PUBG MOBILE invites African gamers to 2025 Africa Cup

PUBG MOBILE has officially opened the battlefield to Africa. For the first time, players from Sub-Saharan Africa will have a direct path to the world’s most prestigious mobile esports competition, the PUBG MOBILE Global Championship (2025 PMGC), via the newly launched 2025 PUBG MOBILE Africa Cup.

According to the organisers, the landmark tournament is set to be a game-changer for the African esports scene. While the 2025 PMGC has redefined mobile competitive gaming since its inception in 2020, African teams have never had a clear route to the global stage until now.

Open to players all over the motherland, the Africa Cup will run its registration through the PUBG MOBILE app from June 26th 2025, to July 9th 2025.

Teams will face off in online qualifiers and group stage competition before progressing toward a climactic all-expenses-paid grand Final in Kenya in September 2025. The top squad will not only take home regional bragging rights but also secure a spot at the 2025 PMGC Finals, the apex of mobile esports.

The PUBG MOBILE Africa Cup tournament, sponsored by smartphone giants Infinix, boasts an impressive prize pool of $8,000, with the champion claiming $2,000 and a coveted qualification spot for the prestigious 2025 PMGC.

The second place and third place winners receive $1,400 and $1,000 respectively. Prizes will be awarded all the way down to 16th place, ensuring every player has a shot at glory and a slice of the prize pool.

“We are so excited by the Africa Cup and we just can’t wait to see players from all over the continent drop into the zone and fight side by side with their squads for the title of Africa’s best,” said Brian, Head of PUBG MOBILE Publishing in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“If you think you’re best, then it’s time to test yourself and show the rest of the continent the stuff you’re made of”.

With competitive mobile gaming on the rise across Africa, the 2025 PUBG MOBILE Africa Cup is more than just a tournament. It is a gateway to global recognition and a proving ground for the next generation of esports talent.

  • Engineering the future: How Obinna Onyenahazi is merging STEM with global finance

Engineering the future: How Obinna Onyenahazi is merging STEM with global finance

With a foundation in engineering and experience at top global firms, Obinna Onyenahazi is reshaping how STEM talent drives innovation and impact in business.

In an exclusive interview with The Nation, Onyenahazi shares his multifaceted journey across engineering, finance, consulting, and technology.

He reflects on the motivations behind his career moves, key projects that defined his path, the role of mentorship through the GLOBE NASA program, and his vision for integrating tech and strategy to create lasting global impact.

From Engineering to Finance, your academic and professional path has spanned distinct disciplines. What sparked your initial interest in STEM, and how did that foundation influence your pivot into finance and business?

My journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO). I was fascinated by systems—how complex mechanisms can work in harmony and solve problems.

I loved solving mathematics and further mathematics in high school, and applied its principles to develop and design engineering systems during my undergraduate days. That same curiosity also led me to explore financial systems, where numbers and strategy align to create value.

The finance industry is becoming increasingly reliant on STEM professionals due to the growing need for data analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. I thereafter obtained another Bachelor’s in Accounting and Business and became an ACCA-qualified chartered accountant, CPA (UK).

Over time, I realised that the analytical discipline of engineering gave me a unique advantage in finance: a data-driven mindset, structured problem-solving, and an ability to translate complexity into clarity.

You’ve built experience across top firms like PwC, KPMG, and Dangote, and are now pursuing an International MBA in the U.S. What were some defining moments or decisions that shaped your career path?

Each stage of my career added a new lens. At PwC and KPMG, I was introduced to corporate and organisational structures by the best firms in the world. I learned best practices in terms of how companies are built and managed. I refined my finance, audit, and risk advisory skills, gaining exposure to industries from telecommunications to consumer goods.

At Dangote, I experienced the pulse of African industrial growth firsthand. A key turning point was realising I wanted to shift from being a financial gatekeeper to a value creator—transitioning from audit to investment banking and corporate finance. Enrolling in the International MBA program at the University of South Carolina solidified that transition. It’s an intentional move to deepen my strategic finance capabilities and position myself globally.

As a Chartered Accountant and finance professional in the U.S., how have your diverse experiences shaped your perspective on global finance and emerging markets?

My experiences across Nigeria and now the U.S. have taught me that while financial principles are universal, execution is always local. These roles sharpened my attention to detail, reinforced my commitment to integrity, and taught me how to translate numbers into strategic decisions. Throughout my career, I have consistently solved complex business challenges through analytical rigour and strategic thinking.

