Google, CEOs, govt pledge to boost Nigeria’s digital economy at NES30

To advance Nigeria’s digital economy and support businesses facing economic headwinds, Google on Tuesday brought together top CEOs, government officials, and industry leaders at the 30th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES30).

The roundtable, themed “Leveraging Digital Solutions to Navigate Economic Volatility,” sparked dynamic discussions on how digital technology can empower businesses to not just survive but thrive amidst the nation’s economic challenges.

As Nigeria stands on the threshold of significant economic change, the country faces both complex challenges and vast potential. With a rapidly growing tech sector and a young, dynamic population, Nigeria is poised to become a leader in digital innovation across Africa. Digital transformation is essential for boosting economic growth, increasing productivity, and improving living standards. Research shows that for every $1 invested in digital technology, $8 is generated for the Nigerian economy—underscoring the immense value of embracing the digital shift.

The roundtable featured influential figures such as Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, and Laoye Jaiyeola, Former CEO of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group. They highlighted the urgent need for collaboration across sectors to drive progress.

Opening with insights from a CEO survey conducted by Africa Practice, the discussions revealed that 46% of businesses reported revenue declines due to inflation and macroeconomic pressures. Yet, despite these hurdles, 70% of business leaders are actively looking to digital solutions to adapt, innovate, and fuel future growth. This widespread adoption of digital tools signals a strong readiness among Nigerian businesses to embrace technology as a transformative force.

Financial constraints, insufficient infrastructure, and limited access to foreign currency remain key barriers to adoption. However, leaders at the roundtable didn’t just outline the challenges—they committed to action.

Government representatives pledged to fast-track the digitization of public services, improve cross-agency collaboration, and address fiscal barriers to support digital transformation. Meanwhile, Google committed to exploring local payment solutions through partnerships, ensuring greater access to digital tools for businesses across Nigeria.

Industry leaders reinforced the private sector’s role in this transformation, emphasizing the importance of working closely with the government while investing in technology and digital skills development to bridge the talent gap.

Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, stated: “I’m excited about forums like this between Private and Public sector because of the opportunity to hear from one another and ideate. I’m a firm believer in working together, because the private sector cannot thrive without carrying along the public sector. Digital transformation should be mobilised within government as foundationary and by beginning this dialogue and continuing momentum, we can achieve a true shift in how Nigeria operates, with a digital first mindset.”

Laoye Jaiyeola, Former CEO of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, highlighted:

“Policy formation is only as effective as the effort behind it. Over the years, we’ve seen businesses engage briefly but move on if there’s no immediate solution. The NESG through its Digital Economy Policy Commission provides a platform for the private sector to make meaningful contributions in advancing digital solutions.”

Olumide Balogun, West Africa Director at Google, highlighted the power of collaboration, stating: “Technology holds the power to transform lives and economies. We believe that by working together—across government, business, and communities—we can unlock the immense potential that Nigeria’s digital economy holds for the future.”

The discussion also explored the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key driver of economic growth. Google reiterated the importance of a responsible and ethical framework for AI adoption, ensuring that innovation is inclusive and beneficial to all Nigerians.

The roundtable concluded with a shared vision for Nigeria’s digital future. The session declaration, agreed upon by all participants, outlines a roadmap for the continued growth of the country’s digital economy, reflecting a strong commitment from both public and private sectors to turn challenges into opportunities.

  • ‘Innovative financing, strategic collaboration will drive energy transition’

‘Innovative financing, strategic collaboration will drive energy transition’

The Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, Heirs Energies, Samuel Nwanze, has reiterated the need for the urgent adoption of innovative financing mechanisms, including green bonds and blended finance, to accelerate the development of solar and other renewable energy projects in Nigeria.

He also emphasised the role of tailored financial solutions in addressing project-specific risks and attracting investments.

Nwanze, who spoke at a firechat session as the ongoing Nigeria Energy Summit holding in Lagos, underscored the critical role of financial institutions in closing the funding gap for Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP).

The summit has as its theme: “Investing in Tomorrow: Navigating the $360 Billion Energy Transition.

“There is no one-size-fits-all financing solution for renewable energy projects. This is why at Heirs Energies, we engage with investors to assess project risks and structure financing in ways that mitigate these risks while attracting capital,” Nwanze said, adding that Nigeria was the first African country to issue a green bond in 2017, which he noted highlights the country’s potential to leverage innovative financing mechanisms for sustainable development.

Nwanze, therefore,  stressed the need for an integrated approach within the renewable energy value chain, calling for better collaboration between key agencies such as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Nigerian Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Association (NREEA).

“Quality needs to be ensured cohesively across the sector. We must align all players within the value chain to achieve targeted results. An effective implementation and monitoring framework is critical because, without it, most government policies will not deliver the desired impact,” he remarked.

