  • Fintech: ICP expert advocates shift to ICP

Fintech: ICP expert advocates shift to ICP

Nigerian financial technology industry players, including developers and innovators, have been encouraged to adopt the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) as a means to eliminate cloud dependency and drive efficiency, business growth, and innovation.

An Information and Communications Technology (ICT) expert described ICP as a decentralized alternative to traditional cloud services such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, capable of heralding a transformative shift in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

The expert stressed that, unlike other blockchain platforms that focus on adoption without addressing user challenges, ICP provides affordable, scalable, and secure solutions tailored to developers’ needs.

Adedayo Adebajo, co-founder of ICP Hub Nigeria, emphasized that if the goal of fintech is to make financial services more accessible, efficient, secure, and user-friendly at a lower cost, adopting ICP is the best and most effective option.

According to him, the shift to the ICP platform can only boost the global competitiveness of the Nigerian Fintech industry.

Highlighting the limitations of conventional cloud services, Adebajo said: “Many Nigerian developers face high costs with traditional cloud services. Startups and small businesses often find it difficult to manage the pay-as-you-go model, especially with frequent currency fluctuations. The financial burden alone can be overwhelming.”

Citing a Statista report showing that 25% of Nigerian developers struggle with high cloud service costs, Adebajo noted that those platforms also face scalability issues and centralized data centres, which can lead to slower performance for local users.

Additionally, he noted that data privacy and security concerns arise as cloud providers control sensitive information, a significant challenge in adhering to strict local regulations.

According to Adebajo, ICP, on the other hand, provides a decentralized network of independent data centres powered by nodes, eliminating reliance on centralized systems.

“With ICP, developers no longer need expensive cloud subscriptions or worry about the rising costs of scaling their applications. Instead, they pay only for the resources they use, giving them greater control and flexibility,” he said.

Addressing scalability challenges, he noted that ICP’s infrastructure dynamically adjusts to growing user demands without requiring costly manual upgrades, saying, “For Nigerian developers working on high-traffic applications like e-learning platforms or logistics solutions, this adaptability is a game-changer.

“Whether you’re building a platform like Andela Academy or scaling a logistics solution like Kobo360, ICP can handle traffic surges seamlessly.”

Adebajo further highlighted ICP’s blockchain technology, which ensures secure and transparent data ownership, empowering developers to control their data storage and access.

“This is particularly vital for industries such as fintech, where safeguarding sensitive financial information is critical.

Read Also: Why Nigerian banks, fintechs are spreading tentacles across Africa

“In fintech, where millions of transactions occur daily, ICP offers secure, scalable solutions without the high costs of traditional cloud platforms. It’s a perfect fit for Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem.”

Beyond fintech, he noted that ICP’s applications extend to various sectors, including e-learning and logistics, adding, “Its decentralized infrastructure ensures peak performance during high-demand periods and provides robust security for growing supply chains.

“The potential applications of ICP are endless. Developers in Nigeria can use this platform to create cost-effective, scalable solutions while maintaining control over their projects.”

Stressing that ICP remains the most cost-effective means for Nigerian developers to reduce costs and overcome scalability barriers, Adebajo said, “The time to explore ICP is now.

“This technology empowers developers to take control of their applications, unlock new possibilities, and drive Nigeria’s tech ecosystem into the future.

“With ICP, you no longer have to rely on traditional cloud services. It’s time to embrace decentralized technology and build the next big thing.”

    A Vision for the Future

Precious is a strong advocate for the ethical integration of AI and data science into business operations. “Ethical considerations are paramount,” he stresses. “Businesses must ensure their AI systems are transparent, fair, and aligned with societal values. This isn’t just about regulatory compliance; it’s about building trust and fostering long-term relationships with customers.”

He also highlights the role of AI in fostering inclusivity. “By prioritizing inclusivity in AI development, we can create solutions that benefit everyone, not just a select few,” he says.

