  • Image Merchants appoints heads of new divisions for optimum performance in 2024

Image Merchants appoints heads of new divisions for optimum performance in 2024

The Board of Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), the publisher of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, has approved robust measures and policies meant to reposition the company from 2024.

The Board, in its virtual meeting, resolved to change its editorial and commercial modus operandi in the new year to sustain the company’s status as one of the leading integrated media organisations in Nigeria.

Abdulrahman Abdulraheem is now the Managing Editor and Head of Media and Editorial Services; Sa’ad Shuaib is General Manager, Human Resources and Finance, and Mohammed Dahiru Lawal, Head of Innovation and Special Projects.

Board Chairman, Dr Sule Yau Sule said the company’s achievements in 2023 called for celebration, adding that IMPR is now a brand name in Public Relations, Development Journalism and Fact-check in Africa and across the globe.

Sule recalled that the company successfully hosted a series of activities, including the publication of books and research on national security. It also hosted the Security and Emergency Management Awards (SAEMA), Spokespersons’ Communication Awards (SCA), Arewa Stars Awards (ASA) and the Economic Confidential Summit.

The chairman, however, observed that IMPR’s revenue earnings are not commensurate with its accomplishments, productive programs and projects, adding a need to have a clientele for retainership services.

“We should not continue to operate like a charity organisation but as a serious business enterprise where we must earn revenue for our operations. The management should, therefore, work towards translating goodwill into financial patronage by designing and fixing rates for its services,” he added.

The Deputy Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Yusuf Ali, corroborated the position and stated that the major stakeholders should be converted to clients to benefit from the services of the integrated communication outfit.

“IMPR should develop standard service rates for adverts, special reports and other consultancy services by entering into retainership with governments at all levels and financial institutions in the private sector for clientele. The stakeholders should know that IMPR is in business,” Ali said.

Managing Director/CEO, Mallam Yushau A. Shuaib, presented the company’s significant activities and breakthroughs in 2023. He informed that in addition to the PRNigeria Centre in Abuja and Kano State, there’s a plan to open another office in Ilorin, Kwara State, to expand mentorship and advocacy programmes.

Also in 2023, with the support of NITDA and the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), we trained 109 youths and women on digital tools for communication and other modern skills.

“Further, while NIPR approved the hosting of National Spokespersons Awards, we bagged African SABRE Award at the Conference of the Africa Public Relations Association (APRA) in Zambia; Golden World Award of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) in Spain; Certificate of Excellence at World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) in India, etc,” he said.

Mr Shuaib also announced that the three-year project with the WSCIJ with support from the MacArthur Foundation will end in 2024. Others at the board meeting were Mr Ewache Ajefu (Director), Alhaji Ismailia Sani (Director), Barr. Yunus Abdulrahman (Secretary/Legal Adviser) and Mohammed Dahiru Lawal (IMPR staff member).

  • TMY Empire remains dominant force in Nigerian digital media – Ajayi Solomon

TMY Empire remains dominant force in Nigerian digital media – Ajayi Solomon

Founder of Tree Money Yard Empire, Ajayi Solomon, has said TMY Empire will remain a leading name in the country’s digital media in 2024.

TMY Empire comprises Tree Money Yard Records, which he founded in 2015 in Festac and later moved to Lekki, where the larger market is located. About nine years after, the business includes Tree Money Yard Media, Tree Money Yard News, TMY Paygo, among others.

In an interview, the TMY Empire CEO explained certain challenges faced by offline businesses, in the face of the record inflation that plagued the Nigerian economy in 2023.

Ajayi Solomon stated due to the hyperinflation, TMY Empire lost more than 86 percent of its net worth, pushing the company to the brink of recession.

However, in the company’s breakdown of profitability by each of its sub-businesses between 2017 and 2022, TMY Paygo is the second revenue generator.

The TMY Empire boss said that offline businesses bear higher risks, adding that technology is what continues to drive the 21st century global economy.

He added that TMY Paygo connects the world with easy banking solutions which eliminate all bottlenecks.

The company offers banking agent Crypto vendors money sending and receiving funds, disbursement, and crypto processing solutions through TPG,” the 31-year-old businessman said.

“The country’s economy is bad with my technology experience. In 2024, I advise everyone to invest more of their energy on social media platforms for their brand rather than relying on offline platforms.

“I believe the social networking industry is helping more than the country’s resources. Offline investment has higher business risk than online investment. Do you ever notice when the economic inflation’s becoming bad, that is  when the biggest company for example Amazon makes billions of dollars?” the TMY Empire boss queried.

The Ogun-born entertainment entrepreneur, who grew up in Lagos’ popular slum, Ajegunle, is the second youngest of six siblings.

Out of sheer genius, he steered TMY News to be the number one money spinner for the organization. Ajayi Solomon stated that the company’s global appeal is one that has left it with so much advantage.

He said: “TMY News is a brand builder. TMY News is The Tree Money Yard empire Google PR; a group of professional PR who study the Google algorithm and Instagram validation. I don’t really think we have competitors. We came a very long way; worked with most top millionaires and billionaires brands across the globe.

“This has given us more advantage than anyone who is competing with TMY News. TMY News is a professional journalism department And News Wire Communications Network with over 15 years of experience in media technology,” the TMY Empire CEO said.

