FG designates seven strategic minerals to unlock the economy

Mr Olamilekan Adegbite, Minister of Mines and Steel Development says the Federal Government has designated seven of the country’s strategic minerals to unlock the enormous potential in the mining sector.

The Minister, who stated this on Thursday in Abuja at a webinar organised by Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), named the minerals to include: coal, iron ore, bitumen, gold, limestone, lead-zinc and barite.

He noted the country was endowed with over 44 different mineral resources occurring in over 500 locations across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Seven of these minerals have been designated strategic to unlock the enormous potential in the sector, they are coal, iron ore, bitumen, gold, limestone, lead-zinc and barite.

“Alongside the seven strategic minerals, the ministry is also looking into key minerals to fuel the future.

“These include metals such as titanium, tungsten, lithium and cobalt, which have various applications in futuristic industries such as aerospace, telecoms and electric vehicle manufacturing,” the minister said.

He commended NESG for the effort it had put in place to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the country’s economy.

He said the webinar which was to discuss the opportunities and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Nigerian mining industry was timely.

He noted that the double-ended shock of the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent sharp decline in oil prices had led to a revenue shortfall for the country.

Adegbite added that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had been making efforts to diversify the economy from oil through the development of the mining and agricultural sectors.

He said these efforts were being fast-tracked, adding that mining offer robust economic potential to diversify the economy, create jobs and increase government revenue.

According to him, the Nigerian Mining Industry Roadmap formulated in 2016, highlights clear policy direction on how to develop the sector which is being improved upon to unlock the potential in the sector.

He added that structural reforms embarked upon in the industry were geared towards supporting the emergence of a vibrant private sector and to stimulate resource-based industrialisation.

“It is predicated on the principle that government serves as a regulator, providing an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

“We are trying to stimulate mineral processing across the country using a cluster or hub approach.

“Each cluster will be provided with road and power infrastructure to encourage investors in processing and refining equipment to support a network of miners and processors.

“In the longer term, the upgrade, completion, and operation of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant operations would enhance jobs and revenue generation.

“The project is based on a bilateral agreement between Nigeria and Russia, with funding from the Afreximbank and the Russian Export Centre,” he said.

He added that other ongoing initiatives to stimulate the growth of the industry include: working with several stakeholders to design mining-specific and credit enhancement instruments among others.

Adegbite expressed confidence that the country’s mining industry was on track to reach its goal of 5 per cent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution in the next five years.

He said this would be made easier with support from the federal government and its ethos on diversification, job creation and sustainable revenue generation.

    Our Reporter

GBfoods, a global leader in culinary product manufacturing, in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kebbi State Government and the Emirate of Yauri recently built a N20 billion Tomato processing factory, in Kebbi State.

The second largest in Nigeria and the only fully backward integrated plant in ECOWAS, the factory has the largest single tomatoes farm in Nigeria. When all phases of the project are finished, the factory will be the largest fresh tomatoes processing factory in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The investment, in the world-class factory and adjoining farm, includes a drip irrigation and fertigation infrastructure, greenhouses, seed planting robots, an incubation chambers and a plethora of agricultural machinery.

The farm will serve a dual purpose, it will produce industrial tomatoes in the dry season and soya beans in the raining season.

JThe tomato factory will convert fresh tomatoes into tomato concentrate used for producing Gino Tomatoes Paste and Gino Tomato Pepper Onion Paste while the soya bean will be used to process soya-bean oil which is a critical ingredient for GBfoods’ Bama and Jago Mayonnaise.

The project created over a 1,000 jobs including: 500 farming jobs, 150 factory jobs and 150 construction jobs. GBfoods also engaged many small holder farmers as out-growers.

Apart from training the out-growers on good agricultural practices, GBfoods provided them with tomatoes seedlings, agrochemicals and various equipment such as water pumps and hose pipes, enabling the farmers access to water in the dry season.

GBfoods also supported the host communities by providing and maintaining 16 boreholes of drinking water, a first for some of the surrounding villages.