During my time at KPMG and PwC, I led complex audits and financial reviews for multinational clients, improving reporting accuracy and contributing to over $240m in combined client savings.  Later, at Dangote Group, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, I stepped into a broader financial leadership role. I led internal audit and corporate finance initiatives across diverse business units— cement, refinery, and logistics.

I served in the team that set up the internal audit department at Okpella Cement Plc in Edo State, Nigeria, a newly established subsidiary of Dangote Cement Group Plc, and helped deliver over $175 million in cost savings through operational improvements and tighter financial controls. But beyond cost savings and KPIs, my work contributed to something more meaningful: enabling reinvestment into infrastructure, expanding job creation, and improving financial transparency across critical sectors in Africa.

I also supported fast-growing US-based startups offering access to crypto, stocks, real estate, and gold, playing a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s investor readiness and scaling strategy. I led a successful capital raise initiative that attracted over $10 million in funding from institutional and high-net-worth investors. By building robust valuation models and crafting compelling investor materials, I positioned these startups as credible players in the competitive digital asset brokerage space. My work bridged technical finance, business strategy, and market insight—fueling rapid growth and credibility with both users and investors. My business analytics skills have also fundamentally reshaped how I view global finance, especially within the context of emerging markets.

By leveraging data to uncover patterns in market behaviour, capital flows, and economic risk, I’ve learned to move beyond surface-level indicators and uncover the deeper forces driving growth or volatility. This analytical lens has also deepened my appreciation for the intersection of technology, finance, and policy, showing me that real impact lies not just in capital deployment but in informed decision-making grounded in data.

These experiences show that emerging markets like Africa are brimming with potential, but they require nuanced financial innovation, blending global best practices with the realities of on-the-ground execution. My goal is to be that bridge: playing at the intersection of finance and technology to drive strategic innovation by leveraging financial expertise and emerging technologies to optimise decision-making, enhance operational efficiency, and unlock scalable value for businesses and society.

You’ve been actively involved in leadership and mentorship, including volunteering as a GLOBE STEM Professional. How do you see yourself inspiring the next generation of cross-disciplinary professionals?

Mentorship is one of the most meaningful aspects of my journey. As part of my engagement with the GLOBE NASA program, I had the opportunity to review student science projects and help them see the broader relevance of their work beyond the lab. I emphasised how their research, whether in climate monitoring, land use, or environmental data collection, could drive business and strategic insights in sectors like agriculture, insurance, and sustainable investing. By showing them how scientific data feeds into financial models, risk assessment, and corporate strategy, I helped bridge the gap between STEM exploration and real-world economic impact. Many students left with a stronger understanding of how technology and finance intersect—and how their ideas could shape future industries.

Looking ahead, what’s your vision for your career in finance? Are there particular industries, causes, or innovations you’re passionate about driving forward?

In the short term, I’m focused on building a career in corporate finance and investment banking—working on M&A, capital markets, and strategic advisory across global sectors. In the long term, I envision playing a leadership role in private equity or infrastructure finance, particularly focused on high-impact investments in emerging markets.

I’m passionate about using capital as a force for sustainable development— whether it’s financing clean energy projects in Africa or advising high-growth startups with scalable solutions. My mission is to build financial systems that are not just profitable, but transformative.

I am currently a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in the United Kingdom, and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) in the United States.

  • Jobberman, Mastercard call for digital employment

Jobberman, Mastercard call for digital employment

Jobberman Nigeria, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, under the Young Nigeria Works programme, have stressed the need for digital employment in Nigeria.

The organisations joined by stakeholders from different sectors made the call during a Technology and Employment Inclusion in Marginalised Contexts Roundtable in Abuja.

The event brought together key stakeholders across government, the private sector, civil society, digital platforms, and development organisations to address urgent barriers and emerging opportunities in the digital employment landscape for Nigeria’s most vulnerable groups.

The stakeholders include women in disadvantaged communities, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), among others.

Speaking during the roundtable, the CEO of The African Talent Company (TATC), the parent company of Jobberman, Hilda Kabushenga said: “Technology can and must be a force for inclusion, not division. As the world of work evolves, we must ensure that no one is left behind. Today’s conversations are not just about technology, they are about equity, access, and opportunity.”

The Country Director, Mastercard Foundation Nigeria, Rosy Fynn, highlighted the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to inclusive economic growth.

“This roundtable aligns with our mission to enable 30 million young Africans, particularly young women, to access dignified and fulfilling work by 2030. Inclusion is not a side conversation; it is the main agenda. We must design systems where marginalised groups are not just considered but centered,” she said.