  • A Call for Environmental Justice: Amplifying Africa’s Voice in the Global Climate Discourse

A Call for Environmental Justice: Amplifying Africa’s Voice in the Global Climate Discourse

    • By Dozy Mmobuosi

In the heart of the Arabian desert, where dreams rise from the sands, the United Arab Emirates welcomed the world to COP28. As we extend our gratitude to the UAE government for illuminating the possibilities born from daring dreams, we find ourselves energized by stimulating speeches, notably from President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber CBE at COP28.

Dr. Al Jaber’s phrases—’sustainability,’ ‘mitigation,’ ‘adaptation,’ and ‘global stocktake’ —resonate as an urgent call to us all to commit to a greener future. Amid the grandeur of COP28, however, a question lingers—what about Africa?

The United Nations projects that by 2050, Africa’s population will reach close to 2.5 billion. Such a figure would mean that more than 25 percent of the world’s population will be African. Interestingly, more than half the continent’s population at that time will be under the age of 25. The necessity for Africa not only to have a seat at the table but to wield an influential voice has therefore become unavoidable. If our African children will be the torchbearers of global agendas, Africa’s voice must be heard and heeded.

    Global Stocktake

In the spirit of Dr. Sultan Al Jaber’s clarion call, a global stocktake becomes our immediate imperative. Transparency in carbon emissions registers worldwide is crucial, but it is equally vital to document the disasters these emissions cause. Our belief is deeply rooted in the conviction that, Africans bears a disproportionate burden of carbon emissions from other continents, although the damage inflicted upon the continent remains underreported and largely invisible.

But Africans can no longer be relegated to afterthoughts. Consider the paradox: Africans contribute raw materials that we find in most household staples and gadgets used around the world. However, to the average African, the processed products are luxuries they cannot afford. This duality is stark, and the carbon emissions from countries benefitting most from African resources far outweigh those emanating from the African continent itself. To make matters worse, little has been done to address this glaring imbalance.

    Nairobi Declaration

The inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, which held from 4th to 6th September 2023, brought African Heads of State and Government together and they signed a declaration, emphasizing the critical challenges posed by climate change to the continent and reaffirming its commitment to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement.

The key points from the Nairobi Declaration, ranges from recognizing the severity of climate change to a call for reparations, underscoring Africa’s determination to address the climate crisis head-on.

Recent climate disasters on the continent further emphasize the urgency of action. For instance, the Horn of Africa drought, Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, and West African floods have left devastating impacts on communities, resulting in loss of lives, displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and significant economic losses. None of these horrific events trended on X (formerly Twitter) and no one had flags of, say, Malawi in their bios on social media.

Proposed Solutions: Establish an Audit Committee

It is time for us to dare to dream again as we chart a new path towards a more transparent and fair system. We believe that there can be no climate agenda without Africa, and indeed Africans, in the front seat.

We propose the establishment of an Audit Committee within the African Union. This committee’s primary objective is to measure, analyze, and quantify the impact of carbon emissions from non-African countries on the continent and to seek reparations for climate disasters on the African continent.

The Audit Committee will create a register of climate disasters, comparing carbon emissions from Africa and non-African countries, highlighting the disparities, and developing a framework for reparations. The committee will engage with international bodies, negotiate with non-African countries, and integrate its efforts with continental initiatives for a holistic approach to environmental justice.

    Democratizing and Incentivizing Carbon Credits

Central to our vision is the democratization and incentivization of carbon credits, ensuring that individuals, not just institutions, benefit from these initiatives. The current system often favors large corporations and institutions, thereby leaving individuals on the side-lines. It is time to reshape the narrative, making carbon credits accessible to everyone. By doing so, we empower individuals to actively participate in the fight against climate change. The benefits of carbon credits should therefore extend beyond boardrooms to reach households, creating a collective responsibility for our planet’s well-being.

Importance of Improving Infrastructure for Preparedness and Disaster Planning

Amidst the challenges we face in Africa, a critical aspect demands immediate attention—the glaring lack of weather monitoring infrastructure. Africa’s 37 radar facilities, compared to Europe’s 345 and North America’s 291, underscore a vulnerability that jeopardizes informed decision-making.

The importance of improving infrastructure in Africa, including radar facilities, satellite data, and surface monitoring, cannot be overstated.

Enhancing Africa’s weather monitoring capabilities is a transformative investment that directly impacts preparedness and disaster planning. Improved infrastructure empowers nations to make timely decisions about when to plant, when to evacuate, and how to strategically confront climate-induced challenges. It becomes a cornerstone for resilient communities, safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the very fabric of sustainable development.

By bridging the infrastructure gap, Africa gains the ability to harness climate data effectively, ensuring accurate forecasts, reliable early-warning systems, and informed policymaking. The benefits ripple through every sector—from agriculture to energy, enabling a proactive approach to climate adaptation and resource management. It becomes an indispensable tool for securing climate finance, demonstrating Africa’s commitment to tackling climate change, and building a foundation for a sustainable future.

Echoing the spirit of COP28, we must now work towards creating a future, built on fairness, hope and aspirations that will outlive us all.