The factory is fully backwardly integrated to the company’s farm and dedicated out-growers. In the coming tomato season, the plant will also source most of its raw material from out-growers who will grow the tomatoes on their own farms and from GBfoods’ owned and operated farm.

The factory is engaging over 5,000 small holder farmers as out-growers, in the coming tomatoes season, to grow fresh tomatoes.

The CEO of GBfoods Africa, Mr. Vicenç Bosch, commended the Federal Government for encouraging and supporting GBfoods to engage with CBN, Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure the successful completion of the factory.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investments, Federal Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development, Kebbi State Government and the Ngaski Local Government Authorities for their tremendous support towards the actualization of the project.

Mr. Bosch added our team of extension workers, consultants and agronomists are ensuring that the Nigerian farmers benefit from the technology transfer of our best practices and know-how built through over 40 years of successful tomato operations in Italy and Spain.

Speaking during opening of the factory, Mr Vincent Egbe, the Country Manager, GBfoods Nigeria said, “The opening commissioning of this processing factory is a great milestone for us. It further demonstrates the company’s commitment towards helping Nigeria achieve its food security ambitions, in this case, of self-sufficiency in tomato concentrate production. We will continue to work with the Federal Government towards food security and local production and processing of fresh tomatoes. The company is dedicated to reducing pre and post-harvest losses, and also developing the value chain so as to improve revenue streams for tomato farmers. Over the past three years, in the three states of Kaduna, Katsina and Kebbi, GBfoods has worked with smallholder out-growers to boost their incomes by providing seedlings, fertilizers, training, and irrigation pumps, further to reduce post-harvest losses GBfoods also provided free plastic crates to farmers.”

“GBfoods is working with the Federal Government of Nigeria and the CBN to make Nigeria not only a shining example in food security, but also to become the food basket of Africa.

He especially thanked the Buhari administration, the Kebbi Governor, His Excellency Governor Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele; and the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi for working tirelessly to create an enabling investment environment for GBfoods backwards integration project in tomatoes,” comments Mr Vincent Egbe, the Country Manager, GBfoods Nigeria.

Additional land is expected in September 2020 to be cleared and prepared for the farming season of October 2021. This expansion will be similarly accompanied by an upgrade in the factory’s capacity. With the expansion, new jobs will also be created.

GBfoods has a wide range of quality well-established brands in Nigeria such as Gino, Bama and Jago, under which they manufacture a wide range of quality products that make the daily lives of many African families easier.

Products under their brands include Gino Tomatoes Mix; Gino Pepper Onion, Gino Thyme; Gino Curry; Gino Chicken and Beef Cubes; Bama Mayonnaise as well as Jago Mayonnaise.

GBfoods investments aim to satisfy local culinary habits and preferences whilst offering the healthiest and best ingredients for Nigerian cuisine.

N4m blogging contest to boost teachers’ digital skills

    By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

A blogging contest by Readmanna Empowerment Initiative (REI) has opened for teachers to win prizes totaling about N4 million.

Chief Executive Officer, Readmanna, Mrs Edna Agusto, said in a statement that the top 25 blogs that emerge during the contest would get between N25,000 and N1,000,000 in prize money.

She said teachers have until August 31, 2020 to register their blogs for the contest aimed at improving their use of technology and creativity in teaching and learning.

“The Top 25 blogs will be selected by a panel of Judges and winners will be declared in October 2020. N4million cash will be given to the top 25 blogs.

“Today, computer technology is the primary driver of growth in all spheres of life. COVID-19 has revealed that most teachers in Nigeria have little or no digital skills and cannot deliver online training effectively. In a post COVID-19 era, online training will become a necessity for all, including teachers. The MCE certification empowers teachers to engage students in a digital environment.

“This blogging contest will encourage teachers to create relevant and current educational content required in schools. If truly data is the new currency or oil, Nigeria certainly is sitting on a huge amount of untapped data! Indeed, no country can grow or develop in this modern age without a digitally literate population.

“Teachers are invited to create and register their educational blogs in this contest before 31 August 2020. Religious and political blogs are prohibited. A teacher can only submit one blog,” she said.