    Conclusion

Precious Orekha’s work continues to demonstrate the transformative potential of AI and data science in solving business challenges and driving growth. His dedication to ethical practices, empowerment, and innovation sets a benchmark for leveraging technology as a force for good.

“The opportunities are endless for those willing to innovate,” Precious concludes. “By embracing AI and data science, businesses can turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s successes, creating a sustainable and prosperous future for all.”

  • Concerned citizens forum defends NCC over telecom tariff hike

Concerned citizens forum defends NCC over telecom tariff hike

The Concerned Citizens Forum (CCF) has expressed support for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in the wake of public backlash over the recent adjustments in telecommunications tariffs by network operators.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, the National President of the group, Opialu Fabian,

described the tariff adjustments as a necessary step to sustain the telecom sector and safeguard its long-term viability.

The CCF clarified misconceptions about the NCC’s role in the tariff increase, emphasising that the commission acted in accordance with its statutory mandate under the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003.

According to the group, the NCC is tasked with regulating tariffs to balance the interests of telecom operators, consumers, and the industry at large.

“The NCC’s primary obligation is to establish a sustainable telecommunications environment that encourages innovation, inclusion, and consumer protection. The tariff adjustment aligns with these goals,” the group said.

The CCF highlighted the economic pressures facing telecom operators, including inflation, naira devaluation, surging energy costs, and rising expenses for imported telecom equipment.

The group noted that despite these challenges, telecom tariffs in Nigeria had remained unchanged since 2013.

“In light of these financial strains, the NCC approved a modest adjustment capped at 50%, significantly lower than the over 100% increment initially requested by operators,” the forum explained.

The CCF argued that the tariff adjustment was critical to ensuring operators’ financial stability, which would enable them to improve infrastructure, enhance service quality, and expand network coverage to underserved and rural areas.

The forum stressed that the adjustments were not solely to address operators’ challenges but also to benefit consumers and support Nigeria’s digital economy. Improved service quality, greater network reliability, and increased connectivity in rural areas were cited as some of the expected outcomes.

“Consumers will enjoy better value for their money, while operators will have the resources to invest in critical infrastructure and innovation,” the CCF noted.

The group also commended the NCC’s efforts to ensure transparency by requiring operators to educate the public about the new rates and offer affordable service plans tailored to different income levels.

The CCF pointed out that tariff adjustments are a standard regulatory practice globally to reflect market realities and sustain industry growth. It lauded the NCC for aligning Nigeria’s telecom industry with international best practices, strengthening the country’s position in the global telecommunications landscape.

“The NCC’s focus on supporting local suppliers and fostering economic opportunities for Nigerians aligns with national goals of self-reliance and economic growth,” the forum added.

The forum also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for commitment to economic reforms and digital inclusivity, which have created an enabling environment for the telecom sector to thrive.

“The NCC’s decision to approve the tariff adjustments aligns with the administration’s broader objectives of driving economic growth and innovation,” the CCF said.

The group called on all stakeholders, including operators, consumers, and the media, to support the NCC in its efforts to build a robust and inclusive telecommunications ecosystem.

The Concerned Citizens Forum also commended the NCC for its leadership and patriotic commitment to ensuring the sustainability of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

“The recent tariff adjustments represent a balanced approach that considers the interests of operators, consumers, and the economy. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive telecommunications sector that will drive national development,” the forum stated.

The digital cards with multiple wallets would allow Nigerians to have access to government services in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government, while it would also provide platforms for students to access government loans.

Already, Nigerian farmers captured under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, (FMAFS) have embraced the digital cards for government services in areas of provision of agric loans, seedlings and other inputs that would improve food production and security.

According to the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the biometric NIMC-enabled cards have multiple features to address the socio-economic needs of Nigerians in line with the 8 point Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Coker-Odusote, who addressed newsmen at the headquarters of NIMC in Abuja on plans regarding the launch of the cards, was flanked by the Managing Director/CEO of NIBSS, Mr Premier Oiwoh,  the Managing Director/CEO of AfriGO, Mrs Ebehije Momoh and the Managing Director of Data Mining Company, Mr Femi Akande.

