Journalist donates three classroom block, others to alma mater

Founder of online TV channel, TV360, Deji Bademosi, has donated three blocks of classrooms to his alma mater, St. Ambrose’s Catholic Secondary School, Ondo State.

The new buildings were inaugurated on Friday, last week by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Bademosi, Senior Prefect of the 1994 set, said he revisited the school last year with the aim of calling the attention of the government to the sorry state of the school.

He has built three new blocks comprising nine classrooms and three staff rooms in the junior secondary section of the school.

In addition to the classrooms, Bademosi put up a separate building housing 10 toilets for workers and students and erected a borehole.

Fayemi, during the inauguration, pledged his support to the donor and the school.

“No matter how committed a government is or no matter how dedicated we all are in our service to the state, when it comes to education, I  don’t believe that government is the best vehicle for education. Government should provide policies, it should regulate but it should work with the community and all those who are interested in rendering service in the line of education,” Fayemi said.

The journalist, who also erected a perimeter fence in the school, noted that the gesture was borne out of his passion for education.

“This whole project is borne out of a very strong belief that education remains the best chance to achieving one’s dream. The majority of students who attend this school come from very humble backgrounds. But they also deserve to get quality education.  I am only contributing my own quota to ensuring that the poor students who attend this school get the best of education,” he said.

Commissioner for Education Femi Agagu, who represented Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, lauded Bademosi for his contributions to the promotion of public education in the state.

Benue State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, has said the state ranks among the best in education in Nigeria.

Ityavyar, in an interview at Government House, Makurdi, said Governor Samuel Ortom’s investment in education was yielding results going by the brilliant performance of pupils in competitions.

He said last year, the overall second best student in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) came from Benue State.  He added that the state ranked third in the country in Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) conducted yearly by West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

“Benue is one of the best in Nigeria in terms of education. It is common knowledge that whenever students from Benue go on any competition, they are either first, second or third and have never gone beyond that.

In the nation we are number three in terms of performances in the West African Examinations Council, WAEC. That is Benue is the third best in the country,” Ityavyar stated.

He said Ortom had implemented the N18,000 minimum wage for Benue teachers, a development he said served as a major motivation for teachers.

He also said Ortom had emphasised technical education to address unemployment because with technical education, graduates would become self-employed as well as employers.

Proprietor shares resumption visit by govt officials

    By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

A school owner, Pastor O. A. Durodola, took to the social media to share his experience with evaluators from the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), Lagos State Ministry of Education to his school to assess its readiness for resumption.

He said OEQA officials, who visited his school, Dobar Schools, Ikorodu, unannounced on Monday and checked facilities, including toilets and hygiene wash areas, and observed teaching and learning.

He said they also pointed out errors, which he warned other proprietors not to make.

He said: “I thought it was a joke when I was told that I have visitors. I did not expect the ministry the first day of resumption but they came.  The visit covered the following: isolation centre, all special rooms, observing the students in the class and during the break to see the compliance level to social distancing, the use of face mask and washing of hands; the reception at the gate for both students and visitors whether prescribed protocol to covid-19 compliant are maintained such as checking of temperature, washing of hands, etc.; the availability of teaching and learning materials; checking of diaries, temporary register, teacher lesson notes, diaries and other statutory records.

“Visit was made to our toilets for staff, students and visitors, water point for drinking and it source, availability furniture for students and staff.

Durodola also said the evaluators also recorded the number of pupils present and absent, checked the level of cleanliness of the premises, checked the online registration code and evidence that workers and principals participated in the OEQA online training; demanded for fumigation certificate; counted the number of wash hands basins and the number of classrooms.

Over all, the proprietor described the officials as friendly, and said he was impressed they uploaded the assessment real-time onto their website.

“The visit was thorough though friendly. The visit covered both health status and records. Thank God much has been put in place by us so nothing to fear when I saw them.

Durodola advised school owners to prepare their schools ahead of the government’s visit by doing the following:

    “Compose yourself whenever you see quality assurance visiting your school. No panic they mean no harm; please ensure they observe normal protocol, it can be used against you if not done. We were faulted in this regards. My receptionist allowed them in without taking their temperature and asking them to wash their hands;

“Maintain clean environment, wash toilets regularly and keep the floor tidy; let your students and students maintain social distance in class and outside the classroom. It is not easy but please assign a staff to do this for you. It is very important.

“Using of face mask or face shield should be seriously enforced; both staff and children must be regularly monitored; Please update all your records, don’t say school just resumed.”

Durodola added: “Please be prepared oh. The government is seriously bent on ensuring safety and quality of education provided in Lagos State.”