While the overall winner gets N1 million, the second and third placed would get N750,000 and N500,000 each.  The fourth and fifth would win N250,000; while the sixth-10th placed winners go home with N100,000 each.

Those that fall within 11th-15th category would be rewarded with N75,000; 16th-20th, N50,000; and 21st-25th, N25,000 each.

To participate, Mrs. Agusto said all teachers must be Microsoft Certified Educators (MCE) – a certification that “validates a teacher’s ability to integrate ICT into teaching and learning”.

She said teachers are required to register with N13,000 entry fee which covers the cost of MCE online training and the certification exam. Already qualified MCE teachers will get Microsoft Office Specialist practice and exam voucher in lieu.

Since 2009, Mrs. Agusto said REI has been promoting digital literacy in schools through various competitions like ReadManna Under 13 Computing Fundamentals National Competition (Ages 8 -13); Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship for Students (Ages 13 – 22); Adobe Certified Associate World Championship for Students (Ages 13 – 22); among others.

  • Coalition seeks help from govt, security agencies to end killings

Coalition seeks help from govt, security agencies to end killings

    By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

Coalition of Northern Organisations (CNO) has called on patriotic Nigerians to rally round government and security agencies, with actionable intelligence, in tackling the killings, kidnapping and armed banditry ravaging parts of the country.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Wednesday, CNO, spokesman, Comrade Adamu Kabir Matazu, said that the rising cases of insecurity across the country calls for the support of every individual, group and community to bring it to an end as government and security agencies cannot do it alone without the support and assistance of the people in the various communities.

Reacting to threats recently issued by Coalition of Northern Groups to shut down government and cause civil unrest if Federal Government failed to arrest insecurity across the country in two weeks, Matazu described CNG as money mongers, who are out to make monetary gains from the security challenges for themselves and their principals.

“We call on all patriots to join us in the crusade of freeing Nigeria from the shackles of armed banditry and terrorism by playing our role as active citizens in different categories of our society whether as students and youth groups, Community Based Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, women groups or traditional rulers. We must consistently provide our security agencies with intelligence to help them neutralize all emerging threats.

“Individuals, groups and communities in different localities must come together to form Community Security Taskforce in collaboration and under the supervision of our security agencies to protect their communities, pass actionable intelligence, defend their communities and resist the activities of armed bandits, terrorists and other militant groups.

“Rather than rising against the government, we must rise in unison against our common enemies.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was ushered in with a plethora of challenges, principal of which was a steep and steady decline into a full blown insecurity. However, it is on record that the government breasted the tape of the challenge and reclaimed the Nigerian territory previously under the full grips of Boko Haram terrorists and ISWAP collaborators in record time.

“This feat was achieved thanks to the enormous sacrifice of our gallant security agencies. There is a salient need to applaud the daily sacrifices of our men and women in uniform who against all odds have continued to decisively deal with issues of insecurity ranging from the remnant of Boko Haram/ ISWAP, armed banditry, rampant kidnapping and other forms of criminal enterprise.

“We must dispassionately make an assessment of how far we have come as a nation with a view to effectively harnessing the gains recorded and channeling same to achieving sustainable peace to guarantee overall national development which will in turn force down the vicious forces of darkness exerting adversely on our dear nation.

“We are not also oblivious of the fact that recently there are setbacks and isolated incident of Boko Haram attacks in Borno state and resurgence of banditry in Sokoto, Katsina and Zamfara states which is being unnecessarily amplified by enemies of this nation with active support of political hawks and crisis merchants.

“Despite acknowledged temporary setbacks which our security forces will soon overcome, we shall never allow the politicization of insecurity by those who profit from an atmosphere of chaos and insecurity. Groups that specialize in advance fee fraud to extort money by appealing to the emotions and insecurity situations.

“The characters involved in such shenanigans are on the payroll of foreign elements with the intention of destabilizing our democratically elected government through illegitimate means and under the smokescreen of insecurity. We make bold to say that this is nothing but an act of sedition that must be resisted by all patriots.

