How I work with my white manager amidst racism – Sean Dampte

Nigerian-born Sean Dampte, formerly known as Dampte, whose real name is Oluwaseun Oluyole, is an Afro-Pop artist based in the U.K. Sean Dampte sharpened his talent for rhymes, wordplay and metaphors at a young age. He bares his mind in this interview on his new project, his relationship with his white manager amidst mixed reaction on racism. Excerpts:

What got you into music in the first place?

I have being in music so long that I cannot say particularly why I am into music other than it gives me joy and fulfilment to be part of the culture. I guess I can confidently say it must be the love for music itself.

The brand Sean Dampte is gathering great momentum in the music scenes, especially in the UK and Nigeria. How do you feel about that?

I am humbled to say the least but in all honesty there is still much work to be done. I am grateful to my team, friends, family, Awoodahites and everyone that is part of this journey.

How did you start to push the brand to this applauding level?

Like I said earlier, I am humbled to see how far we have come. The most important thing for me and for everyone for that matter is the resilience that you possess. I started by believing in myself and ability and over time, loads of people started to see I would not be going anywhere and began to take the brand Sean Dampte serious. It’s been a long journey, but we are thankful.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I like to call what I do Afro-Calypso but ultimately it is part and parcel of the AfroPop vibe with loads of other cultures present.

How does your work comment on current happenings in the social and political circles?

Yea it’s been and still a trying time overall and I cannot shy away from the happenings. With that said, that is one of my reasons for the single ‘Adura’ just to point out that only prayer can uplift us. And we must always continue to pray.

Your manager is white, while you are black. How do you feel given the recent uproar about racism against the black race?

Personally, I understand where and how the current uproar affects the psyches, however it is never about white versus black but rather about us, from a black background, being treated equally and respected.
I support the #BlackLivesMatter movement wholeheartedly and willingly believe in what we trying to achieve.

Where and when do you get inspired to write your lyrics, inside the plane or while talking a walk?

Inspiration for me comes standard and I am actually grateful for my team. It happens anywhere and when that happens, you can bet am on to my team. We working always to get the best our to everyone. My key producers Joey Benks, JayOcean and Jomane have been fantastic. Sometimes 1 AM, 2 AM we are still up working across continents. Hahahaha

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

I do sing in the shower but it’s never the same song. Although I have been singing Adura for the last couple of days and I am sure you know why. Very uplifting I find it.

Most people believe nowadays artistes don’t undergo much stress to blow unlike the days when there was no internet or social media when musicians had to go from one town to another to perform. But now it seems easy as many music talents have blown via social media?

It is really difficult to comment on that but one cannot undervalue the effect of social media and technology as a whole. The truth is that the challenge is still there and more importantly it has opened up the opportunities for more talents to be able to showcase themselves and direct their musical career.

Where have you performed and with which artists?

I have performed at a host of events to say the least – But in the last two years I have been on stage with Wizkid at the YCee concert, Falz the Bahd Guy, Davido all in the United Kingdom, Kizz Daniel in Amsterdam to mention a few.

Which is your favourite song to perform from your songs?

In truth I enjoy performing to all of my songs at every opportunity I get. Considering I enjoy listening to good music. However, if it were to happen that I was put on the spot and had to perform one, I would most probably choose Marcelina – it’s a very different vibe that gives.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

There are loads of great artistes and musicians out there to say the least and that follows that I probably would admire a lot of them. But k

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

Hahahahahaha! Seriously, that alone is enough to get one into more trouble wouldn’t you agree! Awoodahites are always right! Let’s just say that is it.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Wow! I personally find every advice useful at all times. But what my dad always told me growing up was that talent in anything is never enough to excel – so you must work harder, pray harder and dream bigger!

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

That in itself would be a monumental task for one person to take upon him or herself. Hahahahaha, I would only want more to be done to protect the artistes and their investors really. No one likes their work to be infringed upon and no one likes to be cheated. So yea, protect all stakeholder rights as much as humanly possible.

If you could go open a show for any artiste, who would it be?

Hahahahaha, I have been on stage with most Nigerian Artistes and all so maybe for me now, having to open up for Drake in this moment would do it.

You once said in an interview that you almost committed suicide due to depression. How did you get over it?

It was a dark place to be in. And it’s not somewhere I like to visit. But one generally needs to keep on focusing on the good things and love for family. It is important to keep in contact with close family and friends and speak out. That works for me and hopeful it helps others do who struggle with it.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

I mean all my Awoodahites know how we do now! We plenty like stars! Life Money Happiness crew. We keep on keeping on. I love my Awoodahites and they love me too!