Importantly, he said the role of local content in renewable energy development cannot be overemphasised, stressing that the NCDMB has made tremendous achievements in oil and gas which he said can be replicated in the renewable sector.

“Through capacity building, local manufacturing, and research & development, the board’s expertise and the Nigeria Local Content Act can be instrumental in developing a sustainable renewable energy sector,” he said.

Nwanze outlined several key areas requiring investment to achieve Nigeria’s energy transition goals, including large-scale renewable energy projects, off-grid and mini-grid solutions for rural areas, and decarbonizing the power sector. He noted that meeting clean cooking needs alone would require $7.5 billion by 2030.

“The ETP focuses on power, transportation, industrial decarbonization, and clean cooking solutions. Decarbonizing the power sector alone will need about $135 billion by 2060 to expand renewable energy capacity, improve grid infrastructure, and scale off-grid solutions.

There are significant opportunities to diversify the energy mix, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and enhance electricity access”, Nwanze said.

He called for stronger government support, including financial incentives, tax breaks, and subsidies, to drive renewable energy adoption.

He also emphasised the need for clear policy frameworks to provide certainty around tariffs and demand, thereby attracting long-term investments.

“Increasing grid stability, expanding transmission infrastructure, and adopting energy storage solutions are essential for integrating renewable energy into the national grid.

The government must also foster international partnerships to accelerate technology transfer and renewable energy deployment”, Nwanze added.

The ED and CFO of Heirs Energies further reaffirmed the company’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s energy transition.

“At Heirs Energies, we are dedicated to playing a leading role in Nigeria’s energy transition. Together, we can shape a sustainable energy future that benefits all Nigerians,” he said.

  • NITDA, SMEDAN, Sydani Technologies, others launch tech training programmes for youths empowerment

NITDA, SMEDAN, Sydani Technologies, others launch tech training programmes for youths empowerment

A tech-professionals organisation, Sydani Technologies, has entered into a partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for the training of Nigerian youths in a different set of technological skills for self-empowerment.

Sydani Technologies is also partnering with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to ensure that the technological vision of the present administration comes to reality.

The training programme termed Kodex3 is expected to prepare the youths for productive engagements to enhance employability and foster an entrepreneurship mindset among the youths.

Sources privy to the partnership with NITDA said the training would boost technological skills and opportunities and exposure the youths to varieties of platforms upon which they can contribute to the growth and development of the country.

As for the SMEDAN, it would provide entrepreneurship opportunities and access to support for enterprising innovations from Nigerian youths.

The collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps was meant to provide technological skills for young graduates and expose them to areas of possible employment upon leaving the NYSC camps.

Mr Noble Chinyere-Ugo Ajuonu, PhD, a technological professional with Sydani Technologies who spoke to our Correspondent on the collaboration, said the idea was borne out of the desire to support the Federal Government’s efforts to create empowerment opportunities and jobs for Nigerian youths.

Ajuonu who is Head of Sydani Technologies said: “In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, the necessity for a robust skill set in the tech industry has never been more pressing.

“Kodex3, an initiative from Sydani Technologies, is stepping into this gap by offering a new model for tech skills development that integrates innovative learning approaches tailored for various stakeholders, including corporate entities, educational institutions, and aspiring entrepreneurs.

“A significant aspect of Kodex3 is its focus on equipping individuals with practical, industry-relevant skills that often remain absent from traditional academic curriculums. This model seeks not only to enhance employability but also to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among youths.

“By emphasizing hands-on training and project-based learning, attendees are given the tools to solve real-world problems, ensuring they are job-ready upon completion of their programs.

“By partnering with organizations such as the Small & Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Ministry of Youth Development, Kodex3 strives to reach a wider audience.

“These collaborations enrich the program and ensure that it aligns with national goals for economic and social development.”

Ajuonu said the implications of the programme for the public and youth are not only profound but far-reaching as it would contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

He said participants in the Kodex3 programs/collaboration would have a skill set that is directly applicable in the job market, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application.

“This hands-on approach not only enhances individual competence but also contributes to a more skilled workforce, which is vital for businesses seeking talent,” Ajuonu said.

“Moreover, the resources and training provided by Kodex3 are designed to cultivate a sense of innovation among young people—a critical factor in today’s economy where adaptability and creativity are highly valued.

“By encouraging entrepreneurial thinking, Kodex3 helps youths envision and create their own career paths, rather than merely seeking traditional employment opportunities.

“This empowerment can lead to the establishment of new ventures that contribute to economic growth, thereby benefiting society at large,” he said.

According to Ajuonu the community-centered approach of the programme emphasized the importance of networking and collaboration.

He explained that participants are encouraged to engage with their peers and industry professionals, fostering relationships that can lead to mentorship opportunities and collaborative projects.

“This network-building aspect is invaluable, as it lays the groundwork for ongoing professional support and shared learning even after the training has concluded,” Ajuonu said.