“We warn the organizers of the planned self-serving protest to discard the idea and go back to inform their sponsors that this evil machination has failed because the majority of Nigerians whose mandate the present administration led by Muhammadu Buhari enjoyed has rejected them and those who bankrolled them during the last general election, and will jealously safeguard the mandate they so entrusted.

“They came under different nomenclature such as COALITION OF NORTHERN GROUPS (CNG) which they used to threaten Igbo residence in Northern Nigeria with an ultimatum to go back to the East or risk being killed.

“Same characters launched an illegal security outfits with a day hired branded security vans which they christened SHEGE KA FASA and now COALITION AGAINST KILLINGS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA (CAKIN) using it to issue 2 weeks ultimatum and threatening to shut down government and cause civil unrest to topple democratically elected government. This is a joke taken too far

“The principal actors are people without a known job or business but living a life of luxury from the money they makes from extortions and fear mongering. They are cash and carry activists who run most often than not unregistered organizations with specialization in political extortions. These characters and their willing collaborators are enemies of peace and security and can sell their birthright for porridge.

“Coalition of Northern Organization will henceforth resist and confront where necessary all enemies of peace and security across the entire length and breadth of our country by whatever name they are called or metamorphose into because those who sees insecurity issues as opportunity to blackmail our security agencies and drawback the clock of progress will have us to contend with going forward,” the CNO spokesman said.

‘No problem with National Hospital Board’

     Moses Emorinken, Abuja

The Management of the National Hospital Abuja (NHA), has described an online publication alleging its Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Jaf Momoh, called the bluff of the Board of the hospital and refused to leave office, as distraction and falsehood.

It said its relationship with the Board and the Workers’ union was cordial and respectful.

The Hospital’s Spokesman, Dr. Adetayo Haastrup, said at Abuja that the CMD was appointed by the Presidency on merit.

“The online write up against the hospital, by extension, that the Chief Medical Director is calling the bluff of the Board, is not true. There is no tension in National Hospital. The Union is working amicably with understanding with the Management of the hospital.

“It is unfortunate that some journalists will not investigate properly the source of stories, and without balancing their stories, will start putting up junk journalism.

“Specifically talking about the appointment of the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, there are Supervising Authorities that such issues can be confirmed from. There is the office of the Honourable Minister of Health, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), including the Board of the hospital.

“In those publications, the sources were not stated. There are Authorities that are responsible for the CMD’s appointment but the peddlers of those unfounded stories did not go to them to find out. They are like a faceless group of people trying to cause confusion and sending negative information about the National Hospital.

“Presently, we are focusing on effective service delivery.  National Hospital, apart from giving services to the general public, is also an Isolation Centre and we have discharged more than 50 COVID-19 patients, and more are receiving treatment.

“Their story is just trying to divert our attention which is not necessary. People should really find out the fact of their story before putting it online. We should not allow junk journal journalism in our nation and our Society especially at this time.

“The relationship between the Board of the National Hospital and the Management is very cordial,” he said.

  • Adelami rolls out developmental plans for Ondo state

Adelami rolls out developmental plans for Ondo state

    Our Reporter

A leading governorship aspirant in Ondo State on  the platform of All Progressive Congress, Chief Olayide Owolabi Adelami has unveiled a robust developmental plan for the people of the Sunshine State ahead of the July 2020 governorship primary election of the APC.

The ten points developmental plan of Adelami covers Security, Agriculture, Health, Local Government Autonomy, Education, Youth Development, Industrialization, Knowledge Driven Economy, Social Insurance Scheme and Empowerment of Women. The comprehensively robust plan undoubtedly holds the key to economic prosperity in Ondo State going forward. The agenda succinctly captured the strength as well as the needs of present and future generations in Ondo State.

Alongside the ten points plan of Chief Adelami is also his focus to bring about real development in Ondo State and to also redefine governance in the Sunshine State. He has also made it known that a vote for him represents vote for economic freedom as well as the beginning of a new era in Ondo State.