    What’s next for you?

Yea it’s been an interesting year to say the least and following all the great reviews we have had for my hit single ‘Adura’ – I think it’s time I let people into my world and so will be dropping my Sophomore EP on August 21 titled “Awoodah Rising: Man Like Sean Dampte” Make sure you look out for i.

Kanye West breaks ranks with Trump, vows to win presidential race

    Agency Reporter

Rapper Kanye West signalled he no longer supports U.S. President Donald Trump and said he had entered the presidential race to win it, in an interview published on Wednesday.

West, previously a vocal supporter of Trump, announced on Saturday that he would run for president in 2020.

“I am taking the red hat off, with this interview.

“Like anything I’ve ever done in my life, I’m doing this to win,’’ West told Forbes, referring to Trump’s trademark red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap.

He told the magazine he would run under a new banner, the Birthday Party.

West and his reality TV star wife, Kim Kardashian West, have visited Trump in the White House.

He, however, denied that his aim was to split the Black vote and hurt the chances of Trump’s Democratic opponent, Joe Biden.

“It was a form of racism and white supremacy to suggest all Black people should support the Democrats’’ he said.

The rapper told Forbes he had been ill with COVID-19 in February and would be suspicious of any vaccines developed to prevent the infection, repeating false theories that link vaccines with child developmental disorders.

“So, when they say the way we’re going to fix COVID-19 is with a vaccine, I’m extremely cautious, as that’s the mark of the beast.

“They want to put chips inside of us, they want to do all kinds of things, to make it where we can’t cross the gates of heaven,’’ Kanye added.

774,000 jobs: Ngige apologises as National Assembly voids recruitment

    From Sanni Onogu, Abuja

Minister of Employment Labour and Productivity, Senate Chris Ngige, on Tuesday apologised to the National Assembly over the recent altercation between the Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo (SAN) and a joint committee of the National Assembly.

Keyamo had disagreed with the committee on the processes and modalities for implementing the Special Public Works (SPW) programme of the Federal Government meant to hire 774,000 youths across Nigeria.

The beneficiaries are expected to be paid N20,000 per month for three months, beginning from October to December 2020.

Ngige apologised when he visited the Senate President Ahmad Lawan in Abuja.

Keyamo and other top officials of the ministry were in the minister’s entourage.

Keyamo had told reporters that he was not bound by the Director of the National Assembly, saying he will approach the President for final directives on the matter.

Ngige said: “We deeply regret the incident that happened at the last visit, the altercations that followed it between my Minister of State and members of the joint committee. Therefore, we decided that as a team, we will come in full force and give you the necessary information that you will need so that we can fast-track this programme.

“Today in the Ninth Senate, we are enjoying a good and robust relationship with the legislature and some of us who have passed through this institution will do everything possible to maintain that relationship.

“Therefore, Mr Senate President, I apologise on behalf of the ministry for what took place at the last time and I hope this apology will be taken by the members of the committee and the entire National Assembly because I am aware and I know that a committee is a representative of the whole.”

Lawan said the process must begin afresh, stressing that the National Assembly had the right to demand answers about the programme.

  • Unanswered questions on FCCPC’s Irukera actions against Med Contour boss

Unanswered questions on FCCPC’s Irukera actions against Med Contour boss

    Adekunle Samson

The social media was abuzz in the last few days with the news of the arrest and purported arraignment of Dr Anuoluwapo Adepoju of Med Contour Services Limited, a Lagos-based medical Doctor, by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, over the death of one of her clients, Mrs Nneka Onwuzuligbo.

According to the FCCPC, Dr Anu Adepoju and her hospital were arraigned for allegedly obstructing the investigation by the commission into the case which led to the closure of the hospital for more than two months now.

However, the events of the last few days by the FCCPC and its chief executive officer who is also the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Babatunde Irukera, have drawn the curious eyes of the public over the handling of the case.

The recent actions of Barr Irukera have raised eyebrows and questions are being asked as to his personal involvement in the case which borders on vendetta.

Some of the questions begging for answers over the case are: How else can we explain why the FCCPC would get involved in a case that is outside its jurisdiction? Why would Mr. Irukera the CEO of a Federal Government agency personally come to Lagos from Abuja and invade Dr Anu’s clinic with a team of policemen without a search warrant or any legal backing of any sort?

