  • Nigeria’s health sector has massive wealth potential, says Abiru

Nigeria’s health sector has massive wealth potential, says Abiru

Polaris Bank CEO, Mr. Tokunbo Abiru has disclosed that Nigeria’s health sector holds immense potential to create wealth for the country if an enabling environment is put in place for the sector to thrive.

Abiru said this during a webinar hosted by the Bank on: ‘Managing Healthcare Business During & Post-COVID-19’.

While speaking on the gap and opportunities in the health sector, he drew participants’ attention to the current state of medical services globally which according to him, are overstretched.

He noted that Nigeria’s case is however peculiar owing to what he referred to as pandemic preconditions that existed in the nation’s health sector before the outbreak of COVID-19 but further re-enforced by the realities of COVID-19.

“Despite these unfortunate realities, with the right policies and legislation, the health sector has the potential to create wealth for the country. This will include exploring ways to make medical services affordable by providing a well-defined and incentivised insurance framework to cover the formal and informal sectors. He further noted that Nigeria’s large population offers a huge demand potential for turning the health sector into a money-spinner for the country.”

According to him, “If the right legislation is in place, medical tourism can be a thing of the past while providers of capital would have the comfort to bridge funding gap thus getting the sector to work optimally.”

On his part, Dr. Abiodun Oyenuga, the quality assurance adviser of Medical Credit Fund, who spoke on the ‘Overview of the Pandemic and its Impact on Healthcare Business’ noted that: “There is a decrease in the ability to afford healthcare as a result of the business shutdown; loss of income and loss of jobs among several drawbacks. He however advocated for more participation from financial institutions by providing credits and financing; and also a renewed focus of Government in reviving the healthcare industry as these will gravitate towards improving patient satisfaction; as well as an increase in profit.

With respect to expanding coverage, improved and timely access to primary health care services, Mr. Adil Shaikh, Chief Technology Officer of MeCure, explains that Telemedicine provides patients the opportunity to access online consultation, prescription and delivery of prescribed drugs from certified pharmacies across Nigeria. Mr. Shaikh noted however that telemedicine comes with challenges especially for providers of medical services who wish to explore the field; ranging from technology infrastructure, user education & general awareness and connectivity issues on the part of the consumer. He identified three major areas financial institutions could help to bridge the gap including: leveraging reach to generate awareness, innovating on digital payments, and partnerships with health institutions.

Dr. Itunu Akinware, Managing Director Medbury Medical Services, advocated for effective collaborations within the health sector drawing from the saying, “You shouldn’t let a good crisis go to waste,” she emphasized that ‘now that a lot of light has been shone on the health sector and we can see the gaps in infrastructure, processes, and systems, this is the time for all of us to work together and ensure that we can improve healthcare in Nigeria”.

Speaking from the perspective of what her organization is doing differently to stay afloat despite the impact of COVID-19, Dr. Akinware said, “we have developed a three-pronged strategy: to increase or maintain revenue; reduce or re-align cost and manage cash.”

Mr. Omoshola Yusuf, Divisional Head, Medical & Technology, Hygeia HMO who spoke on how the increasing cost of care is being moderated by the HMO scheme encouraged Nigerians, employers of labour, as well as individuals, to embrace the scheme.

Mr. Segun Opeke, Directorate Head, Lagos Business, Polaris Bank spoke on the product offering of the Bank to the health sector which he described as two-pronged: Polaris Healthcare Loan and the CBN 100billion healthcare support fund to cushion the impact of COVID-19 and improve the gaps/deficit in the healthcare business, going forward.

“The Polaris Healthcare Loan has two variants: what can be available as overdraft facility for working capital purposes; purchase of consumables; discounting of invoices, etc. Interest is very competitive while Loan amount is subject to the applicant’s capacity”, Opeke explained.

Continuing, Mr. Opeke noted, “There is also the Term Loans available for renovations, expansion, purchase of equipments for hospitals, vehicles, etc. depending on what the need is. Interest rate is in single-digit”, he added.

Mr. Opeke in response to a question posed by a participant on the role of Polaris Bank in assisting healthcare providers access the CBN intervention fund, said that the NGN100 Billion Credit Support for the Healthcare sector, is to provide credit to indigenous pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare value chain players intending to build or expand capacity. Polaris Bank is at the fore-front and has over the past few months assisted a number of healthcare businesses to access facilities under the Apex Bank intervention Fund.