Number one on the agenda is preventive security. Adelami craves for a less expensive security framework that will not always go after criminals after crimes are already committed. The agenda plans to concentrate on preventive security rather than reactive security. According to Adelami, “Less resources will be spent if security breaches are prevented from happening rather than deploying the DSS, police, Civil defence and the military after a crime had been committed”.

The preventive security agenda plans to increase the crime preventive and intelligence gathering capacity of the security agencies. The agenda also plans to keep youths that are susceptible to crimes engaged in different economic ventures.

Agriculture is the second point on the agenda. Adelami described agriculture as one of the things that actually defined Ondo State in the days of western region because the division was then known for its agrarian capacities.

He described agriculture as a sector with endless employment opportunities for the youths and economic prosperity potentials for the state. He espoused the limitless benefits of mechanized agriculture thus :
“Ondo State used to be the cash cow of the western region because it concentrated on the production of cash crops and it was so rewarding then. Oil is depleting now and we have no other option than to go back to agriculture. But one good thing is that the land will always cooperate with the people.
Nothing could be more rewarding than agriculture because it has a long value chain”.

Adelami is therefore planning to return Ondo State to golden era of agricultural boom.

Third on the list of the economic plan of Adelami is the local government autonomy.

He did highlight this action plan as one that is capable of turning around the economic fortune of Ondo State.

He added that the plan is also capable of hating the issue of capital flight from the Sunshine State.

Adelami has this to say on the topical issue of local government autonomy : “I am one of the strong advocates of local government autonomy because of my background in the National Assembly. I don’t believe that the Local governments have no capacity to manage their funds. I don’t believe this reason is genuine enough. I believe in human capital development. It is my priority to allow the local government to take prominent position”.

Adelami’s plan is to simply issue a policy statement on local government autonomy and thereafter make the state government to assume more of supervisory responsibilities on the issue of local councils.

The agenda also involves ensuring that project pricing is equally well supervised.

Chief Adelami had posited that a lot is bound to happen at the local government areas if they are allowed to spend their monies by themselves. He also assured that the economic tempo at the local government would increase if funds are made to circulate in the state through the 18 local government areas.

He also has this to say on the issue of capital flight in Ondo State, “Issue of capital flights will be addressed because the local governments will use indigenous contractors and money is bound to circulate round the state through the local government areas”.

Health is the fourth on the list of Adelami’s plan for Ondo State. He lamented the present state of the health sector in Ondo State.

He plans to firstly ensure that only competent professionals are brought on board to man the health sector of Ondo State.

The second plan for the health sector is to determine the percentage of the people that actually have access to good heath care in the state.

According to Adelami, “My attention will be on affordable health care. The Mother and Child that was introduced by Governor Mimiko was very quality and free. It is suddenly no more free and the quality has really gone down. We will look into this and consider the possibility of reviving the Mother And Child Hospital”.

The health sector agenda according to Adelami also involves looking into the NHIS law and to get it domesticated.

It also involves ensuring that the informal sectors are captured in the Act.

He plans to create Ondo State Universal Health Agency that will oversee the execution of the health sector programmes.

Also included in the plans of Adelami for Ondo State is the emphasis on knowledge driven economy. He posited that the best economies in the world are driven by knowledge and as such, Adelami desires to replicate same in Ondo State. In his words, “Knowledge driven economy will be instituted in Ondo State even if we can’t achieve it in my four year term. But I will make sure I lay a good foundation for its actualization”.

Another focus of the action plan is on education. Adelami’s plan is to give emphasis to quality education in Ondo State. He also plans to look into the quality and number of teachers since it was learnt that not a single teacher has been employed in Ondo State in the last 11 years.

He described as unacceptable a situation where no teacher has been employed for a period of 11 years; yet teachers have been resigning while some have also been leaving the service by the reasons of death, retirements and one reason or the other.

Adelami said, “We are going to ensure that schools are adequately staffed and prominence will be given to supervision. We are going to revive and revitalize school inspectorate. The nooks and crannies of the state will be visited by the inspectors to make sure that the right thing is being done and the best education is being given”.