She said the stakeholders were brought together to explain the different benefits associated with the digital cards to Nigerians and the general impact it would have on the economy as President Tinubu hoped to drive his welfare programmes using digital identity verification as a major platform.

The NIMC boss said the multiple purpose cards would be available to citizens, home and abroad and legitimate residents who could use the cards for various transactions, especially payments of water and electricity bills, transportation services, and shopping, among others.

The cards, she explained, could be used off line and online to provide services for unbanked citizens in rural areas and bring on board those whose businesses required government support for survival, noting that with such opportunities, Nigerians would need no god father to access government services and support.

Coker-Odusote said the digital cards which come with various security features cannot be forged as the biometric information of owners are embedded in them, emphasising that they were made to address current needs of government to ensure that there are no ghost beneficiaries of government palliatives, loans and other benefits.

She assured that the cards would turn around the economy by improving revenue generation and the country’s GDP as states governments and the private sectors would be part and parcel of it.

Speaking on behalf of other stakeholders, the CEO of AfriGO, Mrs Ebehije Momoh said the launch of the cards would change the narratives for the country’s economy as it would ensure that the flow of money remained within the economy.

Mrs Momoh said: “The digital card is a domestic solution to drive financial inclusion and provide cost effectiveness and transparency within the systems. It would ensure data sovereignty and autonomy, and we all know that data is significant to improve our economy.

“This card will help reduce cost, especially dollar given to banks. Domestic payments are important to support welfare and social interventions services of government, so it will help drive cashless policy and ensure that our monies remain within the economy.

“We have about 26 banks already issuing the cards and it is hoped that more would come on board. Nigeria is the first country to come up with this innovation, and surely it would enhance micro-medium enterprises across the country.”

Ten young Africans from ten (10) countries have been awarded the 2024 Future Africa Leaders Awards (FALA) organized by the Future Africa Leaders Foundation.

The Future Africa Leaders’ Foundation is an initiative that seeks to identify, foster, and celebrate young African leaders making a positive impact in their communities.

The mission of the foundation is to explore and expand the leadership potentials across Africa because healthy communities and nations rely on strong, innovative leaders to guide them.

The awardees were presented with the awards by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, president and founder of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation (FALF), during the New Year’s Eve Service.

The moment was further elevated as Pastor TT Temisan, a member of the Central Executive Council, Loveworld Inc., announced the winners’ names, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening.

The recipients all had extraordinary stories and impacts on their communities. However, the star prize winner of the Future Africa Leaders Award was Julienne Ariori from Benin Republic.

She stood out for her exceptional efforts in driving social change and empowering lives across her community. Her groundbreaking initiatives earned her the night’s honour and widespread applause.

Since its inception in 2013, the Future Africa Leaders’ Award, an innovation by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, has become an integral highlight of every New Year’s Eve Service. This prestigious accolade recognizes young African leaders for their commitment to driving progress and fostering development across the continent.

According to the organizers, the award sum given out so far since its inception is about $1.5m.

The star award winner for the 2024 FALA received $25,000 as a token of encouragement, while other nominees were also awarded $10,000 each, generously provided by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

Addressing the global audience, Pastor Chris said: “Sometimes people debate whether leaders are born or raised. But whether they are born, they must be raised. Following the Master’s teachings—‘train up a child in the way it should go’—we see the need to raise leaders.”

Adding to the event’s grandeur, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, delivered an inspiring address at the FALA 2024 ceremony.

He charged the winners to create awardees like themselves. He said: “Go home and create awardees like you!”

Chief Obasanjo lauded the winners as the new faces of Africa’s bright future, describing them as bold, courageous, and the true pride of the continent.