Why does he appear to have an obsessive interest in Dr Anu’s case? In whose interest is he hellbent on circumventing the law just to embarrass Dr Anu? Why would a self-acclaimed lawyer act in this manner?

One would think the involvement of the CEO of the FCCPC will ensure that the agency follows the tenets of the rule of law. To compound matters, together with erring officers of the police, he orchestrated arrest of Anu, making her spend three days in the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.

He personally mandated the Police not to grant Dr. Anu administrative bail and claimed the orders to lock her up were supposedly from the Inspector General of Police.

What do we make of the fact that Mr Irukera goes around intimidating innocent people using the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo’s name? Is the vice president aware that a public official is making such vile threats with his good name?

Barr Irukera filed information about Dr Anu since the 3rd of June 2020 and did not serve her a copy as demanded by law. She only became aware of the charges in court on the 3rd of July 2020.
He was duly scolded by Justice LIMAN J. of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos for failure to duly and properly serve Dr. Anu the frivolous allegation levelled against her before the beginning of trial.

Before Dr Anu was arraigned, Mr Irukera went ahead to give the press uncertified court copies of proof of evidence, and affidavit of completion of investigation. Mr Irukera has made himself the regulator, enforcer, investigator, prosecutor and judge in this case.

It is high time the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire and other relevant medical authorities cautioned Mr Irukera as he has no grounds to harass Dr Adepoju.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo should immediately call Mr Irukera to order. He should be compelled to stop dragging the name of a well-respected individual in the mud with his gutter tactics.

This is also a clarion call on the president, Muhammadu Buhari to look into Mr Irukera’s activities as they are not befitting of the prestigious office which he holds. His actions bring disrepute to the efforts of Mr President to better the lot of Nigerians.

    God bless Nigeria.

  • NESG creates market diagnostics, solutions framework for NESI

NESG creates market diagnostics, solutions framework for NESI

    Chinyere Okoroafor

For an improved electricity industry and constant power supply across the nation, an analytical and solutions framework has been mapped out for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), has said.

This was necessary following recent issues from the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry which has had a major effect on performance improvement.

In a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Communications, NESG, Mr Yinka Iyinolakan, the inconsistencies in the power sector has limited the growth and expansion of the Nigerian economy over the years.

It said that the recent postponement of the implementation of the new electricity tariff is evident that not much has changed in Nigeria’s electricity industry.

According to NESG, the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), has undergone fundamental changes over the past few years with the implementation of the government’s reform programme reputed to be one of the most ambitious privatization exercises in the global power industry.

READ ALSO: How to minimise COVID-19 disruptions, by NESG

It said that some fundamental changes that has occurred in NESI over the years include the formation of the Power Holding company of Nigeria (PHCN) in 2005, unbundling of PHCN into 18 independent companies and commencement of 10 generating plants in 2016 to introduction of multi-year tariff order committee in 2008. Others include the shortlisting of firms for the acquisition of PHCN power assets in 2010 and privatisation of 11 distribution companies and 5 generation companies in 2013.

NESI has been in a vicious cycle and this has not allowed the industry to improve its performance, with the increasing liquidity crisis becoming a serious risk for the Nigerian banking sector.

According to the African Development Bank, Nigeria spends N5.075 trillion annually to power generators. The solution to the problems in Nigeria’s electricity sector is to create and operate a successful electricity market.

Babalola accuses ASUU of blocking varsities reopening

    Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado-Ekiti

Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) has accused that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been actively obstructive to the re-opening of universities in the country.

Babalola expressed displeasure over the Federal Government’s decision on non-resumption of final year students of tertiary institutions like those in Primary Six, JSSIII and SSSIII, attributing the decision to the likely objection from the “Almighty” ASUU.

The legal icon, in a statement made available to journalists on Monday in Ado-Ekiti by Tunde Olofintila, Head, Corporate Affairs, said the government’s directives should have been excluded private universities from the directives.

“I was not disappointed on the non-resumption of final year students of tertiary institutions, because I knew the reason why the government left out the final year students of University. And I believe the Federal Government was aware that if it directed final year students of public universities to resume, the almighty ASUU would object and in this case, ASUU has objected.

Drawing from his seven-year experience as Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Babalola said about the “Almightiness” of ASUU: “Before I took over as Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, even Council meetings could not take place unless ASUU and other Unions had been appeased or else such Council meetings would not be allowed to hold. It was a serious matter at that time, but I successfully managed that”.