Fynn said outputs from the event, including a policy and practice brief, would inform employment programming, platform design, and advocacy initiatives.

She added they would also contribute to the broader Young Nigeria Works learning agenda, which is focused on advancing scalable solutions for meaningful work among young people in Nigeria.

According to the Group Executive, Human Capital & Corporate Services, Sterling Financial Holdings, Temi Dalley,  “Technology is only a true enabler when it is inclusive, equitable, and empowering to the underrepresented.

“Its power lies not just in innovation, but in access. Real impact happens when technology creates pathways for the underserved to thrive and levels the playing field for the marginalised.”

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mr Abba Isa, in his keynote, emphasised the importance of building inclusive digital ecosystems that provide equitable access to employment and economic dignity for all Nigerians.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation and validation of a new research report titled: “Technology and Employment Inclusion in Marginalised Contexts”.

The report explores how digital platforms such as job boards, gig and remote work platforms, and social media can unlock access to meaningful employment for marginalised populations.

It also outlines the structural, cultural, and technological barriers these groups face, including low digital literacy, unaffordable data costs, and discrimination in the labour market.

The Technology and Employment Inclusion in Marginalised Contexts research highlights inequalities in employment access for marginalised groups in Nigeria.

“Nearly nine in 10 employers don’t recruit from these groups, with 72per cent making no effort toward inclusive hiring. Skills gaps, transport issues, and bias remain major barriers, yet 55per cent of PWDs and 44per cent of displaced women have found work, often through self-employment in creative/media and agricultural sectors.

“Poor educational access, as 85per cent of schools unequipped for PWDs, compounds the problem, though digital tools and remote work are creating new pathways. “The report revealed that employers now cite a need for subsidised inclusivity training and public recognition to drive change.”

During the event, breakout sessions were held focusing on three critical groups: women in disadvantaged communities, persons with disabilities, and internally displaced persons.

Each session provided space for honest dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, generating insights to inform policy and practice.

NITDA, JICA sign agreement to build $11.2 million innovation hub in Abuja

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed an agreement for the commencement of a $11.2 million innovation hub in Abuja.

The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, who announced this in Abuja, said that the project began with the launch of the iHatch, an initiative designed to co-train and incubate startups, supported with seed funding by JICA.

The project is in collaboration with a consortium of Consultants amongst which were Chief Consultant, Consortium of Oriental Consultants Global Co. Ltd., Intem Consulting Inc., and Yachiyo Engineering Co. Ltd.

According to the Director of Corporate Communications of NITDA, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, the project, backed by a $11.2 million grant from JICA, is designed to significantly boost Nigeria’s innovation landscape by providing vital infrastructure and support for startups.

Hajiya Hadiza also said it would serve as a centre for creativity, research, and technological development.

“To strengthen this relationship, JICA decided to give us a grant to build an innovation hub, so that after training the startups, they can have access to a makerspace where they can turn their ideas into products and services, JICA is giving us a grant worth of $11.2 million to build this innovation hub,” she said in a statement.

She said the DG of NITDA lauded the collaborative efforts aimed at deepening the relationship between the Nigerian and Japanese technology ecosystems.

Inuwa highlighted the importance of ongoing exchange programmes, which not only foster knowledge sharing and skills transfer but also open new avenues for collaboration between innovators in both countries.

These initiatives, he noted, are instrumental to creating a more enabling environment for Nigerian startups to grow into sustainable, innovation-driven enterprises capable of competing on a global scale.

“It’s about building the entire ecosystem; we are not just training startups, we are also giving them the tools, the environment, and the financing they need to thrive,” he stated.

“Beyond infrastructure, the hub is envisioned as a catalyst for economic growth by nurturing homegrown talent and promoting entrepreneurship.

“It will serve as a critical bridge between training and commercialisation, offering a conducive environment for startups to ideate, experiment, and scale their businesses, ” the DG asserted.

“By equipping innovators with the resources that they need to thrive, such as mentorship, incubation support, and access to seed funding, the project aims to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading tech and innovation hub in Africa,” Inuwa added.

  • NIEEE urges new fellows to lead power, tech reforms

NIEEE urges new fellows to lead power, tech reforms

The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) has conferred its prestigious Fellowship title on a new class of distinguished engineers, urging them to play leading roles in addressing Nigeria’s critical energy and technology challenges.

At the 18th Fellowship Conferment Ceremony held in Abuja, NIEEE President, Engr. Felix O. Olu, FNIEEE, described the Fellowship as the highest professional recognition by the Institute and a call to national service.