The OEQA has said it would visit all primary and secondary schools to assess their facilities and compliance with COVID-19 protocols.  Director-General, OEQA, Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, said schools that meet the requirements would be pronounced ‘cleared’, while the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Abosede Adelaja said on Traffic Radio that schools that are found wanting would be shut.

Many school owners who read Durodola’s post on WhatsApp and Facebook, posted by an educationist, Mrs. Dideolu Adekogbe, thanked the proprietor for the useful information shared that would help them be prepared for government’s visit.

However, some school owners took a swipe at government for enforcing standards in private schools while failing to do same in public schools.

Replying to the post on Facebook, Moses Omorogbe said the government did not set good example with public schools.

“I wish the government could be responsible enough to make public schools an example on how to be Covid-19 protocol compliant in the safe reopening of private schools instead of enforcing measures that the state totally lack clues and moral ability to observe, on private individuals. That’s a government that DOESN’T LEAD BY EXAMPLE,” he said.

Ezekiel Okeh  added: “The government sent this people to your school, a private school. Do they have same standards they are holding you to in the schools they manage?”

The Telecommunication and Technology Sustainability Working Group (TTSWG) will host an industry conversation addressing the country’s economic recovery and sustainability of organizations from a tax perspective against the backdrop of the global coronavirus pandemic and the resulting economic downturn.

For a country like Nigeria, a combination of this with dwindling oil prices and global supply chain disruptions, pose a serious threat to its economic sustainability as it is heavily dependent on revenue from the oil and gas industry to survive.

The dialogue will therefore explore how organizations can support the government through the post-pandemic phase beyond tax remittances whilst also discussing exhaustively opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and progressive regulatory practices.

The webinar aptly themed Fast-tracking Economic Recovery through Robust Tax Policies and Practices has been slated to hold on the 9th of October 2020 and will feature Ben Akabueze, Director-General, Budget Office, Federal Republic of Nigeria; Muhammad Mamman Nami, Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as speakers.

Other experts confirmed to join the conversations are Taiwo Oyedele, Fiscal Partner and West Africa Tax Leader, PwC Nigeria; Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators in Nigeria; and Olusola Teniola, President, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON).

One of the avenues employed by the government to increase non-oil revenue is through taxes, following the creation of the Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) to develop strategies and actionable plans to cushion the effect of COVID-19 on Nigerians and reposition the economy on the path of recovery, especially growing the non-oil sectors. This has led to various initiatives and regulatory reviews to increase tax rates, expand the tax net, and improve tax administration and transparency.

Paelon Memorial hospital attains SafeCare level 5

    Our Reporter

Paelon Memorial Hospital has been in operation for 9 years and has achieved a high degree of acceptance in the healthcare community in Lagos, Nigeria.

The hospital has continued to achieve great strides in excellent service delivery since enrolling in PharmAccess Foundation’s SafeCare Quality Improvement Program in 2014.

Her dedication to providing safe, timely, and evidence-based care to patients led Paelon to be the first hospital in Africa to achieve a SafeCare Level 5, in 2016.

The hospital on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2020, received her SafeCare Level 5 Certificate, a second-time achievement since embarking on her quality improvement journey. Paelon Memorial Hospital arguably remains the only hospital in Nigeria to achieve this feat.

Njide Ndili, Country Director PharmAccess Foundation, while presenting the certificate said “through the SafeCare initiative we did a comprehensive assessment of the hospital, identified its quality gaps, designed a tailored 18-month quality improvement plan and supported the execution of the plan. As a result, the hospital has significantly improved its healthcare delivery and the quality of services to patients.”

Receiving the certificate, the Managing Director Paelon Memorial Hospital, Dr. Ngozi Onyia, mentioned that the hospital commenced its accreditation process 18 months ago building on initial quality improvement efforts with PharmAccess Foundation.

According to her the program has ensured quality service delivery and increased the hospital’s brand equity. She also thanked PharmAccess Foundation’s quality team for working and supporting the hospital throughout the process.

During her remarks, the Director of Quality, Dr. Ibironke Dada mentioned that PharmAccess Nigeria will continue to expand and scale its SafeCare Quality Improvement Methodology to support both private and public healthcare facilities offering primary, secondary, and tertiary services in Nigeria.

PharmAccess Foundation, Joint Commission International (JCI), and the Council for Health Service Accreditation Southern Africa (COHSASA) created the SafeCare Standards and Quality Improvement Methodology in 2011.

This was in response to the shortage of institutions and standards for objective measurement and rating of the quality of basic health care facilities in Africa. SafeCare is the first internationally accredited standards designed for healthcare facilities in resource-restricted settings.

The SafeCare standards are holistic covering a full range of management, clinical, clinical support, and ancillary components required for the safe and efficient provision of healthcare services, creating a platform for transparency, benchmarking, and self-regulation.