  • How to Choose the Best HR and Payroll Software in Nigeria

How to Choose the Best HR and Payroll Software in Nigeria

    By Semilore Oluyemi

In Nigeria, managing payroll is a crucial part of running a business, making sure employees get paid correctly and on time. Payroll involves several tasks, like calculating salaries, deducting taxes, and handling benefits like pensions and health insurance. Old payroll methods, which usually involve manual work, can be slow, error-prone, and not very efficient. But with new technology, Nigerian businesses can use automated payroll systems, which can make these tasks easier and help the business run better overall. One major advantage of automated systems is the ability to generate accurate pay stubs, ensuring employees always have a clear record of their earnings, deductions, and contributions.

Choosing the right HR and payroll software is crucial for businesses in Nigeria, as it directly impacts their operational efficiency, compliance, and employee satisfaction. The use of automated payroll in Nigeria has grown rapidly, especially as businesses seek ways to streamline their operations and ensure accuracy in employee payments. The right software not only simplifies complex HR tasks but also ensures seamless payroll processing, making it an essential tool for businesses of all sizes, from small enterprises to large corporations.

When selecting the best payroll software in Nigeria, businesses must evaluate their specific needs and consider factors such as scalability, compliance, integration with other business tools, and customer support. Payroll software for Nigerian businesses must handle local tax rates, pension contributions, and health insurance schemes like the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Additionally, it should accommodate different pay schedules, such as weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly pay periods, to meet the needs of various industries.

Selecting the right payroll and HR software also requires considering the HR and payroll software’s ability to work well with other software. Many businesses use different digital tools for accounting, managing employees, and following rules. So, payroll software should easily connect with these tools to prevent data from being isolated and to keep everything running smoothly. Cloud-based systems are especially helpful, as they let businesses access payroll information instantly, make changes, and fix problems from anywhere. This is particularly useful for companies with remote or spread-out teams.

A key factor in selecting a HR and payroll software is customer support. Since payroll is a very important part of any business, having dependable customer support is important. Many of the best HR software in Nigeria provide special customer support, making sure users can fix any problems they have quickly. When choosing payroll software for Nigerian businesses, it’s important to make sure the company offers good support, including training materials, help with fixing problems, and keeping the system up to date.

Automated payroll in Nigeria has revolutionized the way businesses handle their payroll tasks. Automated payroll systems integrate HR, accounting, and compliance functionalities, ensuring that payroll is managed with minimal human intervention. This system reduces errors in salary computation, ensures compliance with tax regulations, and simplifies reporting processes. As businesses grow, so do their payroll needs. Using the best payroll app in Nigeria can help companies avoid manual payroll mistakes, such as underpaying employees, incorrect tax calculations, and other financial discrepancies.

For businesses in sectors like banking, oil and gas, and SMEs, finding the right HR and payroll software is critical for smooth operations. These industries have specific payroll, and HR needs that require tailored solutions. For example, an excellent HR and payroll software in Nigeria will include features like employee performance management, compliance tracking, and complex payroll structures that can handle the large workforce typically associated with diverse sectors in Nigeria including banking, oil & gas, insurance, manufacturing, agriculture and SMEs.

The increasing demand for payroll software for Nigerian businesses has led to a rise in the number of software options available. Many local and international developers have created software specifically designed to cater to the Nigerian market. These systems are built with local regulations in mind, ensuring compliance with tax and employment laws. Some of the top HR software in Nigeria also include cloud-based options, which allow businesses to access payroll and HR functionalities from anywhere, at any time. This flexibility is particularly useful for companies with remote teams or multiple office locations.

In the banking sector, the top HR software for banks must handle complex compensation structures. It must also ensure compliance with Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regulations and other financial industry requirements. Security is another critical factor for banking HR software, as payroll data is highly sensitive and must be protected against unauthorized access, those in the banking sector, choosing the top HR software for banks is critical for managing their extensive workforce. Having read about many HR and payroll software in Nigeria, I rank HRPayHub by Delon, the foremost provider of tech recruitment, HR outsourcing and tech upskilling in the Nigerian banking sector the most suitable and affordable product. HRPayhub suitably meets the challenges of large businesses who often have large, diverse teams, with complex payroll structures that include bonuses, commissions, and sometimes overtime payments.

HRPayHub is the best HR software suitable for oil and gas, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and small businesses in Nigeria. Online payroll processing also lets employees check their pay slips, request time off, and update their personal details through self-service portals. This flexibility is important for businesses with teams in different locations or those wanting to give employees more control over their HR tasks.

Many small businesses in Nigeria do not have dedicated HR teams, so the software must be intuitive and user-friendly for business owners and managers to operate. Self-service portals for employees, automated tax calculations, and payroll integration with accounting systems are essential features to look for in the best payroll app in Nigeria for small businesses.

When choosing the best payroll software for Nigerian businesses, one of the first things to think about is how easy it is to use.
