledge best when they are active participants in the learning process.

    She noted that 600, 000 youth population growth per annual in Nigeria and 60% of new HIV and AIDS infections I occurs in youth aged 15-25 and only 23% of schools provides HIV and AIDS education programme as of 2001.

  • Youth advice to invest in agric

    The Branch Manager, Ikeja, Bank of Agriculture, Mrs. Afolabi Oluwafemi has advise young people to embrace agricultural practice as it remain the way out of poverty and unemployment in Nigeria.

    Oluwafemi said this at a one day empowerment programmer organized by he Foursquare Gospel Church, Baruwa District Youth Ministry in collaboration with Project RAYS held at the church in Baruwa, Lagos.

    The workshop tagged exploring and maximizing opportunities within which witness over 50 youths from across the state. It feature empowerment, money grants, micro loans opportunities for small businesses, writing of business plan, preparing for loan application, marketing strategy and exhibiting of products and services.

    According to her, there are countless opportunities and possibilities for young people in the agricultural sector because from farming to marketing of the farm produce are values that can generate income.

    She noted that the need for Nigeria to diversify our economy from oil to agric economy is very apt, timely and urgent and young people must see it as an opportunity to tap into the various opportunities in the agricultural value chain.

    She noted that young people must see agriculture as a business and not just a hobby for them to succeed in any agricultural scheme they are engage in.

    She stated that there are various grants and loan for people who want to engage in agricultural practices; youth people can access the youth agricultural revolution scheme of the bank of agricultural which has no collateral.

    “YARN target youth between the ages of 18-35 years. The sum of 250, 000 to 1million loan with no collateral but two guarantors are needed for young people in agricultural business”, she said.

    Although she noted that young people are always ambitions and want to start big, she said to succeed in agric business, you must start small especially on projects they have not done before and then grow big.

  • 2015 Schools sustainability challenge

    The Trust for Sustainable Living is pleased to announce a new international contest for schools, alongside our International Schools Essay Competition & Debate.

    Participating schools are invited to create a short (max. 3 minute) video showcasing their best sustainability-related project or collection of projects.

    The Schools Sustainability Challenge will recognise and reward the sustainability action and leadership of schools around the world and the winning school will receive the Trust for Sustainable Living’s Schools Sustainability Challenge Trophy, together with a cash prize of £500 or equivalent.

    As with our essay competition, schools will participate in the Schools Sustainability Challenge through Teacher Champions (please register here). The participation of schools in the Challenge will be judged independently of the essay competition.

    Judging Criteria

    The Schools Sustainability Challenge will be judged on the quality of the projects featured in the videos, and their potential replicability around the world. The number of views of the videos on Youtube will also be taken into account during the judging process.

    Submissions deadline

    Videos must be entered no later than 23rd January 2015. Each Teacher Champion may submit one video (maximum length: 3 minutes). Please note that videos longer than three minutes will be disqualified and only one video can be submitted per school.

    Video submissions must be uploaded to Youtube and Teacher Champions will be asked to provide the relevant Youtube link.     The students of Redeemer’s International School has emerged the winner of the M.A.K.E Studios Educational Television Workshop and Competition in science and technology for students in junior secondary schools in Nigeria.

    Redeemers International School clique first among seven schools drawn from Lagos state and were taught on how to use internet as a tool for learning either academic programme and expert advice on career choice, finance and leadership. There is also time for unwinding, entertainment, recreation and sports.

    In his welcome address, Producer of M.A.K.E Studios,Mr. Chris Fasipebi, said that the making of a child is the primary responsibility of three institutions: the home, the school and the society – it is this reality that makes great nations.

    He further said that Education is the most powerful weapon for poverty reduction and inequality in modern society. It is used for laying the foundation of sustainable growth and development of any nation.

    “Even though education is not fun like sports and entertainment, twenty-first century learning has changed and it is providing children with opportunities to experiment with their surroundings as a form of problem solving’ he said

    Adding that M.A.K.E Studios Educational is making amazing discovery, constructing dynamic models of real world processes and interacting with meaningful tools that will expand mental capacity in creative and collaborative ways.

    He said “we want children to learn to create using paints, mixed media, 2D/3D animations, clay paper mache, creative machine and how to turn everyday items they find around their homes into useful and beautify objects a through a powerhouse of M A K E instructors”.

    Fasipebi noted  that M.A.K.E Studios Educational Television Workshop is a platform designed to cater for and contribute to the success of educators by providing television coverage, organize educational events that offer unique systems to enhance creative-thinking, problem-solving and team-working skills of students in an active, fun and entertaining environment thereby exposing these super kids to the skills necessary for them to embrace the challenges of the future.

    He opined that in subsequent events, they will also develop their own design, build models, make machines (robot) and market their creations.