READ ALSO: Penile amputation’ll deter rapists, says Afe Babalola

Delving into how he got the news of return of final year Primary pupils, JSS III and SSS III students to school, the legal giant said: “Interestingly, it was a parent who alerted me that the Federal Government has directed final year students in secondary schools to resume and take their final year examinations. He told me that he was shocked and disappointed that the final year students in Universities were left out”.

The former Pro-Chancellor, University of Lagos tasked the Federal Government to, as matter of urgency, insulate private universities from the public ones, saying that “the future of this country in terms of functional and quality education lies with private universities.

“Most private universities are reputed for their moral and physical discipline, quality and functional education, hygienic and safe environment, predictable academic calendar, absence of trade unionism, committed teachers, modern teaching equipment and laboratories, and adequate preparation to prevent COVID-19.

“Indeed, no private university teacher would object to resumption of schools. Already, in the private universities of Nigeria, an Ivy League similar to that in America is emerging, to me, the top ranking private universities should be the mirror or the template for resumption of students because of the hygienic, safe environment and the undoubted discipline amongst students and teachers,” he said.

  • Suspension of top officials of NSITF followed due process, Ngige insists

Suspension of top officials of NSITF followed due process, Ngige insists

    Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen Chris Ngige has said the suspension of the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Mr. Adebayo Somefun and ten other officials of the agency followed due process.

Ngige said that Somefun and some members of his executive lavished N3.4 billion on “non existent staff training split into about 196 different consultancy contracts in order to evade the Ministerial Tenders Board and Federal Executive Council (FEC) approvals.”

The minister was responding to a letter written by the Director-General, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, Timothy Olawale, challenging the suspension of the management of NSITF by Ngige, saying that the decision violated the disciplinary procedure approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

But in a statement on Saturday in Abuja by the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Charles Akpan, the minister insisted that the removal of the NSITF management followed due process because it is a parastatal owed by the Federal Government.

According to the statement, the minister acted in line with the Constitution, Public Service Rules and NSITF Act.

On Wednesday last week, Mr. Akpan released a statement saying that President Buhari had suspended Somefun and three directors, including some management staff of the NSITF, sparking a wide range of reactions.

The NECA DG in his letter addressed to the minister on Friday referred to the presidential procedure released by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha put in place to stem the arbitrary removal of Chief Executives of government and to ensure stability in the system.

Olawale had explained that the NSITF Act empowers the minister to recommend fit and proper persons to Mr. President for appointment for the post of chairman, Managing Director and three Executive Directors to manage the day to day affairs of the agency.

READ ALSO: Ajimobi a thoroughbred progressive politician – Ngige

The statement said: “Some of the infractions uncovered include N3.4 billion squandered on non existent staff training split into about 196 different consultancy contracts in order to evade the Ministerial Tenders Board and Federal Executive Council,FEC, approval. Non existent unexecuted N2.3 billion was documented and paid while N1.1 billion is awaiting payment without any job done, all totalling N3.4 billion.

“Same goes for projects of construction of 14 Zonal/ Regional offices in 14 states running into billions of naira- a policy issue being done without Board or Ministerial knowledge not to talk of Approval. This was done in 2019 by the MD and his three-man Executive. Some of the projects are duplications and hence waste of funds, yet you are in the Board supposedly supervising!”

“NECA does not have the full facts nor do they know that the Secretary to Federal Government, SGF, conveyed the Presidential approval to the Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment for full implementation.

“If a Minister observes there are financial breaches earlier reported and gross misconduct he does not need to go back to a Board that has been complaining to the same Minister.

“We hope that NECA does not expect the Minister to fold his hands like his predecessor who watched helplessly when the last Board Chair in cahoot with the two NECA representatives, MD and officials looted N48 billion from the Fund and are being tried as of date by the EFCC

“NECA leadership should have been more restrained and responsive to the mantra of this administration like their NLC counterparts as the NSITF is a Federal Government Parastatal operating within the realm of the Constitution, Public Service rules and the NSITF Act, which empowers the Minister to recommend fit and proper person to Mr President for appointment for the post of Chairman, Managing Director and the three Executive Directors for the day to day Management of the agency.

“Whilst the Ministry does not intend to go into a media altercation with a Social partner, NECA, the DG does well to emulate the NLC who liaised with the Ministry to be adequately briefed and were satisfied after the briefing, more so when they had also received brief from their person on the Board.”