“This ceremony is not just a celebration of excellence but a charge to commit to deeper service. As Fellows, you are now regarded as elders of the Institute and must take leading roles in mentorship, advocacy, research, and continuous professional development,” he said.

He urged the new Fellows to apply their expertise across the Institute’s six core practice areas: Power and Clean Energy; ICT; Instrumentation and Control; Avionics and Space; Electronics and Computing; and Embedded/Emerging Technologies.

Olu stressed the urgency of their contributions in solving Nigeria’s persistent electricity and infrastructure problems.

“It is unacceptable for the country to grapple with these challenges while your wealth of experience remains untapped. Nigeria and humanity now see you differently—it is forbidden to fail them,” he added.

He also called on the conferees to actively support the forthcoming 21st International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunications (ICEPT), scheduled for October 13–17, 2025, in Osogbo, Osun State.

Chairman, NIEEE Board of Fellows and Provost of the College of Fellows, Engr. Isaac Adekanye, FNIEEE, congratulated the new inductees and reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to professionalism and ethical engineering practice.

He noted that NIEEE is well-positioned to support the implementation of the 2023 Electricity Act through expert input on power system design, operation, and maintenance nationwide.

“We are evolving with the nation. The NIEEE has a pool of competent professionals ready to collaborate with stakeholders to improve service delivery. The CIEEEN, in partnership with NIEEE, is committed to regulating the profession and ending quackery,” Adekanye said.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Vincent O. Olatunji, National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), spoke on “The Right to Data Privacy in the Age of AI and Emerging Technologies.”

He emphasized the ethical implications of rapid digital advancement, recalling how early computing technology was exploited during the Nazi regime and underlining the importance of safeguarding data privacy in today’s AI-driven world.

“AI and emerging technologies are here to stay. The question is—where does it stay, with whom, and to what end?” Olatunji asked, adding that engineers must take responsibility for ensuring ethical and human-centric use of technology.

He highlighted the dual obligations of professionals—not only to avoid violating privacy but also to proactively implement robust data protection measures.

“Data must be processed lawfully, fairly, and transparently. As engineers, you must design systems with built-in privacy safeguards, guided by Nigeria’s Data Protection Act and international best practices,” he said.

In a metaphorical turn, Olatunji compared the concept of data privacy to the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, where the need for dignity and protection became evident. “God was the first to respect data privacy,” he quipped, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.

He urged the Fellows to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in their practice, aligning with Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and global standards.

The event was attended by past presidents of NIEEE, members of the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, National Executive Committee, chapter leaders, industry stakeholders, families of the honorees, and the media.

The NIEEE Fellowship is awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the advancement of electrical and electronic engineering in Nigeria and beyond.

  • Digital activism redefining Africa’s democracy – Falola

Digital activism redefining Africa’s democracy – Falola

A scholar and Pan-African thinker, Prof. Toyin Falola, has said Africa stands at the cross roads of new democratic awakening driven by the transformative force of digital activism.

He noted that the rise of African citizens, particularly youth engagement in power demand, accountability and imagine the future of governance cannot be overemphasised.

Speaking at Aliyu Akwe Doma Theatre of the University of Jos during a lecture titled “Power, Politics and Development in Africa” Falola stated that Africa stands at the threshold of new democratic imagination, which is shaped not by the inertia of state institutions but by the disruptive energy of digital technologies.

He said: “Another trend of enormous relevance is the technology in political processes. The mobile communication has opened fresh paths for political participation and civic action”.

According to him, young Africans are harnessing these digital platforms to challenged, entrenched authority, mobilise resistance, and demand accountability, thereby

dismantling long-standing barriers to political participation.

He said: “Given its ongoing transformation of African politics, this digital revolution will remain a major determinant of political dynamics in years to come”

He cautioned that digital activism also poses new challenges, saying “It presents problems related to the spread of misleading information, state censorship, and government overreach.

Read Also: Falola draws parallels between Africa’s colonial past, AI exploitation

Falola had earlier in his address offered a trenchart critique of elite domination and political patronage in postcolonial African governance.

These actors, he argued, wield disproportionate control over public resources and policy making processes, often to the detrimert of broader societal welfare.

“Political patronage, the practice of allocating offices, resources, and economic opportunities to loyalists undermines the principles of merit and accountability.

“It fosters a culture of dependency and diverts national resources to serve

private networks, entrenching inequality and obstructing development.”

He observed this elite stranglehold on political institutions reduces public trust, limits citizen participation, and reinforces underdevelopment, as policies are routinely tailored to favour vested interests rather than address critical public needs such as poverty alleviation, unemployment, and health care.