In his closing remarks, Polaris Bank MD/CEO, Mr. Abiru said, “If there’s any major lesson to take out of this pandemic, it is for us not to lose the opportunity it presents to improve the quality of our health sector and provide a system that is beneficial to all; regardless of social status.”

The webinar attracted thousands of participants from across the world comprising, individuals; business owners; students, lecturers and entrepreneurs across different sectors of the economy but majorly from the healthcare value chain.

Polaris Bank is a future-determining Bank committed to the delivery of industry-defining products, and services, across all the sectors of the Nigerian economy.

    • Magistrate punishes driver for constant disobedience

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ministerial Task-team on the Enforcement of COVID-19 Restrictions has arrested 74 persons travelling through the city to other parts of the country.

While the team impounded three buses, Presiding Magistrate at the Mobile Court in Zuba, Ebiwari Damini who convicted both the drivers and passengers also punished a driver who had been previously convicted for violating the rules.

The Magistrate also ruled that two other buses be impounded in the FCT until the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Chairman of the Taskteam, Ikharo Attah disclosed that his team had earlier arrested the bus driver, James Adegbe while travelling from Kaduna to Kogi state.

“He was arrested, arraigned, fined and returned to Kaduna state. He turned back that same night and still found his way to Kogi state. Today again he was arrested travelling with a bus-load of passengers from Lokoja to Kaduna. The Magistrate fined him N10,000 which is double of his previous fine. He also ruled that his vehicle be impounded at the AEPB Enforcement Head office at Area 3, Garki,” Attah explained.

According to him, those apprehended were travelling in two trucks and 7 seven other buses.

Attah added that: “the FCT Administration, working closely with the security agencies will continue to ensure sustainability of the interstate travel ban as placed by the President and Commander in Chief. We are worried that the number of interstate travellers attempting to enter or pass through the FCT seems to be on the increase daily.”

He therefore called on state governments: “to tighten their own end by ensuring interstate travellers are not allowed to move with ease.

“Sadly, some of those arrested here do not seem to understand why we are arresting them. This, I believe is because they now see it as normal because of where they are coming from. This is a Presidential Order and we must obey it to the letter until the ban is lifted”.

Among those arrested were 17 passengers who were travelling on a Trailer from Warri in Delta state to Zaria in Kaduna state.

Also arrested were nine passengers in a Hyundai Bus going from Gwagwalada to Katsina, and a Trailer going from Aba to Kano state with six passengers.

A Hummer bus with 18 passengers from Warri to Zaria and another Hummer bus with 10 passengers from gwagwalada to Ibadan.

Neimeth’s share price rises by 114.6% in 2 months

By Taofik Salako, Deputy Business Editor

Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc’s share price rose by 9.57 per cent to N1.03 per share on Thursday at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), bringing the total capital gains by the healthcare company to 114.6 per cent in nearly two months.

Neimeth’s share price closed yesterday at 94 kobo per share, representing an increase of 114.6 per cent on market value per share of 48 kobo recorded by the period ended March 31, 2020.

The price appreciation might not be unconnected with strong fundamental performance and increasing prospects of dividend payment in the current business year. Shareholders of the company had at their annual general meeting earlier in March 2020 approved a balance sheet restructuring that would see the write off of accumulated losses and primed the company for dividend payment from net profit.

Interim report and accounts of Neimeth for the six-month period ended March 31, 2020 released at the NSE showed significant growths across key performance indicators with growing sales and operating efficiency driving operating profit by 225.28 per cent.

Total turnover crossed a record N1 billion mark with 19.4 per cent growth to N1.165 billion by March 2020 compared with N975.98 million recorded in comparable period of March 2019. The top-line growth was driven by increased sales in its domestic Nigerian market. The company recorded growths across its two business segments of pharmaceuticals products and animal health products with the animal health products showing strong prospects for the top-line with 897.5 per cent growth during the period.

Gross profit rose by 22.74 per cent from N450.74 million in 2019 to N553.26 million in 2020. While the company’s continued push for the market saw a relatively modest increase in marketing and distribution expenses, administrative expenses dropped by 10.84 per cent to N228.71 million in March 2020 as against N256.52 million recorded in comparable period of 2019. Profit after tax leapt by 938.5 per cent to N56.6 million by March 2020 compared with N5.45 million by March 2019. Earnings per share thus jumped from 0.29 kobo in March 2019 to 2.98 kobo by March 2020.