The manifesto of Adelami also has a robust plan for youth development. He described the youths as the framework of any development which is inclusive of Ondo State. He said, “Government of Ondo State is doing nothing about the youths even as they rotten away. The focus of this government is tarring of urban roads and not even the rural rural roads that have synergetic impacts on the economy”.

Adelami equally plan to make sure that youth empowerment will be given prominence. He intends to explore the three areas of ICT, Agro business, Skills Acquisition and Commerce to absorb as many of the jobless youths. He assured that almost all the youths would be absorbed except those that would not be interested by the time his policies are rolled out on the three areas.

The mission to industrialize Ondo State is also top on the ten points actions plans of Chief Olayide Owolabi Adelami. He plans to change the narrative of Ondo State being a civil service state to that of industrialized state. He is likewise determined to roll out policies
that will attract local and foreign investors to the Sunshine State.

In his words, “Resources of Ondo State will be brought to the fore while irresistible incentives will be designed to attract investors. Security of lives, funds and properties of investors will also be fully addressed. To further convince the investors, government may have an additional investment aside land, but it will not be more than 15%.

“Once the companies begins to make profit, government equity in the companies will be advertised for sale and preference will be given to Ondo State indigenes to buy out the equity. Ondo State may retain not more than 5% of the equity”.

The plan of Adelami on women empowerment is equally robust. He acknowledged the serious resentment already shown by women in their exclusion from government in Ondo State. According to him, “I am women centric and I have seen that women are very vulnerable when it comes to economic interplay in the society. The most vulnerable amongst the women are the widows. This explains why we have been providing interventions for widows since 2004 till date”.

He nonetheless plans to accommodate a good percentage of women in government and also empower them to the very best of his ability.

Chief Olayide Adelami has the plan to float a Social Insurance Scheme in Ondo State. He plans to make it a Special Purpose Vehicle that will pay stipend for premium health insurance. He intends to make a family of six be able to access health service under the scheme. He further added that what is to be paid as premium will in reality be a stipend when compared to what is spent in beer parlor or in canteen.

“We will need a lot of sensitization so as to capture people in the informal sector of the state. We will create Ondo State Universal Insurance Agency to supervise and monitor the execution of the programme”.

He likewise plans to stimulate economic activities in both the rural and urban areas by deploying the mechanism of local government councils. Adelami plans to ensure that staff of the local government are seriously engaged in construction, rehabilitation and mending works. In the words of Adelami, ” I will ensure that each local government will acquire road construction equipment and borehole drilling machines.

“There will be a lot of direct labor at the local government area in a bid to transform the rural areas. A lot of economic activities will be coming from the rural farmers. It will be a win-win situation for everybody. The farmers will be certain of increased regular income while the people in the towns will also have affordable food items. There is also a ready market in Lagos to sell the produced food items. It will be a win-win situation in the value chain”.

Joshua, Fury pay-per-view record price predicted

Boxing fans were understandably elated when news broke last week claiming a deal had finally been agreed for Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn stated that the two heavyweight champions had agreed on the split two fights in 2021, with Fury later confirming the news on his official social media channels.

It’s without question the biggest fight in British boxing history, one that will no doubt bring the UK – and many other countries across the world – to a standstill.

However, watching the fight isn’t going to come cheap. The pay-per-view price in the UK is all but certainly going to shoot up once again. For a considerable amount of time, the price for pay-per-view fights in England was always set at £19.99 on both Sky Sports and – more recently – BT Sport.

That figure was increased to £24.95 by Sky Sports for Joshua’s much-anticipated rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia back in December. According to World Boxing News, that amount could be doubled for Joshua vs. Fury to £49.95.

Both Sky Sports and BT Sport are currently considering a figure between £29.95 and £49.95. Even if they opt for the lowest figure, it’s going to set a new record.

With reports of Joshua and Fury set to receive close to £70m each for the fight, fans can likely expect the pay-per-view price to be over the £40 mark – at least.

What then could be the problem if I need to put my life on risk of unsafe ingredients in my meal? Man needs to eat to live.

