How African businesses can harness Google AI to simplify search advertising

Following its initial announcement in January, businesses across Africa can now use Google’s Gemini AI-powered chat-like tool for Search Ads.

This intuitive tool is now fully operational and designed to help businesses in Africa and across the world boost their online visibility.

In regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, where internet penetration is rapidly increasing, the ability to effectively reach customers through online advertising is becoming increasingly crucial for business growth.

Google’s conversational experience takes the complexity out of ad creation, empowering businesses of any size to easily craft campaigns that resonate with local audiences.

A statement by Google reads: “Creating effective ads can be time-consuming, especially for small businesses,” explains Shashi Thakur, VP & GM of Search Ads & Ads on Google Experiences.

“Our new conversational experience helps businesses of all sizes tap into the power of Google AI to create successful Search campaigns with remarkable ease.”

Here’s how the conversational experience works:

Easy to Get Started: Simply provide a website address, and Google AI will automatically analyse the content.

Tailored Suggestions: The AI generates relevant keywords, ad headlines, and descriptions, inspired by a business and its target region.

Visual Inspiration: Need ad images? Google AI pulls visuals from a website or creates new ones.

You’re Still in Control: Advertisers review and approve all AI-generated elements, ensuring ads reflect their brand.

The introduction of this conversational experience has led to tangible benefits for businesses utilising the platform, with businesses using the conversational experience in Google Ads are 42% more likely to publish Search campaigns with ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’ Ad Strength. This strong ad quality has been shown to directly increase conversions.

This development is part of Google’s broader initiative to empower small businesses in Africa and globally, by facilitating the creation of impactful Search ads. By automatically generating headlines and descriptions based on existing website content, Google’s AI enables ads to dynamically respond to relevant searches. This adaptive approach ensures that small businesses can effectively capture the attention of potential customers, enhancing their visibility in search results.

The conversational AI experience for Google Search Ads is now available globally for English-speaking advertisers, with plans to extend support to additional languages in the near future.

Abimbola Abikoye, who is the founder and convener of Coastal Rural Community Conference on Climate Change, made the call during her opening remarks at the one-day Conference held at Immaculate Hall, Maryland, Lagos, at the weekend.

While speaking at the conference themed: “Strengthening the Capacity of Coastal Communities in Climate Adaptation and Mitigation for more Ocean Governance,” the RRN founder emphasized on the importance of leveraging local knowledge and perspectives in crafting effective climate change mitigation strategies.

She stressed that the resolutions formulated during the conference which brought together over 500 coastal rural women, men and persons with disabilities from across five largest fishing communities in Lagos, would be documented and presented to government representatives at all levels, with the intent of fostering comprehensive and sustainable policy development.

Continuing, she further stated that the Conference was designed with the notion for building robust collaborative frameworks and forging partnerships aimed at catalyzing positive transformations within rural communities. “By fostering dialogue and cooperation, the conference sought to lay the groundwork for initiatives that enhance the livelihoods of individuals residing in coastal areas,” she added.

Speakers at the event in their respective speeches encouraged attendees to take climate change seriously and adopt the best practices in their fishing activities.

The conference, which had presentations from Mr Bankole Michael, the Director Department of Climate Change, Lagos State Ministry of Environment; and Mr Wellington O. Omoragbon, Director Department of Fisheries, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security called for heightened awareness and education on climate issues, urging governments, individuals, and NGOs to intensify their efforts in disseminating climate change literacy at the grassroots level.

Strong systems key to sustaining public institutions – Expert

A Senior Business Analyst and Acting Project Manager at eHealth Saskatchewan, Onyinyechi Gift Henry-Machame, has emphasised that the success of public institutions relies less on visible innovation and more on the strength of the systems operating behind the scenes.

“Sustainable systems are not accidental. They are deliberately designed around people, processes, data and long-term accountability,” she said.

Henry-Machame made the remarks while discussing her work on health emergency intelligence platforms, which support disease surveillance, outbreak detection, and coordinated response.

She noted that many technology failures in the public sector stem from weak governance, fragmented data strategies, and poor stakeholder alignment rather than technical limitations.

“Technology should not create more noise. Its purpose is to reduce uncertainty and enable leaders to act quickly and confidently, especially during emergencies,” she added.

With more than 13 years of experience spanning public health, banking, and enterprise technology, Henry-Machame has led projects focused on enterprise transformation and value delivery. Records from programmes under her oversight show improved user adoption, earlier identification of risks, and shorter implementation timelines compared with previous initiatives.

Her work also includes infrastructure and cybersecurity upgrades aimed at enhancing system reliability, strengthening data centre resilience, and reducing costs through phased decommissioning of legacy systems.

Before entering the public health sector, Henry-Machame held senior roles in financial services, including positions at Canadian Western Bank and Sterling Bank, where she focused on digital transformation and regulatory compliance.

Beyond her primary roles, she has contributed to policy advisory activities, professional mentoring, and financial literacy programmes. She holds an Executive MBA, a master’s degree in finance, and multiple professional certifications in business analysis, project management, and agile leadership.

As digital systems become increasingly central to governance and service delivery, Henry-Machame stressed that the true measure of progress lies in whether institutions can depend on their systems to perform consistently, particularly under pressure.