Managing Director, Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc, Pharm Matthew Azoji, said the half-year results built on steady growths witnessed in recent periods and further demonstrated that Neimeth is firmly on an upward growth trajectory.

He said the results showed early gains of the company’s five-year strategic plan noting that the company would vigorously expand and reposition its businesses to cement its position as a leading player in not only Nigeria’s healthcare industry but also in the wider West African region while simultaneously ensuring good returns on investment to shareholders.

According to him, the strategic direction for 2020-2024 would see the company implementing bold and gradual expansion initiatives including the upgrade of its factory at Oregun, Lagos state; development of new manufacturing facilities and expansion of the company’s marketing drive to Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Azoji, who was named among the top 25 CEOs in Nigeria by BusinessDay Newspaper and also won the sectoral leadership award of PEARL Awards, said the company is increasingly exploring viable options for strategic local and international partnerships to optimise its excess production capacity through contract manufacturing or direct product development.

He reassured that the company remains focused on attaining the good manufacturing practice (GMP) certificate of the World Health Organisation, in line with its current strategic plan to be manufacturing hub for pharmaceuticals and healthcare products in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Our results show that we are on course to achieving our strategic growth objectives. We remain committed to our goal of repositioning the company to play greater roles in the healthcare industry, deliver better returns on investment to shareholders and greater benefits to all other stakeholders,” Azoji said.

He said that the COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of the healthcare industry adding that Neimeth will continue to explore safe ways of safeguarding people’s health through proactive investments in research and product developments.

  • ‘Mental health affects us more than we know’

‘Mental health affects us more than we know’

A Consultant Psychiatrist, Managerial Psychologist, and Medical Director of Tranquil and Quest Behavioral health, Lagos, Dr. Gbonjubola Abiri, reveals why she is commemorating the Mental Health Awareness month with #31for31 Campaign in this interview with Omolara Akintoye

As an expert in the field of mental health, why did you think commemorating the month with your #31for31 will drive home your message?

Over time, mental health has taken a back seat in our conversations. Not much focus and attention has been given to the topic by individuals, the community and even the government. In spite of the poor attention, mental health is a significant part of our lives and is a determinant of the quality of life of individuals.

The WHO estimates that one in four persons at some point in their lives will develop a mental health or neurological disorder. In addition, about 450 million persons worldwide have a mental health disorder, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.

Unfortunately however, 2/3rds of persons with the disorders who need help do not seek it from a professional due to ignorance, stigma, discrimination or lack of access to care.

I decided to commemorate the Mental Health Awareness Month of May with a #31for31 #mentalhealthwithdrgbonjubolaabiri campaign.

The drive featured distinguished individuals, experts and thought leaders who shared their perspectives on mental health.

The goal was simple and that was to ensure that the conversations around mental health are normalized and stigma is reduced to the barest minimum.

Details of our activities for the month featured a curated set of video clips of distinguished individuals speaking about their perspectives on Mental Health issues.

These clips were shared on social media platforms of instagram, Facebook and Twitter with the tag #31for31 #mentalhealthwithdrgbonjubolaabiri campaign.

READ ALSO: Mental health and Covid-19 pandemic

The theme for the month was kindness. Some participants were further asked to share their experiences as to how kindness or the lack of it had impacted on their mental health.

The drive had over 40 distinguished individuals from different walks of life and disciplines speaking about mental health issues either through their personal experiences of loss, forgiveness, depression , stigma, sexual and gender based violence.

Additionally, their disciplines of music, Fashion, Art, Advocacy, money, travel, marriage and others were also explored.

Moving forward, what has been the impact of the drive?

The drive has been well received and commended as laudable.People reached out to me daily excitedly, asking who is coming up next. They want to hear the next topic of discourse and what the next individual wants to say and teach them.

Many others are able to relate to these conversations and are reaching out to talk about their Mental Health.

With the #31for31, I have achieved my goal of getting people talking and increasing the awareness about mental health issues, changing the health seeking behavior as quite a number of people have reached out to me via these means to seek help from professionals.

I have also tackled stigma and discrimination head on as even people with mental illnesses shared their stories in a bid to give courage to others.

It is my hope that as the days go by, we can consolidate on the gains made and that the momentum will be susutained and increased.

Like Glenn Close says, what mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor and more unashamed conversations about persons living with mental health problems and their families’.