Food fuels a man! Consequently, food should be man’s medicine and not poison. There was a time food manufacturers were using animal fats but realised trans fats lasted longer without going rancid which led to a switch, and today on the average, almost all foods have trans fat.

In 2010, 1300 deaths were recorded in Nigeria as a result of trans fat consumption in food. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said diets high in trans fat increase heart disease risk by 21 per cent and deaths by 28 per cent. It estimates that every year, trans fat intake leads to more than 500,000 deaths of people from cardiovascular disease.

It is pertinent to know that the Word Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 7 in every 10 deaths that occurs annually are often caused by non communicable diseases (NCDs), out of which deaths by cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) from trans fat intake account for 500, 000 deaths, globally. In Nigeria, specifically, a significant number of deaths linked to cardiovascular diseases are as a result of poor dietary choices including the intake of foods containing trans fat in the amount higher than the recommended 2.2 grams per day in a 2, 000 calorie diet.

Trans fat is a type of dietary fat which are formed when liquid oils are turn into solid fats. This is through a process called hydrogenation(addition of hydrogen atom). This process increases the shelf life of the fat and also retain its flavour.

There are two main sources for trans fats: natural sources (in the dairy products and meat of ruminants such as cows and sheep) and industrially produced sources (partially hydrogenated oils. that is, fried and battered meals, shortening and stick margarine, cake mixes, pies, pie crust).

How are trans fats hazardous to your health?

Sometime in 2008, according to the university of Alberta- researchers found that a diet with enriched levels of trans vaccenic acid (VA) — a natural animal fat found in dairy and beef products can reduce risk factors associated with heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

Contrary to this opinion, many scientists and Medical practitioners advice to desist from the intake of Trans fats as our bodies do not need or benefit from trans fats. Eating these fats increase the risk for health problems.

Trans fats raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol. They also lower your HDL (good) cholesterol.
High LDL along with low HDL levels can cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries (blood vessels). This increases your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Weight gain and diabetes risk: Many high-fat foods such as baked goods and fried foods have a lot of trans fat. Eating too much trans fat can cause you to gain weight. It may also increase your risk for type 2 diabetes.

In order to contain the increase in the number of deaths by cardiovascular diseases, the WHO, on the 14 May 2018, released a guide tagged “REPLACE” to help governments achieve the goal of eliminating trans fat globally by the year 2023. REPLACE stands for six steps to the achievement of this goal:

    Review dietary sources of industrially-produced trans fat and the landscape for required policy change;
Promote the replacement of industrially-produced trans fat with healthier fat and oils; Legislate or enact regulatory actions to eliminate industrially-produced trans fat; Assess and monitor trans fat content in the food supply and changes in trans fat consumption in the population; Create awareness of the negative health impact of trans fat among policy makers, producers, suppliers, and the public.; and Enforce compliance of policies and regulations.

The review of the 2005 Fats and Oils Regulation by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is a step by the Nigerian government towards eliminating trans fat in Nigeria. The recently reviewed and published Regulation – the Fats and Oils Regulation, 2019 covers all foods containing fats and oils which are manufactured, exported, imported, advertised, sold, distributed and used in Nigeria. It clearly prohibits anyone from performing these actions where a product or food containing fats and oils is concerned unless such has been duly registered as prescribed in the Regulation.

A major challenge to the elimination of trans fat in Nigeria which ought to be clearly addressed in the Regulation is the sale of unbranded cooking oils. The Regulation lays emphasis on packaged products or food containing fat and oils but it does not clearly address unpackaged/unbranded cooking oils, which is easily accessible to so many Nigerians. Specific provisions addressing this, strict implementation procedure and appropriate penalties for erring vendors must be in place to achieve the goal of eliminating trans fat in Nigeria.

I will like to implore the governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, at all levels, to rather than pay lip service to such issues as life threatening as this, they should own up to their responsibilities of protecting the lives of the citizens; by not only legislating, but also ensure through enforcements that hydrogenated oils that have saturated the Nigerian market in different forms (both packaged and unpackaged) are seized and destroyed, after which proper and wholistic sensitization is carried out, because I do not see them doing anything.
